Living Room / Re: Electric shock from USB cable

I've experienced this can't let go and it's scary.  Screw gun on a construction site.  Couldn't let go of the trigger or open my hand.
Had to swing my arm, like throwing a frisbee, to make the tool pull away.  This was back when electric tool housings were metal and heavy.
My arm was still tingling as I stepped out of the puddle.

In retrospect I probably could have just stepped out of the puddle but it didn't occur to me at the time.  Not gonna test it.  Once is too many.
Stupidity of youth. ;D

Use a piece of software called Process Explorer, you can download it for free from the Microsoft website.
This software will show you all that is going on in your computer, making it easy to identify which process(es) claim a lot of CPU. If you don't know the name of the process, research on the net will show you solutions rather easy and quickly.

Thank you Shades.  I think I may have found the cause already.  A stupid IE add-on.  For grabbing videos you can't download using save target as.  A little while ago the CPU was going crazy.  Turning off auto-detect let it go back to idle.  Don't know why I didn't remember this setting sooner.  Off and on use I guess.  I can't seem to part with free stuff... even if I don't use it much.

Guess I have CPU gremlins?

Most days the CPU just idles as I surf.  Others it's going into cardiac arrest.  No gaming or ad-drenched sites.

Maybe it's preprogrammed tasks?  Virus?  Malware?

Full virus scan monthly.  Quick scan weekly.  Spyware, adware, malware daily.

If I haven't used the mouse for a while the pointer will skip across the screen when I move it but nothing really bad happens.

I could make popcorn in the fan air.    :(

Apparently this jerk likes seeing his own crap published.  Sounds familiar... some how.

Nah, don't feel used. *We're* the ones publishing it here!

And the Spider one *is* the viral one. It's this new one that's more rare.

Yes, this is the silly humor thread but, I dislike being duped.

Thanks for bringing me back to the reality of DC.  Where some replies are genuine and others are not.  Readers choice.

With this in mind... how can anyone presume they're getting semi-accurate info about anything ... .

Including any *free software* that's offered.  No wonder it's free... you could end up more screwed than you were before.
But hey... it's free... UAYOR... sucker.

Jokers in this thread are going to be jerkers elsewhere.  Guess there's no such thing as Donation Refunds.   ;D

Well, that's the thing about food (as with many other opinion related stuff)- it's all relative to the eater.  I like sushi, so...
* wraith808 shrugs

You know what opinions are like, Wraith808, no disrespect intended toward you or any other sushi eaters out there.
I've had calamari once or twice but it was steamed.  Not sushi but as close as I have gotten.
The thought of eating raw fish stops me... not what it might taste like.  An acquired taste or thought, I guess, like black coffee or beer.

Back in 2005 I found out how raw potatoes taste.  Long story short:  Wilma  Wait... that's too short.

Hurricane Wilma > 3-week power outage > no canned food for miles around > grocery stores wiped clean or closed > raw potatoes w/ salt  :-\
807
So they cook a potato in a manner that makes it taste like a raw fish...?!

Why didn't they just put raw potato slices in the bag?

<someone tries it> Hay this stuff tastes like shit!
<So does Sushi> Nailed It!

Raw potato slices aren't bad with a little salt or dipped in catsup.

Sushi however... if I wanted to eat raw fish I'd go scrape it off the railing at the pier.

A cross-cultural argument that had me laughing out loud. Lots.

There's something slightly Crocodile Dundee about this guy's argument with his neighbour.

Guess no one noticed Justin Flecker is from Australia (Crocodile Dundee) and David Thorne tells him to f**k off back to Austria (Arnold Schwarzenegger).

True or not... a mirror in Justin's window, carefully aimed at one of David's windows would have fixed the issue.
This also works well for highrises.  Just in case you don't have a sixty-foot ladder or the stones to climb it.

... been there, done that... twice.  Worked both times.     Two different jerks and houses.

FYI if someone uses a mirror for this issue.  Remove the/your window screen and clean the window beforehand.

Living Room / Malware and Spyware. What's the difference?
« Last post by crabby3 on August 23, 2013, 07:33 AM »
A while back I used Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and Chameleon to kill the FBI Scam on my machine.   :-*    However...

I don't understand why neither one will detect Adware/Tracking Cookies.  Aren't these malware as well?

Today, for instance, I opened Windows Mail but couldn't connect.

I closed everything and ran Chameleon.  After the scan for '...known malicious...' (their words) it automatically connects to MBAM Update then runs a quick-scan.

Don't know if Chameleon finds any malware because the DOS black-screen doesn't list anything.  The quick-scan finds zero.

Seconds later I run Super Anti-Spyware.  It finds (13) Adware/Tracking Cookies.  I click Quarantine and close.

Open Windows Mail and instantly connect/receive.

Usually I run SAS before I shut-down everyday... just forgot yesterday.   :-[

I'm still alive!

Had no International access for a week - my Router was hacked and before I realized (was off PC for 2 days - they had used up my monthly quota 5GB and most of my 500mb out of package at 20c per Mb

Then they had the cheek to start using my 10GB of local only free data!

Now have more updated secure Router - more expense R500 -

Only good news is: A friend heard my plight and immediately whipped out R100 - I have good friends bless them. and secondly I can now Access the net from my 2 Tablets without having PC on!

What a week!!!

Bad things happen to good people, CleverCat, but sounds like you're better off now?

Don't understand a lot of what you listed but, I guess, you were wirelessly hacked?   :tellme:

Glad you're still alive.   :)

Not just handcuffs.  Beyond kinky; penis vs toaster ?    IMO even one is too many.  Or is UK toaster different than a US toaster?

Quote:
LONDON (AP) — London firefighters say they have freed hundreds of people with body parts trapped in household objects in the last three years, including 18 children with heads stuck in potties or toilet seats and 79 people trapped in handcuffs.

The London Fire Brigade speculated that the popularity of erotic novel "Fifty Shades of Grey" may account for a rise in handcuffs-related emergencies.

"I don't know whether it's the 'Fifty Shades' effect, but the number of incidents involving items like handcuffs seems to have gone up," said Third Officer Dave Brown.

Since 2010, London firefighters have treated almost 500 people with rings stuck on their fingers, nine with rings stuck on their penises, and one man with his penis stuck in a toaster.

Rescue crews also helped five people with hands stuck in shredders and 17 children with their hands trapped in toys.

The brigade released the list of incidents Monday to encourage people to be more careful. It advised people to exercise common sense — and always to keep the keys nearby when using handcuffs.
End Quote.

After over 3 years of emails and phone calls... the crap has slowed from a deluge to a drizzle.   :(   ...not stopped.

I solved my spam problems with good software that deletes them before I even download them on my pop3 server.  The phone call problem I solved with a call-blocker.  Now if I can only solve the taxes and death.....  :P

After reading your reply, Tinman57, I understand how misleading my reply was.
So please... let me rephrase some things ..

Riddle:  What is really annoying and never stops?  No... not Worlds Deadliest Catch... junk-mail.

After over 3 years of sending emails (31) and making phone calls (17) ...the USPS crap has slowed from a deluge to a drizzle.   :(  ...not stopped.
This ongoing effort included entering my name/address on The National Do Not Mail List and Epsilon Opt-Out.

... death, taxes, Pawn Stars and junk-mail.   ;D

p.s.1  The few bits of spam I was getting were from my ISP, but after threatening to switch ...they abruptly stopped.  ;D
p.s.2  The National Do Not Call Registry ended most of the telemarketing garbage and my answering machine dissuades the rest.

Ah! Yes, a 327 would make much more sense in a Chevy. I was trying to post in a hurry and not thinking.

I think I may have been able to put a larger block, non Chevy, engine in it.  Even back then JCW had all kinds of conversion kits.

But it would have been way easier to stick with the brand.

Back around '72 a friend of mine dropped a Kubota diesel into a '65 Mustang.  When kerosene was dirt cheap.
He gave me a ride and it worked drove fine... just noisy as hell.   ;D

what constitutes a "Proper Start"

In my state it means: NO rubber/NO squeal. 8)

Yeah mine to (Florida - same as crabby), but god...that's just so boring. I like to enjoy driving as an activity.. So any time I can get someone to drop their phone to give me the finger I look at as a win. My antics would not have surprised them had they too been paying attention all along.

@crabby - 360 is a damn fine engine. I've got one in my 02 Dodge Dakota.

In my distant youth I frequently left the cop standing there scratching their head trying to figure out how the hell to describe what I was doing on the ticket. I managed to negotiate that confusion down to careless driving about 35 times.

...But officer how can you say I was doing 95mph on the street...(caught on radar after launching the bike over a set of tracks 6-8 feet in the air)...if I wasn't even touching it??

Actually the 360 was vehicle rotation around in a circle.  The engine was a stock 327.  But the car was cool and fun to drive.

Burgundy with OE side pipes, convertable, chick-magnet.   8)

Kit-Kat commercials on TV.

I don't know why they think the sound of somebody loudly chewing their product makes you want to buy it. Or that biting into a candy bar can induce an orgasm - as the expressions on the ad actor's faces (especially the women's) seem to imply.

Maybe this is conjoined commercials?

Kit-Kat = crunch   York Peppermint Pattie = orgasm

BTW  Fort Lauderdale PD has a ticket called *Improper Start* and they gave me my very own copy a while back.

Having a rather (shall we say) colorful driving history (street racing), I positively must know what constitutes a "Proper Start"? Even now that I'm pushing 50 I seldom get more than half the rated mileage off a set of tires.

I just past *early retirement* age (USA) and a Proper Start is anything except what I did in the early '70's.

It involved a newly earned DL, a small-block '63 Vette, 10" wide rear tires, some rocks in the road under them and a 360.

Cop wasn't impressed... nor my father.   ;D

Traffic lights in the United States.

With all the technology we have, why are these things still being manufactured with such an antiquated electrical design? Most of them can't even automatically reset themselves following a power failure. Talk about a joke. >:(

Update:

In my small portion of the US... we now have LED red and green.  Yellow is still incandescent and not cost-effective to switch.
All are computer controlled as well.  Following a power outage, the yellow or red blink until reset, mostly by computer.
This blinking isn't great and sometimes it goes on for a spell.  But it's way safer than having nothing.
Also... it somewhat keeps the stop or go decision away from the motorists.   :P
And... I'm seeing more and more crosswalk timers.  I think the concept is to let pedestrians know how long they have before being run over.  ;D
These can be seen from your vehicle and it's nice to know when to speed up or slow down.  Saves time or brakes.  IMO great idea.

--------------------

My beef-
Time of day sequencing.
Say you have three traffic lights close enough together to see all 3 any time of day.
At 5:00 a.m. all are green... zoom right through.  :)
At 5:01 a.m. #1 turns red and you stop to let zero (0) traffic go through.  Lights 2 and 3 are still green.  As your #1 light turns green, #2 light turns yellow then red to let more nothing through.  Same with #3.  >:(

Even if these lights were only 200 feet (61 meters) apart and you accelerated like Mario Andretti... you'd still catch one of 'em.

BTW  Fort Lauderdale PD has a ticket called *Improper Start* and they gave me my very own copy a while back.  ;D

Living Room / Re: Cheap LED torches/flashlights - any good?
« Last post by crabby3 on April 06, 2013, 03:11 PM »
A few years ago, I got mildly interested in modern LED torches (flashlights, to those of you west of the Atlantic).  I settled on a Fenix L1D, a model I think they no longer make, and was very impressed with the light output from a small torch with a single high-quality LED and a single AA battery.  Indeed, sometimes it's too bright.

There are still plenty of premium models around from the likes of Fenix themselves, LED Lenser, Maglite, Ansmann and others, but lately I see every outlet rife with dirt-cheap multi-LED torches that may not be of such quality, but still deliver a lot of light at low cost.

If you aren't an emergency services professional, or the like, and just want a torch for around the house and garden, or for carrying in your car, is there really any point now in buying an expensive top-brand model?

FWIW  I have one of these little guys and it's bright enough to see where you are stepping in total darkness.  I like it because it uses only 1 AAA.  You can twist it to keep it on or hold the button on the end.

It has similar looks and feel of a Maglite.  I've dropped it a few times but I haven't run over it with a vehicle.

Mine was a premium (free) but they're only 4 bucks USD + shipping (which may be more than 4 bucks; you know ... across the pond and all).   ;D

« Last post by crabby3 on April 01, 2013, 12:52 PM »
crabby,

I know that but you hadn't mentioned what OS you are running up till now. Actually you haven't really described the problem very well so far. I understand that you say you are not very well-versed technologically, but you need to at least give us the basics that you can. OS and edition (Windows 7, Vista, XP, etc.), Firefox version, what Comcast/Xfinity software have you installed? Or did Comcast install software on your computer when they set up your service? E.g., was the Comcast software that they try to get you to install when starting their service installed by you or a Comcast tech? Is the Comcast/Xfinity "Constant Guard" so-called security software installed by you or Comcast? The Comcast toolbar?

What AntiVirus and/or AntiMalware software is installed? Firewall? If you can try to gather up as much as that information as possible it would help a lot!

Thanks!

Jim

So many questions ... so little time ...  ;D

I guess nobody reads other peoples DC signatures?  Mine has been at the bottom of ALL of my posts ever since DC let me put it there.  You know ... yours is J-Mac in bold blue letters.  Mine is my current OS and browser in tiny little black letters.  If you've chosen to block signatures in your Look and Layout Preferences ... oh well.   :-\

As far as not describing the problem very well?  I did the best I could in the very beginning when I started this New Topic.  Sorry but you'll have to scroll up to the top or down to the bottom to read it.  (Also in Look and Layout.)

This first post also includes what I did, before I came to DC, to look for a possible cause of the problem.  BTW the problem is gone ... in case you didn't know.   8)

The only thing Comcast *did for me* was hook me up outdoors, supply me with 100' of indoor cable w/ F-connectors (ran it myself), phone in my/their modem's MAC Address and assign me a password.

Nobody installed any software, them or me, and I've never had their Constant Guard pos.  I started using Comcast about 6 years ago, before they tacked on Xfinity, and never had this issue until a few days ago.  I didn't include this info the first sentence originally because it didn't seem important.

The only Comcast toolbar I have is the one at the top of Comcast Xfinity's home page.  I didn't physically install a Comcast toolbar.

The AntiVirus and AntiMalware I have is also listed in the first post.  (Sorry ... more scrolling)   ;D

The Firewall is what came with my version of Windows.

Guess that's all of it?

You're welcome!
