General Software Discussion / Re: Acronis Backup
« Last post by cranioscopical on December 26, 2012, 03:00 PM »
I should have mentioned that I use the paid version of Macrium Reflect.
Deals on that seem to crop up a couple of times a year.

FWIW I changed to Macrium Reflect. I know that it works for me — a few times I've found it faster to wipe/restore than sort out time-wasting issues.

Was that the end of the world?
Mayanbe yes and mayanbe no…  ;D

Yep, that was the code I used ... error msg indicated incompatibility 'tween this version and this code
Same here  :(
Finally, something that may not have been my own fault!  ;D

Looks as if you might need to consult ars technica.

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: Extending Files2Folder

There's a nice review here.

Nice one, skwire

The idea of two sites feels a bit clumsy to me.

A fair number of people seem to find their way here by having searched for some other specific thing.
Finding some specific thing on DC isn't always easy.
There has been talk for quite a while about the need to index material more effectively.
I'm not sure that pointing to a different site would be beneficial in such circumstances unless, of course, someone can contrive a Cody shuttle service between destinations.

Living Room / Re: I read an eReader
« Last post by cranioscopical on December 16, 2012, 03:09 PM »
I couldn't see myself using an e-reader — thought I'd miss the whole experience of appreciating paper, fonts, page design etc. That was rubbish. My son-in-law gave me a Kobo which I embraced almost immediately. Some months later I tried Cool Reader on my Android phone (of all things). Now I seldom read from any other medium. I still have some treasured printed books to enjoy but for casual reading it's the phone every time. I'm still slightly astonished by this.

I get the white-screen phenomenon on W7-64. I thought it was just my machine.

For me, the blight seems to occur most often in DOpus when trying to scroll fast through panes of directories. Directory sizes are being calculated on the fly. It's not limited to DOpus and sometimes (but seldom) it clears itself.

@Target anything useful in the logs?

Train it to flap its wings and save on electric. :)
You might get a charge out of that but it's a crow, not a raven lunatic!

"strange Win7 .NET error" which I saw in the past for BBCeditor.

Guess who?  ;)

You're right. Stops, has to be forced to close.

Sorry  :-[

Nicely done. Works a treat here

It's good to see this working in conjunction with FARR, gives it a nice DC feel.

Have you not realized that he's timing that for December 21?

And, for peculiar reasons of my own, I set a system environment variable that points to my favourite command processor. Then I substituted that variable for %ComSpec% in the script. That lets me keep the native processor as default but have CommandLineHere call that which I prefer.

the Logitech Illuminated Keyboard isn't a bad alternative

Thanks for the tip, I'll keep that in mind.
