Living Room / Re: Dumbed Down Language Observation
« Last post by tomos on March 17, 2011, 05:32 AM »
Daffy Duck :D

I'm wondering if the "of me" structure could be of Irish origin - one common expression is "s/he'll be the death of me". In spite of having the Irish language beaten into me for 13 years at school, I'm not familiar enough with it to say if this structure is taken directly from the Irish. (There are other expressions/structures directly translated from Irish that have travelled abroad, well, to certain countries/areas.)

Funny, I dont find the phrase childish, maybe cause of that familiarity - it's more like something that adults would put in childrens mouths to sound amusing, I think. I'm not very familiar with the exact phrase, but pretty sure I've heard it at the same time. See the quote below for more thoughts on whether childish or not - and another possible origin.

http://volokh.com/ar..._31.shtml#1090814312
Some said they thought it was supposed to imitate the syntax of a child, being as how kids are more apt to say "You're not the boss of me" than (most) adults are. I don't buy this one. It leaves unaddressed the question of why this should sound like childish syntax. After all, how many kids have you heard saying things like friend of me, doctor of me, mother of me, etc.? In other words, most kids seem to have possessives with relational nouns other than boss well in hand, so the question is still: What is so special about boss? And anyway, I think you sound equally childish whether you say, "You're not the boss of me!" or "You're not my boss!"

Other readers guessed that boss of me was formed on analogy with phrases such as king of England, mayor of the town, chair of the committee, etc. At first I didn't put much stock in this hypothesis, either, since the of-phrases in these examples are geographic areas, or collective nouns, not singular individuals. However, one reader (whom I'd be happy to credit, but who wishes to remain anonymous) pointed me to the 1979 movie Norma Rae, in which the title character tells an antagonist something like this:

you may be the boss of this town, you may be the boss of this factory, you may be the boss of this shop, but you ain't the boss of me

This speaker goes from town to factory to shop until she gets to the smallest location of all, consisting of just one person, herself. If she'd switched from boss of to my boss at the end, it would have ruined the flow, so I can actually see a reason for saying boss of me here, and an actual instance of it being formed by analogy with more natural boss of constructions. So my favorite hypothesis at this point is that the originators of the phrase were drawing a contrast between having authority over some area or group of individuals (family, classroom, etc.) and having authority over them personally; and once coined, the phrase was imitated by other speakers.

of the sites I've visited I like the one mouser posted best - in spite of my former objections.
Today post is good . . . well, not necessarily good news, but informative:
http://bravenewclima...h-summary/#more-4112

in the comments the other day someone said (and I agree, and, it seems to be the route he's going):
At this point then what I at least would regard as the smartest commentary would concentrate on just telling us the parameters of the possible: What’s the best possible theoretical outcome, and what’s the worst?

Now *that’s* something that would seem to have some credibility. In my opinion at least everything else has just been proven to pretty much be baloney, within hours if not minutes.

(This said, still gotta say I love this site and have great respect for the host and the great majority of commentators. I have no problem with speculation; it’s over-confidence in projections that make me wince.)

How does the program calculate time since reboot?  The elapsed time shown may be correct for my laptop if we're talking about user-initiated reboot; but Windows OS automatically rebooted my machine sometime in the past two days, after updates were downloaded and installed...

I think the install date is off there too :tellme:
IIRC others had problems getting correct calculations for time since last reboot

the IAEA say that
(15 March 2011, 03:35 CET)

Japanese authorities yesterday reported to the IAEA at 21:05 CET that the reactors Units 1, 2 and 3 of the Fukushima Daini nuclear power plant are in cold shutdown status. This means that the pressure of the water coolant is at around atmospheric level and the temperature is below 100 degrees Celsius. Under these conditions, the reactors are considered to be safely under control.

but a later report from them says:
(15 March 2011, 06:15 CET)

Japanese authorities informed the IAEA that there has been an explosion at the Unit 2 reactor at the Fukushima Daiichi plant. The explosion occurred at around 06:20 on 15 March local Japan time.

there is a bit more info about that on the WNN site:
http://www.world-nuc...iichi_2_1503111.html
7032
Seems like not all experts agree though that the control rods were really put back in to stop the nuclear chain reaction. Or is that confirmed?
I missed that -
anything I've read above says that this was done.

Ironically part of the "problem" here seems to be the mainstream news reporting - of which I've heard next to none (I dont have a telly and dont read newspapers or online equivalents). The first two days I listened a lot to the radio here which reported quite honestly - saying they just didnt know. They did have people from greenpeace interviewed but also non-political experts.
I also think it's clear I'm not a fan of nuclear power, but I'm looking for news where people are NOT reacting against anything, or dont have an obvious agenda, be it for or against.

News is still mixed from those sources above, btw.

[edit] looking back over the thread I see I was reacting [no puns intended btw] pretty strongly to the pro-nuclear 'stickers' on the site in my first post - there you go, I'm a good example of what I'm moaning about [/edit]
7033
There's so much speculation going on that it's probably best just wait and see - I've only been looking at the sites linked to from mouser's link, but the news from those sites is still mixed

14th 8:50PM (what timezone?)
At 8.50pm Tepco told NISA that it presumed some of the fuel rods were broken, based on radiation detected in the environment.

home site with most recent updates:
http://www.world-nuc...ews.org/default.aspx

the site mouser links to - here's the most recent updates/homepage:
http://bravenewclimate.com/
This site does seem dependable, but the pro-nuclear-agenda comments within the articles really bother me, e.g. "Please also take the time to read this: An informed public is key to acceptance of nuclear energy — it was never more relevant than now". This is not the time or the place for comments/articles like that. It really takes away from what the guy has to say...

here's an interesting read from someone living in Japan, about their highly evolved emergency responses:
http://www.kalzumeus...he-japan-earthquake/
(posted by Renegade on FB)

EDIT/
Another, the International Atomic Energy Agency; 14 March, 15:35 CET (also linked from bravenewclimate)
http://www.iaea.org/...tsunamiupdate01.html
Japanese authorities have reported to the IAEA that Fukushima Daiichi Unit 2 has experienced decreasing coolant levels in the reactor core. Officials have begun to inject sea water into the reactor to maintain cooling of the reactor core.

Sea water injections into Units 1 and 3 were interrupted yesterday due to a low level in a sea water supply reservoir, but sea water injections have now been restored at both units.

On the one hand it IS calming -
journalists here have been pretty open about not having a clue, so it's good to read about what IS happening.

But it makes me angry too:
1)
The earthquake destroyed the external power supply of the nuclear reactor. [...]
Things were going well for an hour. One set of multiple sets of emergency Diesel power generators kicked in and provided the electricity that was needed. Then the Tsunami came, much bigger than people had expected when building the power plant (see above, factor 7 [earthquake 7 times stronger then what the power plant was built for]). The tsunami took out all multiple sets of backup Diesel generators.

When designing a nuclear power plant, engineers follow a philosophy called “Defense of Depth”. That means that you first build everything to withstand the worst catastrophe you can imagine, and then design the plant in such a way that it can still handle one system failure (that you thought could never happen) after the other. A tsunami taking out all backup power in one swift strike is such a scenario.
(my emphasis and additional text in square brackets)
-
the builders dont seem to have had much of an imagination -
how about the plant should never have been in an earthquake zone where one of the earth's plates is moving under another at the rate of 8 centimetres per year - I heard on the radio (also from a journalist, so...) that that is the most movement that way anywhere in the world.

2) the first illustration does not equate with what is said in the text - if the author want to inspire confidence, this is not a helpful start (I know this is nit-picking - but I'm an illustrator, these things bother me :p)

3) a smiley "Nuclear Power / Yes Please" like one of the anti-nuclear stickers on the left-hand-side of the page - this is crass, really crass in this situation. (And I would add to that: if I go to a site that's plastered with anti-nuclear "stickers" - I would also not feel that I'm in a place where I can trust the info for objectivity.) BTW I realise this paper is simply quoted there.

Have you tried it with default classic? - I can test it again next weekend**

2) no, didnt see progress bars working at any stage

3) computer was laptop without a lot of memory (by Win.7 standards) - 2GB I think. I'll have to ask them & get back to you with more details. (Scratch that**)

** It was someone elses machine, and they wouldnt be able to tell me any of this info - I probably wont see them till next weekend. I can check out the theme then in more detail as well.

« Last post by tomos on March 12, 2011, 03:36 PM »
I hope you wont be cursing me for these bug reports Renegade  :)

I was helping someone move their photos to a new computer today. Their older pc has a maze of duplicated folders and files - there seemed to be 10 copies of one batch of images in the one folder :tellme:
Everything was already copied onto an external drive.

So I installed your app on the new laptop:
Windows 7 64 bit; classic theme (I believe it's uptodate but dont know if SP1 installed)

I compared the pics on the external drive.

Some minor problems:

1) when I selected the folder in the lower pane, the selected folder in the upper pane was no longer readable - ie, text and highlighted background were both dark blue, if I then clicked on the folder in the upper half, it became readable - but the lower one was then unreadable.

2) when it was checking for duplicates, there was no indication it was working, until I actually clicked (anywhere) on the programme window - then the hour-glass showed.

3) eventually I had to compare the "my pictures" folder with itself. (I used the fast setting.) I'm not sure how many exactly, but there was over two thousand loose images in there and a few folders**. It showed the warning message, I clicked okay, but basically it seized up after that - when I clicked (anywhere) on the window it said no response (or whatever it says - "keine rückmeldung") in the titlebar. So eventually I closed it down - it did close normally, I didnt have to kill it. I tried a few times but it was definitely too much for it...

** I presume contents of subfolders are NOT looked into?

can it batch process files of varying formats (in one go)?

Didn't seem to like doing that. Seemed okay with a mix of .png and .jpg which seems to me to be an unlikely combination of candidates for reduction.

Also I'll cross post this about "RIOT" - available as standalone app or as plugin for Irfnaview xnview or gimp - with the warning here (same thread as below- earlier post), that the install version comes with Open Candy - but apparently there is also a portable version.

IMO the killer feature of RIOT is its "Batch optimizer" which can compress large numbers of jpegs to a pre-determined file size. Since different images compress to varying degrees, I never got much satisfaction with compressing to a quality level of 80% (just for example). With "compress to size" in batch mode, I don't get the significant under-sizing that I used to get at a straight quality %.

Interestingly, XnView appears to do this type of batch optimizing for JPEG-2000, but not regular ole JPEG.

So for me, I guess my point is RIOT is a major time saver. 8)

Sure, we have the Prius, but it's mostly a gimmick.  They put that out there for the people who make an extra effort to save the environment.

Don't you mean it's for people that want to make a show of pretending to save the environment?

I've never even heard of them before, but at 70+ miles per gallon according to wikipedia, and petrol being about 6 euro per gallon here, I'd be willing to make some sacrafices (are they really that slow to take off though lol)

« Last post by tomos on March 11, 2011, 02:14 PM »
Thanks for that Chris

I have used the site http://www.lipsum.com/ to generate Lorem Ipsum text. You can generate text there by number of paragraphs, words, bytes, or lists (not sure how lists works). It doesnt appear to have any relationship though with your sourceforge app. It's worth a look for a read about the history of usage, along with various translations etc.

What . . .
Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
Apparently it's from a book by Cicero,
and talks about "this mistaken idea of denouncing pleasure and praising pain" but also knocks people who are "so beguiled and demoralized by the charms of pleasure of the moment, so blinded by desire, that they cannot foresee the pain and trouble that are bound to ensue".

Great fun :D

I wasnt sure what the idea was till I read the original request:

I would like to have a program that brings some randomness to my life. It seems rather simple and useful for others too.
This application helps to do something in random order like watching episodes of a film, reading periodical comic strips or accomplishing a to-do-list of actions.

What it should do:

1. Preferable output format is a text file with meaningful name chosen by the user. The file is saved in the application folder. Application should ask for overwriting the file.
Minimum: it contains random numbers, each on the new line.
Maximum: it can contain random numbers in several aligned columns (for convenience, number of columns chosen by user)

2. The program should produce randomness in several formats with range entered by user.
Minimum:
- completely random (integer numbers from A to B)
- random sequence (integer numbers from A to B in mixed order, including all numbers from A to B, no duplicates)
Maximum:
- random date sequence (days from A to B in mixed order, including all days from A to B, no duplicates)
- random date sequence with days of week filter (for example, only Mondays and Wednesdays)

3. There should be an option to leave space for completion marks at the left of the random numbers. I think a nice variant will be a space between square braces:
[X] 27
[X] 4
[ ] 14
[ ] 12

3) a minor bug:
in the Chart Builder, when typing in a name for a custom colour, I pressed the delete key to delete some text and I got a "Delete colors..." dialogue:
"Are you sure you want to delete the 0 selected color(s) in this chart?"

4) suggestion/request:
again in the Chart Builder: it would be nice if the "Chart Name" as filled in would automatically be transferred to the File Name in the save dialogue.

Once again I come up with an answer (not necessarily the best one, but an answer nevertheless) right after posting my question.  This happens to me exactly 92.89% of the time (yes I've kept track  ;) ), even if I've waited a long time to ask my question.  So it turns out the best way for me to figure something out is to ask here and then feel a bit foolish when an answer only comes to me afterward.

Does this happen to anyone else?  Is there a name for this phenomenon?

That's about par for me too :D - maybe it's called thinking outside the head

PS you probably know this one too -
you can alt+drag to create a shortcut as well
