N.A.N.Y. 2011 / Re: NANY 2011 Release: Park Cursor Aside
« Last post by anandcoral on January 16, 2011, 10:38 AM »
Hi friends,

Released Version 2.0.1

# New: Park relative to screen or active window. Useful in using with X-mouse behaviour. (requested by yksyks from USA and Mouser from USA)

# New: Park at middle of screen or active window. Useful in big monitor screen with four tiled windows. (requested by Peter Baum from Germany)

# New: Park after 9 keystrokes. Useful in delaying parking for some short text. (requested by Ath from NL)

These are the few which I managed, as of now, from my hectic schedules. Next priority is multi-monitor, which I feel is most important.

It is due to your feedback, I can make such a useful application, so keep sending them. I also added our donationcoder 2011 ribbon and the links of some review websites, in the PCA website.

Regards,

Anand

Thanks Perry. Will make required addition in the website soon.

yksyks, I know PCA do not work with x-mouse option, as the focus gets removed. But am thankful to you and Mouser, for the very good suggestion. Will definitely try to implement the same.

Hope to get some free time this weekend.

Thanks to all, specially Perry and Mouser, for making NANY 2011 such a big success

They are the pillar whose encouragement brings out the best from the developers. I am the one who had doubt in my ability of the application, if they were even worth mentioning here. Now see what I got in return, praise and recognition  :)

Thanks a lot. Hope to do something more in next NANY too

@wraith808, PCA moves the mouse cursor only and does not effect focus. Set "Slide mouse.." to 0 (zero) if it is higher, for quicker parking. Also you may try "Park at..screen edge' different values for different screen position and check. The "Park pixel..inward..", I made to not activate some toolbox which are normally at the screen edge, which get activated if mouse cursor comes near it. Let me know if it helped.

@mouser, to use the Windows option to "Hide pointer while typing", go to "Control Panel \ Printer and other.. \ Mouse \ Pointer option (tab) \ Hide pointer while typing (checkbox)" enable this check box. But this works only in MS Word, Excel etc. properly. Other applications either do not see it or do not use it.

Thanks kyrathaba.

Cyeb, yes, cURL can download partial in various range. Looks like "partial download" was destiny that Google did not show me the page, else I may not have made it.

"partial download" uses different logic so hopefully will work on all type of http connection, old or new, and I will try to add features missing but wanted in it, like Youtube.

No, I did not get offended, but was clarifying that I did not found in my search.

Praise and criticism are like day and night in programming life, and similarly both are needed for a healthy application. I just need to light some candles (add useful features) to reduce the darkness. If we had not critisised Vista, we had not got Win7 so soon. So keep posting the feedback  :)

Thanks mouser for the gHacks link and thank you all for the encouragement. I feel honored.  :)

@Cyeb, yes I have mentioned about wget on the web site, as similar but not with the partial option. I checked the curl web site but it also do not have this intentional partial download option. Please correct me if I am wrong. I did googled before developing "partial download" application, but could not find one.

@Stephen66515 thanks for feedback. I will try to implement youtube option.

I have the gui, download from file (having urls listed on separate lines) etc. option on drawing board, but I want NANY 2011 to complete first.

Thanks Ath for the feedback and suggestion   :).

I will look into them and implement as soon as possible, depending on code constraint if any. Like the dual monitor, I do not have such facility neither any of my colleague, so may have to go by the books and may need someone's help here in testing it.

NANY 2011 Entry Information

Application Name Partial Download
Version 1.0.2
Short Description Downloads first few bytes of a given url.
Supported OSes Windows with Command Prompt support
Web Page https://sites.google...ite/partialdownload/
Download Link Click on "Download" on main web page
System Requirements
  • WinXp or higher with Command Prompt support
Version History
  • 1.0.2, Console mode for background download
Author Anand K Gupta

Description
You see I needed an application to "partial download" a file, specially large movie file, from a given url.

Reason: This is a season of wishing each other and sending some thing to smile big or small. My mail group and individual friends send me sometimes movie file, which contains, say a funny situation of a couple on gift purchase. I do smile after watching it. So far so good. Now the problem is, another of my friend sends me the same movie but in different name and he writes only "Enjoy!". This file happens to be 84MB!! Just imagine my face after downloading on paid connection, I find the same movie, albeit in better and bigger resolution, but same.

So I need to download the first few bytes, say 1MB, of the same and check it in GOM Player. If I have watched it earlier or if it is not of my liking, I will not download it.

I searched and could not find any file down-loader which I can tell to download just 1MB or so of the file. If I cancel a download in middle, the file gets deleted. Forget about using it as background job.

Solution: I made "Partial Download" console application. This is a console application and so requires CMD (Command Prompt) support to run.

Features
Downloads first few bytes of given url. Best for partially downloading a huge movie file and checking it for it worthiness to download full.

Planned Features
Depends on feedback

Usage
Installation
Unzip zip file in a folder of your choice and run the exe in a console window (command prompt).

Using the Application
Syntax:
"partial download" url [bytes_to_download]
where bytes_to_download defaults to 1.5 MB

Example:
"partial download" http://filehost.com/abcd.flv
"partial download" http://filehost.com/abcd.flv 1500000

Uninstallation
Delete the folder you unzipped the exe in.

Known Issues
Do not have any window/GUI interface

Author Anand K Gupta

Description
1. I work mostly in text editor, coding application, and the mouse cursor shows as a bar some where on the codes, which makes it difficult to read the code behind it.
2. When I do searching on the browser, the mouse cursor creates same problem in troubling me reading the text and also some times enabling some mouse over activity on the web site, like auto menu drop down or auto image enlargement.
3. When I fill some text, number etc. in some form in a application or website, the same mouse covers the input field.

In all these above cases my vision to the text on which I am working, is obstructed by the mouse cursor. I have to lift my hand from the keyboard and physically move the mouse each and every time I am working on some text.

Features
Whenever you type on keyboard, the mouse cursor is automatically parked (moved) aside to a defined screen position. This way your view of the input field, document, where you are typing, is not blocked by the mouse cursor.

Planned Features
Depends on feedback

Usage
Installation
Unzip all the files into a folder you want, then launch the exe.

Using the Application
Run it at system start up. Work normally with your mouse and keyboard. When you start heavy use of the keyboard only, that is typing lots of text, you will notice that the mouse arrow cursor is at the edge of the screen, giving you clear view of your document.

Uninstallation
Delete the folder where you unzipped the files.

Known Issues
In some machine, the mouse cursor flickers if "Slide mouse..." is set higher than 4.

« Last post by anandcoral on December 28, 2010, 04:59 AM »
Agreed.

I will request you to use PCA in your day to day activity and see in which application you want the mouse cursor to stay put where it is, while you are typing on the keyboard. Please note that when you use a editor, there are two cursors; one which stays at place of key entering (PCA do not touch it) and another which changes to 'bar' sign or arrow sign, depending on where it is (PCA moves this cursor). I may not have encountered any such application where I will want the 'bar' cursor to stay along with the 'key' cursor, but will like to check and definitely will make option to counter it.

If you use both mouse and keyboard, for say, clicking on object and pressing space to select, then obviously you will not want PCA to move the mouse cursor. Set "Park after <x> keystrokes" to say, 4 and you will notice that the mouse stays where it is required.

Only when you start typing a document, filling a form etc. you will need the mouse cursor to move aside, and PCA will handle it automatically.

Hmm. understood, "Exclude programs" list option is the suggestion.

I will need some time to implement the same, but let me tell you why I made PCA.

In all these above cases the program in use is not important, but my vision to the text on which I am working is important and the mouse cursor is creating hindrance to it. I want the mouse cursor to behave like my slave rather than I have to lift my hand from the keyboard and physically move the mouse each and every time I am working on some text.

So unless and until you face problem with the mouse cursor, PCA is useless. People do face the problem so much that there is a shareware application "Cursor Hider" available for some 20$. PCA was born because I expected this simple feature to be freeware.

Hope I have be able to clarify the purpose of the application.

Thank you all for the feedback.

Thanks for the suggestion, Skwire. We will try to implement the enable/disable option. Yes we are polling the mouse cursor and keyboard but no such visible flicker shows here. Anyway will try to add some delay in polling.

Worstje, before making this application, we tried built in Windows setting, in fact it is enabled still now, but it only work well in MS programs. Other programs like Chrome, auto re-enable the mouse cursor or ignores this setting.

Hope to see more feedback. Thanks again.  :)

Thanks Perry.

Dear All, I have made a web site and uploaded the application for some feedback, if any. The application is more or less complete, but as we all developer know, the software always works correctly on developer's machine. So I request you all to help me on this regard.

I have tried to get idea from many big and small web site and tried to make mine as simple and as complete as possible. May be here too someone will give me some valued advise.

Below are the details of the application. Check the web site for more.

Park Cursor Aside
Version 1.0.6
Dated 20 Dec 2010
Freeware
(c) 2010 Anand K Gupta
Web site: https://sites.google.com/site/parkcursoraside/

Description (of the application) :

Whenever you type on keyboard, the mouse cursor is automatically parked (moved)
aside to a defined screen position. This way your view of the input field is not
blocked by the mouse cursor.

Right click on tray icon and select Settings, to define the parking position and
other values.

Benefits (of using it) :

After you click on a input field and start typing, you will notice that the
mouse cursor is blocking your view to the input field. You have to move the
mouse to see the input field properly. Sometimes this creates irritation.

Further if you are reading a webpage and using up/down keys to scroll the page.
Now if the mouse cursor is somewhere on the middle of the page and a link
happens to come near the it due to up/down movement of the page, some poup may
open due to mouse over javascript, which you did not intended and distract you.
This again forces you to move the mouse cursor aside.

Park Cursor Aside does this all for you automatically.

Installation (on computer) :

Unzip all the files into a directory you want, then launch it.

Hope you will find it useful.

Regards,

Anand

Thanks Mouser for the encouragement  :)

I have nearly complete the application and also made a web site for download and feedback. I am using the application daily to iron out any problems detected.

Now what ? When do I send the link of the website and the details of the application ? Do I have to send it on the night of 31 December 2010 ? Also adding a message in this thread will do or I need to post somewhere else ? Please guide.

TIA
