Or how about this: can you set your preferred desktop indexer to index a group of websites?  You don't have to download the entire website, but index it.  Come to think of it, it's sounds like I need some kind of "spider" program.

Do you mind creating the groups separately from bookmarks?  i.e. sort of like that screenshot?  If it were made for every browser, it would be more extensive as they all store their bookmarks separately differently.

Can anyone recommend a software that will only search the pages that are bookmarked or favorited?  That is, not the entire web, but just a specified set of pages?

Like ClickHint, except a standalone software or works outside of a browser?

I was wondering if DTsearch can do it, but I'm not sure.

You want to search the current content of the page live?  Just trying to understand what you're looking for?

response to posting above
Now, it would seem to me obvious what such an intelligent poster had done above by quoting in stream of a topic that's not limited to that section a response from that section had done.  With that in mind, one would have to determine that this was calculated.  I tried above to ask in a nice manner that this be limited to the section that I had purposefully ignored- because people have opinions, and they have the right to voice them, just as others have the right to come to a board dedicated to software and not be assailed by those opinions, whether they agree or disagree with them.  But with that last quote brought from there to here (and the earlier links provided on said subject after it was asked), well, I do have to post this dissenting argument.

via Mirram-Webster
terrorism: The systematic use of terror especially as a means of coercion
police state: A totalitarian state controlled by a political secret police force.

Though there are acts that are beyond the pale as have been committed by elements in the government (which is not a body, by the way, but a group of individuals, notably, usually ungoverned), it is neither systematic, or totalitarian, nor controlled by a political secret police force.  So yes, I do take objection to the rather heavy handed use of those terms, and no, it's not obvious in the "it's dark at night", or "the sun is hot" manner.

My response above (and now) is in relation to the already off-topic comments posted in this thread, and still here, after the request was made.  Hopefully, this will end that.  If it's there, I'll neither see, nor reply, and be quite happy at the ignorance of the topic. I don't want to continue discussion, as I didn't want to discuss it originally, and that was all I was asking.  Thanks for moving it there.  :)

Everyone knows the US is a terrorist police state.
Maybe this should be taken to the soapbox?  I ignore it for a reason.  I might not believe in everything that the US does, and disagree with quite a bit.  But to stand by while such flamebait is posted?  A little too much to ask.  And I don't want to bring such things into the mainstream of DC- doesn't usually work out.
Good point. In the future, I'll try to start a topic in Soap Box and simply refer to that there. I know I can be extreme at times.
So, point taken. I'll try to keep it out of the Living Room.

I did not perceive what you said as being worthy of the label "flamebait".
"Dangerous anarchic rebellious speech", perhaps   ;D   -  but I certainly didn't suppose that you were intending to goad anyone to debate the point. On the contrary, it seems that you were just stating your POV.
Everyone - including you and @wraith808 - is entitled to their POV, no matter how wrong they may be.     ;)
And what you said didn't goad me or make me feel obliged to respond either. It was harmless.

Perhaps flamebait was too harsh of a word, but the complaint is still valid.  We have a soap box for a reason- for conversations of these types.  Is asking someone to take it there denying them of their ability to respond?  It was also not even tangential to the conversation, i.e. you had to go google to find those particular instances to 'support' your position.  If something isn't part of the conversation, and is brought up, and is likely to bait people... well, perhaps the designation wasn't too far off?  If we didn't have an area, I would have said something in response... or not.  But I used a third option as given by the forum and by my ignoring that area for this very reason because I come here for light conversation and discussion about software and things peripheral to that and coding, which the DOTCOM saga is a part of.  This particular tangent isn't that.

I had the same problem, and found out through my trials that there's not really anyway to stop them.  They put bogus reply addresses (in many cases, they use an account on your server) so that they can get past some spam checks that don't use something akin to the Sender Policy Frameworkw check to make sure it's actually from that domain.  It can also get your domain blacklisted.  This was several years ago that I had this problem, so I'm not sure if something better has come along in the meantime.

Fair do's to Google. At least when they introduced g+, though they seemed clearly to be aligning themselves as a Facebook competitor, they didn't make it (g+) compulsory - though they seemed to come pretty close to doing that.

Oh, I imagine that's in large part because of Buzz. :)
7234
From Gervase Markham's story:
The email instead goes to my Facebook inbox, and I don't get a notification email to say it's there.
So this is why Facebook introduced it: They want you to go to their site to check for email. They don't want to send the messages to your email and have you interact there, they don't want you to use a search engine to find content, and they don't want you to use forums and instant messages to talk to people. They don't want you ever to get the idea to leave the site.

Yup... that's what I meant/said earlier.

General Software Discussion / Dropbox alternative for those with FTP access
« Last post by wraith808 on June 27, 2012, 03:42 PM »
Of course, it doesn't have to be an alternative- I'm planning to try it side by side with my other syncing software (JungleDisk, Cubby, Dropbox, and SFFS).

FTPBox - File Syncing on your own Host

It's FOSS too!

It was discussed in this thread, but it appears more polished now, with a site and everything... and the source is available now on github and google code.

At least in my case I can toggle visibility of @facebook and my email
 (see attachment in previous post)
I don't think the largest issue is the ability to toggle visibility, but that facebook decided without consent to make it visible by default.
I still haven't understood why this is a problem. If you allowed messages from unknown people, the "send a message" button was there before and it accomplished the same objective. If you did not allow them (and still don't), as fenixproductions mentioned, emails from unknown sources get refused (much in the same way messages from unknown sources would).
If they made the personal emails available (the ones not from facebook), I would understand the problem, this way, I really don't.

You're looking at it purely from the intent of privacy concerns and personal uses.  Facebook, for better or worse, is used by non-businesses.  And some of them post their contact information to get in contact with them off of facebook.  If all of a sudden, business correspondence is going to facebook messaging rather than their e-mail address... that's a concern, at least as far as I see.

The other concern (even from a personal use) is transparency of action.  When google opted people in to buzz, did it really do anything terribly bad?  It was just that people got opted into a service that they didn't opt into.  Same thing goes here.

^ could it not be both (intentional content/message and other intrepertations)

Exactly. He meant what he meant, but people got other things out of it that he didn't.

I'm not denying that.  What I'm saying is that people say that *he* meant the story to be about censorship, not that *I interpret the content of his writing to have themes of censorship* or something similar.  The two are *very* different- one being quite logical, and the other being quite abhorrent to me.

This is really nothing in my opinion, no effect on anybody as far as I can tell. It's probably another step in their messaging system - ie facebook want everything to be facebook, even the part after @

Well, I believe it can be something to certain people.  If you actually publish your e-mail address and use it as a form of contact, then this does affect you.  Especially if it's a business or your primary link to family/friends.

So while Ray may not have intended it to be about censorship, that's not what a lot of people got from his book. Call it an unintended gift.

Well, IMO Ray wasn't wrong.  He wrote what he wrote, and meant what he meant.  If I write that I am blue, and you take it to mean that I'm sad, but I actually meant, I dressed up like a smurf, you are entitled to your interpretation.  However, by the same rights as the writer, my intent is not changed by your interpretation.

So people can get out of it whatever they want.  However, the writer's intent of the novel remains unchanged.  And when such classes as mentioned are formed, they are usually about the writer's intent, not your interpretation (though there are classes about that also).  And telling the author what his intent was in the face of his denial and correction is just rude in my opinion.
7242
Do you have to check it?  I mean the e-mail account.  As long as they don't forward to my personal account, I don't care.  It will just take up space on their servers. :)

Well, why doesn't someone ask him? Oh, wait...bugger.

Umm... that was the point of the article?  As in it had direct quotes?  And you can find other direct references to it if you search for it...

If indeed?  That was from an interview with the man himself, with direct quotes at times.  And, he had a point, truthfully.  And he did his part- he wasn't a Luddite.  He just had valid concerns that I think have materialized.  We live in a world obsessed with instant gratification at no cost in critical thinking or focus of purpose and thought.  Technology has undeniable benefits.  But with that benefit comes drawbacks and a deeper long term cost that I don't think is adequately addressed or readily apparent.

HE SAYS THE CULPRIT in Fahrenheit 451 is not the state — it is the people. Unlike Orwell’s 1984, in which the government uses television screens to indoctrinate citizens, Bradbury envisioned television as an opiate. In the book, Bradbury refers to televisions as “walls” and its actors as “family,” a truth evident to anyone who has heard a recap of network shows in which a fan refers to the characters by first name, as if they were relatives or friends.

Bread and circuses.

http://www.laweekly....-451-misinterpreted/

Bradbury, a man living in the creative and industrial center of reality TV and one-hour dramas, says it is, in fact, a story about how television destroys interest in reading literature.

“Television gives you the dates of Napoleon, but not who he was,” Bradbury says, summarizing TV’s content with a single word that he spits out as an epithet: “factoids.” He says this while sitting in a room dominated by a gigantic flat-panel television broadcasting the Fox News Channel, muted, factoids crawling across the bottom of the screen.

His fear in 1953 that television would kill books has, he says, been partially confirmed by television’s effect on substance in the news. The front page of that day’s L.A. Times reported on the weekend box-office receipts for the third in the Spider-Man series of movies, seeming to prove his point.

“Useless,” Bradbury says. “They stuff you with so much useless information, you feel full.” He bristles when others tell him what his stories mean, and once walked out of a class at UCLA where students insisted his book was about government censorship. He’s now bucking the widespread conventional wisdom with a video clip on his Web site (http://www.raybradbu...m/at_home_clips.html), titled “Bradbury on censorship/television.”

One point that I want to bring up... F451 wasn't about censorship, and Bradbury himself would get wroth when confronted with the fact that people thought it was about the same.

Things have changed a lot since 1975. And one of the most notable changes is that the former 'rebels' are now doing their damnedest to become our new overlords.

Ummm... Apple was doing the same thing back then, i.e. Franklin Ace, Laser, and other clones.  They did it again in the 90s.  This is just part for the course for them... they never were truly rebels.

MEGAcquire - An Enhanced Adventure Into High Finance

Goal$5,000 ($9,034 as of this posting)
End Date2012-06-20
Project Creator(s)Lloyd T. Solon
ExcerptMEGAcquire is an exciting journey of strategy and luck, for three to six players, through the corporate world. Live in the world of fun and fortune as you maneuver to outwit your opponents. Build and merge companies while shrewdly buying, trading, and selling stocks to become the wealthiest player.

Each player builds companies by adding tiles as they increase wealth by purchasing stocks in these companies. Cash flow is obtained by selling majority and minority shares through mergers. It is not always prudent to have the most stock in the biggest company, if you can build and sell enough smaller companies to generate a large income. Many different strategies can be used to reach the pinnacle of the corporate world, but you will always need the “luck of the draw”.

MEGAcquire will appeal to players of any age, who like the feeling of power that is acquired through achievement. It is recommended for ages 13 and up, but cannot be limited in age because of the early possession of business savvy that can be found in younger players. Average playing time is from 2-3 hours, but shorter time limits can be set.

More more information please visit: http://www.megacquire.com

  novacry.png
Goal$10,000 ($11,439 as of this posting)
End Date2012-06-21
Project Creator(s)Steven J. Lykowski
ExcerptNot just a space combat game, Nova Cry combines diplomacy, exploration, crew management, variable player powers, turn phases, intriguing combat choices, unique travel mechanics, and careful hand management all into one game that truly has an "epic boardgame" feel – all wrapped into a card game!

Taking cues from boardgames such as Twilight Imperium and Cosmic Encounter, Nova Cry lets players customize and tailor their gameplay experience so that each game highlights a new facet of the Nova Cry universe. Gameplay centers around the six cards that each player chooses as their beginning task force, consisting of one captain card (from 15), one ship card (from 15), three crew members (from 12), and one personal weapon (from 7). These six choices will remain with that player for the rest of the game and will greatly affect their strategic choices.
