The labeling is in Korean as well,

Oh...right...I should have noticed that immediately.  ;D

You're just lucky that I've not had time to install Korean on the new system yet or you'd get a browser full of 64pt, red, bold Korean cursing that I would never let slip from my lips~! :D :P

Thanks for the heads-up.

Master Commander looked interesting.

As of yet, I've not tried a file manager that doesn't slow down in the same way that Windows Explorer does. That's what I want. Fast. Very fast. I get tired of waiting for Windows Explorer. Though it's a lot better now with an SSD drive.

Check out The Top Ten Weird and Bizarre Japanese Soft Drinks

#8 there is the one I posted above -- it's Korean, not Japanese. The labeling is in Korean as well, which is odd if they found it in Japan, unless they got it in an international section at the market or something like that.

Pus or pis?

I put that in "The Soju Garden" a while back. It's still on the market. Has been forever.

But "pis"?

I had a BSOD video problem that I tracked down to drivers. It came down to having a second monitor plugged in. At the time I checked, the issue was several years old and still not fixed. (x64 systems only) The only solution was to not plug in a second monitor.

If the issue is anything like that...

Not sure if that helps or not.

I've been with The Planet for years, and with SoftLayer and The Planet since they merged.

The number of real problems I have had total exactly zero.

However, I am in the Texas data centers. Maybe that makes a difference.

Haha, they should make the rest of the bible (and the Qur'an!) that way :D

That was excellent~!

That is bizarre. Don't they have redundant power? Was it a blackout? Brownout?

I host with Softlayer in Texas. They've been excellent.

I'm guessing that you mean this one:

http://www.newegg.co...22-136-514-_-Product

If you can't bypass the restocking fee... At $80, I can't see it being worth it to return it. Assume about $10 in shipping to get it back, and then $12 restocking... $22 is almost 30% of the price of the drive. Ouch!

I'd write it off as a learning experience and buy a cheap external USB case for it.

Then again, you could look at it as losing $22 to get back $58 and call that a $22 learning experience rather than an $80 learning experience.

Cool. I noticed that they're working on a (coming soon) basic version ... Any chance it'll be free?

Hmmm... I'm wondering what I can and cannot say... So let me speak in generic terms instead and leave it for you to divine the meaning. (Sorry, but I believe that I'm still under NDA for some things -- not sure, so I'll err on the side of caution. It's easier than checking.)

They're using 2 different AV engines. i.e. They license them. Those companies can create conditions for the use of the engines, so you can imagine different clauses that could include non-competition for certain market segments, pricing, royalties, up front fees, and market segmentation. ESTsoft has to abide by their licensing agreement, so if there are royalties or market sector stipulations, that could prevent them from offering a free version.

I don't think that clears things up, but it at least puts forth a set of typical possibilities that you find in software licensing at that level.

Just to be clear -- those things that I mentioned above are typical restrictions that you find in software licenses. Nothing in there is specific to ESTsoft or the AV engine companies. I just put them out there as examples of things that could restrict ESTsoft's ability to make ALYac free.

Infrared? (hehehe) I can just see it now... Like most of Apple's "security" it'll get "CracKed" by a 12 year old child with a 10 cent piece of plastic (that just so happens to filter out that spectrum) in a week.

Christ, my dog walks in front of the cable box and the remote takes a shit ... We're not talking about a reliable technology here.

While it may not be reliable, it's the thought that counts. ;)

And that thought would somewhere along the lines of "thought police".  >:(

Yep. Using ALYac on my Android.

ALYac? Never heard of it ... How's it do on a PC?

Its' from ESTsoft -- the same people that make ALZip and ALTools. (I used to work for them.)

The basic premise for ALTools is to be fast and easy to use. Development efforts focus there (a lot goes into performance). They don't offer massively advanced features that you'll likely never use. However, they do have pretty much everything you will use, with the added advantage of that functionality being stupidly simple to use. e.g. Compare ALZip to the "file manager" style of compression utility -- ALZip is FAR easier to use.

ALYac uses 2 AV engines and is very fast. I'll leave it to you to decide how it does. It is free in Korea, but I think the international versions are paid with a trial. ($25.99)

http://global.alyac....m/home/security.aspx

One nice thing they have is their own "false positive" system, so they can avoid those annoyances.

I really believe that they have the right idea for 99% of people. Make stuff easy, but keep the power.

They have 50% of the Korean AV market now, and they just launched ALYac before I left ESTsoft. So, it's not been very long. They even managed to kill off Naver's attempts to get into the AV market. That's no small feat if you know the Korean market.

Living Room / Will Apple Tell You What You Can/Can't Take Pictures of?

Well, looks like Apple is innovating in the area of control yet once again:

http://www.patentlya...for-ios-cameras.html

On June 2, 2011, the US Patent & Trademark Office published a patent application from Apple that revealed various concepts behind a newly advanced next generation camera system that could employ infrared technology. On one side, the new system would go a long way in assisting the music and movie industries by automatically disabling camera functions when trying to photograph or film a movie or concert. On the other hand, the new system could turn your iOS device into a kind of automated tour guide for museums or cityscapes as well as eventually being an auto retail clerk providing customers with price, availability and product information. The technology behind Apple's patent application holds a lot of potential.

Huh? The quality is so low that's it's ridiculous. The only realistic use is to take pictures of you/friends at a concert, etc.

Is it really up to Apple to police what you can or can't take pictures of? What next?

I can see this going way too far. Here's an example...

You've just finished changing the baby's diapers and giving it a bath. ("it" as in the Germanic grammatical usage which does not distinguish sex or gender for infants.)

The baby is cutely playing with a bath toy, so you pick up your phone and take a picture.

30 minutes later the police are at your door arresting you for child pornography, thanks to Apple deciding that it should be policing everything you do.

Who doesn't have a picture of themselves (or whose parents don't) naked as an infant? There's nothing nefarious about it. Babies are cute. People take pictures of them. Bathing and whatnot is a part of what you do as a parent. Of course you see your child naked. This isn't abnormal.

But I can very well see that being the direction technology takes if companies like Apple try to seize control of what you can and cannot do.

This is NOT a good path to go down.

A small storage device that has the OS and everything on it and plugs into generic hardware / terminals? It could be the size of a credit card with today's technology. But it doesn't excite me much.

Tablets have a nice form factor. They're portable. You can hold them in 1 hand. They're light. They're usable, unlike the candy bar form factor. A slide-out/detachable Bluetooth keyboard with a built in track pad would make it a real laptop replacement (basically).

Wireless electricity would make it just about perfect. (It's still being researched.)

I can't get very excited about anything in the candy bar form factor. It's unusable. I can't even play games on my phone because they're designed for the fingers of 10-year old girls. Typing is even worse. For very simple things, sure -- they work ok. But to do work? Nope. Tablets could fill that space.

If computers were the size of mobile phones, or rather, if mobile phones were as powerful as desktop PCs, with a docking station port, it would be awesome! Imagine all the places that would most likely provide keyboard, video (monitor), mouse, and internet. You could have your PC anywhere you wanted, no need for cloud.

RUN! Run NOW! Grab a gun or knife and all the cash you can. Cut up your credit cards!

The cloud zealots are already en route to you right now! Your heresy will not be tolerated by them!

RUN~!

I would love to have a tablet that has the power of a desktop. With ports for external monitors (4), a keyboard, mouse, printer, speakers, etc.

I think that will happen relatively soon. Give it a few years. Manufacturers will realize that in addition to cute icons, people want productivity and portability. Laptops are marginally portable. Tablets are very portable.

I just about died when I read this title:

Microsoft becoming Apple with Windows 8 control freakery?

http://www.theregist...2/tablets_go_closed/

But my panic was short lived:

Microsoft is becoming more like Apple by bringing some hardware discipline to Windows 8 tablets, to the annoyance of OEMs who've had decades of freedom.

That's probably a good thing.

Living Room / Re: Microsoft unveils new UI prototype - Windows 8?

I wouldn't worry about it. My guess is that Microsoft is already working with some select hardware vendors to come up with solutions that will address all the UI/input device concerns.

It's not the input devices that concern me. You see, the 'T' in T-Clock, stands for Tray. As in SystemTray. So... If there is no TaskBar, There is also no SystemTray. Hence the project (that I've been working on for a decade) would be dead.

Like I said... Don't worry. Microsoft has always been in the business of helping developers. Now, if it were Apple, you could expect a big fat c**k in your a** real fast.

MS has always been about backward compatibilty. F**king people is Apple's Job.
