General Software Discussion / Re: Finally made a descision
« Last post by Veign on September 27, 2006, 10:17 AM »
It is the right direction for me.  I much rather people use the software and support it if they can, rather than have people turned away by a donate / reg process.

General Software Discussion / Finally made a descision
« Last post by Veign on September 27, 2006, 10:04 AM »
I have made a descision to convert all of my software to 100% optional donationware applications.  I tried the donationware / registration process, shareware, freeware and even postcardware and nothing seemed to work that well, with the exception of the freeware applications.  Since the freeware applications do so well with downloads I decided to make all of my applications, in a sense, freeware.  I just released the next version of Cfont Pro which removed the registration process.

All downloads:

Enjoy!

Post New Requests Here / Re: Font Creator
« Last post by Veign on September 08, 2006, 05:13 PM »
There are font creator that start like that but to create a good font you need to far beyond the just drawing of characters.  There is a lot of additional characterisitcs that must be defined for a font to look good when scaled, when certain characters are next to each other, when made bold or italics, and others.

Basically, creating a font is a very complicated, time consuming process.  Of course when I say this I'm talking about creating a professional, flexible font.

I just went through issues with my mouse and followed this Knowledge Base article on totally removing the mouse and starting from scratch.  Worked like a charm and now is all good.

General Software Discussion / Re: good software review site

Maybe that's the one thing that TopTenReviews has in its favor: it's easy on the eyes.

What I like is the ease at which you can take in information from the review.  In todays age people are reading more and more online 'news' sources and have less time to devote to each one.  Therefore, consuming the same amount of information in a shorter period of time is essential.  TopTenReviews provides a very easy to use tabulated review (even if its just comparing check marks) which provides more information at a quick glance than a typicall drawn out review.

A review site that will out perform all others will, IMO, get more into tabulated reviews, charts and graphs, and other visual review elements.  Then let the user drill down to a more detailed free-form review.

Want to make DC review better?  Then provide a review to which a user can consume the information quicker and easier and drill down further if required.  Honestly, the reviews are *great* but too long to read at times.

These are just my opinions so take from them what you want.

But I wonder why they keep different areas as different domain names...

Because Google likes Subdomains.  Subdomains are an easy way to get higher rankings - Just an SEO thing.  I have seen many 'software' sites do this in an attempt to gain higher ratings in Google over the software's homepage which typically would not use a subdomain.  When I see something like this I usually start off very skeptical of the sites purpose...

You can use Javascript (lookup the window.open command) to do it or use a more advanced script like:

Before purchasing any hosting search Web Hosting Talk and see what people are saying.  WHT is the best forum for this type of thing.

Personal experience is to stay far away from any company using Web Hosting Plus and any company they own (like Dr2, Mesopia, NetBunch).  These guys provide some of the worst texh support around).  I will be generating a detailed blog about what they do once I can get all my domains moved.

For Reverse Engineering, nothing beats the Interactive DisAssembler, IDA.

At $439 US (Std Edition) its a bit expensive...

Alot depends on the programming language used.  Some, you will only be able to get back to assembly code while others you can get back the original code.  I know there are decompilers that can work with DotNet code and you can get back to the higher level code.  For Visual Basic (6.0 and other 32bit versions) the best you can get to is a structured assembly code - structured meaning the original methods, classes, and forms can be gotten but the code is assembly.

To identify the programming language of an application you can try Language 2000 - a bit old but still may work for abandoned applications.

To see the guts of an application you can use OllyDbg.  I use this application to poke around and see what's going on inside of an application.

To decompile a DotNet application check out Reflector.  Also, check out some of the other tools this developer offers.

This is something I had a lot of interest in a time back.  I found some very cool applications that I would have loved to continue the development of but I could not get a hold of the original developer.  Some applications really shouldn'y die because the developer stops.

This would be a great idea for a website.  Donate your applications and source code and the site assigns a new developer to take it over.  Provide a review process to make sure the next developer inline can do it and will put it back into the 'safe' when they won;t develop it anymore.  Kinda like open source except its trusted to a single developer.  I know when my time comes I would like to have someone take over and benefit from Veign

Just download Visual Studio Express (free) and then try installing.

Besides a few of the developer type ones mentioned here I probably use Sage the most.  Just very handy for me to follow the RSS feeds from inside of my browser.

I have been following Rocketboom for several months now a her spin on things make it fun to watch.  Its only a short 3min video blog updated each day around 11:00am (EST).

I'm with mouser.  I find at least a couple of very interesting stories each day from Digg.  I just find their comments worthless to read.  A lot of whiney techies who think they know everything.

Another great source for me is PopURls and RocketBoom.  These are two sites that I actually like to go to each day as opposed to reading through my Sage aggregator
