;D I asked, and you answered. Wow! This is going to take me some time to digest. Thanks a lot for the answer! And please, everyone else, forgive me for cluttering the thread; I will not ask any more questions out of context  :-[

Am I correct in thinking you're showing the tab bar in Opera but not in the others ??  :tellme:
No no, I wouldn't be that unfair. Forgive me for not making it clear the first time - and for hijacking this thread  :-[

Great thread.  Here are my fav's:

...
Opera (so fast and powerful, I love it)
...

I won't question that Opera is fast, its just that I've been testing it for a couple of weeks now, and I cannot see that it should be any faster than Internet Explorer 6, just as fast, but not faster, but it is of course faster than Firefox, which wrongly is being promoted as faster than IE.

But you must be the right guy to tell how to make the UI toolbar smaller:tellme:

10.png11.png12.png

I do like my toolbars to be as small as possible, but I've not been able to understand how this can be done in Opera. But maybe this question should be asked somewhere else.

Yes, I can use a hot key there, thanks to my favourite macro software.

Ohh, there is always something to learn, isn't there; now I have to learn macros!
- a problem being that I can only remember a very few hotkeys..  :-[

Flashnote by Softvoile Company

Forgive me, brothers, for repeating it again, but I've really grown very attached to the free Flashnote, and think y'all should check it out.

I think Flashnote is the fastest app I've ever tried (yes: fast like a flash...) and with no need to save - when it is written, it is saved!

Softvoile has most kindly made a screenshot for Donationcoder.forum:

: long ago I set up a folder of the icons that I use, so it's always just one source for me...on a hot key.
-cranioscopical (February 08, 2007, 12:02 PM)

I am an "IT-analphabetic", so your words confused me. When you decide to change an icon, and don't wanna use one from the FolderExt.dll or Shell32.dll, but are to browse, how can a hotkey help you then? You can't use a hotkey inside the search-box 'Select Icon File', can you?? Thanks to Explorer I have 4000 icons on the left side of my screen, but that doesn't help me, I think, when I have to browse and 'Select Icon File'.

Looks like the style sheet isn't being used....

It doesn't look like that to me, using Firefox.  Disabling scripting sometimes has that sort of effect, though.  Have you got it disabled?

No, scripting is enabled. But I've found the sinner to be Add N Edit Cookies 0.2.1.1, so I've removed it - and now DC is looking as it supposed to

When I visit DC, using Internet Explorer 6, the pages will look nice and orderly, as I would expect them to. But when I use Firefox 2 the pages are ugly to look at!

Is it just some new extension of mine, or is it your set-up?

Curt: Customize Folder Shell Extension 1.3.14

I agree with you about its appeal.  Been using it for years.  I rely on different folder backgrounds to tell me if I've mistakenly opened the wrong folder  :-[
-cranioscopical (February 07, 2007, 07:58 PM)

(Customize Folder Shell Extension = CFSE) For long I would waiste a lot of time navigating from System32 (where CFSE have its DLL, next to Windows' Shell32 icon DLL) to the folder Icons, when I was looking for a new icon. One day I learned about soft and hard -linking. Today I have hardlinked five folders from Pictures > Icons, into System32, so the hole icon replacing process is really fast now.

Okay Curt, FlashNote is a great idea, and I like it better than sticky apps by far. It sells itself as rough copy, but it's rather 'exact' copy, retaining the formatting of a php file I dumped inside it. Thanks for sharing!

You're welcome!

---

I was almost forgetting my number one program; it is very old and have not been update since year 2002. I use it every time I install a program (= almost every day), or if I see a folder with an icon I don't like anymore: Right-click the folder, left-click 'Properties' > 'Customize' > 'Change Icon' - using Customize Folder Shell Extension 1.3.14   :-*

I think you have a similar, but downgraded feature in XP - I use Win2K.

Customize Folder is an operating system shell extension that adds an additional page to the properties of a folder or drive. This additional page provides some additional customizations above those provided by Microsoft.

General Software Discussion / Pay by instalments at Aha-Soft
« Last post by Curt on February 06, 2007, 10:14 AM »
I am not sure if this is new to Internet software purchasing, but it is new to me.

AHA-SOFT has just launched the option to pay by instalments. If the price is $50, you'll have to pay $5 per month in a year, $60, making it 20% of interest. Any bankier will tell you that 20% pro anno is a good investment (but not too expensive). If you'll like to pay in euro, €, their interest will grow, as Aha-Soft is offering 1 $ = 1 € - when in fact the same apps (here IconLover) are offered at normal instant payment for €40 = $50, and €50 = $60.

Regular IconLover price: $49.95 or 40.00 EUR.

Aha-Soft offers a new service: buy software in installments. You can
pay a small amount every month for a year and start using the software
today.

You can register our popular product IconLover at the official
Aha-Soft website for $5.00.

To do this, proceed to the order page
http://www.aha-soft....ver/down-payment.htm
-Aha-Soft

Well, if one are to buy an expensive program I can see the need for instalments. Otherwise...

General Software Discussion / Have an opinion on DefenseWall HIPPS??
« Last post by Curt on February 03, 2007, 02:44 PM »
I'm having a hard time figuring out what to think about SoftSphere's DefenseWall HIPS (Host Intrusion Prevention System), which will be 'Todays Offer' on Monday at Bits du Jour.

DefenseWall HIPS divides all applications into 'Trusted' and 'Untrusted' groups. Untrusted applications are launched with limited rights to modification of critical system parameters, and only in the virtual zone that is specially allocated for them, thus separating them from trusted applications. In the case of penetration by malicious software via one of the untrusted applications (web browsers etc), it cannot harm your system and may be closed with just one click!
-SoftSphere

Build-in untrusted applications list:
Internet Explorer, Outlook, Outlook Express, Opera, Mozilla, FireFox, SeaMonkey, AOL Explorer, Netscape, Maxthon, Avant, Slim browser, K-Meleon, NetCaptor, ICQ, ICQ Light, Yahoo IM, AOL IM, AIM PRO, Trillian, Google Talk, Miranda IM, QIP, mIRC, eMule, Azureus, BitComet, BitTorrent, Peer2Mail, BitTornado, LimeWire, StrongDC, uTorrent, The Bat!, Eudora, PocoMail, IncrediMail.
Have you tried or heard about this program, and have a say?
Normal price is $29 - will you recommend it at $10 > $20 ??

Back to the subject; a custom bar:

I've not tried it, but it seems it can do just a little more than what any Explorer can do... ??  :tellme:

I used http://www.softpedia...ry/DrvClonerXP.shtml
but could have used http://www.softpedia...ry/DrvImagerXP.shtml

DrvClonerXP copies a whole drive partition byte-for-byte, sector-by-sector, directly to another drive partition,
-SoftPedia

This "byte-for-byte, sector-by-sector" - is that the 'burned' disk?
- will one move every deleted file as well?
7418

virtual desktop support ... is built into XP. Like many other things, XP and Win32 fully support virtual desktops, its just not exposed as a feature in explorer -

Could you tell a lot more about this, MrCrispy?

General Software Discussion / Re: Stickies 6.0a released
« Last post by Curt on January 29, 2007, 02:43 PM »
Difficult to buy Stickies as it is totally free - and just gets better and better!!!

I haven't tried NoteZilla but it would have to do a heck of a lot more to justify $30 more than Stickies.
Quote: "NoteZilla .. would have to do a heck of a lot more to justify $30 more"
I'm not sure. Linux is fine and free, but I've chosen to pay for Windows anyway.
Many firewalls / anti virus / etc / etc are fine and free, but we bought other apps' instead, didn't we.

But I should have made myself clear:
At home I have Win2K, so at home I use Stickies, because NoteZilla is XP and Vista only.
I used to have NoteZilla's kid brother, Quick Notes Plus, and it sure is a fine app'. But one day I decided to swift to the new NoteZilla, only to realize it is XP/Vista only. I was so 'affronted' that I changed to Stickies, and found it to be better than Quick Notes Plus -

- but NoteZilla is even better, not "a heck of a lot more", just even better.
Their trial is free...  ;)

Do not buy before you have tried The Reference:
NoteZilla - it can do so much more!

- unfortunately NoteZilla is $30  :( - but worth it  :-*

XP & Vista only.

BTW, here's an interesting article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/136517
I had no idea that there could be files in the recycle bin that can't be deleted. I think i have a similar problem in one of my disks.

• Microsoft Windows 98 Standard Edition
• Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 Standard Edition
• Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4.0 Developer Edition

Perhaps your cluster-tables are not cleaned the right way.
Open a dosbox and type chkdsk c: /F (or the drive where you had the files) type Y(es) asks you to check the volume at a new system restart.
Then restart your computer and let chkdsk do its job.
After this the clusters should be free again. Otherwise the files have NOT been deleted (perhaps moved?)

I did so, but the results seemed to be okay - and nothing has changed.

I have searched the PC and cannot find any folders this big.  :tellme:

General Software Discussion / 1.3 GB deleted, but not deleted, so where are they?
« Last post by Curt on January 27, 2007, 06:15 AM »
I was curious, and ran Photorec_win, in order to restore some files. But to my surprise it stopped after 15% and said I had no more free disk space - (I was not yet aware that Photorec must restore to another partition / disk only) - it had already restored 1.3 GB!! I inspected the restored files, and deleted the lot, but Win2K ran out of air and somehow didn't perform the delete process the right way, because even though the 1.3 GB has been removed from the folder and from the bin, they are still 'somewhere' around, and is strangeling my PC, because I have no free  space left.

Any idea as to where these 1.3 GB might be, and how to delete them (again)??

I somehow doubt it if installing SP3 involves the extra hardware required to run Vista fully without even consider any applications!

MS have also cynically postponed XP SP3 to 2008 (after Vista SP1 is due) to try and convince people to upgrade ...

Of course I was unfair and distorted the situation, but was I far out? I don't think so - to my experience Bill Gates / Microsoft has a lot less room than other people / companies, before we spank...

2008 is a long time to wait for XP SP 3 - if ever... Do you remember (because I don't): When XP was launched; did Win2K ever receive any new features, or were it security updates only? To my memory it was security only, and I don't expect XP to be handled any different - and so there'll really be no reason for waiting for XP SP 3, will there?

Anyway, I'll not buy Vista until Agnitum says it is okay
- and so far they're saying No.
