If you have time, check Sugar: The Bitter Truth.

That was quite interesting, takes a good lecturer to make even the biochemistry stuff not that dull.

also posted, with some discussion, in this thread: How much soda (pop) do you drink?

Flickr free version - only 200 photos visible
Picasa - file names available with click on more information

wow, I didnt come across that anywhere about Flickr, definitely a thumbs down

I'll edit the first post with the info about Picassa.
The inability to sort was a problem for me in all the sites, but Picassa's default sort from old to new just doesnt make any sense to me...

General Software Discussion / Amazon Storage(S3)/Web Services Offer
« Last post by tomos on November 02, 2010, 05:16 AM »
A good deal from Amazon for the first year (for totally new customers only)
I'm only familiar with the S3 web storage myself.

AWS [Amazon Web Services] Free Usage Tier*
As part of the AWS Free Usage Tier, you can get started with Amazon S3 for free. Upon sign-up, new AWS customers receive 5 GB of Amazon S3 storage, 20,000 Get Requests, 2,000 Put Requests, 15GB of data transfer in, and 15GB of data transfer out each month for one year.
Link:
http://aws.amazon.com/free/
AWS Free Usage Tier (Per Month):

    * 750 hours of Amazon EC2 Linux Micro Instance usage (613 MB of memory and 32-bit and 64-bit platform support) – enough hours to run continuously each month*
    * 750 hours of an Elastic Load Balancer plus 15 GB data processing*
    * 10 GB of Amazon Elastic Block Storage, plus 1 million I/Os, 1 GB of snapshot storage, 10,000 snapshot Get Requests and 1,000 snapshot Put Requests*
    * 5 GB of Amazon S3 storage, 20,000 Get Requests, and 2,000 Put Requests*
    * 30 GB per of internet data transfer (15 GB of data transfer “in” and 15 GB of data transfer “out” across all services except Amazon CloudFront)*
    * 25 Amazon SimpleDB Machine Hours and 1 GB of Storage**
    * 100,000 Requests of Amazon Simple Queue Service**
    * 100,000 Requests, 100,000 HTTP notifications and 1,000 email notifications for Amazon Simple Notification Service**

In addition to these services, the AWS Management Console is available at no charge to help you build and manage your application on AWS.

Re Flickr:
Someones trying to censor but I wonder who exactly:

Why can’t I view some member’s profile pages?

If your Yahoo! ID is based in Singapore, Hong Kong, Germany, India or Korea, due to your local Terms of Service, only “safe” or “safe” + “moderate” content is visible to you. This applies to people's profiles too.

If you see the “This profile is unavailable to you” message, it means that you’re attempting to view an account that has been flagged as "moderate" or "restricted."

I wonder whose 'Terms of Service' that is they're talking about (Yahoo, Flickr, is it government regulated, ?) - seems pretty extreme to me.

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: XYplorer Lifetime License 51% discount on BitsDuJour
« Last post by tomos on November 01, 2010, 03:46 PM »
Well I'm happy to hear the XYplorer name is also being kept
I thought the criteria list for the new name was good:

MUST
- The name must be easily pronouncable for most people on this planet.
- When you see the name you must know how it is pronounced.
- When you hear the name you must have a good idea about how it is written/spelled.
- It should be catchy and memorable, without sounding like the name of a virus.
- The name must not be used already by any other well-known software.
- The name must not be a registered trademark like "explorer".
- The domain http://www.(name).com must be available.

NICE TO HAVE (but not essential)
- The name should have some connection to file management (fantasy allowed)
- If the name contains the sequence -xy- then I don't have to remake the icons.

I guess in many non-english languages, the letters XY dont exactly roll of the tongue (even when spoken as letters)

Well,
I had a better look at SmugMug and it is very nice.

I'm uploading minimum three pics per day on Flickr at the moment, as a sort of self-learning kind of thing. If I actually continue to do this, I'd consider getting a paid account...

Makes it pretty much impossible to use outside in sunshine, but it's a nice crisp display when used inside. YMMV.

 Being that one of the items on my to-do list is to spec a new laptop for a client that frequently works outside (in sunshine) ... What exactly are "we" calling a "Glare-Type Display"?

I'm not sure...  I guess 'reflective'
The Thinkpad listed wouldnt be a good enough screen really ( even though it is matt - better than many, but not really bright enough for sunshine - from what I read)

Yeah,
I was a bit suprised that this has a 16:9 format for a supposedly 'Office' laptop :D

Bildformat 16:9
Auflösung 1366 x 768 Pixel

The license will also stay valid for The-App-Formerly-Known-As-XYplorer.

wow,

thanks for the comments :)

Tomos: what's the machine going to be used for?

nothing much - I mean some office type work, ordering stuff on the net. *Maybe* something like InfoQube to try keep track of things.

That's why I thought get the one with more memory - as it's shared, there should be enough to go around then.
I've seen Windows 7 with 2GB memory and it's a lot slower than I'm used to with XP and 2GB ram, but then that could have been cause of a crappy CPU and absence of graphics card too :-\

There is a version of this machine with a 256MB graphics card for about 550, but according to reviews that's a bit noisy then...
(They probably would stretch the budget if I said it was important/worthwhile.)

It's not supposed to be that great a laptop - it's pretty low on the Thinkpad scale, and I know they havent so good a rep any more, but who does these days - especially for under 500 euro? (keep in mind hardware is a lot more expensive in Europe than in the States)
For that price I havent found anything better...

Here's a summary of reviews

I would have thought the extra memory would be more important cause of the shared video memory (?)

Living Room / Laptop choice: better CPU or more RAM ?
« Last post by tomos on October 27, 2010, 04:52 PM »
I'm researching a laptop on a budget - for somewhere I work a couple of hours a week - they have *no* computer - why do all my aquaintances and friends have to be complete technophobes...
That's why I ended up here I guess :-*

Aiming for a Thinkpad, but there's multiple versions (as usual). Graphic memory is shared on both.

Version #1 [Less CPU | More of everything else] Versus Version #2 [More CPU | Less of everything else]

Graphik on *both* / Intel GMA 4500MHD Grafik. Shared VRAM
Version # 1  (€479)Version # 2 (€499)
CPUIntel Pentium T4500 Prozessor (Dual-Core) (2,3 GHz, 1 MB Cache, 800 MHz FSB)Intel Core 2 Duo T6570 Prozessor (Dual-Core) (2,1 GHz, 2 MB Cache, 800 MHz FSB)
Memory4 GB DDR3-1066 SO-DIMM2 GB DDR3-1066 SO-DIMM
HD320GB250GB
USB x 4 x 3
Card readerYesNo

So, the one with the better CPU is €20 more expensive in spite of having less
  • memory
  • HD
  • Card reader
  • usb ports

Do you think the extra CPU power is that important ???
or is this just weird pricing ?

Sorry/ forgot to say: both have Win 7 HomePremium

Looks interesting - especially unlimited online backup for $54 a year

I find the pro pricing confusing:
http://b3.crashplan....m/business/store.vtl

They offer "1 year Individual Unlimited" for $54, but is that for the software - or is the software only sold in 5 packs ($438) ?

N.A.N.Y. 2011 / Re: NANY 2011 Teaser: Auspex - a Windows Productivity App
« Last post by tomos on October 26, 2010, 03:34 AM »
hmmm
it doesnt seem to work with GridMove, no matter which setting I choose under exception...
I only use the keyboard shortcuts for Gridmove - Win+G shows grid, then number key selects 'area'
With Auspex running, and Grdimove in 'Block' / 'Compatability Mode' or 'Allow' mode, the Win+G combo doesnt work (the grid shows, but the start menu pops up and takes focus so I cant resize window).
Oddly it works okay with the Auspex window (no matter which setting in Exceptions), but doesnt work with any other windows.

Again, this is simply after a clean 'install' of current version

XP SP3

I've looked at many - SmugMug is the best IMO. FWIW, I have accounts at SmugMug (Power), Flickr (Pro), PicasaWeb (Free), Photobucket (Pro).

what made you choose the 'Power' plan over the Basic one Jim?
