General Software Discussion / Re: Mac OS Lion opinions
« Last post by Renegade on July 24, 2011, 05:57 PM »
There are 2 words that never occur in the same sentence in Cupertino: backward compatibility.

http://www.pcworld.c...n_mac_os_x_lion.html

Known issues in Lion affect Adobe software such as Acrobat, Adobe Drive, Contribute, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Flash Builder, Flash Catalyst, Flash Player, Lightroom, LiveCycle, Photoshop and Premiere Pro.

I wonder if Apple is purposefully trying to sabotage Adobe...

Adobe doesn't suggest any deliberate attempt by Apple to cripple Adobe products on Lion

But I'm sure a lot of people are thinking the same thing.

I won't be upgrading for a while. Once I start Mac development again, then I'll look at it. However, for now, it just doesn't make sense.

Have you looked into key-loggers? I'm sure something in that area would have comprehensive recording.

Love that link BTW.

I thought someone would get a laugh out of that 'rant'. :)

When I was in college I took a CS language course where we had to design and build a simple interpreter for our own computer language. (Note: I discovered the real challenge is getting the parser right.) My language was called TWIT. (That's What I Thought). Most of the system responses were slangy "laid back" expressions which were intended to be amusing.

My professor (formerly of SperryRand) was not amused. Despite the fact it worked, I still got a C+. (Lowest grade I ever got in my entire academic career. Bummer!) His note under the grade said: You would have gotten an B+ or maybe an A- had you taken my assignment more seriously!!!

"Old-guard" college professors! Jeez...:-\ ;D

Sounds like a profoundly unhappy person. You'd think that a normal person would appreciate the creativity and thought put into that.

I really wish people would stop screwing around and being complete friggin' idiots developing new languages that nobody wants or needs.

For Christmas sakes already!!!

Just let's all stick with this language and be DONE with it~! ;D

Works on cheap linux or windows hosting with postgresql and mysql or any other online db.

I would qualify that as "Sometimes works on cheap windows..."

The first thing to know when you try to configure PHP on Windows is that you need to go through the PHP extensions and add them in one-by-one so you know which ones break everything. It's not like they just throw an error and die -- they kill PHP completely. No such thing as graceful errors... It's kind of like that hard-core psycho in the movies - if I die, then everyone else is gonna die with me~! :P

The next thing to know is that most of the coolest and most useful extensions for PHP are the ones that break on Windows... :(

PHP on Windows is finicky at best. I wouldn't ever want to use a Windows server for a serious PHP site. Or at least not a WIMP server. Maybe WAMP is better. Haven't tried WAMP there. (Though I've wanted to for some time now... Previously I've read that it's simply a beast to setup. Maybe things are better now.)

To me, PHP seems to be a solid and capable language, but it also seems to suffer from many of the disadvantages of Perl (fugly in the extreme).

I'd like to get started on doing more with PHP though. My main thing would be to get a plugin to make it more friendly in Visual Studio. I'm just addicted to the way Visual Studio makes things so much easier. I really don't care about focusing on the code so much, as I'm more interested in getting things done. VS makes that so much nicer. Type. Compile. Run debug. Find errors/debug. Fix. Move on to next step. If I could get that with PHP, wow... I'd be a happy camper. :)

But like worstje said, the recursive meaning was devised after the fact - a not uncommon activity with it's own name: "backronym".

My favorite backronym is actually wrong, though if you search for it, you'll get a tonne of results: SLAYER - Satan Laughs As You Eternally Rot.

Hm, I'll wait and see. They'll be severely hampered now that the remains of Novell have stopped development of Mono :-\

That's the thing -- Xamarian is the new Mono basically. It's got Miguel, and he's been the driving force behind it. The guy gave the world GNOME, so I figure I'll give him the benefit of the doubt for now. Still, crossing my fingers and hoping for the best.
7110
I know this won't get some people excited, but... Miguel De Icaza has Xamarian open now! That's pretty fast all things considered.

I won't be buying right away as I've got enough on my plate and won't get to developing anything there for a while, but it's good to know that they're still going.

O'Reilly has some pretty cool stuff on their FB page:

http://www.facebook.com/OReilly

Check it out. I'm hoping for a free programming book after they announced a little contest.

But they seem to have good deals offered as well, like 50% off, etc.

Hope that helps someone or saves someone a few bucks.

Living Room / Fake Apple Store
« Last post by Renegade on July 20, 2011, 10:38 PM »
Where? China of course. :)

http://www.businessi...e-store-china-2011-7

They looked like Apple products. It looked like an Apple store. It had the classic Apple store winding staircase and weird upstairs sitting area. The employees were even wearing those blue t-shirts with the chunky Apple name tags around their necks.

We proceeded to place a bet on whether or not this was a genuine Apple store or just the best ripoff we had ever seen – and to be sporting, I bet that it was real.

I know, you guys are laughing: an Apple store in Kunming? No one who doesn’t know me personally has ever heard of Kunming before. Kunming is the end of the Earth. It’s all true – but seriously, China warps your mind into believing that anything is possible, if you stay here long enough.

Cynical Comment
So what's the big deal? Apple's been selling fake computers forever... :P

But when it happens here the antidisestablishmentarians come out in force and start harrumphing about why lines can't get toed.

Wow! Used in a real SENTENCE~!  ;D

I would like to add a third rule to the above:

Living Room / Re: What are good sunglasses (brands)?
« Last post by Renegade on July 20, 2011, 09:56 PM »
I think I'd prefer as light weight as possible, ultra padded/soft on the nose and ears. And really big lenses that cover as much of my field of vision as possible so I can see wherever I look without having to point my face directly at what I'm looking at to get it within the lense frame.

+1 there.

I don't like heavy. I like them to be as invisible as possible.

As for large lenses, I don't like them large, but that's why I like my Oakleys so much. They curve nicely around my face so I don't need large lenses. There isn't much space at the edges where I can look "outside" the sunglasses.

It's a different solution for the same problem. Curved frames vs. large lenses.

Ah! I have a picture of mine here:

I like having one of those cord-thingies so I can drop them on my chest or just not worry about losing them. (Frig... I know what they're called in Korean, and can't think for the life of me what the English is...)

You can get nice ones that don't look all "grannyish".

Just one of those accessories that I find useful with glasses.

I don't have any debt. There are enough chains and shackles without adding a big iron ball to the chain...

Spokesmen from the FBI's national office in Washington and from its field offices in San Francisco and New York confirmed to Computerworld that the agency had carried out law enforcement actions related to an ongoing cybercrime investigation.

I like Oakleys. The frames bend nicely around my face, and keep out that 'edge-sun'. They're nutty expensive, but... They FIT amazingly well. Do go try out a pair, even if you don't plan on buying them. They'll give you a nice feel for what a curved set of frames can mean for a proper fit. (Not all face-shapes will be amicable to them, but it's worth a shot.)

Some Oakleys are god-awful tacky. But they do have some very nice ones as well. These aren't the ones I have, but they're the type that I'd go for:

The problem with cheap sunglasses is that you never really know if they're properly polarized or not. If they're simply 'dark', then that will actually allow more damaging light (from those parts of the spectrum) into your eyes than should be, which can damage your sight.

The solution there is to buy from a reputable brand, and pay through the nose. OR, as noted above, to go get a custom pair from your optician, who SHOULD know properly what lenses properly filter out the UV light that can damage your eye-sight.

Either way -- you want to make sure that you aren't damaging your eye-sight with 'dark' glasses that don't filter the right spectrum.

I've also had a nice pair of CKs that I rather liked. Those got stolen. Oh well. (The next set were Oakleys that I lost on a bus in Thailand. They got replaced with another set of Oakleys as I liked their fit so much.)

Developer's Corner / Re: JavaScript / jQuery Editor Suggestions?
« Last post by Renegade on July 19, 2011, 06:34 PM »
Well, I went back to VS...

The -vsdoc.js files only work inside of *.js files. So, you can't just add a:

/// <reference path="jquery-1.6.1-vsdoc.js" />

Reference inside of script tags to something like an *.ascx or *.htm file and expect it to work.

So, in other words, to get the code completion in VS, you can't take the quick & dirty road, and instead need to break things down properly and put your JavaScript code in a proper JavaScript file.

It's a bit of a hassle when you only want to hack around some, but... FWIW - It works there for what I can see so far, and appears to work well.

I'd like to find something lighter than Eclipse or NetBeans. For simply editing JavaScript, they're pretty heavy. I suppose I should look into the VS thing some more. So far it's been extremely disappointing and entirely useless. I'm just so used to seeing things in code completion --- it's a super-fast way to get up to speed on things.

DotNetNuke 6 is at RC now!

I wrote up a few things here.

Anyways, if you're in the market for a CMS, DNN is looking way better now than it was. Major improvements. It was good before, but now? You need to judge for yourself.

I suspect that the alleged 'crack' may contain a nasty payload destined for the unsuspecting, unscrupulous down-loader!

Many crack sites will simply serve you a virus / trojan / rootkit wrapped in an exe / zip file which is given the same name as your original search term.

+1

Another possibility is to simply have something for search engines to get people, and hopefully get clicks.

A lot of sites have keyword farms for that. They can get lists from different places and just puke it onto a page.

A lot of other sites use arbitrage to get people to their sites, e.g. eBay, Amazon, etc.

Developer's Corner / JavaScript / jQuery Editor Suggestions?
« Last post by Renegade on July 19, 2011, 07:09 AM »
Can anyone recommend any JavaScript / jQuery editors?

Specifically, I'd like to get something that is similar to Visual Studio with intellisense and code completion.

So far I'm finding that the jquery-1.6.1-vsdoc.js files dont' really work all that well. Ok. They don't work. Maybe I'm doing something wrong... I'll look into it again, but still, any recommendations? Windows or Mac is fine. Free is preferable, but if you know something that's shareware and rocks, that's ok too.

Thanks in advance.

I hate politicians. Why? Because they do not understand debt. Normal people understand debt, but they don't. Why is that?

Debt needs to be paid back!

+1

I utterly fail to understand how anyone can condone deficit spending. Talk to someone in finance, and wow... You're in for some wonderful BS rationalizations that if you were seriously high, might make sense.
