Living Room / Blu-ray design/authoring of the "Neil Young Archives"
« Last post by tomos on August 06, 2010, 05:02 AM »
Article about the design/authoring of the Blu-ray and the DVD 10 box set called "Neil Young Archives, Vol. 1 (1963-1972)". It took me a while to figure out the difference between the Blu-ray and DVD versions - it's explained in the quote from the Amazon review below

When the 10-disk "Neil Young Archives, Vol. 1 (1963-1972)"  was released in 2009, it established a benchmark for what is possible with advanced Blu-ray authoring for multimedia that has yet to be equaled. In Creative COW Magazine's "Heavy Lifting Issue," we asked Megan McKenna to tell us about her team's work on this massive project, over four years in the making.

From an Amazon.com 5 star review by 'AR' explaining the difference between the Blu-ray and DVD versions:
... There is a cheaper DVD version (you can't listen to the songs while browsing at the same time). Also, with the blu-ray set, you can get updates. Today for example, I put a disc in and was able to download a new (well... very old, of course) song that wasn't included already. ...

I think it may be in the user folders but havent checked - it shows up in my uninstaller programme anyways so I'm not worried :)

Sounds promising and is looking very good

Well cause of all the fuss I've actually downloaded a copy :-[ (as I said elsewhere I've always really liked the look of it) but if I actually used it I'd buy a license if it's kept going.

I cant help you much except with uneducated suggestions:
As Chris points out the download traffic will be affected by the change to commercial - well, as long as you charge for personal licenses. That will make it much easier to cope.

I would suggest for non-business use, a reasonable to a low price - sorry I've no idea what the competition costs, but make it cheaper ;)
And a more expensive but not outrageous price for business (just cause we're in business doesnt mean we're making lots of dosh!)

How about this basic license model:
Personal: for one person only - but on a reasonable number of machines (I know there was someone talking on the other thread about having multiple copies on one machine...)
Business: for one machine only (or a limited number) for any number of users

I came across that model lately with roughly the same price for both - seemed fair to me.

I find one machine only for a personal license just, eh, not really nice ;) :)

Damn  :(
So that being said, our only recourse seems to be a release of a complete re-code away from Eric's original code.  :(

I thought that was what ye were planning (or thinking) of doing anyway ?

These anti <brandname> vibes can really ruin the atmosphere of a community

I'd agree, to a certain extent anyways:
there are no apple fanboys here at donationcoder - so I see no reason for the amount of "anti <brandname> vibes" that do go around here on a regular basis.

If you're having trouble with this sort of person elsewhere, you could deal with it elsewhere

Saying that I enjoy a fair bashing - and an occassionial unfair bashing - maybe I'm being hypocritical...

my two cents

The way I see it, it's your call how you go from here. There's no need to be defensive about any decisions - sure, explain them etc. And if you want to try make a living from it even, why the hell not - as long as you take the necessary steps to distance it from the original.
Best of luck! :)

« Last post by tomos on August 05, 2010, 05:24 AM »
Well I didnt have a clue what CDisplay was in it's time, but I read a share of comics online so I thought I'll try an 'I'm feeling lucky' install :)

I see it's main purpose is to read cbr/cbz files - of which I dont have any :D - anyone know where I can get some free or cheap comics?
So I simply tried it out as a viewer.

Observations so far:
it looks great. I like the idea & the shortcuts are nice and easy and very useful. I love the way the arrows simply move the image, even off-screen if you want

problems:
worked fine first couple of times but used a lot of cpu - 20% of dual core. Everything else struggled with it running in the background - jerky mouse etc.
Now it has started seizing up - even before I try to load anything. If I try to change to another app, I cant - alttab doesnt work etc. So I have to kill it.
I'm not sure what could have changed - could it be it's trying to go to the images I last looked at? I did see a flash of an image the last time I started it & then it went to the intro image.

BTW where is the install? I couldnt find it - is it in the unpacked zip file? The shortcut on the desktop doesnt seem to be a normal shortcut - it only shows the path to itself!

I'm not familiar with many PIMs but surely there's a bunch out there that you can link files to - or simply drag-drop them in there.
I'm also not sure what other capabilities you're looking for (?)

Rereading, it sounds like you want a hierarchical template of sorts within the PIM - or would you prefer to keep the folder/file structure and link them to the PIM file?

What have you tried & why didnt you like them?

I believe InfoQube (sqlnotes) will do what you want and is very 'extensible' in terms of using that info and relating it to other info etc., it's portable too (but is still in beta). I use it myself mainly to keep track of files I'm working on. I'm sure there's others, but I think you'll need to give some more details.

(Isn't there a simple notetaker that saves notes as text files - locate those text files you could possibly just duplicate them as a template for the next client - would something that simple do? If so, I'm sure we could track it down)

I spoke too soon.  Since AutoIt3 and AutoHotKey are so similar I confuse the two and forget which app I did in which.  ahk you can just lay another hotkey on top. But not all the number keys have a function when numlock is off.

The best I could do is detect if Numlock is off, and if so, turn it on. I could put it as an .ini file setting.  I think I'd have it default to not interfere with Numlock unless the user sets it to '1' in the .ini file.  That's probably the safest bet.

no need to do it for my sake anyways - cause, as I say, I'm going to stick with numlock on

That's really nice, thanks Miles. I might try the mouse version too as I'm not used to using the numberpad with numlock on (although I always intended getting used to it)
some credits gone your way

btw, on that program it's not difficult to put in duplicate hotkeys so that it will work if Numlock is on or off.  Only thing it won't do is work with Shift.  I already tried it. It must confuse the hotkey handling mechanism.  I'll be updating it soon so it should work with Numlock set either way. If Check for Update works as designed, you should be able to automatically download the zip file when the new version is on the server.

Havent installed the latest yet. I've decided to try sticking with this 'version' with numberlock on - I only ever used those keys for home and end, which are duplicates anyways (I'm now getting some interesting results when typing!)

> I'll be updating it soon so it should work with Numlock set either way
that sounds good too though ;)

I'm THIS close to getting an ipad.  Am I going to be the first DC member with one?  What if I turn into an apple fanboy?  Oh man...you guys are in for it!
:D
have you seen wraith808's post in My iPad Quest ?

As I said in another post, I have been really considering getting an iPad.  I've just been holding off as I do when some new tech captures my attention- to do some due diligence and such.  That quest is over now... and I'm not getting an iPad.
 (see attachment in previous post)
When I saw the image above, I decided to instead gett a tc1100 to see how it stacks up.
Updates on his blog (dont think he's actually gotten it yet)

I agree, though a coworker walked by while I was watching it and I found it mighty hard to explain.

lol that could be fun:
"Oh Hi . . . I'm just checking out some, eh . . . inter-dimensional difficulties  :)  in, eh . . . Worthing"

Living Room / Re: A rant on religiousness about OSes

A couple of academics have now weighed in with a formal paper describing Apple worship as a religion. See this article for links to the abstract and some other information:

Apple as a religion: How the iPhone became divine 'Imbued with sacred significance'

http://www.theregist...apple_as_a_religion/

comes with all the characteristics that make me run a mile from any organised religion, and most 'sub-culture' groups* for that matter (even though I have been guilty at times of, eh, slightly over-enthusiastic support of certain softwares - okay, I confess I have been a fan-boy :-[ - but never to this extreme.)

* not that I consider 'regular' culture much (or any) better... oh dear, I'll shut up now :o

« Last post by tomos on August 03, 2010, 03:49 PM »
I saw this yesterday - I never think of posting this kind of stuff :-[ - I'm more an off-DC-topics kind of guy :)

What sounds really crazy to me is that you lose your privacy settings each time you close IE8 (they say anyways).
After reading this and the other WSJ link posted here lately What the websites know about you about tracking cookies, I had a look at my settings in FF. They have the option to turn these (3rd party cookies) off so well hidden, that I have never noticed it before (a drop-down option under privacy - when changed it reveals a whole bunch of 'custom' options - at least they stick...)

MS have been going a bit crazy with the whole Livemail thing too lately - I experienced it personally, and read about it on Windows Secrets Windows Live shares your Messenger contacts. Maybe they should get together with facebook ;-)

Here's one Question Mark "96 Tears" - high quality recording(s) from a site that's new to me http://www.mydamnchannel.com. I havent quite figured it out yet, there's a whole bunch of channels there, but I think the only channel with music (& boy is it mostly really good) is from Don Was: http://www.mydamncha...kHollywood_1528.aspx (that's another good video there from Guy Clark).

Ohh, this one is real funk(y) Sweet Pea Atkinson "Slow Down" - you can even download that one :-*
7643
thanks for the review Chris  and the discount :)

The normal pricing of USB Safely Remove is, for a Personal License, $20 USD.
Private usage only, One user / multiple computers / lifetime upgrades
-cranioscopical (July 20, 2010, 01:42 PM)

Commercial license is fair enough too:
Commercial License ($20 USD)
Commercial usage, One license per computer / lifetime upgrades / volume discounts
as often in the euro-zone,
you're better off choosing us dollars as payment currency

Well I find I'm good at making the most obvious mistakes possible with a new piece of software - so I think I qualify as a tester (I also tend to enjoy the over & back nature of the interaction).

If I see something that catches my eye I'll post in that thread (your proposal caught my eye Perry but I suspect you'll have no shortage of testers for that!)
7646
not much new here but still maybe worth a look - there a video intro to the Report Window (& one for each of the plugins) here:
http://www.filehamst...ex.php?page=advanced
7647
one last possibility for this job that might be  manageable:
if you've really only modified a few - in an exported spreadsheet of all (or just newest) revisions, sort by date & delete those revised at the same time. You should be left with the ones you modified. You can then find these easily in report window & add comments to them (or add comments to all revisions & then change the comments on the modified files). It's doable but might be a pia and not worth effort.

It is interesting though to figure out how you might approach the next job...
7648
Another suggestion:
Once you find a batch of 'initial revisions', you could add a comment to them en masse (select them and add via context menu) and then sort by comment to exclude them
7649
Then you would have to use the date filter to exclude the initial revision.
ah, good idea. that could well be it. i'll have to experiment. i have some files locked and i "think" i added a directory at some point - which might be messing it up.

i'll try some tests to get to the bottom of it and report back.

try sorting by date - if many files were revised at more or less the same time you can rule them out as being 'initial revisions'. Will still be fun with >2000 files :)
7650
hmm. hopefully i'm just being dumb...

i was hoping the report feature would allow me to see which files have been revisioned, i.e. only the files that have been modified within a Watch.

could be any day, any time, with any number of saves. i just want to know which files i've tampered with and which i've definitely left alone.

not sure I understand exactly (I get the feeling I'm missing something):

It depends possibly on how you work - did you use FH to do an initial revision of the watched folders? And you want to see what was modified since?
Then you would have to use the date filter to exclude the initial revision.
