Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: Rename files with incremental timestamp
« Last post by brotherS on October 24, 2006, 05:54 AM »
I would like the file names' time and date stamps to be re-written so
that each are 1 minute older than the previous alphabetically named one
Wow... I never saw a program that can do it, but I really wonder why you want to do this!

Please enlighten me :)

Living Room / Re: Citizendium - Wikipedia with More Expert/Editor Control
« Last post by brotherS on October 23, 2006, 03:20 PM »
From official announcement (http://citizendium.org/):
We believe a fork is necessary, and justified, both to allow regular people a place to work under the direction of experts, and in which personal accountability--including the use of real names--is expected.  In short, we want to create a responsible community and a good global citizen.
I like the more 'anarchist' approach of Wikipedia. From the article you linked:

That said, I am troubled by some aspects of Sanger's Citizendium. Aside from its pretentious title (which participants are already saying must be changed), this feels in some ways like an attempt by old-guard academics to retake control of humanity's knowledge. - Jason Sanford
Those were almost exactly my thoughts after I heard about Citizendium on the radio!

Two more great quotes from the article:
Basically what I think works in a wikis is to trust people to do the right thing, and trust them as much as you can possibly stand it, until it hurts your head and makes you scared for what they're going to break. Because that is what works. - Jimmy Wales

My belief is that Wikipedia's success dramatizes instead a change in the nature of authority, moving from trust inhering in guarantees offered by institutions to probabilities created by processes. - Clay Shirky

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Locate 3.0 - great *FAST* HD search tool!
« Last post by brotherS on October 23, 2006, 03:08 PM »
i'd like to make a suggestion, if i may be so bold, for improving 'Locate'...

if the real time system monitoring was implemented (like in 'filetracer'), i'd also like to see something similar to the way 'find and run robot' displays the search results, i.e. real time sorting/displaying of the results as you type.
Since real time system monitoring is slowing your system down by default (even if only a bit), I doubt it will be added to Locate. I don't miss that btw, I only rarely need to update my Locate databases manually between the scheduled intervals.

A 'display results as you type' feature though might come in real handy at times, could maybe be added as an alternative to how it works now.

I haven't bothered to read any reviews before I take the time-out to write this one. Forgive me if this review of mine is unorthodox.
Hi! It sure would help if you read the 3 'pinned' posts in https://www.donation...index.php?board=42.0 and then edit your review after doing so.

You don't have to stick to the standard 100% but it sure would be nice to have some more info:
- what does it do? (copy this info from the author or some review site)
- for which OS?
- free or not?
- screenshots?
- how is it rated on other sites?
- etc.

Thanks :)

I've used alot of hard drive file finding programs, and spent days looking for one several years ago.  The one that I found that did most of what I want is FileTracer.  It's not perfect, and it's not free, but it works great.  It works in real-time and I've never noticed a system slowdown because of it.
If you like it so much, please consider to write a mini-review about it. If "works in real-time" means that it doesn't index files it's not really comparible to Locate, since you don't have the blazing speed then.

One of it's coolest features is the capability to work with "open file" and "save file" dialogs.  I can find any file on my system and paste it's path within seconds with FileTracer, no wasting time browsing to the file via the "open" dialog box.
I'm not sure I understand 100% what you mean, but Locate offers lots of stuff around 'making your life easier with files and paths' too.

I really only have one issue with it ... if you add / remove external hard drives all the time and you reboot, it wants to re-index your hard drives.  However, if you press ignore it'll still work since it didn't delete the database.  One last thing, the developer is not very responsive, at least he hasn't been with me.
Hm... so you have to pay for FileTracer, there's a severe bug and the coder won't fix it? That's 3 more reasons why I love Locate! :D

I've evaluated Locate 3.0 (plus dozen of other programs) and I didn't like the way it work in comparison to FileTracer.
Please share what you missed in Locate, it just might be added! :)

oh, yes..

forget to say "another software" :)
bc I don't like collectorz..

And the other software here discussed is just for on-HD and I need to catalog thousands of cd/dvd with mp3s
This must be your blind week! :o :D

Let me quote myself for you:
A quick update: I like MediaMonkey even better now, it's great to archive old mp3 files on CD or DVD. Give the CD/DVD a unique name when burning (i.e. date when burned), let MediaMonkey add its content to the database and you are ready to search all your mp3 files (whether archived or still on your PC) in no time!

If you want to test it (it's free!) you'll find the URL two posts above.

D. Allen was using mind maps (instead of powerpoint), he seems to swear by them. Have you tried them? Any thoughts?
I have and it's a nice way to structure thoughts and ideas. I can't say that it changed my life, but I like it.

Check out FreeMind, a free and quite nice mind mapping program: http://freemind.sour.../index.php/Main_Page

try Pando.
http://www.pando.com/how_it_works explains how it works, should be good for when you often send files.

http://www.sendspace.com is a simple web-based solution. I need to send files > 1 MB only every 2 weeks or so, so that service is good (and easy) enough for me.
739
Now what would be perfect would be if you could add it to your contact list on msn/aim/yahoo/etc and just message it and it message you back your reminders at same screen name you used without the need to actually sign up.
Being able to add reminders by using AIM/ICQ/etc. sounds like a great idea!

Doing that without signing up probably wouldn't be so good:
- you can't micro-manage your reminders online then (changing due dates/times, texts, labels, ...)
- the server would need to accept everything from any IM address, probably making RTM (more) vulnerable to attacks

Thanks, I'd like to use that with my Firefox 1.5.0.6, but...

brotherS, make it compatible with Nightly Tester Tools..
I tried to... only to see that the Nightly Tester Tools extension requires at least FF 2.x!  >:(

And keyconfig is not compatible with Firefox 1.5.0.7 either... ARGH!!

I noticed using characters such as # ' = - is insanely easy. ~ @ +_ are with Shift, not too much trouble.

Prefixing special, important folder names with those gives you speedy access.

Of course there are hot keys to go to any folder anywhere, but this is more context sensitive, within a folder, or if you're in Explorer's Folders Pane and you have the whole tree open, you can jump between folders with these special characters. Expand everything in ROOT using * on the numpad:

ROOT\yad\da\yad\da\# wohoo

ROOT\yad\da\= boom, you're there

ROOT\bla\bla\bla\# wohoo part II

ROOT\stuff\stuff\stuff\stuff\= boom part II

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: View FULL txt file in tooltip
« Last post by brotherS on October 08, 2006, 02:09 PM »
The reason: No clicking involved. No opening, no closing. Just viewing. Just like PhotoMesa.

Example: I've a folder Text. I go and just hover there selecting files as I go, perhaps with a left click, which closes the tooltip and adds to the selection, acting as if I had Ctrl pressed.
So you still would have to click...  8)

Really, try Win32Pad (see above), you can close it by just pressing ESC. And if you have to open dozens of files just to check what they are about it's time to improve the file names you give. ;)

Please don't be so cryptic in your requests :(

I assume you are referring to the tool from http://www.contextmagic.com/ ?

I personally see no reason why you would want such a thing, but that's only me.
Why not just use a light-weight text editor like Win32Pad (http://fileforum.bet...Win32Pad/944076528/1) that's blazing fast?

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: Automatic File Move and Copy
« Last post by brotherS on October 08, 2006, 11:42 AM »
http://www.gdsoftwar...e=4&showapp=GAFT

The problem I have with this one is that it doesn't seem to have a recursive option. If you find it, please report. Very nice for automatically moving stuff around otherwise. A folder that cleans itself up can be done. Know any coding snacks or other software that deal with these auto move copy issues?
May I suggest that you visit http://www.autohotkey.com/ and http://www.autohotke...om/docs/Tutorial.htm ? It seems AHK (AutoHotkey) would be perfect for you too, you can do lots of (automated) file moving and copying with it! And you don't have to be a coder for it, it's simple if you are willing to spend a little bit of time.

and WinDirStat

http://windirstat.info/

You see stuff in WinDirStat format, color coded, and normal file lists appear when you zoom near enough. Multiple zoomable windows.
In WinDirStat you can already 'zoom' into folders until you are on the file level. I don't see a need for a new program here. Also, this would be anything BUT a coding *snack*! ;)

Post New Requests Here / DONE: ESC closes Windows Explorer (AHK)
« Last post by brotherS on October 08, 2006, 07:00 AM »
Hi!

I came up with this little script to easily close Windows Explorer windows:

#Persistent
$ESC::
  Send, {ESC}
If WinActive("ahk_class ExploreWClass")
  Send !{F4}
return

It works great, it just has one problem: you can't use ESC anymore to abort renaming of files, like when you accidentally deleted important parts of the file name and can't just press enter to "OK" the change.

So I need some way to 'only send Alt+F4 (!{F4}) if ESC is pressed twice within one second'. Got any ideas for a smart solution? I bet you do!

If what sri suggested is not enough, give Locate a try! I sometimes use it for similar purposes as you described, for example you can search for all *.exe files that are older than 3 days but not older than 10. And every search is completed within a blink of your eyes!

I use mIRC for IRC and Gaim for IM. How does Miranda compare to Gaim?
If you don't use massive scripting for IRC, try Miranda IRC! About Gaim: I know many who switched to Miranda, since Miranda is simply the best when you want to customize your IM experience to the max!
