Why use an entire CMS when you could just use a stand-alone shopping cart? Assuming that's all the thing needs to do.

Because overkill is fun~!  ;D

VS 2005 will only let you do up to .NET 2.0. Which is fine for most things. However, you may want to use .NET 3.5, or a component may need that, so you'll want 2008/10 most likely. Basically, 2010 just gives you more options so you don't need to think about things as much.

DNN is free as well, so there's no cost associated there other than your infrastructure, which you already have.

I looked at that CP page. I don't know why you'd want to go that route though. I don't see any advantage to getting your hands dirty when you don't need to.

I look at things as just getting them done, and any coding that I can avoid is time I can spend on other things. (Like getting rid of Access databases~! :) )

DNN is super-easy to administer as well. You really should have a good look at it, as it sounds like it will do everything you want for little or no work and no up-front costs.

Damn, that is a cool little widget. It would suck to see it get hurt in the crossfire. But it do seem that the fickle finger of fate is pointing at Apple's bung.

I tested it out and bought it -- it's excellent. I'm using it in Photo Resizer, and will use it in other software as well. It's just a very slick deployment tool.

I was a bit puzzled when I first moused-over the image there. Wyatt, the guy that writes the software, is a regular poster over at JoS.

DNN?
-Stoic Joker (May 25, 2011, 06:25 PM)

I'd assume DotNetNuke.

Yes.

It's ASP.NET with MS SQL Server in the back. There are other providers though, so you could run it with Oracle or MySQL as well. It can use MS SQL Server Express too.

On a semi-related note, for "ASPX or not ASPX", I like to drop extensions as they contain no useful information for the URL. In DNN this module lets you customize your URLs very quickly, easily, and RELIABLY:

http://www.ifinity.c..._Master_DNN_SEO_Urls

I would highly recommend that module as I have used it and found it to be reliable. I'm using it at Super Simple for URLs like:

Etc.

I find having .../Default.aspx or .../About.aspx kind of dumb. There's no reason to have that junk in a URL.

At the moment I'm working on a spec for a site, and have decided to run with .../en/... - .../ko/... - .../ja/... in order to separate languages used at the site. I'll also use the iFinity module above for the site. It will make things nice an meaningful. I could end up going with something like:

.../en/About
.../ko/About

or a localized equivalent with something like this:

.../en/About
.../ko/회사소개

You get the same kind of thing in WordPress too:

http://cynic.me/2011...izer-korea-number-1/

I like that for blogs as it's clear about when it was as well as what it's about. A lot of large sites drop the day in the URL, but 6 of 1...

And since you're primarily running Windows stacks, DNN is just a drop dead simple solution.

I'd say use VS 2010 as you can use any .NET version there. It's like having 2005 and 2008 at the same time.

But there are a ton of things out there that can help you get it done fast. There's no reason to build that when you can buy it or get it for free. DNN has a shopping cart already built in and you can get commercial modules for it.

Say you end up spending $500 or $1000 on a solution... Check it out and figure how long it would take you to build it, and then figure out how much your time costs. It's highly unlikely that you can build something for the same or lower.

I did almost the exact same thing using DNN and the included shopping cart. It sends email notifications and saves the transaction in DNN with a state, e.g. In progress, ordered, delivered, whatever, etc. I used "clientname.domain.com" and used restricted access for who can login. The client got a login there, and could order whatever they wanted. I sorted tabular data in Excel, then used regex in EditPlus to create SQL that I ran directly in the database (or could have run from inside DNN too) to populate the tables with large numbers of products.

Then there's this:

Automation - Not a good sign (hehe).

@Edvard - great find!  :Thmbsup:

The Quiet Earth website is a great resource for post-apocalyptic and dark genre sci-fi and (more recently) horror flicks. I like to visit it whenever I'm feeling a little too optimistic or happy about our future.  ;D

That looks like an amazing site!

Now, from only a quick glance... I pray that they make it easy to buy...

Yes.

Good grief... That graphic has definitely motivated me. Scary stuff.

I saw a video with a computer/science fellow using a tread mill while working (he was walking).

So I think I may end up trying something like that. I sit way too much and I'm not losing weight. I'm fat and need to get rid of it. (Well, not that fat -- but fatter than I'd like. I'm not round or anything.)

Oh yeah, and Deozaan... for sitting all day and not gaining weight...

Little Voice Commander / Re: Adding spoken word option
« Last post by Renegade on May 25, 2011, 07:38 AM »
The TTS (text to speech) has gotten a *LOT* better, and for many applications it would be fine.
This however is a perfect case where recorded human voice is superior, since it's of a relatively limited scope of predefined words, and it's nice to let people customize it with their own voice if they want.

I just thought... I have a Canadian accent, which is similar to North Dakota (I think). The accent issue is still there. It should be fine for most purposes though.

Little Voice Commander / Re: Adding spoken word option
« Last post by Renegade on May 25, 2011, 04:37 AM »
I was talking to app about features to add.  One idea that would be really easy to add is to have an option where the program can speak what's shown, so if kid types B and it shows "B is for Bees" with a photo of a bee, then it would speak the words "B is for Bees".

I dont think the text-to-speech is good enough, so i'd like to use recorded mp3 files of a real person speaking.

The files should be named word_1.mp3 so for example "bee_1.mp3", etc for all the words found in the default VpMedia directory. the # is so that it can support different alternative voices.

I will add the feature if someone volunteers to record the 50-60 mp3 spoken word files that would be needed to accompany the initial image set.  Any volunteers?

Does anyone have one of those sexy, deep radio voices?

I'd volunteer as I need to do some setup testing, and will be doing a bunch of that kind of stuff anyways.

Check out my voice at http://www.dotnetpreacher.com/ to see if it would be ok. I do NOT have a super-sexy-swinging voice though.

If you need recommendations for professional voice actors, I know a few that I could/would recommend.

But let me know if my voice will work ok. Don't be afraid to say no though -- I know my voice isn't movie preview material.

My beef with YouTube is a beef with Google -- they simply are not capable of managing logins properly. It's a disaster. I have to fight each and every time I want to login to YouTube, Ad Words, and Ad Sense. They're all mixed up and impossible to deal with. Like how hard is it to not f**k up a login? Microsoft Live logins work perfectly, everywhere, across everything. I've NEVER had a problem with an MS login, and it's the same thing. YouTube & Google... Jeez... It's a mess.

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Review of VistaDB
« Last post by Renegade on May 24, 2011, 06:30 PM »
For Oracle and MS SQL Server, their footprint is simply massive. The download and installation is again a major thing to deal with.

I had a quick look at the Alpha Five site, and saw this:

Try the  interactive Codeless Ajax examples that ship with v10. (All were created without coding!)

It sounds like it is in a completely different sector, and not really a competitor to VistaDB. It looks more end-user oriented. VistaDB is squarely in the developer camp as a high-end database component. If you look at the tools for it, it's nothing like Access -- the tools are entirely development-centric.

The thing with VistaDB is that you get:

  • Most DB engine functionality in MS SQL Server
  • T-SQL
  • Low footprint
  • Strong SQL types
  • etc.

You also have a clear upgrade path to MS SQL Server!

In some testing for an application I'm writing, I keep logs for some user actions so that they can get the data later. The first INSERTs take about 350 ms or so while it loads and ramps up, with subsequent INSERTs taking 20 ms or something like that. i.e. VistaDB is very fast.

Alpha Five didn't mention anything about using other tools with it, which makes it look like you either develop entirely in A5, or not.

So is Ryan a special form of Brian? Or is Brian just what people understand when you tell them your name?

Ryan/Brian are just versions of the same name. I really don't know how people the "b" sound in there. That just seems odd to me.

Names have different spellings/pronunciations in different places.

e.g. John, Giovanni, Johan, etc. Those are all the same name.

Smith, Smythe, and Smyth are all the same name, but different spellings.

It's the exact same thing as cognates in different languages. e.g. noire, negro meaning black, or beer, biere, or computer, 컴퓨터 (computer as a loan word in Korean).

I guess $185,000 is a bit much just to have a TLD matching your last name. Maybe if you've got a veeeery big family and collect money from everyone ;)

Well, if I were to get my family "name", I'd have at least 3 different spellings that I know of. A 3 for 1 deal would make it worth it. I'm sure there are more. But I would want the more common "Smith" as well. :)

But think about it -- there's GOT to be at least 1 "John" or "Steve" or "Jason" or "Mary" or "Lucy" Smith/Smyth out there that would be willing to pay for john.smith, and more than just a few bucks. There's only 1 chance at that domain, then it's gone forever. Or at least gone for a lifetime. ;)

I would love to have ryan.smyth. that would simply be very cool to have. However, I'd need to get brian.smith as well because few people can actually spell my name properly.  >:(

It's almost here:

http://www.zdnet.com...9315570.htm?feed=rss

So long dotcom. The easy way to consult the internet will soon be via "dot anything".

In a worldwide internet revolution to be announced next month, web addresses will expand beyond dotcom, with governments, businesses and entrepreneurs expected to rush to apply for signature domain names.

So, you could have .donation or .coder or .applefanboihaterz or .wtf.

I can think of many TLDs that I'd love to start up. .nsfw would be fun. :P .ceo would be a cool vanity TLD for CEOs.

The squatters that snap up some of them will have to have very deep pockets though.

Some TLDs that I think will get snapped up quick?

NSFW TLDs
.anal
.facials
.fuck
.perverted or sexual stuff of any nature

It would be cool to be able to snap up a few. I think I'd want:

.ryan
.smyth

Especially .smyth. It would be excellent to have your last name as a TLD.

.cs would be an awesome domain for C# related sites, though I doubt the market potential for it or any other vanity TLD for any technology.

Regarding the Cook Islands, so therefore NSFW
The Cook Islands might want to register .cock as they already have .co.ck. I tried to get them to sell me isa.co.ck, but no luck. :(

I can see .中, .韓, and .日 getting snapped up in quick order.

Actually, .國 and .国 are technically the same, so would you get a 2 for 1 deal on them? (And variants like .囯 for a 3 for 1?) :P ;D

Or .rhyme and .rime? Any 2 for 1 deals there?
