Find And Run Robot / Re: FARR No Longer Activates
« Last post by mouser on April 05, 2014, 05:36 AM »
There is an icon for FARR in the tray, neither right-clicking nor double-clicking it does anything, and there is no sound when interacting with the tray icon or pressing Ctrl-Space.

ok so it sounds like FARR is hung -- that it's not an issue of it not triggering but an issue of it being somehow not working at all.

since it worked previously, it must be that some setting or more likely some file in your launch list is causing this.  i'd love to know what it is.

so here's what to do:

First, before anything else, let's kill the current FARR process and then restart the program, and make sure that doesn't solve it.  so ctrl+alt+delete, locate FindAndRunRobot.ext and terminate it.  When it no longer appears in list, restart FARR.  If FARR still won't respond after that, go to next step below:

Ok so if FARR is hanging every time you run it, lets reset all settings:

1. Find the directory where FARR saves it's settings.  On Win XP this will be in the program files directory where FARR is installed.  On later versions of windows this will be in your MyDocuments\DonationCoder\FindAndRunRobot directory.

2. Backup all those files someplace -- so we can examine them later and in case you have settings you need restored.

3. Then move or delete the .ini files in that directory so they are no longer there.

4. Then restart FARR, see if it still hangs.

5. Now if it still hangs, might it be that you installed a FARR PLUGIN that is causing the hang?  if so, go to the Program Files\FindAndRunRobot\Plugins and delete the plugin you installed.  You can delete all the folders there if you know you installed some plugins but can't remember which and don't need any.

Let us know if this fixes it!

yes, but anand, if your cpu is shutting down due to overheating, i urge you to address that directly -- such behavior means your cpu is in real danger of becoming damaged.

and one of the worst things about a cpu damaged from heat is that it could start misbehaving randomly and creating errors that are very hard to track down!

this is a true story: once i started getting weird errors in the compilation of one of my linux programs using the gcc compiler.  when i looked up the error code online, it said the errors were sometimes known to be caused by cpu hardware malfunctioning.  when i opened up my computer sure enough the cpu fan had broken and was not running!  replaced the cpu and the compiler errors were gone.

the web and the hardware geeks here on the forum will surely have better advice, but here are some quick suggestions:

1. install a program which will monitor your cpu temp and show it in your system tray at all times so that you can keep an eye on it, and they can be set to alert you when it is getting too high.

2. open up your computer and turn it on while it is running -- see if the cpu fan has for some reason stopped running -- this happens!  check the other fans in your computer.

Just FYI for those who have been putting off upgrading to Windows 7, Windows 7 has a good built-in tool for this.

Is there an icon for FARR in the tray?  If you right-click on that, do you get a menu?  If you double click it, does it show on screen then? do you hear the sound FARR makes when it shows it's window?

« Last post by mouser on April 04, 2014, 06:19 AM »
I've just been taking a couple of months to focus on a (questionable) new project of mine called Mewlo, so updates have been slow to non-existent.

But my todo list has been growing and i will soon (in a couple of weeks) focus on updates to my DC software.

So the updates are coming!

well now thats plain weird.
let me ask, does that file actually exist (WFS)?

i wonder if this is one of those cases where windows is doing some trickery with virtual directory shadowing type stuff, pretending the file is one place when it's not..  or if it's some kind of permission system..

Ok i'm going to have to try to reproduce this on a virtual machine.  If anyone else can report their experiences with launching this and other control panel shortcuts let me know.

Hmm that's interesting -- you can overide image sizes and other stuff in the "Node overides" tab of the menu, but you can't override the font size.
Does seem like it might be a nice idea though.. Let me put it on my todo list and see if i can implement it easily.
At the very least it seems like i should be able to provide a way to specify two fonts(+sizes), one for root level of dock bar and one for the submenu items, etc.

Why are cnet and then Softonic hits 1 and 2 on google for e.g. "smart defrag download", and for myriads of similar searches? Why doesn't google relegate such smock sites to page 3? What's the interest of google (or the nsa behind google???) in PUSHING such people?

my assumption is all about money.  that these sites generate tons of revenue for google, by google ads, etc.  It's hard to imagine any innocent explanation.  Google has a deep vested interest (and a profound corrupt conflict of interest) in keeping sites that pay them very high in their rankings.  It seems to me tht google has come up with clever ways to try to obfuscate the ranking algorithms to make this kind of thing harder to prove, but the bottom line is that google is not going to gore their own ox by making changes in ranking that would significantly threaten their income flow.

sure they may make a change here or there that penalizes the worst abusers, and they do have an interest in keeping searchers happy by having good search results, but there is an absolutely fundamental conflict between their business model and what would most benefit their users and they have been pushing that line back in favor of profits for a while.

I went to the search field of food & drink and tried to pull up my clipboard, nothing happened.

So are you saying that the problem is that you can't bring up the CHS window from these applications?
So do we think that the problem is that none of the hotkeys are working at all from within these applications (e.g. you can't bring up the main window with Ctrl+Alt+W, etc.)?

can't really see anything wrong with that.
when you launch that button does anything happen at all?

can anyone else try this?

just for fun, maybe you could try making a copy of the shortcut on your desktop that has no spaces in the filename, and try creating a link to that one from LBC?

my advice (to everyone) would be to not mess with such core functions as the main windows taskbar.  if you are running out of space on screen, buy a new monitor.

I love the acting, directing, dialog, and cinemetography in this movie.  Very underrated imho.

Link to shortcut should always work.. Could you attach a screenshot of the node configured in that way?

That sounds crazy frustrating.

So can you tell me a little bit more about the problem -- does it happen on every program?
Let's narrow it down to try to make it easier to reproduce.

So let's work only with windows Notepad program.

If you go into notepad, with a file open and your cursor in the editable main window, can you bring up the quick-paste popup (default hotkey ctrl+alt+q), and then if you select an item from the CHS quick paste popup menu, what happens next?

Sorry for the delayed reply -- somehow this one got by me.

CHS should work fine on windows 8 -- are you still having the problem or did you figure out what the cause was? Anyone else?

The main job of a task bar is to show entries for running programs -- LBC won't do that.

have you checked out the videos on performing scrolling captures? Sometimes they can help show you the different options for automatically stitching together scrolling window captures:

Unicode support is still on my todo list. I've been busy on another project (Mewlo) lately so I am a bit behind on my updates.

As much as I hate to admit it, I'm afraid unicode support is till a bit of a ways off, and those who really need it might want to think about using a different tool, and I apologize for that.

seems to work here -- can you give me a screenshot of how you have the node set before you click save?

ps.
I acknowledge that the configuration provides no clue how to configure this -- ill try to fix that in next update.
