Notepad++ has some zooming with ctrl+mousewheel - dunno if it's suitable for you. Re-mappable hotkeys as well.

tinjaw found http://dspam.nuclearelephant.com yesterday, which sounds like it might fit my needs - I'll have to read into it some more, and see if it's easy enough to setup with a lot of mucking around.

I'll take a look at antispamsniper for my own use though, since it sounds more like what I need - thanks, Ken :)

OpenOffice is dog slow even though it isn't done in JAVA - it's sorta usable after I got my raptor disk, though. But it still doesn't hold a candle to office2000 in startup speed.

Well, the executable is compressed iirc - that does shrink it down somewhat. But do check out http://www.theprodukkt.com for some info on how they achieve this whole thing.

I couldn't find it either, must be because it's been mentioned at other forums I frequent :)

Yeah, I tried it a couple of times. It's pretty heavy GPU-wise, iirc it wasn't 100% smooth on a radeon9600, a bit better at a GeForce6600, and runs pretty well on my current GF7600GT.

The AI and physics and such is pretty simple, but the procedurally generated textures are very pretty, the shaders (lighting, bumpmapping) make it look even better, and the geometry (probably also procedural :)) looks nice as well.

This approach won't really work for large-scale "real life" games IMHO, but it is pretty nifty nonetheless.

Might be some other application that messes up - what other "always-on" applications/services are you using? Would be especially useful if you can think of one that might be done by a german company :)

I've been using the Bayes IT Filter plugin for The Bat for some months, and after som training it gave pretty nice results. After a windows reinstall, however, it seems to have forgotten all it's training, even though I pointed it at the old database files. It also has a habit of locking up every once in a while, using 100% CPU, and then I have to shut down The Bat.

So, what are the alternatives? I prefer something that plugs in nicely, as I like having the ability to manually classify mails as ham/spam (after all, this did work pretty well for the Bayes filter).

I also need to find a spam solution for my second workplace, where they use Outlook Express on all the boxes (changing email client is an option, but they don't adapt well to software changes, so I'd prefer staying with OE). Again, preferably something that plugs in, I'd hate having to run Yet Another Service (TM).

However, at least for the workplace, some proxy solution could work - I have a linux server there. I'd prefer not having to do per-host configuration, although adding something static to each client (ie, pointing it to the anti-spam proxy) would be okay.

Shamurai suggested on IRC that I should check out http://www.spamato.net/ which does sound nifty, but it's JAVA - and I'd really like to avoid that if possible.

So... what do I do? :)

« Last post by f0dder on January 15, 2007, 09:25 AM »
I don't have that much stuff on my USB flashdrive, as I don't use it as a swiss army knife, but mostly to carry a few pieces of important information around.

notepad++ - because life is too short for editors without features.
fSekrit - passwords, CISCO PIX config (and because security is more important than editing features  8) :D ).

I've also made the flashdrive bootable, this is pretty neat since I don't have a floppy drive in my computer... so a bootable flashdrive enables me to do BIOS flash updates and running those HDD vendor tools (both included on the drive).

Manufacturer tools can be pretty picky about where the drive is connected - being part of a RAID is usually no-go, sometimes those "extra IDE ports" can be problematic, and I dunno even what the siutation is with SATA support >_<

Well, how many codecs you need depend on how queer the videos you want to watch are :). Also, I think that VLC (videolan) has built-in decoding support for a LOT of formats - if not VLC, it was some other player.

When I did video encoding, I used MP3 - iirc with a LAME codec. Sounds weird that people can't play back your audio. Are you doing 16bit 44KHz? That ought to play back even with the default fraunhofer decode-only codecs. AC3 is problematic in that it requires a codec to be installed (although that should be present on any machine that has DVD playback software, I think).

Matroska files come with a .mkv extension, and I've only really seen them used for hosting H.264 content, usually HD rips from digital cable/satellite TV (no, I don't think that's entirely legal). People use Matroska for that, since such rips are huge (either a full single- or dual-layer DVD), and AVI files only go up to ~2gig.

Quicktime Alt works pretty well for me - it's really the apple codecs underneath, just hax0red to remove the player and some other bloat stuff. They do mention there's a few compatibility problems here and there, but that's mostly Microsoft Media Player related, I think. Dunno how picky Adobe's apps are :)

Stay away from codec packs, they're evil, and there's no end to the problems various packs have caused. You can usually get away with xvid and ac3. H.264 movies require a H.264 codec (CoreAVC is the one with the best performance, although I've heard rumors they sacrifice a slight bit of quality), also H.264 content often comes in matroska containers so you might need a splitter for that as well. And if you have old DivX movies, you might need their codec as well.

But this little extra bit of manual work usually means everything works a lot smoother :)

Hm, I'm pretty sure this has been mentioned before? Weird if it hasn't, anyway :)

I remember seeing farbrausch's fr-08 live on a big-screen at The Party, 2000. That was pretty cool :)

Too bad The Party went bust... got infected by gamer-lamers anyway, and turned from a demoparty to a lame CS kiddie shoot-out.

I haven't checked it out, but my experience with java apps is that they're generally pretty much on the heavy side, and the GUIs are laggy and klumzy. I suppose for a backup tool, though, the running speed shouldn't be too bad, since you're going to be file I/O bound. Guess it's worth giving it a shot.

PS: yes, I'm biased - I dislike java programs even more than I dislike dotNET programs. Probably wouldn't be so bad if the ms<>sun case hadn't happened, and we still had the faster&lighter MS JVM.

Give it a thorough test with the drive-manufacturer's management tool and see what comes up - and watch the S.M.A.R.T data before and afterwards.

The "verifying file data" means going through each sector of the drive, afaik trying to read from it. If you format the drive, be sure to do a "full format" - see if it locks up during that, too.

I don't install custom drivers either, thankfully with USB devices and XP I don't really need it (but then I don't have a zillion buttons on my mouse that I need to program, and my keyboard is a standard Dell one I got from whereever :) ).

Doh, didn't see that - was put off by the images and didn't look properly at the site. .mov format, bleh. Now where did I put that "quicktime alternate"?

EDIT: okay, that thing looks funky. But it doesn't look like it's going to be very comfortable to use :-s

this is probably above what I intended this to be used for, I was after a simple way to monitor around 4-5 files i was working on.  I am not sure how live monitoring of 100+ files would impact on CPU usage etc.
It seems like you continually poll files for their last-modify timestamp?

I don't know how easy this is to use from AHK, but windows supports "file change notifications", so you don't have to continually poll. Iirc it's slightly clunky to work with, but it might be worth looking into.
