General Software Discussion / Re: Detecting RootKits
« Last post by f0dder on July 07, 2007, 04:51 PM »
...and just remember that nothing will be 100% proof in detecting rootkits. There's so many ways you can hide yourself, and after that it becomes a cat-and-mouse game where anti-rootkit software jumps through massive hoops to try and detect specific rootkits.

If you listen to security experts, much of "hacking" (which should be cracking, BTW) is just social engineering. Does that mean it will now be illegal to own a dictionary?
No, breaking into computers==hacking, breaking copyright protection schemes== cracking.

Hacking isn't "writing code" anymore, except in the "I wrote a quick hack" sense, or "that's a pretty darn ugly hack".

f0dder, that's one funky coaster
It took ~3 seconds in the microwave to make it look like that... along with scary sounds from the microwave itself, and blue lightning bolts along the surface of the disc. Preeeeety funky stuff :D :-*

as you've mentioned that the law targets tools that are designed to "commit a crime" then it sounds like they need to be more specific - how many tools are designed solely to commit a crime?
-nudone
It's up to the same retards who passed the law to judge whether something was "designed to commit a crime" - there's reason to be reacting.

and if this applies to the individual then does that not also mean that they will need to prove that your intention was to "commit a crime". simply possessing a particular tool doesn't automatically mean you are going to do something criminal with it.
-nudone
Obviously you need to do something to get enough attention for law enforcement to get a search warrant and look through your computers. Doesn't make the law any less retarded, though.

if it litterally means you'll be done for merely 'owning' something then i see many software programs quickly changing their names - or changing there names every month.
-nudone
And then there's things like OllyDebug, IDA, (...) that have nothing to do with hacking (since reverse engineering != hacking), but because people in the legal system are such computer-illiterate idiots, they'd be classified that way. I don't live in .de or .uk and I'm not really doing anything to draw legal attention to myself, but I don't like how things are developing...

"Run anything but office applications and games, and we're gonna bust your ass".

nmap's aim is to commit a crime? christ >_< - what about "netcat", then? Eeeeevil program, since it can be used for evil. And I guess networks sniffers are evil as well, regardless that they can be very useful when debugging [your own] network communications.

What about OllyDebug and DataRescue's IDA?

Be careful when using a hammer, splintered pieces of disc aren't good for your eyes.

A few seconds in a microwave works wonders, btw: mwcd.jpg

Hm, not my cup of tea.

You indeed need to destroy the old discs.

Well, *theoretically*, I guess it should be possible to burn more grooves on a CD that's already burnt (ie., you can't "unburn the 1's", but you should be able to "burn the 0's to 1's"), but I dunno if there's any software that will allow this, and whether drive firmware allows it, etc. But it should be physically possible :)

*** [Damn damn damn
it IS the drive  (or it's software/driver maybe?) must try update software etc.
It's a Plextor - wasnt expecting any problems with that...]
Hm, how did you reach that conclusion?

Anyway, check out http://www.deepburner.com - it's one of the better free burning programs I've seen.

Curt: RootKit Hook Analyzer requires a bit of knowledge not to panic :) - a bunch of programs hook kernel functions, since they really need to do that in order to work properly. Too bad you can only see the last hooking program, since hooks can be layered. There isn't really any reliable way to determine multiple levels of hooks, though.

Nice couple of rants, allen, and I have to agree with you. And it's sickening. I appreciate the technology behind web2.0, or rather, the kind of things that the technology allows you to create. Interactiveness without requiring java/flash and without having to constantly reload pages. This can be genuinely useful, not just to make silly toys. But it's oh so goddamn overhyped it makes me want to puke up my intestines and carve out my eyes.

The stripes are preeeeeeetty though, and the generator does work pretty well (just a bit lame that you have to click the preview to make it update, instead of updating auto).

If I had my way, I'd have all the apple fanboys up against the wall, and shot. Not all apple users, mind you, since not all of them are moronic bigots.

I do like simple and pure design (though I'm not a fan of the way apple does it, I'm more into NAD simplicity), but the apple product boxes are just ludicrous. Gimme some specs, kthxpzl.

edit: URL fixed, thanks nudone.

If this turns out well, are you going to contribute this back to the SMF people?

Of course.  What a ridiculous question! we're not savages here!  :P
Well, I meant more in the sense "and do you reckon they might fix up their default behaviour?". Doing the contribution itself is mostly a no-brainer, I even think their license requiresa it? :)

Right now if you search using the editbox at top of the forum, while you are in a forum section, it will ONLY search in that forum section.

This is very disorienting and most people don't realize it.

What if ZillaRank changed this behavior and always searched the whole board, BUT (here is the clever part), gave a higher score bonus to results from the section you are in at the time of search.
It's very disorienting indeed!

I think a drop-down solution might be nice, with "prefer hits from this section", "only search this section" and "just search entire board, dammit!" choices...

one is a compiler that takes about 7 minutes to complete and pegs the CPU at 100% (50% on a dual core) the while.
-Ralf Maximus
Get a build system that supports parallelization... it's really great putting your dualcore system to work :D

Bah.  T'weren't for the extra core, my system would be locked up while the compile compiles.  :-)
-Ralf Maximus (July 04, 2007, 11:52 PM)
Nah, you just need to make sure the compiler and linker are invoked with "below normal" priority, then you still take advantage of both your cores for compiling, but the system still runs pretty smoothly. Trust me, it works wonders :)
7042
it means that a public thank you, or a nice note with a 0.01 donationcredit gift, might be more meaningful and make someone happier than a larger donation without a fun thank you note.
-mouser
Indeed!

I'm very thankful for the donations I've received, some have really helped in the tougher months, but the best donations are those with a comment (or a lot of digits, hehe).

Plextor drives in combo with PlexTools is generally considered one of the better solutions.
-Plasma Man
Too bad it doesn't work out that way in practice >_< - even with unscratched & non-protected CDs, I didn't get consistent results when ripping the same album multiple times with plextools. Both EAC and dBp does, and dBp even comes close to plextool's speed.

Plextor drives, however, do seem to be in the better league wrt. error correction and C2 support and all that. They better damn be, anyway, price considered :)

Yeah, too bad dBp only does per-track, I hope they'll add image support sometime. I really do like the program though, and use it to verify some of the more problematic CDs in my collection. EAC's method isn't as refined and puts more wear & tear on your discs, and they way it's programmed slows down my entire system (well, message handling) while it's ripping, which sucks if ripping one of those multi-hour-to-rip protected CDs >_<. But it does image file extraction, and with the pre-beta that supports AccurateRip even with image extraction, well... :-*

Carol Haynes: so, having OllyDebug and a (legitimately licensed!) copy of DataRescue's IDA might get you into trouble in the .uk? :P
7047
Plasma: if you rip scratched or copy-protected CDs then, yes, your choice of CD drive can be a problem, since this is where the error-correction hard- and firmware starts to really matter.

You need to check out the "reference" version of dBpoweramp btw., the one that supports C2 error pointers, which is what (imho) makes it superior to EAC. I tend to still use EAC myself btw, because it can rip to .wav+.cue combo, and dBp only does single-track rips :(

« Last post by f0dder on July 03, 2007, 06:16 PM »
Can you not create/generate a one-time scheduled task for the deletion/moving/renaming of the folder at the said time the user requested? the scheduler is already running and offers you the flexibility of error codes, triggers and what not.
Yeah, you could do that, but then you might end up with a lot of entries for the task scheduler, depending on how frenzied the user is :)

Post New Requests Here / Re: Folders with "expiration date"
« Last post by f0dder on July 03, 2007, 06:05 PM »
I'd keep information of "watched folders" in some global database file, to avoid having to scan all partitions for those folders, which would be dog slow. And rather than deleting the folders, the program should pop up a reminder once the expiration date is hit.

But all this would still require Yet Another Always Running AppTM, or at least that the monitor app is called regularly from the windows task scheduler thingy.
