Powershell can do some very nice things for scripting, like piping objects and not just text.  But it can also be pigheaded about others, like some of its formatting options.  Required for working with new releases of Exchange, Sql, Sharepoint, active directory.  I keep telling myself that familiarity breeds....... resigned acceptance?

Interesting - TEA is similar to Dolphin Text Editor Menu (which I like a lot) but a slightly different take on the idea.  I upgraded to Listary Pro  the same day I tried it out, but didn't check out the rest of the web site.

I bought it at full price after the last offer expired, and have also been patiently waiting :-)

This is from the help file about Cyclic Rebooting.  You would need to set up the Auto-Login section and enable it, then set up a shortcut in your Startup folder to the program, making sure to include the -Reboot option.  Then set the number of reboots you want on the screen and click Reboot Now to start...

"This page gives a brief description of how a PC can be set-up to reboot itself in a cycle.

Step1 – Select and save Rebooter settings
Start Rebooter and use the “Clear” button to return the reboot count to 0.
Set the ‘Maximum Reboots’ value to the number of cycles required.  <--- MY NOTE: how many times you want to reboot
Set the other parameters in Rebooter. (Reboot type, Delay, etc). Don’t set the delay value to be too short, as you want Windows to fully boot before starting the next cycle. 20 Seconds is a good value.   <--- MY NOTE: you may want it to be longer than 20 seconds!
Save the settings, with the ‘Save Options’ button.

Step2 – Create an autorun shortcut
Create an autorun short cut that points back to Rebooter executable. See the auto-run page for help on how to do this. The shortcut must use the  ‘-Reboot’ command line parameter.

Step3 – Start the cycle
Click on the “Reboot Now” button to start the cycle.

Each time Rebooter is started with the ‘–Reboot’ command line parameter, the reboot counter in incremented. Once the reboot counter becomes equal to the Maximum Reboots value no further cycles will be executed and the reboot counter will be reset to zero (ready for the next run).

Stop clicking on shit before I read the instructions.
;D  Happened to me just the other day, couldn't quite remember why I had downloaded TunnelVision or just what it did...

(But afterward I had great fun in the office with it! :P

There are lots of programs to do pieces of the things you want, but nothing I know of that puts them all together.

* Scheduled reboots by Poweroff
* Multiple reboots by Rebooter
* Boot into safe mode by BootSafe

Poweroff at least has a very good command line so you could script most of its actions as desired.

This stuff is the bomb.  It makes a lot of awkward stuff easy.  Listen, it costs nothing for non-commercial use, you owe it to yourself to give it a try if you use Excel and you value your time.  I started by using a bunch of the text functions for formatting:

and the other categories are just as powerful and varied.

Maybe, after installation, before the first time older screenshots are moved into the archive folder, you could pop up a dialog to ask the user how he would like it handled.  One question, one time, and then the user is aware of it and can change the setting later if he wishes.

I switched to the free version of PDF-XChange Viewer, which had been highly recommended to me.  I've been very happy with it ever since.  I see that Gizmo's Best Freeware site lists PDF-XChange Viewer as its top pick:
http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-non-adobe-pdf-reader.htm.
I switched based on Gizmo's suggestion too, until I found that the software had some difficulties rendering several work-related forms properly.  Switched to Sumatra and have been happy since then.  However I'm always happy to revisit my choices when something better comes along, so I pulled down copies of STDU Reader and Bluebeam to look at.

General Software Discussion / Re: Atari Remakes for 40th Anniversary

Pong was a little disappointing; the graphics weren't as smooth as I would have thought, and the ball had a tendency to fall in the gap between the edge of the field and the edge of the paddle at its farthest.

I really wanted to see Defender, that was the bomb back on my Atari 400!

I used ReOpen (same folks as FolderCache, the next program down on the web page) for awhile before I found Listary.

I wonder if you couldn't overcome that, to some extent, with a liveCD with TrueCrypt on it?  (Assuming, of course that you'd used TrueCrypt to encrypt the disk.)

Depending on where the failure is, the device should be mountable on another machine with Truecrypt running.  I've done that while testing, but unfortunately the disk didn't croak on me :-)

The usable lifespan of a broken disk is short enough, adding in the complexity and disk access to get the drive mounted might make it tougher to get anything off.

I could never convince my old company to use full disk encryption... even though I figured out how to work around users forgetting their boot password, the concensus was apparently the execs just didn't want to be bothered with another password...

That's very strange... I did a comparison a couple years ago between Windows and several of the other accelerators (Fastcopy, Supercopier 2, Copy Handler, FF Copy, Ultracopier and a couple more, all that would be no cost for commercial use, which ruled out Teracopy) to see what they did locally and over a lan.  It wasn't a double blind, duplicate hardware kind of test but it was the same sets of files and targets.  In those tests Fastcopy was the clear winner speed-wise (although the interface is lousy, which is not an issue if you're scripting something).  A few others were clumped behind that, generally not too far behind.  Windows was never the fastest option, although some of the utilities were slower in some of the tests.

I don't have the details any more, but that said, the real end result is that I have Supercopier installed on my personal PCs.  It was almost as fast as Fastcopy and does a good job with the management part that has been mentioned, and it has always been reliable.  That was the surprising part to me -- with half of the other utilities I tested, I had issues with installation, lockups or copy failures.  To my mind that immediately ruled them out.

That was back when I could do stuff like that for my previous employer.  I can't recall if was running XP or 7 at the time, but would have been 32 bit in eiother case.  Would probably be worth revisiting.

How did you do your throughput tests?  I just got a laptop with usb 3 ("super speed") ports, and the first full backup to an external usb 3 hard drive was significantly faster than usb 2 speeds (as I would hope), but I haven't done any specific measurements.  (It's kind of moot, it's not like I have an esata port on anything...)  Anyway, did you use a utility, or just queue up a hundred gigs and see how long it took?  FreeFileSync and watch what it said?

As long as we're on the topic, readers might want to take a look at several free Kernel tools that let you access PST, OST and EDB files without requiring Outlook or Exchange to be installed.  I've tried several of these and they are worth much more than their cost.

Right click on the folder, go to properties, go to security.  select the administrators group and you will see no permissions checked.  Check full permissions (or depending on o/s version, click edit and then select administrators and set full permissions) and then ok your way back.  Then you should be able to delete the leftovers.
