Find And Run Robot / Re: F&R fans get an update
« Last post by Carol Haynes on August 29, 2005, 08:41 AM »
This version seems to work well for me.

Note I had no probs using the Help button ???

Couple of suggestions (speedwise). I like to search Program files too but I have such a lot of stuff it is really slow.

(1) How about in the next version allowing F&R to take a snapshot of all pattern-matching searched for in Program files and Windows folders and use that snapshot for speed. An update button could be included to regenerate the snapshots whenever you want (including if pattern-matching is altered).

(2) How about allowing the launch list items to be edited? That way for example an EXE file name could be replaced by something more meaningful.

(3) How about the use buttons being put on a sepatare toolbar with a config button at the end. This would save the search bar being altered in size and remove the need for a Configuartion context menu.

Image Manager Shootout / Re: Xnview vs. Irfan View
« Last post by Carol Haynes on August 28, 2005, 03:02 AM »
Don't forget IrfanView can be integrated into Windows Explorer Shell too.

This may have been mentioned but if it has I missed it.

For details see: http://www.baxbex.com/products.html

The tool is at the bottom of the page.

The other tool I use is ShellPicture (also on BaxBex website). The review mentioned this and asked does anyone pay for it? Well, er, yes I did. I find it extremely useful and the printing facilities (though not totally extensive) are quite handy as are the instant format conversion from windows explorer. See screen shots below.

Image Manager Shootout / Re: The new addendum to the ACDSee Review..
« Last post by Carol Haynes on August 28, 2005, 02:51 AM »
I agree too - and if it is any interest to people I found pretty much the same problem with their technical support.

I use a Canaon Digital Rebel/300D and the RAW files appear with very odd colour casts. It might be a colour management problem on my system but it doesn't happen in other software (Such as RAW essentials). Having tried to get support from them to sort out the problem it became very clear that they weren't interested in helping - their ultimate solution was wait for the next patch to be issued! Now that there have been a couple of updates the problem is still unresolved.

Don't get me wrong I still use ACDSee, but not for RAW processing! If you want to use ACDSee for RAW processing make sure you do a thorough evaluation before you part with cash, and don't expect problems to be fixed in any timely fashion.

As someone who has bought most of the ACDSee product line in every version from 3 to 7 (inlcuding FotoSlate etc. - note the PowerPack doesn't include the latest version - if you want that it is a $19.95 upgrade) I still think the program is probably the best available, but their support and response to customers is very hit and miss at best.

PS Just one thought that has been niggling ...

When the app has default search folders can I suggest that the Start Menu folder have the Program subdirectory dropped, otherwise anything in the top level of the Start Menu is missed.

It is just strange that it worked fine the other evening?

I was using the same computer, with the same router connection to the internet ...

This is all I get ...

7661
Don't know how to fix this.

Chat worked for me (as you know) the other evening but now when I try to cnnect it says 127.0.0.1 (banned) and disconnects.

I know that is my 'localhost' IP and not relevant.

How do I get the Java chat client to use my Internet IP ?

I clicked on help but couldn't find any reference to this error.

I am using an 802.11g network with an access point.

The only difference between connecting today and when we chatted is that a second computer is connected to the network ???

Thanks - you're a star.

Sometimes I don't see the wood for the trees.

Don't forget to correct the button routine link too :P

Thanks - yes I use the enable toggle - but I was hoping for an option to temporarily turn it off and renable when I forget ;)

You could use the same menu item - just set the delay in config and in the menu have 'disable' or 'disable for x min' depending on the config setting.

"Start disabled fo x min" would be great, thanks

Tried the new beta but it is still happening.

Oddly after I installed your debug version I restored the original version and it then started happening intermittently in all formats, but then started working fine !!!

The new beta seems to be an intermittent problem too - once it starts to work properly it seems fine, but it didn't work properly to start with ???

All very strange ... :-[

I think I have narrowed it down a bit ...

here are the gui responses with the Debugging version.

The other thing I have noticed is that JPG files respond correctly, but I have been saving my desktop as GIF files, and they do not respond correctly!

ProcessTamer / Request: Auto timed restart after disabling
« Last post by Carol Haynes on August 27, 2005, 05:00 AM »
Would it be possible to add an option to suspend this app for a few minutes (the length of time fixed in options and then applied from a tray option, perhaps 0 time could be an indefinite suspension).

The reason for this is that I have some apps that I am quite happy to calm down sometimes, but at others I want them to be as quick as possible so it isn't practical to set up a single rule to cover this.

Also it would be useful if when it loads during startup there was an option to wait a fixed length of time before it starts working.

I'm not sure but I think it is slowing down my system startup as it lowers lots of apps priority as they start loading.

Cheers

PS. The little arrows in the bottom right corner of many of the icons mean that the icon (when held) is part of a flyout menu group.

's OK I'll forgive your doubt .... just this once ;)

I quite like the idea of a single effects button like Photoshop flyouts.

If you don't know how they work ... you have one button that can produce all the effects, and change its image to reflect the current choice. That is: if you simply click on the button it performs the visible icon function but if you click&hold on the button it displays a menu of all FX buttons from which you choose one and it then becomes the default/visible button.

Tooltips associated with each possible button would be useful so you don't have to remember the images.

OK - I uninstalled and deleted the whole app folder then reinstalled.

The 'save' function definitely only prompts to save if I click the same thumbnail. Other thumbnails load without warning and the altered image stays altered.

The undo bit ...

If I use the functions from the special effects menu they work fine.

If I use the dim outside button on the right then I have to undo 3 times. Is that button connected to the wrong routine ???

Yep - I do have that setting set.

It does take me 3 undos to revert dim outside ??

Strange.

I will try clearing out the whole thing and reinstalling clean and see if an upgrade has left something odd behind ...

Yes I have 'confirm on replace' set but I don't get a warning when I change thumbnails and any changes are saved.

The only time I get a warning about saving changes is if I click on the same thumbnail again.

Here is a sequence:

1) Click on thumbnail A
2) Select a region
3) Click on Grey inside
4) Click on thumbnail B (no warning given)
5) Click on thumbnail A (reloads with changes - can't undo now)

Re undo - maybe my eyes are playing games, but I find that 'grey on the outside' requires three ^Zs or three Edit>Undos to remove it, rather than a single click.

In preferences I have blur inside set to 3, outside to 1

Just a few things I have noticed with version 1.2.6

(1) The confirm save on change option doesn't work properly.

Try this:

Select a region in an image and dim outside.

Now select another image.

The new image is loaded but the changed image is stored in the list without confirmation.

If you go back to the modified image you can't undo the changes either.

(2) ^Z for undoing changes doesn't seem to have the same effect as Edit >Undo

Undoing from the menu undoes the last process, but ^Z seems to undo a little of the last step. Try dimming an outside region again, and using both methods to undo.

Suggestion:

Grey out the Undo & Redo options in the Edit menu when there is nothing to undo or redo

Cheers

Best Firewall / Re: Sygate - Very Strong Firewall
« Last post by Carol Haynes on August 25, 2005, 06:46 PM »
Anyone else feeling Symantec is just getting too damn big.

I'm really frustrated - I moved to Sygate Pro and NOD32 (both excellent products IMHO) to get away from Symantec bloatware, but I guess I'll have to move on again soon if they do their usual trick with Sygate.

Anyone else notice that since they took over Powerquest all the old products (Partition Magic etc) have had little or no development.
