I played it a few days ago with a couple other people. Wanted to love it, thought I would love it.  Left me a little flat.
I liked the story elements but it dragged on a bit and didn't seem like there were two many interesting choices.
I'll probably give it away to someone on DC who wants to try it.

See this thread for more good youtube board game channels.

If you commit to always using one of those heavy duty file managers you mention, they may have their own way of leaving notes or tagging files that will display them differently within that program.

Sure that will work too.  If you ever decide you want to use FARR to search other places (like the start menu), you might refer back to this thread for the easiest way to do so.

This is exactly what Screenshot Captor was designed for.

As Tomos says, you just have to go to the options (via tray, quick capture bar, on main options dialog on Interface tab) and tell it to stay minimized after capture.
Then SC will do what it always does, automatically save and name image files.
You can also customize how image files are named if you prefer something other than the default naming scheme of using the current date and time.

is there a way to prevent the folders from showing up in the search,so just the .dll's show?

add -\ to the search bar.

you could make a custom hotkey that started your search with "+vst -\ " as I was describing before, HOWEVER in this case the best thing would probably be to create a new regex alias that used the "dosearch" command to do this behind the scenes.

so here's what your alias would look like:
Screenshot - 8_21_2014 , 9_57_14 AM.png
this regex alias will trigger any time you type "v something" and act as if you typed "+vst -\ something"

and here's what your search folder entry would look like:
Screenshot - 8_21_2014 , 9_58_12 AM.png

and here's what an optional custom hotkey would look like that brings up FARR with the "v " already in the search box:

Martin Brinkmann, at the excellent ghacks, has a nice comparison of keyword-powered launchers for windows, and I'm proud to say that my own Find and Run Robot (FARR) gets the recommendation in the end.

The main idea behind application launchers is to speed up that process. Ideally, all you have to do is enter what you are looking for in the program's interface to load it right from there.

Most launcher apps come with shortcuts that you can press or active to display the frontend on the screen to start issuing your commands.

While most launchers support the basic operations listed above, it is extra features that distinguish them mostly. Some may support web searches for example or to run Windows commands to quickly shutdown the PC.

...While that is the case, it is Find and Run Robot that gets my seal of approval.

My Find and Run Robot (FARR) tool is perfectly suited for this kind of thing.

You would add a search folder entry pointing to your vstplugins folder(s), specifying that it should only display .dll files, and add a keyword like "vst".

Then to search for a dll in that folder containing "sam" you would hit the hotkey to bring up FARR, and then type "+vst sam" and it would instantly show you all matching dll files with sam in their name.
You could also create a custom hotkey so that as soon as you press it, it would launch FARR with the "+vst " part pre-filled in, showing all vst .dlls and waiting for you to type more to filter.

LaunchBar Commander / Re: Error building treeicons
« Last post by mouser on August 21, 2014, 06:23 AM »
After a restart of LBC, I of course dragged over 4 file links with no problem.  The overall problem seems to be that adding 10 or 12 things at a time drives it nuts.

ugh that is so frustrating..

Side note: tell you what would be a lot less frustration, when I add an item, be it menu or new command, it would be really nice of the "new command" or "new menu" was selected
The new item should be selected in the tree.. do you mean you want the text box where you can type the name to be preselected so you can just type the new name?
7316
I'm thinking that maybe a solution to this is for me to try to detect when a CHILD window is in front of it's parent window, and in those cases, not try to do the transparency capture.

Rich,

I'm sorry for the error - that sounds frustrating.
Can you reproduce the problem every time by dragging those links into LBC?
If so, I'd like to send you a version of LBC to test (or ask you to send me the file that causes the error when dragged onto LBC).

Or we may simply be dealing with the standard overypaying of academic/government contracts, where a product that would cost a normal human $200 somehow costs a government office $2000.

Living Room / Nextdoor: The anti-facebook social network for neighborhoods
« Last post by mouser on August 20, 2014, 10:24 AM »
Nextdoor is a social network designed to stay local within a neighborhood.  I don't think the claims of how many "neighborhoods" are using it mean much, but I do love to see when people explore alternative spaces -- and especially when they take a concept and look for ways to invert it.

Nextdoor is a odd outlier among today’s social networks. Signing up is an onerous process, requiring substantial proof of both your identification and address. People post messages, but they are seen only by others in the immediate area, and there is no share or retweet button to proliferate messages across the network. It feels more like a modern update on a message board or web forum than a social network. But it has struck a chord across the country.

+1 for what App's post.
Use this laptop as a lesson to teach your kids that "free gifts" are to be treated with a healthy dose of suspicion, and with your guard up.

And in all fairness, some credit has to be given to the school for finding a way to get a laptop in the hands of every kid to assist with school work -- though it would be much better if they let each parent decide whether they wanted the kids to be able to install what they want but take responsibility for maintenance, or leave it as is and have the school do it.  And I'm guessing the signed legal stuff about no privacy rights may be as much about school officials wanting to protect their ass in worst-case scenario, rather than real expectations of spying on kids, but you never know.

Hopefully the school will have an option of providing just the 3rd party commercial software needed for schoolwork (assuming there is any) to kids who have their own laptops.

It does make you wonder how long until some clever kid at that school starts offering a service to:
1. Make a drive image backup of the laptop when it is newly delivered.
2. Wipe the OS clean and installs a new operating system free of any lockdown or monitoring software.
3. Install the original image as a virtual machine if there is any needed non-free software on it.
4. Restore image when it's time to hand it back

« Last post by mouser on August 18, 2014, 06:18 PM »
Fair enough -- whether copy-to-clipboard is a 1 or 2 step process depends partly on where you trigger it from.
Are you meaning the button on the toolbar in the main window, or the right-click menu in tray menu?

If it's the main toolbar menu, then i can easily add an option to bring back the one click action.
