Living Room / Re: adding memory to my Dell Precision 380

:(

It *is* a netbook (not made for speed, so I wouldn't expect it to have multiple RAM slots), but still, that's bad...
Tried Crucial's customer support? Might be able to send it back or get a refund of some type...
-wreckedcarzz (April 10, 2009, 11:20 PM)

Apparently, the model I bought is the only MSI Wind that DOESN'T have an extra RAM slot. They decided instead to put some stupid 3G cell phone thing I'll never use in there instead.

ARGH!

I'm not happy with Crucial right now. >:(

I scanned my wife's computer and it recommended two 1GB sticks for her laptop and I decided to try my MSI Wind again and this time it said I could upgrade another 1GB. So I ordered all 3 sticks and got them today.

I installed my wife's new RAM first and was finished in 4 minutes. Then I started the process of taking apart my netbook and spent a few minutes unscrewing all the screws and working the entire bottom off the thing. I finally got it off and lo and behold there is no memory slot for the stick of RAM I've got.  >:(

Now I'm doubly mad! I was certain when I ordered this that I could upgrade it to 2GB of RAM and Crucial led me to believe it was also possible. Now I've broken the warranty sticker to upgrade the RAM (because I read online that MSI decided to allow people to upgrade the RAM without voiding the warranty) and there is no way to upgrade the RAM!

Another Example, how long have game consoles been 64 bit?

From my understanding, game consoles were only 64-bit for 2 generations. PS2, N64 and Nintendo Gamecube were all 64-bit. Oh yeah, and the Atari Jaguar, if you consider that a game console. If I recall correctly, all of the major consoles are already on 128-bit processors (and the Dreamcast was 128-bit ahead of its time!).

As I understand it Windows 7 will be a 64 bit environment only.

Isn't that what they said about Vista? And if it is true, then why are there 32bit Windows 7 beta versions?

N.A.N.Y. 2009 / Re: NANY 2009 Release: Trout (audio player)
« Last post by Deozaan on April 06, 2009, 02:20 AM »
Is there a way to get Trout to save Playlist info after every track? It keeps going back to an old playlist even though every time I start it up (since March 28th) I open a different playlist.

Also, if my PC crashes or whatever, if Trout ends unexpectedly, then it might "rewind" the playlist several hours to where it was the last time it shut down.

So what I'd like is that on every track change, for Trout to save the current playlist and what location in the playlist it is currently playing.

Sorry this is so scattered. I've gotten distracted and come back to writing it several times over the past few hours.

They also have AutoPilot for Gmail, apparently a product by CADIE. Strangely it's only showing in one of my Gmail accounts.

Developer's Corner / Re: PushButton: Powerful open source Flash game engine
« Last post by Deozaan on March 30, 2009, 06:46 PM »
I'd heard about PushButtonLabs from Jeff Tunnel's blog Make It Big in Games, but I didn't realize they were creating an Open Source engine. But it makes sense, considering he says he thinks that games are going to be getting cheaper and cheaper until they are free. Or at least for some markets.

As an example of the future, look at the game section of the iPhone App Store. In this market, the right price for a game is $0, and I believe that is where all game prices are heading. For a while, there will be successes at $3.99 to $1, but eventually, I think you will see capitulation to the $0 price point.

Why are games going to what many see as absurdly low price points? It is a simple answer. Supply and demand. It used to be difficult and expensive to make games, so few people had the knowledge to create a game, and even if you could figure out how to make a game, there were only a few distribution outlets. There was no Internet, so only a few games could be brought to the few shelves open to selling them. With relatively few games being made, and fewer being distributed via hard media, games were scarce, resulting in high price points.

I used to receive the Broken Saints newsletter. At the end of each one was just one of these. So not only was it an incredibly wordy rant, it was probably literally the longest (chronologically) rant ever, since it happened over the course of a couple years.

Check out my recommendation for Broken Saints here.

Does it have anything to do with FARR plugins? If so, check this thread:

Okay, so the subject seems to describe just about any media player out there already, but I couldn't think of how else to describe it.

I've had an idea recently that I think would be incredible for media players. It may already exist, or it may not be possible to do; I don't know about the inner workings of how data is stored in audio files. Anyway, the tagging I'm talking about is different than, say ID3v2 tags for MP3s. The kind of tagging I'm talking about is more like the kind of tagging people do on the internet. Short tags that describe and categorize the music based on personal associations (emotion, feeling, genre, instruments, events, whatever).

For instance, a techno song might have the tags "energetic, techno, happy, graduation, Sarah" or whatever you personally associate with that song.

What I think would be great is if there was a media player that allowed you to tag songs in this manner, that could also create playlists on the fly from your tags. You could select the "instrumental, depressing, new age, techno" tags and it would create a playlist of all songs that had at least one of those tags. Or perhaps you could customize it even further and require that the song must have x number of those n tags to be included in the playlist.

Is there anything out there that already does this? If not, is this something that would be feasible to implement with current audio formats?

This is a topic that has come up and been discussed before.

https://www.donation...ex.php?topic=16127.0

I didn't notice it last time! I actually really like your idea that you proposed!

So here's a new idea: Auto-lock old threads that haven't been touched for several months. Then, if you want to post a reply, you have to summon the Thread Necromancer (by clicking a link/button) to revive the thread for you. Reviving the thread unlocks it and makes an automatic post (by the Thread Necro) saying something along the lines of "This thread has been resurrected from the dead! The original post was made on [insert date here] and the previous post was made on [insert date here]. You have been warned!"

To make it clear, the Thread Necromancer isn't really a person and you don't need any kind of approval to summon the Thread Necromancer. You just click a button, it says "Are you sure you want to revive an old thread?" and you click yes and the thread is unlocked and the Thread Necro makes his post.

But if you still don't like the idea of locking a thread, then I think everything I just said would still work except leave out the part about auto-locking and unlocking threads. Just warn that the Thread Necromancer must be summoned to reply to a thread that has been dead for a certain amount of time.

Living Room / Anti-Necrospamming
« Last post by Deozaan on March 26, 2009, 07:11 PM »
There's been a trend where spammers will revive an old thread that hasn't been posted in for several months or longer. Sometimes the spam has to do with the original thread (which is why it is revived) and sometimes it just happens to be a place to spam.

I thought it might be a good idea to automatically lock threads that haven't been posted in for, say, more than 6 months (though the length of time is debatable). This would actually serve 3 purposes:

1) It would prevent spammers from resurrecting old threads.
2) It would prevent new members from resurrecting old threads (they don't always realize the date on threads when they're new to the forum).
3) It would prevent regular members from getting confused when old threads are resurrected and not realizing the original post was made 3 years ago.

Additionally, if someone wanted to continue a conversation on a dead thread or start up a related topic, perhaps there could be a method of easily starting a new thread in the same forum section that links to the dead thread. This would allow new conversations to be brought up about old topics while allowing people to read the old material, but only contributing new material, thus keeping most of the information in the new topic up to date and relevant.

So what do the rest of you think? Good idea? Bad? Got a better suggestion? Indifferent?

Well, since I started the thread, I guess I'll end it to prevent spammers from resurrecting it again later with links to similar scams.

Swoopo is a scam! Avoid it and sites like it!

Thread locked.

Living Room / Re: Swoopo - A New Take on Online Auctions, or a Scam?

It's a total scam. As Jeff Atwood says, "swoopo is about as close to pure, distilled evil in a business plan as I've ever seen".

That's the same conclusion I came to last November. And I believe we have a spammer who resurrected a 5 month thread to post about a similarly evil business plan in rockybid.
