Developer's Corner / Re: Free icons for developers
« Last post by tomos on July 15, 2010, 06:18 AM »
Today we are glad to release gCons, a set of free all-purpose 32×32px icons for designers and web developers (100 icons). The icons come in 12 different colors and are available in PSD, PNG, JPG and GIF formats. This set was designed by Sarfraz Shoukat  especially for Smashing Magazine and its readers.

Anyway, here's a rather critical follow-up; Chickens, eggs, this is no way to report on science.

the comments are worth a read as well (serious and...
...entertaining)

Living Room / Re: How to send fax through high-speed internet connection?
« Last post by tomos on July 15, 2010, 04:27 AM »
They also offer a tool for download, that enables the box to send and receive fax.

thanks for that tip Thomas

here's the download page - BUT I just tried to install and it wont install...
---------------------------
FRITZ!fax für FRITZ!Box
---------------------------
Es wurde weder eine FRITZ!Box Fon noch ein AVM ISDN-Controller gefunden!
Die Installation wird abgebrochen.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------
= cant find FRITZ!Box or AVM ISDN-Controller.
So I guess you need the FritzBox router

General Software Discussion / Re: PC Monitoring - Need Help
« Last post by tomos on July 14, 2010, 08:00 AM »
I have a tendency to see both sides of a coin (can be a PIA at times and of course the ability deserts me when I'm personally involved)

I actually thought both posts were fair enough -
~ OP
~ 40hz gives his opinion, and warns in the note at the end against something the first poster might not have considered
~ arshadbh says no thanks to the opinion, and requests - a bit loudly - only help with the software (& either misses or ignores 40hz's note)

I do have an opinion as well btw but I think now is not the time or the place...

Oh, I didn't think of this earlier, Google Reader has a fairly new feature that autogenerates RSS feeds for sites that don't have them. Try just putting in the URL for the web site where it is expecting an RSS URL if you use Google Reader. It works pretty well in my experience (hn.com for example). It also helps if there is a mobile version of the site to point it to.

thanks for that tip

I really enjoy seeing members of DC benefit from each other like this.

Thanks Veign, and a really big super duper thanks to mouser for creating DC in the first place!

+1 to all :)

again from Smaching Magazine:
Showcase of Beautiful Photography

I'm not even sure why I'm posting this - it's different from the last selection (edit: maybe I'm in the wrong thread - this link being photos as opposed to websites...), but a very 'graphicky' bunch of images, not so much to my taste but ymmv
I liked this one -

wanted to post the source of that image but this was as near as I could find - http://fc01.devianta...tuer_by_5letters.jpg

After such a hard winter I appreciated the spring even more than usual this year.
There was a good bit of rain and everything was nice & green (for a while - 35° most days now so everything is drying up)

from June the 22nd. It's almost the same view as the first pic in this older post FWIW

EA's own simulation agrees with your initial findings, mouser. My rarely used national pride is betting hard on that outcome as well ;D

well, congrats Lashiec

Five minutes to kick-off!

There's been a World Cup predicter here in germany of late:
Paul the octopus, "the Oracle of Oberhausen," has successfully predicted all six of Germany's World Cup matches so far -- after going four for five in the European Championships two years ago. No one knows how he does it, but for a while it made him the most popular invertebrate in Germany, stealing headlines even from the coalition government.

He "predicts" by choosing a mussel from one of two possible containers, both marked with national flags. On Tuesday he startled Germans by calling a Spanish upset. Most fans weren't terribly worried. Yes, the striker Thomas Müller was out on penalties; and sure, Spain had been strong. But ever since Brazil dropped out of contention the young German team looked swift and precise enough to clear a path to the championship.

The big question really is how all sides can come to accept each other's terms.

No Paul,
I dont have to accept anyone's 'terms' here. I simply say this stuff [rape game] is unacceptable.

"/" is on the bottom left corner in the standardized layout, and I thought it was easy to press. I'll make this key configurable in future versions. (see attachment in previous post)
You can use hot keys to run commands as shown in the video if you really hate "Shift" 8). Everything mentioned in the video and the post is available in the freeware version of Listary, and you don't need to purchase the pro version if you use Listary only at home (not in your office).

"/" is above 7 on the german language keyboard as well...

You dont have any trial, do you ?
Could someone install the free version on a work machine to test it for a limited time (e.g. in my case I have two pc's, both are shared between work & personal stuff - I'm self-employed & work from home.)

« Last post by tomos on July 09, 2010, 09:39 AM »
I think sans serif too (not recommending Arial in particular)

Screenshot 014.png

looking at that, you could probably even go a point size bigger with the Arial and fit the same amount of text

« Last post by tomos on July 09, 2010, 06:36 AM »
First: apologies, I havent read the thread fully :-[ but being a brazen git I'll post anyways :)

Help:
one challenge is clearly combining (or separating) [1] info about the preferences/options, also possibly the interface/menus etc. and [2] showing people how to actually use the programme.

Interface:
generally intuitive is better - but if you can do something much quicker, in a way that is initially more difficult to learn - I would always opt for the latter.

Screencasts:
I personally think they can only supplement other info (I've seen one major software site where I couldnt see a comprehensive list of features but was allowed to look at very slow moving videos - I gave up)

Living Room / Re: App Culture vs. Free Culture
« Last post by tomos on July 09, 2010, 06:28 AM »
Once an app store has you locked in to its "buy-here-or-get-out" structure, what's to keep the owner, e.g., Apple, from taking 35, 40, and eventually 50% of your 99 cents? If you protest, what are you going to do -- shut up, take less, and be happy for the privilege of being ripped off.
true,
that's could be the biggest problem for the developers, and possibly for the users in the end

If you know of an example where a "payments technology company" such as Visa or PayPal ever take less and reduce fees, I'd love to hear it.
when they are in direct competition with other like companies.
Apple is in competition with others but once they get people to buy into the hardware it's back to your first point ;)

Is 30% that bad when you consider it means you don't have to set up a store, actually handle credit card fees, or pay for the bandwidth? I'm seriously asking as it doesn't seem that bad to me. I dislike Apple's policies and the corporate attitude they project, but I'm not sure I see this 70-30 split being so outrageous.

It's outrageously high, I think. You do 100% of the work and they take 30%! Why not 5%?

if you sell a product directly to a [real] shop, in my experience they usually put minimum 100% on top of your price i.e. a 50-50 split of the retail price.
70-30 is actually 42% on top of your selling price FWIW   [edit] I've no idea how this would normally work with online retailers [/edit]

I'm not trying to defend the system (or Apple :p) just throwing it out there.
Also, of course, what's quoted in the last two posts...

totally off-topic:

interesting to learn about Taglish at that link:
