Living Room / Re: Can we stop with the diagonal screen length thing?
« Last post by tomos on January 11, 2011, 03:08 AM »
I'm curious. Could you explain your complaints with 16:9? I believe my current monitor is 16:10, but I heard that is rare.

It does appear to be that 16:10 is becoming increasingly rare, which is another real annoyance.

Fact is with a 16:9 you get (what was it Andy..) roughly 10% less monitor. That's why 16:10 is getting harder to get - what the manufacturers offer with 16:9 has the same diagonal length, but they save around 10% on production costs ... ideal for them, innit?

Congratulation, Tom. This is quite exciting! :-)
I agree :D

I need to say that it made me feel uneasy when I saw my name spelled out in full, next to an enlarged copy of my facebook picture. Will it be possible to change these features, or Should/Must/Can I cancel my account?

Does anyone know what the norm is with Facebook logins - do they usually show the full name?
I have used FB to login places - but very little and cant remember how it worked..

Curt, this may help:
Initially I registered on the site, and gave the same name for user and full names (just "Tom") - after that, when loged in via Facebook, it just shows my registered name (Tom). I think this might be a workaround.

Apologies about that Curt -
I've already reported this to Adi but I think it got forgotten about (did by me anyways :-[) - we'll see what he says.
It's actually also a problem if you register - you have to fill in a user name and a "Full name" - but it's the full name that's shown on the home/list-page.

Go to the View menu, and choose "Flat View" - there are three options, so you'll need to find the one you like.

Dunno if this any help:

I think the flat views show a "Location" column by default which shows the path (if not, you can add columns as in Explorer)
If you sort by that, the files and folders will be grouped according to the path.

Actually, it occured to me after I went to bed that what they've done is take 5 pictures of the same boy in different positions and then composited them to remove him.

I completely missed that! -
they also composited them to make the "before" picture, which just adds to the confusion :)

For what it took me to hand-fix that image, would have taken me far longer using Content Aware, making sure my selection was precise, and then cleaning everything else up.

Stephen I think you missed this query (below) - I'm curious too :)

How did you do it? Clone & pixel adjust?

This is exactly what I'm talking about.

- Oshyan

I estimate the video has had at least 17 million views in total...

with apologies - veering off-topic here:

funny there was a comment with over 1500 votes - when I went back to quote it it was gone

Basically it said the original video on YT had 14 million view but it got taken down, and then it was shown on some tv channels (maybe sold by the creator?). Very critical of youtube, strange it disappeared. Hah, now the second highest voted comment (also complaining about youtube) is removed. The poster is not online according to his channel - looks to me like youtube is censoring the comments :tellme:

They've chosen a very poor example to use as a demo, one photo with people and then one without - why go to the trouble of doing a composite?

If they'd demonstrated by using 10 pictures of Piazzo San Marco, Venice, taken at 5 minute intervals from 10am on a sunny morning that they could remove all the tourists......now that would be impressive.

It's not clear what exactly they're doing (they dont give much details) - i- from the name, I would presume, as you do, that you need a few pics to work with.

with widescreen monitors, the height is very important.
Mine is 16:10, I already miss the height - if it were 16:9 I'd need another one on top...

If you wanted to search specific dictionaries then you may be able to cobble something together with a macro to open new tab, then use site:merriam-webster.com word or site:thefreedictionary.com sesquipedalian

The dictionaries I am talking about are software ones, not on-line.

Oh... I misunderstood too.  I was allowing to use the websites; I didn't realize they were software based.

Did someone do a NANY based on this idea? (using websites - I've lost track of the NANY entries...)

I like sharing things that I find entertaining  :P
I love em, true or no

In George Washington's days, there were no cameras. One's image was either sculpted or painted.  Some paintings of George Washington showed him standing behind a desk with one arm behind his back while others showed both legs and both arms.  Prices charged by painters were not based on how many people were to be painted, but by how many limbs were to be painted. Arms and legs are 'limbs,' therefore painting them would cost the buyer more.. Hence the expression, 'Okay, but it'll cost you an arm and a leg.'   (Artists know hands and arms are more difficult to paint)

^ That one reminds me of a story about the expression "chancing an arm" (to risk something)
two families had a feud. One eventually took refuge in St Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin. They then wished to make peace, but were afraid for their lives if they ventured out; in consequence they cut a hole in one of the Cathedral's doors and put out an arm - the worst that could have happened was that an arm was lost. The hole is present to this day.
unfortunately,
they end up by saying:
>> Sadly, the feud took place in 1492 and the saying is first recorded only in the 1880s

Very critical initially* (or should I say superficially? - critical of the writing & translation) but also a very interesting indepth analysis

Hmmm...  I'm glad I'm just a reader, not a critic!

Yeah, I didnt mean to post it to knock his books - it was the psychological stuff I found interesting.

There was another very entertaining post in a similar vein here a short while back (was that from you too kyrathaba?)

Yeah, these are great fun, but I wouldnt actually believe any without some sort of research ;-)

the only one I checked was gossip:

http://en.wikipedia....iki/Gossip#Etymology
The word is from Old English godsibb, from god and sibb, the term for godparents, i.e. a child's godfather or godmother. In the 16th century, the word assumed the meaning of a person, mostly a woman, one who delights in idle talk, a newsmonger, a tattler.[4] In the early 19th century, the term was extended from the talker to the conversation of such persons. The verb to gossip, meaning "to be a gossip", first appears in Shakespeare.

Just downloaded "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" to my Kindle!  OooOooOoohh, excited.

You won't be sorry - all three books left me wanting more (and hoping that Steig Larsson's estate gets sorted out soon so that whatever nuggets that remain unpublished WILL be published (from what I understand, there is one more book, about 80% finished, along with outlines for 6 more)!

EDIT/ I didnt mean to post this to knock his books - it was the psychological stuff I found interesting.

I find it hard to comment on the colours thing. While I realize I haven't spoken up till now, I'm not personally a fan of the light blue background your website has going as a theme, and the logos as they are aren't even set to that colour background, making it even harder to make a right decision.
True.
The whole thing happened so quickly that there wasnt much time to spend on design - well actually I spent a share of late nights in that role, but, the fact is - while I have some experience with layout - I'm not a designer...

I actually like the blue myself. I've gotten mixed responses from others about it.

On a white bg, the greish one looks best. The other two.. I don't know. The colours aren't all that bad, but I just don't like the chemistry the way I see it atm. Dropshadows are overdone imo and I'd recommend taking it out to look less cheap. :)

I'm happy with the design at any rate - there is a version for the site too - colours would definitely have to be changed, but I've got to install illustrator first...

EDIT/ ahh, I see you also posted on-site worstje

« Last post by tomos on January 06, 2011, 11:52 AM »
How many people on DC are ambidextrous, I wonder? Random curiosity...

depends on your definition -
I use the mouse in both hands but if I have to do fine work it's much easier with my left.
I only started cause I totally screwed up my main hand (for a good while too) when I began using computers (drawing). I was working on a high table with the hard right-angled edge sticking into my wrist....

I used my right hand almost exclusively as training (& to give my left a rest). Brushing teeth with the wrong hand is actually very challenging if you havent done it before!

we placed the buttons below the slideshow. we couldn't include the "categories" in the menu.

they're good there, they move the footer down a bit which is good.
They are nice and discreet too as text links
Looks great now, very clean - I like it.
