Well, if we're going to convince software sites to add new categories, we might as well aim high - and I support that category along with the banner. Which was not made from the blood of innocent puppies by the way, nude-one :)

Yep, it's a bit too heavy to dance with imho, and I sorta feel more comfortable write LaTeX stuff with notepad++. It's just so kludgy dealing with images and a couple of other things >_<.

What shell are you using, Edvard?

Cute trick, I wonder if all Windows versions does this kind of interpolation when stretchblt'ing :)

Curt, is it so bad not having a localized version of your internet browser? IMHO if you want the IE engine, you should be using Maxthon or Avant, at least they block some of the bad things, have tabbed browsing without requiring IE7, etc.

It's still way early, but I haven't found a tweaking program that works yet  >:(
I wonder how many of the old tweaks that actually still work under Vista... you might want to try either disabling UAC, or running a tweaking program with elevated privileges. After all, IE and explorer probably use a lot of the same old settings.

*shrug* - I still don't see the problem in labeling the software as donationware, imho it fits quite fine. If it was possible to lobby the major download sites into adding more categories, fine, but it probably isn't - and so I still think 'freeware' is the correct label there.

Unless I remember wrong, it's not like you need the license anyway, if you can live with a single nag every time you start the program. Not that big a deal, imho, if you're for some reason unwilling to do the tiny amount of work it takes to register.

Oh well, at least you're being reasonable, not like those alt.comp.freeware nitpicking zealots :p

edyshor: it's an exaggeration indeed :)

I dunno if I'd call mouser's applications "freeware", but they are free. And if some rigid software site only allows you "freeware, shareware, commercial demo" classifications, well, I think freeware is the one that fits best.

You almost make it sound as if DC is some sort of scam - which it certainly isn't. Otherwise mouser surely has a lot of people fooled :p

As for carrying around on an USB stick, well, if the apps don't already support it, I'm sure mouser wouldn't mind updating the apps so they can read the license file from the application folder - should be a pretty minor fix.

I must say that I don't really understand what the fuzz is about.

You can get the software for free, as in gratis. Yes, you need to put in a minimal amount of effort to do this, but there's no banner ads, and you're only going to see, what, three nags in your lifetime? Imho complaining about this is slightly arrogant, but okay - people are lazy these days :)

I think the way donationcoder.com is a lot more honest than those "freeware" apps that come bundled with adware (or "just" yahoo/google/whatever toolbar). And it's not like there's over-zealous nagging or functionality limitation. And I don't like the word "business model", it's more about the community chipping in a bit to keep the idea alive - not to mention covering the costs of running a reliable, high-speed dedicated server.

Hm, I'm pretty sceptical wrt. this, but I guess it's worth a shot. I might end up missing my single cyan friend if it works, though :)

EDIT: meh, only seems to work on the primary monitor.

Ah, how unfortunate - but not surprising for a shared host (hell, not surprising for any kind of non-dedicated server).

I'd be surprised if there isn't some free tool that does recursive scanning, though.

Some ftp servers have more advanced features through the "SITE" command, which might be able to do what you want. Failing that, a lot of servers support a "recursive ls listing" (which makes this job a lot easier), but it is unfortunately turned off on a lot of servers, since it can be used for DOS attack.

So, before looking further for an app to do this, I'd check if your server supports one of these methods.

UrlSnooper / Re: Does the software contain virus PECompact?
« Last post by f0dder on March 17, 2007, 09:55 AM »
When I tried Kaspersky 6.0 a few weeks ago, all of my installed DC programs got deleted initially because of this 'PECompact' false positive. After updating the virus definition, Kaspersky allowed these apps to run happily ever after. ;D
Deleted? Gosh, you need to turn down the paranoia level a bit and just block access :)

UrlSnooper / Re: Does the software contain virus PECompact?

PECompact is an executable compressor that reduces file size of programs. It's not a virus, but kaspersky detects things that aren't viruses... too bad it doesn't make it clear what exactly it's detecting. I wonder if it does this for UPX and other compressors as well?

PECompact is from http://www.bitsum.com , and written by Jeremy Collake who is a member here as well.

SP1 for the  IDE does take awhile to install, but it makes a lot of changes to the IDE (fixes a lot of annoying problems reported by users of VC#05 as they tested the beta).

And again, some googling will show you how to tremendously speed this up.

Note: there's a lot of color banding because I saved in 256-color mode, jpeg version wasn't much prettier at the same filesize. App looks a lot better in real life :)

Hm, I actually have some vague recollection of connecting two PCs via firewire and getting decent transfer speeds (at relatively high CPU usage though), but can't remember how exactly it worked - it's some years ago, and I only did it once.

General Software Discussion / Re: Tools for Password Protecting Files?
« Last post by f0dder on March 15, 2007, 07:54 AM »
The issue about leaving plaintext "residue" on your hard drive is really only of importance to a small subset of the people encrypting files (those who need to be absolutely certain that there is no trace of the original file left on their original pc).
-mouser
Think USB flashdrives...

And if you leave residue, you're almost at the point where you might as well not encrypt at all (false sense of security being worse than no security) - unless, of course, you use file wiping, but that's just extra hassle.

Don't get me wrong though, AxCrypt is probably just fine for getting a file from person A to person B securely. What I'm warning against is thinking that a decrypt->modify/use->encrypt scheme is safe on an usb drive (or even your local harddrive).

Hrm, dsCrypt uses BuzzWords® and makes pretty impossible claims ("immunity to keylogger-infested environments"). And things like "exceptional resistance to brute-force password search"? If somebody really wants to get at your data, they won't be hammering a GUI, they'll be working directly.

I wouldn't touch this :)

Living Room / Re: cost of running a pc (in the UK)?
« Last post by f0dder on March 14, 2007, 06:22 PM »
I know that moving from a decent 19" 85Hz CRT to a decent 17" 75Hz TFT (which was decent back then, but probably boo-bah by now) was a great move - less headaches, less sore eyes. At work they also replaced all CRTs with TFTs, probably partially because of electricity costs of 60+ monitors, but also because of the eyestrain.

The TFTs of the early days were horrible yeah, but the ones today are really great. There's a disadvantage, though: now even 85Hz CRTs seem to flicker because I've gotten used to the rock-stable TFT images.

pc->pc firewire should be possible, but I'd do a little research before just plugging in a cable - iirc the voltages are pretty high, so you might damage something. There were a few glitches with the first pc->pc usb cables, and those don't push as much juice as firewire afaik.
