I really like this guy's videos on how technology works -- he does a good job of explaining interesting issues:

[Technology Connections]

I've been watching quite a few of those videos as well. Interesting stuff.

Kind of similar, I also find the information from the Practical Engineering channel to be very interesting. Here's a sample video of Mechanically Stabilized Earth:

Windows 10 Warning: Users Hit By Serious New Failure
-Arizona Hot (May 09, 2020, 07:14 PM)

What a terrible article. The headline makes it sound like there's a security vulnerability or data is being lost. All the article says is that Game Mode is broken for some GPUs, but it doesn't say how or what the symptoms are.

I found out what happened to my Brave Rewards.

Sometime earlier this year (in January or February), I enabled a Windows 10 feature called Focus Assist. For those not aware, this feature disables any notifications from popping up from any app on your computer (unless you specifically configure that app as high priority). And since Brave Rewards ads show up as notifications, I never saw the notifications.

I had configured Focus Assist to automatically turn on at night and off in the morning so my PC wouldn't unexpectedly make loud noises in the late/early hours. So when I manually enabled Focus Assist I assumed that, like Android's Do Not Disturb feature, it would automatically disable itself at the scheduled time in the morning to deactivate the feature. I was wrong. So I've unwittingly had Focus Assist enabled for most of this year. I noticed it was enabled and manually disabled it a couple weeks ago, hence Brave Rewards starting to work again briefly. But then I re-enabled Focus Assist during Ludum Dare 46 so I wouldn't be disturbed and so my screenlapse wouldn't capture any notifications containing private/personal information.

I've disabled Focus Assist yet again and have already seen 2 Brave Rewards notifications. So all is well on that front.

As for the regular ads all over the place I complained about a week ago, including YouTube, Brave recently had a buggy/bad adblocking filter that got pushed out which caused ads to fail to be blocked for virtually all Brave users. It has since been fixed.

Here's a related bug I spent last night fixing:
https://www.simplema...dex.php?topic=573033

I've been encountering an issue off-and-on over the past few years that seems related.

Sometimes after I make a post, my own post will show up in the Unread Topics thread. Even if I click on it again and refresh the page, it can still take several attempts (or several minutes) before it will finally mark as read. I'm not sure if the number of attempts makes a difference. To me it seems more related to time. That is, if I try to get it to mark as read right away, it can take several attempts before it will finally be marked as read. But if I ignore it and come back to it later when I would normally check for unread posts, it will be marked as read on my first attempt.

I only started having this problem when I started using the HTTPS version of the website. And back when using HTTPS here on the forums was still new and optional, the problem almost always went away when I stopped using HTTPS here on DC.

Here's a thread about it.

So hopefully your fix will fix that issue, too. I'll try to pay attention to whether or not it happens to me again in the near future.

That's stupid. But even so, it sounds like all you needed to do was add " - the author" at the end of that statement so that it was attributed. But it's still stupid.

« Last post by Deozaan on April 28, 2020, 02:20 PM »
I took the easy way out and just ordered a single TRRS (audio/aux) cable. I connected the output of the secondary device to the Line-In port on my PC. Now I can hear both my PC audio and the audio from the secondary device simultaneously through my PC's speakers or headphone port.

But for some reason it took ~3 weeks for the cable to be delivered. Meanwhile, other non-essential items (books, HDMI adapters, etc.) ordered in the interim were shipped and delivered within a few days. :-\

Suddenly tonight I've gotten 3 ads within an hour. So it looks like it's back to normal for me now.

That only lasted a few days. I don't think I've seen any of their Brave Reward ads for the past week. And now I'm seeing a bunch of regular ads all over places I've never seen them before, such as YouTube. (Wow, I never realized how bad things have gotten at YouTube!)

What's going on with Brave lately? :(

I recently played Alien Rescue by Imphenzia.

You play as an EMT who chases after an alien who runs across multiple lanes of traffic (a la Frogger) and has to resuscitate it any time it's struck by a vehicle. The entire experience oozes with personality and charm. I really enjoyed my time with the game.

I think this pitch meeting series is funny in general, but this one specifically makes a little nod to the pandemic which I thought made it a good one to share here.

Spoiler warning for the movie A Quiet Place.

I worked on Defendeer in a team of 3 people. Two of us took regular screenshots and compiled the images into timelapses of our time spent working on the game.

The first one is a timelapse from Roidz. He captured about 18,500 screenshots at 1920x1080 resolution, totaling about 9.8 GB of images. This comes out to about 31 hours of work (including some AFK time) which is condensed into this timelapse lasting just over 5 minutes at 60 FPS.

This second one is a timelapse from me. I captured 23,686 screenshots at 2560x1440 resolution, totaling about 17.8 GB of images. That comes out to about 39.5 hours of work (including some AFK time) which is condensed into this timelapse lasting about 6.5 minutes at 60 FPS.

I hope I got all those calculations correct. :D

Make sure you've got a microphone connected when you use it. It allows you to record some sound effects to use in the game.

PBOL / Re: Weird precision (or lack thereof) in time remaining displayed
« Last post by Deozaan on April 21, 2020, 07:30 PM »
Note that it will still do a non-intuitive switch when you get very near the end and only have a single value showing:

Seems a little weird to me. Personally I think anything over two to possibly as much as three hours (120-180 minutes) is too far into the future to think about in terms of minutes. But I always show at least 2 values in the settings, so I won't be affected by that bit of weirdness. :D

The new version appears to fix the precision issue. Thanks!

While I've got you working on this... how about that third docking option or my alternative "minimal view" suggestion? And it's probably a good idea to update the menu options with the correct links to the homepage and forum section.

PBOL / Re: Weird precision (or lack thereof) in time remaining displayed
« Last post by Deozaan on April 21, 2020, 04:19 PM »
Basically, I think it should never show me the next lower unit of measurement while the larger one is greater than 0. So "24 weeks 3 days" is sufficient precision. Or "2 days 3 hours" But if it's 2 days 0 hours 45 minutes, it should just show 2 days 45 minutes.

I also just noticed it is showing "wks" and "hrs" which is how it's configured to display while docked. But it's currently a floating window, which I have configured to spell out the whole words and not abbreviate them. It makes me wonder which other settings aren't working properly. :-\

If you scroll down to about line 41,764 in the text file, you'll see some of the strange entries.

I just created a timelapse from the screenshots I took and I see PBOL went from 2 days 4 hours remaining to 2 days 239 minutes remaining. Then it went from 2 days 60 minutes remaining to 2 days remaining.
