Super-sized Newsletter for May 20, 2014
"Codename: Slow and Steady"

1. Newsletter Editorial

Greetings!

It's been 125 days since the last newsletter.  In that time, approximately 837 new threads were started on the forum, and 8500 new posts were made (133 of those have been selected for inclusion in this newsletter); 300 spammers were banned by our moderators, 3187 new members joined the forum, and 600 new people donated to the site (thank you!).

In those 125 days, the site has registered over 20 million pageviews and served over 4 terabytes of data (most of that coming from our free software downloads).

I highlight those stats because freeware has been getting a bad name lately, with adware, junkware, and toolbars being bundled into downloads by more and more formerly-respected software hosting sites (sometimes even against the will of the original coders) -- and our site has remained free of such things since we started 9 years ago.

That's been possible only because of the support of normal everyday folks who have donated to the site.  Your donations have meant that we have been able to pay for a fast dedicated server and have never had to depend on software hosting sites or the whims of advertisers.  And that's made all the difference.

Thank you for supporting our site and making it possible for us to keep doing things our way, as a small independent site.

And now on to the newsletter -- a collection of some of the best posts on our forum in the last few months, and a summary of recent updates to our software.

Hopefully you'll find something worth your time.
-jesse (mouser)

2. User-to-User: Your Input Requested

We love nothing more than having interesting discussions on our forum -- and we love when new people participate in the discussions.  In each newsletter we try to highlight a few topics that we think might interest casual readers and that are good candidates for making your first post.

3. Mouser's Software Updates

I've uploaded some updates to many of my large applications since the last newsletter.  As always, you can find the list of what's new both in the online help pages (linked from each program homepage) or in the forum thread about the application (also linked from each program homepage).

4. Skwire Empire Software Updates

DC member skwire is one of the more prolific coders of utilities on our site -- he roams the coding snack request section and pounces like a jaguar when he finds something that catches his eye.  He's released a ton of updates to his software since the last newsletter, including some updates to his most popular tools:

5. Coding Snacks, and other Member Projects

We love to keep up with projects that our members are working on, and hearing what our forum members think of software they use.  If you're working on something interesting -- let us know!

6. Mini-reviews and requests

Members share their reviews of software with one another on the forum.

7. Website Discoveries, Debates, Essays, Discussions

What's new in cyberspace? What exciting new sites have been discovered by forum members?  What's the current hot topic and debate? Read on to find out...  And be sure to check out our new list of our "Favorite" websites.

8. Software Discussions

Some noteworthy software discussion on the forum since the last newsletter.

9. Entertainment, Games, and Humour

Here's a collection of some diversionary web browsing links posted on the forum recently.

10. Developer's Corner

This section highlights some discussions that might be relevant for not just coders and developers, but also people interested in entrepreneurial issues.

11. Security News

There were so many security-related posts on the forum in the last month that we have a section of the newsletter devoted to the issue.

12. Hardware Hangout

We've started to see more hardware discussions on the forum in the last year or two.  Hopefully the trend will continue -- we'd love to hear about more DIY projects from readers.

13. Linux and Non-Windows Stuff

A relatively new section in this newsletter devoted to linux and other non-windows platforms.

what ideally would you like Process Piglet to do about it?  you can exclude it from monitoring -- but short of that what would you want it to do?

I wouldn't mind knowing about such a tool as well -- especially if it was smart enough to check a range of dates..

Webcam Video Diary / Re: This would be great if compression worked
« Last post by mouser on May 19, 2014, 02:44 PM »
Sorry for the delay in replying! Especially to a star trek related post!

I have a couple of video recording applications, and I have to admit I still am perplexed and confused and frustrated by the various interactions between compression options and video and audio codecs.

It's not the Webcam Video Diary doesn't support compression -- it's that you have to experiment and find a good set of options and codec choices that work well together and give good compression.

What we really need is for someone who is good at such things to help us understand a good set of configuration options we should all use to get good results with reasonable file sizes.

oh lord, these antivirus companies and their stupidity sometimes..
there is nothing malicious in url snooper -- not even any adware, bundled toolbars, or ANYTHING questionable.

so it sounds like Panda is being ridiculous.

does it give you any indication of why it did it -- what it *thinks* is wrong?

usually these stupid antivirus programs at least make some claim that they found some "generic unknown" thing that they don't understand so they are flagging it as questionable.
it takes an unusually terrible antivirus product to just outright delete things without asking the user's permission.

N.A.N.Y. 2014 / Re: NANY 2014 Release: Process Piglet
« Last post by mouser on May 18, 2014, 11:39 AM »
Just a quick check -- it looks like my code gives processes a very generous 30 seconds to establish a baseline memory use.. That should be enough to prevent "As soon as I open Firefox Piglet starts squawking".

So there should be no alerts for any process until its been running for at least 30 seconds.  If we find that isn't true then it's a bug.  Any insight into whether your alerts were coming before firefox was running for at least 30 seconds?

Ok that's helpful.

From the description i can't quite tell if the new method will be better for you, but it's now an option, so it's safe for you to upgrade (the option is for each item, where you set the start+end dates).

Let me know.

Can you help me understand why you would want it to behave the original way?

Well this is very confusing.. I was sure the problem had to do with locale settings (different ways dates and times are represented).
But trying this on a virtual machine with your date and time locale settings, i cannot reproduce this problem.
I'm sure it's happening because several of you are experiencing the problem -- so i don't know whats happening.

Perhaps I am not reproducing the steps well enough.

AbuFi seemed to give me very clear steps to reproduce, but maybe i'm missing something.  Can you guys try to give me an exact set of steps to perform to try to recreate this problem where the time is resetting to 00:00:00?

Also, can you tell me your country setting in windows so i can make sure i get that exactly right?

OOPS never mind i set it to french locale and i got the 00s!  Stay tuned i'm on it!

There are a few people on youtube doing really good in-depth reviews and comparisons of LED bulbs -- you'll find some reviews of those flat types.

Observations and Recommendations:

I did find one very expensive brand of LED bulb that is: 100W bright, suitable for installation in an enclosed fixture, and standard A19 size.
That's a very tricky combination, and you pay for it -- but i do have one kitchen fixture where those features are important.

[though for that price, perhaps the smarter thing to do is replace the light fixture]

Living Room / Re: Our experiences with LED light bulb replacements
« Last post by mouser on May 16, 2014, 01:34 PM »
Observations and Recommendations:

I installed some CREE 100w LED bulbs (A21 size, somewhat bigger than normal) in two ceiling fan lights (4 bulbs each).
I tried soft white (2700k) and bright white (5000k); the bright white was much too blue.
The soft white was an excellent replacement for incandescents -- very bright, look just like incandescents.

Size was not a problem with one set of my ceiling fan light shades but another set is too narrow and the bulbs don't fit.  Phillips makes a more tubular 100W LED that might.

Dimming was ok but cannot dim to very low light.  Shouldn't be a problem in most cases but if you like to be coy in the bedroom it could be an issue.

Living Room / Our experiences with LED light bulb replacements
« Last post by mouser on May 16, 2014, 01:30 PM »
So I have begun experimenting with LED light bulbs to replace my incandescents, and I thought we could use a thread to share thoughts.

Motivations:

First, let me say something about my motivations.  A big appeal of LED light bulbs is their lifespan and low cost of usage.  Those are not primary motivations for me -- mostly because I think with technology changing, a 20+ lifespan in theory is unlikely to be a reality -- new models will be out in 5 years that will demand upgrading.

However, I am motivated by the decrease in heat output -- in the summer my incandescents can generate a large amount of heat and i'm very keen to reduce that.
Additionally, i would like the ability to run brighter bulbs in my existing light fixtures that are currently limited to 60w.

Concerns and Issues:

There are several concerns and issues with using LED bulbs in some light fixtures:

1. Large size of bulbs.  You can get common LED bulbs equivelent to 75w in standard A19 size; brighter than that they get bigger (A21) and may not fit in fixtures.
2. Weight of bulbs.  These LED bulbs can get heavy -- I have one light fixture where I will have to jerry rig some supports for it.
3. Spotlight effect.  The LED bulbs are more directional -- which can be especially troublesome for fixtures where the bulb is pointing up.
4. Color temperature.  There are two main temperatures you see (2700k soft yellow, 5000k daylight blue); The blue LEDS seem like they are closer to flourescent than any incandescent.
5. Candelabra sizes.  I have a couple of chandelier type light fixtures that use candelabra bulbs; there are some candelabra LEDS but it's unclear if they are bright enough.
6. Dimming ability, noise, flickering -- all have been mentioned in various places as potential problem areas for LEDs.

Observations and Recommendations:

I will be posting some initial observations soon -- I hope some of you other early adopters will too -- what have your experiences with LED bulbs been?
