...did you get ubcd4win from this page http://www.ubcd4win.com/downloads.htm ?

Yes; http://downloads.lit...o/index.php?dlid=522
- and I believe you're right about it being a false positive.

... jump the NOD32 security suite when it is ready http://www.wildersse...wthread.php?t=170556

"when its ready" - yeah. It IS ready, for beta-testers, but I do not dare to have a final "version 01" release replace Outpost; Eset + users might find that it takes a lot to catch up with the best.

But it sure is looking neat already:

I guess there aren't any comments since most of us that would use this kind of extended functionality have already moved to an explorer replacement...

Having read "Getting to know Directory Opus" I can understand what you mean. I never cared for such programs before because of their asking prices, but this Directory Opus 9 is awesome!

- and so is the price.   :(

Outright wrong!

- sorry for the harsh wording!  :-[  - you might say I was too curt...  wallbash.gif

Yes, I did notice the word 'decent', but I cannot think of anyone that will say that NOD32 is not a decent anti-virus program. Can you? NOD32 did not detect Trojan.Spy.Banker.AEC. I am more surprised that no-one yet commented on UBCD4WIN launching a Trojan!

Maybe I will look more into Kaspersky some day, but not for now as my NOD32 license will last for another 1½ year. I am even thinking about extending the license for Spyware Doctor within the next month; it just removed a Trojan.Spy.Banker.AEC which came with UBCD4WIN.

BTW: Anyone who has a coupon code for Spyware Doctor? I am a little short on cash because of this new PC I suddenly had to buy.

It looks like he is talking about SSM as an anti-malware program rather than a firewall.

Q: So there’s no magic bullet?

A: Well, System Safety Monitor – the program that tracks Windows activity in real-time – is as good a place to start as any for combating Pinch-like malware. And, yes, you’ll be pleased to hear that Outpost is likely to do a decent job too.

Yes, I should have paid more attention to the details in the wording. Only, I thought of it to be an inaccurate translation because Outpost was named in the same sentence, but of course Outpost PRO is a "firewall with anti-spyware".

..., given that QTToolbar2 only searches the current folder it's very extensive custom search options really seems overkill.

I have only had this machine for a month, so I don't really use Search, yet - I know where the little stuff I have so far is located - but please don't forget that QT will search the entire PC as well, if you want it to. But of course you're right; it really should search subfolders too.

..., the problem however lies in the XP setup on her system.  After "Disabling Access" to Internet Explorer and never opening it I have a never-ending supply of pop-ups in Explorer windows as soon as I access the internet.

You should not disable anything!
Please:
1) reset XP settings for IE, and
2) make Firefox the default browser.

Nothing else.

I have known about System Safety Monitor for some years, but never thought of it to be worth my attention - until today when I received an e-mail from Agnitum (the maker of Outpost firewall) where they interviewed some ex-hacker, and of course asked him what firewall he would recommend. He did answer Outpost, they claim, but to my surprise the first firewall he named was System Safety Monitor. His answer made me think twice. The Outpost license I have will run out this summer, and maybe its time I should dare to use something else - maybe I should listen to this ex-criminal's expert opinion on the subject and try out System Safety Monitor?

This is most definitely SearchAsYouType. Yes!

But only within the active folder tab.

Curt, Nighted: are all the above search features included in QTTabbar too? Does it even have some extra search features (apart from search as you type)?

I was too hasty when I wrote that QT has SearchAsYouType, because I had already done one search, which I had forgotten at the moment, so when I did the second search the answers popped up right away - meaning that the SearchAsYouType really only includes the memory. My bad; sorry.

I think Toolbar2 comes right out of the TabBar search box - at the moment I can think of no extra or lacking search features. [Edit:] I do not think QT was ever meant to replace Windows Desktop Search.

At the Japaneese infoseek.co.jp Edit: http://qttabbar.wikidot.com/ you can freely have a nice little something, named QT Tabbar. I've tried it for a couple of days and have become so excited about it that it has replaced the Explorer buttons. One of the best features may be the search box; it will search the folder at present, and will search as you type - making it a lot faster to use in subdirectories than the WDS 3.1 which I gave praise to only a few days ago. Other features are New window, Clone this, Close all but current, Close this, Recently closed, Close, Close left, Close right, Top most, Groups, Copy tool, Opacity, Lock, Applications, Up one level, Go forward / back, Reload and Tabbed browsing.

Go visit the site and read the manual.

You might come to love this 'extended toolbar'.  :-*

Maybe app103 will tell something about it? I believe I found the link at one of her sites

Did you run the test at http://www.liutiliti...ocesslibrary/server/  ??
- if not, maybe you should.

Note: server.exe is a process registered as a backdoor vulnerability which may be installed for malicious purposes by an attacker allowing access to your computer from remote locations, stealing passwords, Internet banking and personal data. If unaccounted for, this process should be removed immediately.

Note: server.exe could also be a process which belongs to the . This program is a non-essential process, but should not be terminated unless suspected to be causing problems.

Determining whether server.exe is a virus or a legitimate Windows process depends on the directory location it executes or runs from.

Today my anti-virus program (avast home edition) came up saying that C:\WINDOWS\system32\server.exe is infected

Not present on my XP SP2...

Maybe it should be setver.exe, not server.exe ??

Living Room / Re: Windows XP Annoyance: ToolTip pop-ups
« Last post by Curt on April 08, 2007, 03:29 PM »
I have the opposite problem. I lose my tooltips periodically, systemwide. I thought this was a 9x specific problem for a long time and then I got XP and found out that isn't the case.

I don't just lose them on the taskbar...I lose them for everything.

April, if you loose the tooltips again, you will most likely be able to make them come back if you dis- and en- able the feature by using X-Setup Pro 9 in Classic mode > Appearance > Explorer > Content Display Settings > Explorer /Desktop ToolTip Options.

You can try the program for free and keep any new settings after the trial. Over time I have tried the program several times without buying it, though I liked it a lot, but with Pro 9 I found the new feature "Windows Programs" so helpful that this time I bought it.

Curt,

How to Create a Bootable Windows XP Setup Disk on a Preinstalled / Preloaded Windows System

Hope it helps!  :)

HowToHaven is telling me to create an ASCII text file, but I don't seem to have that option, only ANSI, Unicode and UTF-8. I have saved the file with quotes around the name, so Windows has not added the usual ".txt", but is calling it 'a file' - not 'text file' - is that what he is talking about? Is it already "ASCII'ished"??
