Living Room / A good gift for a 10yr old: Wreck This Journal
« Last post by mouser on April 19, 2014, 09:13 AM »
I recently stumbled across this and bought it for my 10 year old niece, and she is really getting a kick out of it:

"Wreck This Journal" by Keri Smith.

download.jpg

http://www.amazon.co...panded/dp/0399162704

Wreck This Journal, an illustrated book that features a subversive collection of prompts, asking readers to muster up their best mistake and mess-making abilities and to fill the pages of the book (or destroy them). Through a series of creatively and quirkily illustrated prompts, acclaimed artist Keri Smith encourages journalers to engage in "destructive" acts--poking holes through pages, adding photos and defacing them, painting pages with coffee, coloring outside the lines, and more--in order to experience the true creative process. With Smith's unique sensibility, readers are introduced to a new way of art and journal making..

I think she really got a kick out of how subversive the book is, telling you to do all the things to a book that you are never supposed to do (stomp on it, take it into the shower, etc.)

Highly recommended.

Aside from the artifact (looks like part of a text-selection cursor), a careful look will spot the difference in the new bolded text -- but it would be fine for most uses.

There is an artifact above the word "automatically".

Everything Shades says is true.

However, SC *does* have a couple of nice features for quickly hiding information on a screenshot.

For example, you can select the area containing the incorrect text, and use the SpecialFX2 menu item labeled "Patch text/contents of selected region with background" to have SC automatically look at the background color and fill it in.
This feature was designed specifically to help you quickly hide stuff -- and it's a useful tool worth knowing about in SC.

As for adding your own replacement text, you could do it with a text box with transparent background and no border -- but here is where SC will not be able to compete with a real graphics program -- in letting you really tweak the text formatting to match the original.  SC just isn't designed for that level of fine grained text tweaking.

Very concisely explained -- I'm going to see how much of this i can get done this weekend for the next beta release.  Hopefully you can do some testing for me.

General Software Discussion / Re: Skype and Webcam: HD or not?
« Last post by mouser on April 18, 2014, 01:46 PM »
Actually I think brahman's question is more subtle and important to get a real answer for, and that seems to be:

If he gets the HD version of the webcam, will it be trivial to use it as if it were a lower-resolution camera.
That is, will skype be smart enough to lower the resolution to preserve bandwidth or cpu needs (or presumably can he easily set a lower resolution manually).

And the unspoken question/assumption -- will RUNNING the HD camera at a lower resolution eat up less cpu/usb-bandwidth than running the natively low-resolution camera?  I assume that running the hd camera at lower resolution will eat up similar usb bandwidth/cpu as the natively lower resolution camera.

Assuming so, and assuming price is not an object, I do think you'd be better off buying the HD cam, and at the very lease you will be able to set it manually to run at a lower resolution.  Especially if the hd camera has hardware-encoding of video, which can substantially reduce the cpu/usb bandwidth.
(the 720 does NOT appear to have hardware encoding; the 920 does).

I'm capturing a "Windows object"

I think this came up before -- a request to get rid of that special "Ok, you've selected an object.  Now what?" dialog that is shown ONLY after performing an OBJECT capture.

Is that the dialog you are hoping to bypass?  I don't think there is currently a way to do that (the suggestion from tomos is how you would get rid of the other kind of post-capture dialog which may be shown after all captures).

I could add a way to skip that after-object-capture dialog easily enough -- the problem is doing it in a way that would still let people do scrolling object captures, etc.  I could put an object in the RedBox gear icon menu to toggle this.

Screenshot Captor / Re: taking screenshot WITHOUT saving to file
« Last post by mouser on April 18, 2014, 08:16 AM »
An alternative strategy can be used for those who don't want lots of images being stored.

An alternative is to modify your settings so SC always saves the LAST capture, but overwrites previous ones.  That will give you only ever one single screenshot file.

You can do that by going to the File Naming Template options tab, changing the filename to something static, instead of something made with the date.  For example: MyLastScreenshot
And then UNCHECK the box under that that says to Auto Sequence New File Names.

One good reason to remove any drive that is unrelated to the restore is to avoid the horror story you hear too often where people restore to the wrong drive, wiping out there existing data.

Total Recorder says it works on Windows 8.x; why not evaluate it and see if it works for you (there is a trial version).

Total recorder, thanks for the reminder -- that's the well known trusted tool for this kind of thing.
Nice to know it works on Windows 7.

There are programs that do this -- at least there were on windows XP -- windows 7 is a slightly different beast.
I hope someone else with some experience with this will post a better answer, but one thing to check out is that some sound drivers have a special "virtual" recording input that you can choose, which is essentially "record when you hear" -- that is, it is a recording input that records whatever sounds are playing through the speakers.

Go to your recording input sources in your sound control panel and see if you have something like that.  If so, you may have more options.

How strange.. It does sound like something that may clear itself up in a day -- so let us know if it is still happening after a day.
You've already tried doing everything I would advise: Trying in different browsers, restarting, checking from another computer.  And I assume that you've already confirmed you can download other files.

The only thing you might try is downloading other programs from our website.. might I suggest Find and Run Robot :)
And see if it's only Screenshot Captor that won't download for you.

Perhaps the most useful feature in this new version is the maintenance tool to identify items whose files can no longer be found -- and the error you'll see if you try to launch one.

I would just like some more testing, especially from portable users, to make sure there are no false alarms regarding those -- I'm afraid it may falsely complain about local relative files not being found.
