but 1 out of 700 people have the same fingerprint!

maybe dna check on spit or skin would be more reliable

Ah we finally get to Gattaca where only the elite families, like Gore Vidal's, can gas up.  If your blood ain't blue you're walkin;.

Why would petrol companies deny money from people with inferior or not specific dna?

hello!

when will we eventually be able to go to a petrol station, fill our car, and pay automatically, contactless, instantly?

by a system that will recognize our plate and charge our account accordingly?

ok, if you want we can enter our pin to authorise the transaction, but for me personally it isn't necessary

thanks!

Have you heard of this new invention called the wheel?

oh we don't have it here in UK
where are you based? do you have it?

You do realise we have Contactless payment available at Tesco Petrol stations amongst many many others...for the most part, ASDA petrol stations are unmanned and require you to enter your Credit Card before pumping fuel...which...to be honest...if you are refueling...you are going to be standing around anyway, so it's not like you could be doing anything other than standing there...so it doesn't really take extra time

I just used BP and it didn't have any such feature! Do I need a special card to pay contactless?

No devices in or on your car. No scanning your license plate. No key fobs. No QR codes.

Biometrics...your finger is all you need...pay by touch. The same finger can fuel up any car you happen to be driving, even a rental car. And if your car is stolen, they don't get to take your finger with it, usually.

http://usatoday30.us...l-pay-by-touch_n.htm

And if they can move this to the trigger on the nozzle, you wouldn't have to even think about it....except in winter, when you wouldn't be able to get any gas without taking your glove off. Or when driving through NJ or Oregon, where it's illegal to pump your own gas.

MilesAhead what do you say now?  :)

On the gas ID thing it could be WiFi for that matter.  Same with info from the pump as to amount, price, octane rating etc..  The computer in the vehicle could calculate the net octane rating from all the mixes of gas.  Much simpler than actually analyzing it.  Of course things would have to be standardized to avoid being locked in to one gasoline company etc..

On the police cars when they are tuned up they are set to the spec in the book.  What's in the computer is done at the factory.  Most likely some pencil pusher cost accountant comes up with the brilliant idea of buying the cheap gas.  Thus the timing under load is way too advanced.  The guy doing the tune-up can see if the air filter is clogged pretty easily.  Getting gas with the octance available when the car was manufactured is another matter if the cop car has a big V8.

Before electronic ignition and after they started raising the gas prices if I knew the customer was burning regular in a high compression engine I used to performance time it via test drive.  It would at least not react like a bucking bronco.  But it's not worth the effort if you get some dick who wants the settings "by the book" as you can never get  him to admit the gasoline available when he bought the car is not for sale now.  Thus making the initial timing wrong.  Especially if the cheap bastard is buying regular on top of it.  :)

ok ok  ;D

you who moan about driveless technology, you have already used it, if you have flied with an aeroplane
what is the possibility for aeroplane automatic pilot systems to fail?
and how high would be the percentages of aircraft accidents if there weren't automatic pilot systems?

ofcourse not! we are in a technology forum and I can't believe people are so much afraid of technological advancements!

why would you need to have the skill to drive?
I am not opposite to it, but it would be an obsolete skill
and to be honest, driving will be so much automated, that you can learn driving within seconds

Living Room / latex
« Last post by kalos on October 15, 2014, 03:21 PM »
hello!

it seems latex is the preferred system to write technical/math documents

but I find it hard to learn all these commands

the best method to learn them is by using them, but I don't want to check a book all the time to see which command I should use

instead, I would like a GUI (webpage or app) that will have buttons to generate the latex code for me

eg. will have a square root button and by clicking it, it should pop out the latex code

is there anything like this?

thanks!

Google has been testing driverless cars for years. On real streets. In real traffic.  As far as I know, there have been no accidents/collisions.

(Though the law requires a human in the vehicle, behind the wheel in case anything goes wrong.)

http://en.wikipedia....oogle_driverless_car

There have been incidents.  And though they state that they were not the fault of the car.. what else would you expect them to say when there is doubt?

I'm not ready to put my life in their hands.  Either as the passenger, or another driver on the streets.

http://mashable.com/...cars-safer-than-you/

So Google has good reason to be proud; it is bringing us closer to the day when we'll be able to sit back, relax and do the crossword during our commute. But the company also admits it has a long way to go.

"To provide the best experience we can, we’ll need to master snow-covered roadways, interpret temporary construction signals and handle other tricky situations that many drivers encounter," writes Chris Urmson, the driverless car team's Engineering Lead, in a blog post. "For now, our team members will remain in the driver’s seats and will take back control if needed."

So if people are driving in these conditions- and those statistics are in the 'safer than you' calculation... things become a lot less clear.

but you already put your life in the hands of technology (eg, your vehicle's electronics) and other drivers' hands

General Software Discussion / Satnav for android
« Last post by kalos on October 14, 2014, 02:26 PM »
hello!

I am interested in a satnav application for my android mobile

I opted for Google Maps, because it has the excellent feature to search for any type of word and return excellent results (like post codes, points of interest, etc)
for example searching for 'starbucks' returns starbucks stores starting from the closest, not starbucks of other countries like other GPS apps do
it corrects error spellings, it suggests brilliant results as you type, etc

so, is there any other app that uses the same or even better search? I don't want those GPS apps that you have to choose post code, then enter number, etc, I want to submit what I know about the location I want to go (eg, 2 EA4, and to understand and find the correct one, ie that 2 is the street number and EA4 is the first part of the post code, etc)

I would stay with Google Navigation, but unfortunately it speaks very fast and without any gap between words, so it makes it hard to understand

Also, it doesn't mention which side of the road to stay when you approach a division of the road and it doesn't repeat enough times where to turn, before you do the actual turn.

Any hints?

Thanks!

yeah, I know, but I don't see any major steps to move into a world with driveless cars

^ I'd say: the weekly shopping

how much do you spent on weekly shopping? how much food you waste due to buying too much that will eventually expire since not consumed? how many times you wanted something and waited for it to go on weekend to the shop? etc etc etc! numerous inconveniences!

and ofcourse the web of things won't be limited to groceries! the applications are limitless!

Living Room / driveless cars
« Last post by kalos on October 14, 2014, 04:54 AM »
hello!

the technology is here: we have developed driveless cars that you just enter the car, say where you want to go and it goes you there, without you having to do anything at all

but why such a revolutionary technology isn't yet on the streets?

experts say that it's because there is a legal gap about who to blaim when something goes wrong, in an accident for example: blame the user? the manufacturer? what?

well, in my opinion this is non-sense

with driveless technology, imagine how many accidents will be prevented (huge cost impact) and how many lifes will be saved (priceless)! and imagine how much time we will save from our lives! numerous hours of driving, stucking in traffic, etc!

so if driveless technology will give us all these, let's make a global referendum if we want it or not! and then, let the government decide who to blame in case of an accident, it's not big deal if accidents will diminish!

what are your thoughts of these?
imagine you will work on your laptop during your travel from home to work! or you can sleep! and imagine the deaths and injuries that will be prevented!
let go driveless asap!

hello!

we eventually developed technology so that we can transfer data fast and easily.

however, we haven't done anything to transfer things fast and easily.

imagine you are at home and you realized at 1am that your toothpaste finished
then you go to your computer and you order one from the supermarket website and...
in few seconds, a robot picks it up from the central warehouse of your city and places it in a network of tubes, which will eventually end up in your house!

or if you prefer transfer by air, a small unmanned aerial vehicle flies from the warehouse to your home and places the items you ordered in a specialized slot of your house!

how far are we from that?
is there any initiative that works towards that future?
shouldn't World Nations agree to develop that technology asap?
what are your thoughts?

thanks!

erm no, no need for that. There's been a solution for 100s of years, this is definately going too far...

what is the solution?
