The end, I hope, to this little problem of mine, is a $20 program named Desktop Icon Toy - and it really is a piece of toy. I was so charmed by the features of this little app' that I forgot all about 'free' and 'always hide icons' and 'right-click menu', but have taken an all new attitude:
icons on the desktop can be funny! :P

This screenshot was captured at 10:37 >

IconToy.jpg
What screenshot?
Will someone get this stupid attach system a useful help section!!

Hmm.. on the screenshot the icons are forming a clock, and the clock is correct.

Of course the icons can dance and whatever you would like them to do - Icon Toy has MANY
features - but the prime feature to me is that they stay all hidden until mouseover (if that is what you want); they will not even display if I place the cursor in the middle between two icons! This is the way I would have liked skrommels program to act. And this toy-program is precisely as tyrannical as I wanted the other programs, I've tested, to be; no more displaying the icons for a second hundred of times a day - no, the icons really stay hidden all the time until mouseover - and I kept my right-click menu. Superb!

After edit: Sorry for the harsh words in red: this is really strange to me:
The picture does not display in my Firefox - only in Internet Explorer 6 ???

Skrommel wrote a small program
Yes, I tried that one too, but didn't understand it. Skrommel writes: "Hide the desktop icons when the mouse is elsewhere." "Elsewhere" is "on the sys-tray toolbar..." This message area toolbar (what is the correct term?) is 28 pixels high (Win2K), and my screen is 768 pixels - and the icons will display whenever the mouse is at the remaining 740 pixels out of 768. So maybe it should say: "see if you can hide the desktop icons."

I don't like the idea about tweaking Win2K/Explorer, because it will need a PC restart to change this setting every time I would need to see/hide the icons (every time I install a new program I'll check if it made an icon on the desktop). No, for now it seems that I'll have to say goodbye to the right-click menu, and goodday to some tyrannical 'hide icons' program, like Wallmaster. Only, this program will not hide its own icon from the sys-tray,  and there are already too many icons in my sys-tray. So I'll have to keep on looking for another 'hide icons' program.

Any more suggestions? Please!  :tellme:

General Software Discussion / Re: General brainstorming for Note-taking software
« Last post by Curt on January 05, 2007, 12:09 PM »
Forgive me for not having read all 15 pages on this thread, but I just have to tell about this free note-taking program I am using: Flashnote by Softvoile Company.

http://softvoile.com/flashnote/

- but on the other hand; a trick picture may tell a lot more than my words:

flashnote.GIF

Of course there is a hotkey of your own choice - hit the hotkey and Flashnote will open like a flash. Write at once (no need to place cursor), and forget everything about "save" - when it is written, it is saved / safed! Hit the hotkey again, or press Esc, and the program is gone at once.

It is so easy and so fast, you should love it ... I do!   :-*

I just found out by now that a new version 2.1 have just been launched, December 15' 2006. I am looking forward to try it out. The picture here is the old version 2.0.1
Version 2.1:
    * Added: Possibility to specify path to database
    * Added: Export whole database to txt files

What's running gives you info on everything that's running!!: processes, services, modules, ip connections, drivers, startup and gives you system info. It allows you to, stop, start, delete, disable, edit( process priority as an example).

WhatsRunning is most certainly a fine info center. I really like the modes 'Services' and 'Modules', you don't get these informations from many programs. And the 'Take a Snapshot' feature is brilliant

But as a startup manager it will not compete,  it is not even listing half of the programs! - which seems strange, because in the other modes WhatsRunning will list an awesome number of processes.

, but see http://tech.groups.y...ftware/message/15895 over at the Software Killer Apps forum for a discussion of when such applications are beneficial and at what point (in terms of hardware) they cease to be useful...
- interesting debate at SKA-forum, but I don't think StartRight was ever about making the PC upstart faster, but safer - and that is why I use it. Before, 3 or 4 programs would not display their icons in the sys-tray, because of too many programs fighting each other at Windows upstart, but StartRight fixed that problem.
7458

I think a far more practical GUI would facilitate:
1.  Sorting the programs in the order that you want them to start.
2.  Adding a delay time that represents the period the system must wait before starting the next program.  This is because programs hog the CPU for varying periods.  You can measure (& change) the time it takes a program to finish starting & not worry about clashing with other programs in the startup list.
Nice description of the free program I use:
Jackass JoeJoe's StartRight  :-*
http://www.joejoesoft.com/vcms/113/

- but it could need a nicer look and even more features ...

Features:
- program executing ordering
- custom delays
- Auto-Tune delays based on CPU usage (optional)
- new item notification (optional)
- automatically disable all new programs (optional)
- pause or stop program execution (optional)

... My problem is that ... the icons will display for a second hundred of times a day.
IconDesk too will display the icons for a second every now and then, mostly now...
It seems the problem not is Iconoid or any other program, but my very own Explorer.  :-[

Maybe the solution really has to be to say goodbye to right-click menu on the desktop.

Mouser, please consider a version that does not display an icon in the tray?

Living Room / Sherlock Holmes and Texefex
« Last post by Curt on January 01, 2007, 07:53 AM »
" Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson go on a camping trip. After a good dinner and a bottle of wine, they retire for the night, and go to sleep.

Some hours later, Holmes wakes up and nudges his faithful friend:
-
"Watson, look up at the sky and tell me what you see."

"I see millions and millions of stars, Holmes" replies Watson.

"And what do you deduce from that?"

Watson ponders for a minute.

"Well, astronomically, it tells me that there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets. Astrologically, I observe that Saturn is in Leo. Horologically, I deduce that the time is approximately a quarter past three. Meteorologically, I suspect that we will have a beautiful day tomorrow. Theologically, I can see that God is all powerful, and that we are a small and insignificant part of the universe. What does it tell you, Holmes?"

Holmes is silent for a moment. "Watson, you idiot!" he says. "Someone has stolen our tent!"

:D

The program is Texefex from Blacksun and is $20

Happy New Year!  :-*

...  - in Denmark it is rain and storm right now ...  :(

---

On this thread I was recommended Wallmaster and Iconoid in order to hide the icons from my desktop. My problem is that Wallmaster will also disable right-click menu on the desktop, and (on my PC) Iconoid is not tyrannical enough - the icons will display for a second hundred of times a day.

I can make the icons disappear, by tweaking Windows, but this too will prevent right-click menu on desktop.

Do you know of a good free program to hide the icons from the desktop - which will not prevent right-click menu?
I use Windows 2000 Pro.

General Software Discussion / Not free, but free, X-Setup
« Last post by Curt on December 20, 2006, 09:38 AM »
For a month I have been trying out X-Setup, "The mother of all tweaker".

I very much like the way I can tweak my old Win2K in any way I want. The program never said anything about "This is a trial - you have nn days left", no, but if I asked, it would answer: "you are within trial period". Period!

I tweaked this and that - 1900 tweaks it will offer for Windows, they say (not 1900 for YOUR Win, but some for 95, some for 98, some for ME, some for 2000, some for XP, and some for Vista) - and when four weeks had passed, I started thinking about buying the program, because I would not want all these new settings to go away. Well, of course the trial expired when I had no money, and I thought "Now I will have to tweak all these settings once more, when I get some money and buy the program" - but to my big surprise all the settings were saved!

The people behind X-Setup are fine engineers, but poor merchants. You can use this program for a full month, and tweak your Windows big time, and then remove the program and keep the new settings!
- and later install a new version and tweak even more!

It is not even expensive; $15 + VAT is a very fine price.

The all new 9 BETA is still a little buggy, but otherwise ready for Vista.

But I still need to understand what I am doing wrong, since Win2K will not remember the new toolbar after restart.

Now I think I've got it. I always use the program Quick ShutDown to close my PC. The shutdown really will be quick - but maybe too quick! It seems that saving new personal settings can fail. Because, I created another toolbar on the desktop, but this time I used Process Explorer to close the PC, this way giving Windows more time to save personal settings. And it worked; the new toolbar was remembered and ready to go after restart. I then restarted, using Quick ShutDown again, and the new toolbar is staying at the right position.

So now 'everything' (on this matter) is okay

Actually, I use the "WallMaster" wallpaper manager and I'm pretty sure it has a feature to hide the desktop icons, even when not using XP.

Yes, it will hide the icons in Win2K as well
- but it will not remember this setting after startup!

Sorry, I was too quick to complain! The answer is: WallMaster Control Panel > Options > Hide desktop icons using force mode (not available on XP).

But I still need to understand what I am doing wrong, since Win2K will not remember the new toolbar after restart.  ::)

won't work because you don't have winxp. let's see.

If that option is missing, there's no way you can do this..

You're right, this feature is not part of Win2K  :(

Can this be a snack??

you can also place that bar on the left or on the right of the screen, where it won't affect the buttons on the caption on the windows.
Yes, I have done that with the new toolbars, one for My Documents, and one for My Pictures. It's a little funny with a toolbar on every side of the screen, but someday I might grow up...  :P

I am so disappointed that the hidden icons on the desktop, also are hidden in the new toolbar:

I hide my the icons on my desktop so i can enjoy my wallpaper! :D

If the toolbar you add is the "Desktop" then icons for -every item- will show up in the toolbar.  It's like having an auto-hide copy of your desktop!  It is so useful!  especially considering it's already built in to Windows!

Hmm...
At first the icons were 'blur' on the desktop, but present in the new toolbar.
Now the icons on the desktop are all hidden, but also gone from the new toolbar!!

Are there more than one level when we click "hide" in Properties in a shortcut?? I know only of one. The icons are hidden on the desktop, but now they are also hidden in the toolbar. No, not hidden; they are not there! Arghh! Maybe this ís a difference between Win2K and XP??

You're right. And it is not even as expensive as most. But it may somehow be too complicated to be as stable as one would like it to be.

Did it stick?

That was the problem. I did not push it all the way to the top of the desktop.
Now it is invisible.

I am really looking forward to try this out. So many years with Win2K and I didn't know about this feature. Ha! Well, I claim it myself; I really am an IT-analphabetic  :P

Thank you for telling!
