It sure is hard to be number one... If Vista had been named XP SP 3, you would all commemorate Microsoft, wouldn't you  ;)

Thank you, Edvard, you cleared my mind:

Yes, you're right.

- as I wrote in my first post:

- Undelete PLUS found 9839 files - Recuva Beta 1: 9802

But you sure made a point - well, THE point:
I also don't see the point of speed++ in a recovery app, surely the most important feature must be the ability to actually recover stuff? I somehow doubt that the superfast tools are as thorough as the ones that do a full sector-based scan of your disk.

I followed the link from Lashiec and used PhotoRec, a command line program that will do "full sector-based scan of your disk." This little app is out off this world! After one hour the program stopped, having scanned only 15% (expected full scan of my 38 GB: 8 hours)(I should add that it will scan and recover in one and the same process). Why did it stop scanning and recovering after only 15%??  Because my harddisk ran out of free space! 1.5 GB had been recovered. 1½ GIGA - with only 15% scanned!!!

Before anyone gets all exited, I should add that 99.9% recovered files were text files you would not care to recover.

It also recovered 195 small mp3 files (sounds) and 300 small pictures, but why would I want to recover 60,000 text files? No, thank you! Sixty thousands text files, with only 15% scanned. Talk of a undelete program! :o

Another fast recovery program is the free Restoration Version 2.5.14 (from Snapfiles) - not as fast as Recuva, but fast anyway: 3 minutes to scan my PC.

Restoration has one clever feature which the other recovery tools mentioned on this thread are missing: it will offer to delete all unrecoverable files found. I clicked 'yes' and was relieved of 10,000 files!

Bits du Jour is featuring aHa soft's ArtIcon and ArtIcon Pro on Tuesday the 23rd... aHa's products were reviewed favourably in the recent donationcoder review, but note the caveat about customer service response at the end of the review! If Bits du Jour lives up to its usual deals, you can expect 35%-90% off the price for the app (ArtIcon is $29.95 and the Pro version is $39.95).

Thank you for this help, Darwin.
I've tried ArtIcon Pro for a couple of days and have desiced to buy it today at Bits du Jour at $24.

However, I'll have to say that I am most certainly not impressed with the offer. The normal price for the Pro version is said to be $40 - but I installed the program last Friday, tested it, and pressed "Feedback"... and was asked why I was removing the program (I was not, I was trying to give feedback), and without any more questions asked I was offered to have it at $30 - and so $24 is not much of an offer, is it.  >:(

However, the program is fine, so I am buying it anyway.  :D
- but if the price was $40 I would choose another program...

I have had no problems with support questions. I asked a question Friday night and received their answer by Tuesday morning.

Instead, I have two physical monitors, and move "junk" on one, and the stuff I work with on the other. For instance an editor and a shell on the primary monitor, and msn+irc+API reference+firefox on the other.

- I think this was the most useful answer to me so far!

IF I've understood all this by now, then my earlier guess / question was right:

Well, maybe I can see it... Is it to keep 'overview' and stay organized in order? Sort of: 'one thing at a time' - 'this desktop for this kind of job, and that desktop for that different kind of job'?

?? - you tell me  :tellme:
7432

I think you're getting there, curt ;)

"there" - hmmm... and just 'where' might that be? Mars? How is it up there? What's the story behind that signature? It sure sounds interesting  :tellme:
7433
EhEh.. It's "virtual", that's why it is hard to explain.
(...)
Do you understand what i mean?

- I do understand that if one can't understand the theory, another and often better way to understand is by doing. So I just might try this thing out some day.
7434
Well, maybe I understand you, jgpaiva, ... time will show...  :-[

- but it is still the desktop only, not the PC, that is virtual, isn't it?
If a program is designed to open in one instance only, then you are not able to work with that program on four desktops, are you?
7435
Thank you Curt! Your channeling my thoughts exactly. I've always wondered about the rationale behind Virtual Desktops as well.
Frankly, I am not wondering about the rationale, but trying to understand at all  :-[
7436
It's like having several monitors in one, and only show one at a time. Extremely useful once you get the hang of it.

'Several monitors in one' - the purpose being? Forgive me if I am just plain narrow minded, but what can you do with more monitors in one, that you can't do with more windows open on that one and same screen?

This thread is so far going way over my head. I have no idea of what a 'virtual desktop' is, and have never clicked at 'Active Desktop > Adjust Desktop/ New / Show web content' - well, once, and then something terrible happened, and I never tried again. If the two subjects, virtual and active desktop, are connected at all?

Can 'you' explain to me what a virtual desktop really is? And why I would want such a thing? Do I need a manager if I have one virtual desktop only? - and then, why I would want more than one?

Sorry for asking such beginner's questions, but the subject never caught my interest before - and I don't think Microsoft's explanation on 'Virtual Desktop' is much of a help, it made me even more confused.  :tellme:

ready at Monday. It will also support compressed and sparse files and
some FAT32 bags will be fixed.

I should add that the Recuva scan will 'transfer' some time critical operations into the processing phase (filling State, or Status Column, etc.), and will give a lot less informations on the result, than Undelete PLUS - thereby saving scanning time.

But of course Recuva is still a lot faster. I'll hope their next version will give a hole lot more info on the scanning. Undelete PLUS is a fine example on relevant info.

I wrote the author of Undelete Plus, but he has so far been more keen on finding faults in Recuva, than speeding up his baby's scanning time. But time will show.

Ads by google on 'file recovery'.

I performed a very short mini test on this app, and compared it to Undelete PLUS

Undelete PLUS would use 25 minutes to scan my PC

- now hold on to your hat:

Recuva Beta 1 would use 52 seconds to do the same!

- Undelete PLUS found 9839 files - Recuva Beta 1: 9802

Other that that, you can tell that Undelete Plus is version 2.5.2 - it is far more finished and userfriendly, and comes with a user interface in 24 languages. If that is enough to waith another 24 minutes is up to the user. I would think that for both programs there has to be a better 'undelete' program somewhere out there...

« Last post by Curt on January 18, 2007, 05:23 PM »
For some time I've been looking for an icon editor & manager. I've found many, but none that was both cheap and good. Of course I've found some very fine apps, but they were too expensive for me; $30 for an editor, and $40 - 60 for the combination, editor and manager.

But of course there must be at least one that I don't know of... ?
Do you know of any fine icon editor & manager, reasonable priced (or free)?  :tellme:

I am driving Win2K

(...) Radio Denmark Toolbar. Comes from www.conduit.com or www.effectivebrand.com They are upfront with data collection I think but some of the toolbars have creative links, trying to make money without telling you. Very much encouraged by Conduit. So you often get sponsored searches, affiliate links. They used to force own search engine or at least one they had a share in, not sure if that has changed. 1000s of toolbars and not all that bad. You can always make your own, takes few minutes.

Same goes for The Office Letter Premium Edition Toolbar.
It sure can be hard to change an image...

I watch my PC closely and there is absolutely nothing to complain about regarding the two toolbars' I'net contact - no adds, no false results - nothing is wrong.

I've got an okay result using ToolbarCop: http://www.snapfiles.../get/toolbarcop.html

- No, the miss-feature is still there, but I was temporally confused by some talk of "Double click to search".

Please include the mouse in the hotkey settings!

Point the cursor to the word, and press a button & click the mouse
- it is easier and faster, says this long time Babylon user

No... I meant windows... right click on start, properties, task bar, hide inactive icons at the bottom.  You can set the icon for ahk to never show...
Smart - but sadly there is no such in Win2K - no 'properties' on Start.

Will someone get this attach system a useful help section!?
Mouser already did, Curt.. Check out https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=1996.0
i have just finished some modifications to the forum software to allow inline insertion of attachments (images,etc.).  This should help a lot in posts where the text refers to images a lot and you used to have all the attached images just shown at the footer of the post.
(...)
The new feature supports a bunch of different tags that let you control how images are displayed:
Code:
[ Invalid Attachment ] says insert normal attachment #specified there
for example, [ Invalid Attachment ] shows attachment #1 image here:

Every one of you forgot that one will never see these 'Link Inline Image' options, unless one is starting a thread, or quoting. Otherwise one will only get "Quick Reply" without this option.

When one then tryes to start a thread and insert a picture, one will see a button named "Insert Image" (tooltip on mouseover) placed before 'Link Inline Image'. Will you say that it is logic that one shall NOT use this 'Insert Image' button to insert an (uploaded) image??!!

I still think someone should write a more useful help section - please  :-*
I guess you all use this 'Link Inline Image' so often that you don't stop to think about what the page is telling...
