Find And Run Robot / Re: FARR not a commonly downloaded program?
« Last post by wraith808 on October 15, 2011, 10:04 PM »
How much is the cert?   Maybe we can hold a special DC fundraiser to cover the cost?

Like $79-$100 a YEAR (approx).. there is no reason for anyone not to have one. And no reason to need a fund raiser to get one since this is only 1/4 of the supposed monthly operational costs of DC. But, whatever works for you guys.

Yes, you could go find more expensive certs to buy, but I already told mouser last month where to buy cheap certs.

It *is* still an expense on something that makes minimal, if any money, so there is a reason for people not to have one IMO.  If people would donate even a bit that might be a valid argument, but with the way the economy is and everyone watching money, to put this kind of burden on people giving away things for free is not just an "oh well, that's the way it has to be."

Some more information:

This is from SmartScreen Filter.  They talk about how to submit a site as safe on that page, but not a download.

For further reference, what follows is my experience downloading FARR.
FARRDownload1.png
The initial download...

FARRDownload2.png
The alarmist warning...

FARRDownload3.png
The dialog if you select other options.  Note that the option to ignore is hidden!

FARRDownload5.png
Finally, the option to ignore...

Oh, and one last point to add insult to injury... the link (at least on my computer) to what is SmartScreen Filter at the bottom of the dialog is broken!

And as an FYI - how to disable this feature.

as then Eclipse was slow and buggy, because of, amongst things, migration to Vista/Win7.
Eh, what? I always had the impression it was slow due to being Java based.

Shhh!  Quit pointing out the elephant in the room!

OK so I am confused what is the difference between background tasking and multitasking? On that basis music playing while you do something else is also a background task.
Music playing *is* a background task. :)  And the iPad can do that (as can the iPhone).  I'm actually blurring the terms intentionally, because they do overlap in terms of operational and functional use.  Multitasking in terms of actual use is the situation that Renegade describes above, where you have applications open in the foreground and interacting with each other, either directly, or through your actions.  There are degrees of this, and that's what fools us in a lot of cases, i.e. you have overlapping windows, and one the window in the back is still running- but I'd still term this a background task for the terms of actual usefulness.  The interface is a bit more useful in terms of being able to move around windows- but that to a large extent falls under the reference category I separated above.

The key iSpeak to me is:

Most applications are not taking up system resources when running in the background and instantly launch when you return to them.

How can a 'multitasking' application use no resources? Ridiculous!

Note the *most*.  Many of Apple's apps can still work while in the background as a background task.  They don't give this ability to other apps intentionally.  Battery life, and applications that don't play well with others are two of the primary reasons.  It really *can* truly multitask on the by and by- if you jailbreak, you set it free to do so.

Example - I get lots of emails so open email app to download latest bunch of crap and then go and do something else while I am waiting - like surf the internet or read a book .....

That's not multi-tasking... that's background tasking, and the iPad will do that.

Yes, Guerrilla and now Armageddon.  I will clarify that I didn't like 1 & 2... just couldn't get into it.

And on another point - yay!  Homefront is the special of the day! Half-price at $14.99.  Low enough for me to buy it...

(UPDATE: Deo beat me to it LOL  THQ is sooo hit or miss; I'm hoping this is a hit...)

But... (you knew that was coming)... If you have say a Word document and a PDF open, and you type in the Word document while reading the PDF, are you "using more than one app at the same time"?

But other than for reference purposes, or sharing information by drag/drop, no one actually works in more than one program at the same time

I think that falls under reference purposes  ;D

I think that at the end of the day, we're mostly just quickly switching between applications and that we're never really using multiple applications, no matter what the interface. (Unless it's cybernetic, but then it's still passive...)

I don't think it's even just computer use.  When people say they're multi-tasking, they're really just spinning up and down (and taking the appropriate hit for spin-up/spin-down time).  Right now, I'm on hold, typing this.  But am I multi-tasking?  No... when someone comes on the line, even though I have a headset, I won't be able to type this message and converse with the person on the phone about something different at the same time.  That's true for most actions, though there are few complementary actions that can be reliably done at the same time.

Arguing against my point (schizophrenic much?), sometimes I'm on nefsis and typing notes at the same time on the same computer.  But I guess that falls into the reference bit- just in a different paradigm.

As opposed to the other thread about a certain Apple executive, I think that Ritchie represents the change that the hipsters strive so hard to re-create.  I'll leave my commentary at that.

Your eyes?  I do extended reading all the time, and it's fine for me...

Commenting on an earlier comment - I don't believe in eReaders of any type - I like proper books.

The only thing I would convert to eReaders for a time limited dsiposable books such as computer manuals etc. Trouble is this is the one area that all eReaders really stink at becaus the books aren't produced electronically to the same standards and a lots of books that come with CD utilities don't have them included in the eBooks - plus they cost as much as (or on occasions even more than) the hardcopy which is far more convenient to read and scribble on!
We'll have to agree to disagree on that one.  Most of the cd content is downloadable now, and I scribble on mine, and find it more convenient to have a stack of books on my ipad than a stack of books on the shelf.  I have some hardcopies, but they are becoming fewer and fewer.  I do wish that more places would sell both for one price, though.

What do you mean by multitask?

Actually doing more than one thing at a time (not just allowing you to swap between tasks but have background tasks dormant).

That's a fallacy.  No one works in more than one app at the same time.  If you'd said background task (i.e. kick something off, and go into another program while that's still processing) I'd agree with you; though some apps can be backgrounded and still work, others can't, and it's something that I do find limiting in some cases.  But other than for reference purposes, or sharing information by drag/drop, no one actually works in more than one program at the same time- the mouse related interface that we have on computers doesn't allow it.  I hope in the future multi-touch does allow this (a la Minority Report), but for now, it's an illusion that's been propagated, and doesn't survive the light of reason.

They are too hard on the eyes for extended reading of eBooks (one of the reasons I have heard people say they buy them).
Your eyes?  I do extended reading all the time, and it's fine for me...

Email attachment handiling is seriously broken
Unless you have a handler installed... wait, that's all devices...

They can't multitask.
What do you mean by multitask?  Look at things side by side?  No... because all apps are maximized.  Keep apps in memory and switch between them?  I do that all the time...

And as I said, I also use it at work (take notes in meetings, use it for an extended monitor/keypad, use join.me and rdp to view remotely) use it for rpgs (mapping, tracking characters, consulting and marking up rulebook pdfs, etc) and writing.

There are downsides and problems to it for sure... but then again, there is with anything else, also.

Carrying and tethering a data-enabled phone to an iPad contradicts the convenience principle and disturbs the peace of mind, especially when you have to remember to worry about the battery status on your phone every once in a while. :)
-lotusrootstarch (October 12, 2011, 10:37 PM)

Not if I only do it rarely.  I use my iPad at home (I have wifi) and work (I have wifi).  The times that I am between the two is rare- too rare to justify another monthly bill and more money for the device.  Others may differ, but it works for my uses.

I still have my phone that I can do all that stuff on too, so it's not like I'm "stranded".

Again, truth.  Especially since I can tether the iPad to my phone.

I have one (and just bought my wife one) and like it.  I use it for my RPGs, for reading, for surfing the net, for e-mail, for work... and it's proven more than capable.  It has its limitations, but what doesn't?  As far as your problem, I don't know; I use Stanza, eReader, and the Nook app, and with Stanza and eReader have opened files to import into them.  I'd say your problem probably has to do with DRM, and the fact that the Kindle app can't sideload content that way (the Nook can't either IIRC).

As far as editing attachments, it depends on the attachment and what apps you have installed.  I open attachments in other apps and edit them (rarely, but still..)  The app I have shows up for me to open the appropriate attachments in.  Then from within that app, I can e-mail it back (or upload it other places).

Living Room / Re: NAS Recommendations?
« Last post by wraith808 on October 11, 2011, 08:25 PM »
Just got the Synology in.  I'm using this drive.  So far, no problems getting set up, and the interface is a breeze.  I'm formatting it as one big volume- I'm not sure if that was the right choice, and am second guessing it, but that's just my use, and no slight on the experience.  I opted for the format to check the disk, so it's taking a while- 4.5% done with 1.82TB after 20+ minutes.  My only departures from the recommended settings were to change the name of the server (it defaults to DiskStation), and to use a static IP (as I've found with my other NAS it helps with mapping not using their software).

The only possible hiccup was the installation of the OS; they didn't explicitly give info on where to find it or what to choose- it just popped up a dialog on my first access.  But one of the reviews I linked to above talked about installing the OS, so it wasn't too hard for me to find- I'm not sure if it would have been so smooth had I not read those reviews.

More as it develops.

a little bird told me that these are the daily deals (in no certain order) though Steam/THQ might throw in a twist. the list looks alright, though that MX vs ATV game might be replaced with CoH

  • Metro 2033 - today
  • Darksiders
  • Homefront
  • MX vs ATV Reflex
  • Red Faction: Guerrilla
  • Red Faction: Armageddon
  • Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II Chaos Rising

Unfortunately, at least one of these is wrong as it's the excellent, but definitely often-discounted Titan Quest that's the game of the day.

Bandwidth might be an issue but shouldn't be exaggerated, even for the case of video transcoding. A fairly large number of people have had 100Mbit connections at home for some time. Very far from all of course. But many enough for this kind of service to take off I'd think.

Doesn't really matter how much bandwidth you have if it's being limited by your ISP, which is a very real situation a lot of people are in.

Developer's Corner / Re: Windows 8 from a Developer's Perspective Post-BUILD

I don't think it's possible (or advisable) to completely divorce any technology - especially computing technology - from the social context it will be working in. I say that because most technologies we're using (or developing for) are not being driven by technical merit or engineering considerations, but rather by politics and legal maneuvering. And this is a harsh reality that won't go away any time soon.

I don't disagree... but there's a thread for that discussion.  ;D

Dunno... Maybe I need to look at it again. It just seems like everything in XAML takes much longer than in WinForms.

I've been forced into the WPF world.  But now I'm not looking back.  XAML does take a while to get your mind around, and it is a different way of looking at things.  And that ramp up time is significant.  But you can do *so* much more *so* easier in XAML.  It's not the silver bullet- I hear people professing that "I don't have any code- it's all XAML!".  But XAML *is* code.  And it is compiled to code.  But the things that you can do with UI in XAML are pretty amazing, especially considering how much work you'd have to do in order to do it otherwise.  And in many cases it can be more efficient also- there was an article on databinding that I read recently- it compared three ways of doing it.  Dependency Objects (XAML-based, though you can do it in code too), INotifyPropertyChanged (code) and Lambdas (code).  It was actually to quantify how much extra time MVVM using Lambda expressions takes to execute, but what also struck me was the difference in INotifyPropertyChanged was from Dependency Objects.

XAML is definitely a great tool that I'm glad to have in my toolset.

As far as the Metro stuff, I think that you hit it on the head, though.  I think how much *we* have to deal with it is going to be based on how much *the consumer* takes to it.  If Windows tablets with Metro take off as much as the iPad and Android tablets have, and if Joe Normal is willing to put up with it, then we'll be saddled with it.  Otherwise, it will go the way of the BOB.

(I did also note that SL in IE is pretty much gone...  glad I didn't get into *that* much.)
