Living Room / Re: Are your websites secure? The heartbleed bug
« Last post by mouser on April 10, 2014, 05:42 AM »
I'm a bit torn by that techdirt article.

I'm a huge fan of techdirt, but I've also written glowingly of StartCom.

Using StartCom is a decidedly unpleasant experience -- the website is a throwback to the worst days of the web, and the entire process is frustrating and confusing.

Nevertheless, the price and service are remarkable compared to the alternatives I've found.  The ssl certificate industry as a whole feels like it's designed to leach money out of you like a vampire -- and like a club where only the rich can afford to be secure.

StartCom always struck me as a little independent outfit run by one guy who was doing much of it on his own with a small margin.  If so, i think it's unfair to attack them as being corporate bigwigs profiting off the backs of tragedy -- and instead view it as a situation where they may simply not have the profit margin to provide so much help for free.

I really don't see a fundamental problem with charging people a "reasonable" amount to handle certificate revocation.  Just my 2 cents.

When these big giant corporations are ripping people off hand over fist and rolling in money, they can afford to be generous in situations like this and benefit from the public relations coup.  But if you turn to a small independent low-profit-margin ssl certificate service, i think it's unreasonable to expect them to be able to eat such costs.

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: Quick Paste pop-up
« Last post by mouser on April 09, 2014, 07:52 AM »
Welcome, Pete!

Ok so there are two issues -- first, if you want to keep the clips open and paste multiple ones, just use ctrl+alt+W to show the main window and then double click items to send them to the last window.

Second, if you want to paste items and move down the list so that each new paste gets you the next one down, then what you are looking for is the "STACK" feature.  Unfortunately, although I coded it, I do not remember how to use it in the slightest.  Hopefully others can remind us..  :o

The back+forward buttons (which i use a lot) on the new MX are not as convenient as the ones on the revolution, but otherwise it's a very similar experience.

Thanks very much for that test page btw -- I looked for one unsuccessfully.

With any serious infection my advice would be the same:

Backup your important documents, then wipe the system clean and do a fresh install -- or do a full drive image restore to a known good state.
7933
I doubt this is related, but just as a heads up -- I would get system bluescreens when trying to use my external usb cradle with eset security suite.  I just mention this in the off chance (unlikely i'd say) that what's really happening to you is being caused by your antivirus driver or similar security thing getting in the way.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Drag and Drop of folders/icons not working
« Last post by mouser on April 08, 2014, 10:39 AM »
Is it possible to keep the aliases which i've created thus far and re-install it?

Yes, backup your alias files.  Custom aliases should be in:
MyDocuments\DonationCoder\FindAndRunRobot\AliasGroups\MyCustom

But it's hard for me to see how reinstalling will fix the problem -- in fact I can't think of anything that could cause this problem

I imagine there might be a lot of people like me for whom their XP machine is not their primary machine but their netbook or laptop (my main PC is Win7).

very good point -- and those machines are completely fine to leave running win xp, imho.

I think these security fears about windows XP no longer being "supported" are way overblown -- keep your internet *applications* updated and don't be stupid, and I think users of XP are going to be safe indefinitely, with nothing to worry about.

Having said that -- I held out upgrading from windows XP to Windows 7 for quite some time and I can say that minus some minor quibbles, I have been very pleasantly surprised with Windows 7 and would heartily recommend it to everyone.

« Last post by mouser on April 07, 2014, 07:51 PM »
I have a Logitech Revolution MX Mouse that I no longer need.
logitech-mx-revolution2.jpg

The good:
  • This is the most comfortable, best overall mouse I have ever used, with the most ergonomically enjoyable mouse wheel and side buttons.

The bad:
  • It has a rechargeable battery and will hold a charge for a only few days of heavy use before you have to put it back in it's cradle (if you are adventurous you can find instructions on the web for replacing the unusual battery).  This can be a pain as you can't use the mouse while it's charging.
  • I have noticed a rare occasional behavior where dragging an item with a held down mouse button will release the mouse button (from a web search this seems to be a known thing that logitech sometimes mice do?).
  • The model that replaced this model (Performance MX -- see video comparison) looks and feels cheaper but fixes two issue: The battery in the new models are easily replaceable, and charging is done via a cable that lets you keep using the mouse while charging.

Free to first (supporting or donating or longtime or active) dc member that asks for it.  I will pay shipping but you have to be inside the US to make it worth while.

Slashdot reports a study which shows that even elite  musicians can't tell the difference between what-are-believed-to-be legendary hyper-expensive instruments and modern instruments:

http://news.sciencem...olins-modern-fiddles

This study can join the long list of studies showing that wine experts can't tell the difference between a $5,000 bottle of wine and a $5 bottle of wine.

When it comes to appreciating these hyper expensive items -- the perceived quality is all in your head.  If you think you are experiencing something super expensive, you tend to experience it as being significantly better.

Break out of the cycle -- find alternative way to perceive quality other than money!

this would be a very hard thing to make work robustly.. my best advice is to avert your eyes while chrome loads, or get sunglasses :)  or maybe find an alternative browser?  or make a custom version of chrome :)

1. interesting discovery!.. seems like you may have found a small bug with selection region capture where you can't get select the edge pixels of screen in selection mode.. on the other hand when doing selected region capture it is almost never the case that you want those edge pixels..

2. you are very correct, i shall fix.

Find And Run Robot / Re: FARR No Longer Activates
« Last post by mouser on April 05, 2014, 05:36 AM »
There is an icon for FARR in the tray, neither right-clicking nor double-clicking it does anything, and there is no sound when interacting with the tray icon or pressing Ctrl-Space.

ok so it sounds like FARR is hung -- that it's not an issue of it not triggering but an issue of it being somehow not working at all.

since it worked previously, it must be that some setting or more likely some file in your launch list is causing this.  i'd love to know what it is.

so here's what to do:

First, before anything else, let's kill the current FARR process and then restart the program, and make sure that doesn't solve it.  so ctrl+alt+delete, locate FindAndRunRobot.ext and terminate it.  When it no longer appears in list, restart FARR.  If FARR still won't respond after that, go to next step below:

Ok so if FARR is hanging every time you run it, lets reset all settings:

1. Find the directory where FARR saves it's settings.  On Win XP this will be in the program files directory where FARR is installed.  On later versions of windows this will be in your MyDocuments\DonationCoder\FindAndRunRobot directory.

2. Backup all those files someplace -- so we can examine them later and in case you have settings you need restored.

3. Then move or delete the .ini files in that directory so they are no longer there.

4. Then restart FARR, see if it still hangs.

5. Now if it still hangs, might it be that you installed a FARR PLUGIN that is causing the hang?  if so, go to the Program Files\FindAndRunRobot\Plugins and delete the plugin you installed.  You can delete all the folders there if you know you installed some plugins but can't remember which and don't need any.

Let us know if this fixes it!

yes, but anand, if your cpu is shutting down due to overheating, i urge you to address that directly -- such behavior means your cpu is in real danger of becoming damaged.

and one of the worst things about a cpu damaged from heat is that it could start misbehaving randomly and creating errors that are very hard to track down!

this is a true story: once i started getting weird errors in the compilation of one of my linux programs using the gcc compiler.  when i looked up the error code online, it said the errors were sometimes known to be caused by cpu hardware malfunctioning.  when i opened up my computer sure enough the cpu fan had broken and was not running!  replaced the cpu and the compiler errors were gone.

the web and the hardware geeks here on the forum will surely have better advice, but here are some quick suggestions:

1. install a program which will monitor your cpu temp and show it in your system tray at all times so that you can keep an eye on it, and they can be set to alert you when it is getting too high.

2. open up your computer and turn it on while it is running -- see if the cpu fan has for some reason stopped running -- this happens!  check the other fans in your computer.
