« Last post by mouser on October 14, 2014, 11:06 PM »
Hi adealey, and welcome to the site!

And thank you for your kind words about TapTap -- it's rare that i hear from users of it -- perhaps because it's rare that people use it  :P

I'm away from home for a few days but i will try to add the feature when i get back!

LaunchBar Commander / Re: How to copy\paste a node?
« Last post by mouser on October 13, 2014, 06:06 PM »
Copy it as normal with Ctrl+C but then to paste it, select a PARENT node that can hold the pasted node as a child, then Ctrl+V -- that should work.

We welcome all apps -- however I have bad news for you regarding receiving donations -- it's very rare to receive donations and they will be small.  that's just the reality of it.  if money is important you should try selling your software as shareware or making mobile apps that can be charged for in the store.
donationware will bring you appreciation and encouragement and interesting friends and users.  we love donationware here and we try to all support it, but the reality is that there is very very little you will receive in donations.

You can ask here if you want. Not sure I understand your question "What will happen to the other my written pieces of software?" -- can you explain?

New beta is up that is smarter about switching to the object mode of the saved preset; fixed a few bugs related to saving and loading object presets.

Thank you for taking the time to report -- it makes some sense that it could have been caused by antivirus.

I note that Shades, in the first reply to your first post, did include in his post these wise words:
"Changing anti-virus software might help as well."

I myself have experienced Blue Screens of Death caused by an antivirus tool which I otherwise was quite happy with.  I suppose it's always good to be suspicious of these very low-level tools that hook into the underlying file system and intercept all file access..

Upon selecting, the corresponding object button will highlight and offer its settings.
good idea, i will add it.

It would help to access object selection mode with a key shortcut
good idea, i will add a hotkey to toggle in and out of object selection mode.

New beta uploaded;  this version only saves the currently selected tool settings in the preset file.  If you leave object mode or just get out of a specific object tool mode, it will save all.  You will get a hint about this in the Save dialog.
This should make it considerably easier to work with object tool presets.

Two other items to note:
  • The Tool Preset menu, built from filenames, is sorted.  You can use this to help you arrange the menu in the order you want.
  • In the More Interface Options tab, you can choose to show the Object Presets menu on the root main menu (instead of a submenu of the Objects menu); this may be useful for those of you who will be switching presets frequently.

Let me know how it works for you.

Maybe I missed something and you had other advantages in mind that I fail to see? My expectations are primed by other software, which led to a certain workflow over the years. Always ready to ditch the old ways, so if you found a more efficient workflow, please explain.

Well, I can envision rare cases where you want to save whole sets of object tool settings at once, BUT no, you didn't miss anything -- it would be better if the program let you choose which single object tool settings to save in the file at the time of saving, so you could choose without having to edit the manually edit the file.  Or I'll just make it so, if you are on a specific tool panel, it will only save that tool settings, but if the tool panel is closed, it will save all.

I will try to add this asap.

As far as more than one entry in a single file and custom separators -- that won't be possible the way i've done it.

Funny question since once of the features i had on my list to bump it to v5 was saving+loading object presets..  I'll have to check my todo list for any other major features planned.

Sometimes I try to only advance a major version when it heralds a bunch of big new features.. But occasionally I'll just look at the features added since last major version and decide it's time for a major version bump.  In other words, I don't have a well defined rationale for when to increase major version numbers -- other than the general idea that Version X+1 should have a ton of stuff that version X does not.

Early beta preview of version that can save and load object preset settings: here (or portable).  See Objects menu.

How to use the new feature:
  • You can save your object panel settings (line, arrow, highlight, textmemo, etc.) to files.
  • Once you do they will appear in the Object-> Object Presets submenu.
  • To apply previously saved settings to one or more EXISTING obejcts, select the objects (in object mode), and THEN load the previously saved object settings from the submenu.
  • To load previously saved settings for subsequent object creation, just ensure you have no objects selected and then choose the previously saved object settings from the submenu.
  • The object settings files are just text files, you can edit and delete them manually.
  • Advanced users: If you want to make object settings files that only affect certain properties (for example arrow properties) without affecting other tools, just edit the files in a text editor to remove the properties you want to leave untouched.

Let me know how it works for you.

Not a bad idea -- though I will note it already does something like this -- it shows on the statusbar what kind of copy has just been performed.

If you downloaded 4.9.1 before 2pm forum time 10/10/14, you might want to redownload.

Additionally, I could use some advice about something.  I have added a new option to let user choose how Ctrl+C works.

Screenshot - 10_10_2014 , 1_58_39 PM.png

By default, and in past versions, hitting Ctrl+C had a different effect depending on the context.  If you were working with an image and had nothing selected, it would copy the entire image to the clipboard (as a bitmap).
But if you had a region selected, it would copy just that region to the clipboard; if you had an object selected in object editing mode, it would copy just that object to the clipboard; if you selected a file on the left hand side, it would copy the FILE object to the clipboard.

The new option for Ctrl+C tells it to always copy the full image to the clipboard no matter what context.  You can still copy a selected region or object by using the Edit menu (or Clipboard toolbar button).

SO.. my question is, should i make the new option for control+C (always copy full image) the DEFAULT?  I know a few people have posted before about being confused at Ctrl+C behavior, so this might be the least confusing option.

Thoughts?

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: Moving clips within folders
« Last post by mouser on October 10, 2014, 11:06 AM »
These are all good questions..

First let me explain the basic approach of CHS:

  • Every clip has one and only one group that it lives in.  Let's call this the "home" group of the clip.  In your example above, your clip's home group is "Stuff1".

There are two scenarios where a clip will APPEAR in other groups:

  • First -- by default when you click on a group that has child subgroups, CHS will show clips in the selected parent group BUT ALSO SHOW IN GRAY all clips in all child groups.  This is by design.
  • Second -- CHS lets you create "virtual" groups using sql database statements, that can show certain clips from any other group.  By default CHS comes with a few such virtual groups (such as the Favorites group, which will show clips in any other group that have the Favorite? column checkbox set, and the URL group which will show clips from any group that have http:// in them).

Any action you perform on clips that are shown in these other (virtual or parent) groups, will effect the original group -- whether that's deleting it or moving it.  There is only ever one copy of the clip. You cannot have a clip live in two real groups at the same time.

With all that said, let's answer your questions specifically:

Question 1: Is it possible to have "Clip1" only seen in the "All/Stuff1" folder (removed from the "All" folder), or is it the nature of the program to show *All* clips in the "All" folder?

Yes, if you disable the default feature where CHS shows the contents of child groups when you click on a parent group (uncheck the first option here):
Screenshot - 10_10_2014 , 11_01_30 AM.png

Question 2: How do I remove "Clip1" from the "All/Stuff1" while leaving "Clip1" in the "All" folder?

Select the All/Suff1 group, then drag your clip into the All group.

Question 3: How do I have a clip available in multiple folders, as in this example case, in both the "All/Stuff1" folder, and the "All/Stuff2" folder?

Cannot be done.  The best you could create a virtual group using sql statement that select from both groups. For example, you could put info in the Keywords column of clips and then make a virtual group that showed all clips in any groups with certain keywords.

Ah.. yes I hadn't anticipated the use of DcUpdater in portable installs.  I'm going to have to cogitate on this one a bit.. The best advice for now is to uninstall DcUpdater if you are using portable installs.  The new versions of my tools don't need DcUpdater to check for updates, they will check and report when updates are available even without it.  The only thing DcUpdater really buys you is that it will automatically download and run the new installer, wheras without it you are just taking to the website.

v4.9.1 - October 10, 2014
  • [Feature] You can now control what happens when you hit Ctrl+C (see More Interface Options tab); previously it always did a context-sensitive copy-to-clipboard, copying currently selected region or object if there was one; you can now configure this to always copy whole image to clipboard.
  • [Feature] Copy-to-clipboard menus now show a more informative context-sensitive caption and include an additional item for copying whole image, in addition to copying selected region or object.
  • [Feature] Better copy-to-clipboard behavior.
  • [BugFix] Selected region copy was causing some issues for some users, a Range Check Error [thanks TimB!]
  • [BugFix] When option to auto add caption to printouts is enabled, it was removing any user-created caption at time of printing.
