Don't forget there is a free version of WordWeb - try it, see if you like it and if you do it may be worth buying the Pro version.

General Software Discussion / Re: Wanted ... Photo to DVD archiving tool
« Last post by Carol Haynes on November 10, 2005, 11:05 AM »
I have used ACDSee since version 3 and in my humble opinion it has got worse rather than better in each version. So much so that I have now uninstalled it and don't really intend to use it again.

The final straw for me was the introduction of Camera RAW formats. The rendering of Canon RAW formats (at least on my computer) was utterly hideous - the colours were all wrong, they were dark and murky. Not a problem in any other program I have tried. I am using colour management (including the ACDSee ProtoPro plugin).

When I asked for help to get it resolved they fobbed me off with wait for the next update ... guess what the next update made no difference and the one after that was another $50 ... I decided I had given them enough money, I'd rather look elsewhere.

I am actually very impressed with FastStone Image Viewer (which is free) and following recent posts and considering IMatch - though at the moment I am thinking of going with Archive Creator 3 (at the start of this thread) which does exactly what I want and is very clean at archiving. Just a bit pricy for that songle function.

No probs tinyvillager, I was quite enjoying this thread.

Now then:

should we get Mouser to institute the 'bad word filter' here (there actually is one)   :-*

In other words: believe what you like so long as it agrees with what I believe.  The problem is that doesnt work!  It's fine in theory, but as soon as you say I dont care what other people believe so long as they arent intolerant, you actually care what they believe.

No I don't think that - what I think is 'believe what you want, but don't force those beliefs on others". I used to be a Christian (for reasons I am not going to go into am not any longer) so I understand where Christians come from on this. A personal example illustrates this:

My mother is a Christian (a Salvationist) and it causes all kinds of problems because she 'doesn't want me to go to hell' and sees it as her mission in life to convert me. Whilst I can understand her personal concern (I have done the evangelical bit myself in the past) it is not sufficient reason for me to have to accept her beliefs for myself. If her constant hectoring on this issue damages our relationship I will be very sad but at times it seems like that is very likely. WHo is more reasonable - should I profess to believe something I don't to make her happy or should she allow me to live my own life and get on with hers?

The trouble is her kind of Christianity is precisely the sort that forced compulsory Christian worship into UK schools - which I think is worse than abominable, esp. when you look at schools where the predominant population is Muslim !!!

Anyway enough of this ... I am happy to continue this conversation if you like but lets take it onto personal messaging rather than bore everyone to death here.

I agree partially to seperation of church and state. However, seperation of church and state leads to legislation of morals.  How can you seperate your beliefs from policy?  For one thing, that's like asking the media not to be biased, but for another thing that's asking people to be unfeeling robots.  I dont care how much you try you cannot make an unbiased decision, just as you cannot prove anything.

Of course I don't want automatons ;-)

The thing I really object to is politicians wearing their religion as a badge and pushing their ideas as though they are automatically endorsed by God (Bush and Blair both spring to mind on this). 'Religious' people don't have a monopoly on morality - in fact it seems to be common experience throughout history, and especially recent history, that politics fueled by religion just leads to atrocity (from whichever side of the fence you come from).

Don't get me wrong people can believe what they like, and I will respect their right to believe them, I am just not prepared to live quietly in a society based on minority belief systems that I believe are intolerant of others' beliefs.

as for wiki and bugtracking button on every page - i'm still trying to figure out how much info can be tolerated on each page, and i think we are approaching the limit smiley

I know what you mean ;)

However, the Menu Bar at the top of each page isn't too cluttered so two extra buttons there wouldn't really hurt (IMHO). In fact I think it would be clearer as the forums are probably the most complicated pages anyway in terms of number of options to click about on !!

Hey Clif - join the club ...

I bought an academic copy of Visual Studio 6 and manuals for it (all 2 foot of book shelf which has bent under the weight) a couple of years ago. Still to write my first program with it!!

I used to really enjoy programming (I used to teach it in Assembler, BASIC, Pascal and C !) but I find the learning curve in Windows software writing is too intimidating. There really hasn't been a project I fancy doing that I can face trying ...

I find the documentation (particularly MS's) really off putting - it is so full of acronyms (that are rarely defined) ... Windows API, COM class etc. that my eyes glaze on page 1. The other thing is I really HATE books (and software documentation) that start with a 'What's new ...' section or a jargon riddled ReadME file. I can't pull myself away from reading these, but by the time I have got through a page the book is thrown or the window closed ...

Oh well, I'm going to give Studio 2005 a bash as it is sparkly and new, free and seems to come with some idiot proof tutorials ...

Separation of church and state is a good thing.

I'd say it is more than a good thing it is absolutely imperative ... we have such a mess in the UK because the chruch has a dispropotionate say on moral issues (at the last census there were less than 4% of the population 'communicant members' and yet every time there is a moral debate the church is heavily represented, and they are hugely represented in the House of Lords).

I would perhaps go even further and say that politicians should not be able to use religious belief to justify policy - that would have a huge knock on effect on both sides of the pond ...

(Sorry for the political diatribe - but this is quite an interesting thread - even if it is diverging a bit!)

Actually what I would really like (but I know isn't likely to happen any time soon) is the option to have a 'watched' thread feature so that I can bring up a list of threads I am interested in whether there are new posts or not.

Not sure what you mean by the 'collaborative review section' - if it is in the forum then I'd guess cut and paste is the only way.

If it is going to be in the wiki, can you open the editor on the page and cut and paste the editor content to a new page in the wiki ?

Aside ...

FWIW I still think the "Wki" and "Track Bugs" buttons should be on the site menu bar rather than the forum menu bar. They should be accessible from every page on the site not just the forum. In particular the "Track Bugs" link should be available from the download area.

Very true - you can also use ISO Buster to extract them to a folder if you don't want virtual drives ;)

If you ever want to install again in the future it may be worth burning them though, as they take up a fair chunk of disk space (about 2.2Gb) and they are big files to redownload (even with broadband).

Just been downloading these 5 CD images.

The MS website says use Nero 6 to burn them. Unfortunately they are .IMG files and Nero doesn't support that extension. From reading around an MVP (sorry can't remember who now) pointed out the solution is to simply change the extension from .IMG to .ISO and then Nero can handle them. If you aren't sure how to do that then go to Control Panel > Folder View > View Tab and uncheck "Hide extensions for known filetypes" (12th line in Windows XP). You can then see the .IMG extension and change it.

Can't really understand why we need two extenstions to mean the same thing (at least in this case).

I gather Roxio has the same problem (the other recommended burner).

If any one wants to burn these and doesn't have suitable software DVD Decrypter can burn .IMG files and is a free download.

I downloaded the ZIP file version of the 'test' installation. The documentation page I was reading was the 'installation' manual - and the  'easy' version at that!

This is supposed to be the most basic installation as it is all ready to go, except for entering a couple of details realting to the MySQL database. (The 1-2-3 install).

First off it doesn't run when you have installed it. The instal/index.php script has been nobbled to prevent it being run. No mention in the manual of this, you have to go and edit out the 'die()' instruction to allow the script to run. OK did that, and was presented with the installation screen.

It looked nothing like the 1-2-3 install, but was similar to the full install. However, it started on the third item down the list, not at the top item which covers basic configuartion steps. OK I thought - this must be deliberate as part of the 'easy' install so tried to go ahead as described. Needless to say it didn't work.

Went back to the installer again, looked at basic configuration. Loads of folder permissions needed to be changed - no automated way of doing this (like in SMF and oither packages) so I spent about 20 minutes adjusting all the folder permissions by hand.

Checked out the database section - wouldn't let me change the database name (it was set as test - and nothing I could do would allow it to be changed). The server does not allow DB names in the form (they have to be user_dbname) - so that wasn't going to work. Created a DB and had to go find the config file and manually edit the db name.

Back to the installer - new name now recognised - but the installer insisted on trying to create the DB itself, even though it already existed. Deleted the db I created - tried again - failed to create DB.

This was how it started ... I fiddled and faffed for ages until I eventually created a DB with the correct tables.

The 'test' setup includes data - couldn't get the install script to install that data in the DB - the installer was a clear as mud on this - but it didn't matter what I clicked it wouldn't install the data - though it frequently asked me to delete data in the DB that didn't exist.

After what seemed a life time of messing abouyt I finally got it working only to be confronted with a login screen.

The documentation made no reference whatsoever to this - and it was obvious from comments left by  others who had tried the 1-2-3 install that they were as mystified as I was.

Enough was enough - time to go to bed, and time to dump it.

Bad experience - no matter how good the software if the documentation is this bad (all 1600 pages of it) life is just too short!!

I thought the MediaWiki documentation was bad (confusing, incomplete and wildly inaccurate) but Typo3's is even worse! I presume this documentation was produced for an earlier version installation and hasn't been updated - but what is the point of new versions if no one knows how to get them to work?

Try DVDIdlePro

It disables all the 'shared content' on CDs ... I never want to see any of it anyway even when it isn't the Rootkit rubbish.

It also repairs 'damaged' directories and file layouts.

Works fine for me

The story goes on ... This in todays Desktop Pipeline Newsletter

Editor's Note: Smarten Up, Sony

Question: You have two pieces of computer code. Both install themselves on your PC without your permission or knowledge. Both hide their files from the operating system so that they can't be detected or removed. Both keep track of what you're doing on your PC. Both transmit the information they collect across the Internet. One was written by an anonymous slacker in either Peoria or Budapest and sold to a fat guy with multinational mob connections. The other was written by First 4 Internet Ltd. in London and sold to Sony BMG Music Entertainment, a multinational corporation.

Which of these pieces of software is malware?

For my money, both of them are.

Sony, for its part, says its "antipiracy" software is no such thing.

Forgive me, but Sony's credibility isn't at an all-time high with me right now -- not after last week's report that CDs from the company install a rootkit on PCs that play the disks. At the time I wondered how stupid could these guys be?. Then this morning The Boston Globe had a story saying the Sony spyware surreptitiously collects data.

I'm having trouble believing even Sony is so stupid they'd use a rootkit to invade the privacy of their own customers, so I'm inclined to accept their denial. I mean, anonymous slackers and fat mob guys don't have too much to lose from public-relations backlashes, but you'd think a company like Sony would have thought it through, wouldn't you?

Well, just wait, it gets worse.

After the rootkit foo hit the fan Sony posted a patch to reveal the files, and a link to contact the company for help in uninstalling the rootkit. But Mark Russinovich, one of the researchers who first revealed the Sony rootkit, told The Globe that the patch doesn't work and can cause data loss.

Sony and Mathew Gilliat-Smith, chief executive of First 4 Internet Ltd., the company that sold the rootkit to Sony, deny that, too.

"In theory there should be no concern," Gilliat-Smith told The Globe.

Yeah, right. I quote Balaban's Law: "In theory, theory and reality are the same thing. In reality, they're different."

My advice to Sony has short-term and long-term components:

In the short term, Sony, like later this afternoon, remove the rootkit from your CDs and offer to replace any copies that escaped into the wild for free. That won't keep the rootkit out of the hands of hackers, but it will perhaps reduce the annoyance felt by the rest of us.

And in the longer term, quit treating your customers like prison inmates. Treat them like customers. There's a solution to this whole CD piracy thing, and it works in a way that is very much in line with your business model: You sell me something.

In particular, you sell me a one-time license to do what I want with the products I buy from you. I'd even agree not engage in activities that materially reduce the market for your products, like distributing an unreasonable number of copies. If you'd figure out how I could do it, I'd be happy to pay a reasonable fee for copies I give to others, perhaps a couple of dollars, something equivalent to the profit you would make on the copy based on the figures you report to the recording artist in royalty statements.

I can hear you screaming, but believe me, I'm making a big compromise here. I don't treat any other company that sells me a product that way. I don't pay Ford a fee when I drive my car, for example.

I realize that computers and the Internet have changed things. But you've got to realize it, too. The quicker you do, the smarter you'll look, and right now, Sony, you could use the help because you're not looking so smart. If you got stuck in a police line-up I couldn't pick you out from the anonymous slackers and fat mob guys.

4am - just spent two hours playing with Typo3 ... (should have gone to bed)

It may have the most documentation in the world - but it is a shame that it isn't in the least bit accurate, and doesn't bear any relation to what you actually see on the screen.

Don't believe the 1-2-3 easy install - it simply does not work ... not even close ...

Finally did all the (not so easy) installation (well as much as I could do) and went to the front page of the website and it asked me to login as admin ...

Given that the DB didn't yet have any users - and there was no where to set them up (plus a whole list of people complaining on the install doc page without any useful answers) the whole lot went in the bin!!

Thanks - I don't mind tinkering but this is beyond frustration ...

Just had a look at Typo3 website - it certainly looks interesting and the companies that use it (DHL, 3M amongst others) is impressive (and so are their websites).

Mouser this may be the one you are looking for ... it has file version control, and full user rights management !!

Only drawback I can see is that if you want WYSiWYG editing you have to use Internet Explorer at the moment (text based editing in other browsers - but Java based editor is in the pipeline).

If anyone is site building and interested in what is available (for free) checkout the features page
