This is definitely being sent to my mother! But I'm afraid I'll need to teach her how to follow a flowchart.
Give her that: http://xkcd.com/518/

Let's be honest, these aren't exactly assembly hall conventions, and it's usually just one or two people getting together.

I manage to get to a one person DC get-together nearly every day!

I'm left wondering what it's like those days you don't manage to get to a one-person DC get-together.  :-\

Thanks for the newsletter mouser! I haven't been as active on DC the past couple of months, so the links in this one are pretty much the only topics I've seen. It's nice to stay connected through the newsletter.

My family used an index card system. It was a bit more complex than yours.

The cards were color coded for how often they needed to be done: daily, weekly, monthly, and perhaps even bi-monthly, yearly, and other time intervals. The card tray then had dividers for each day, week, month, etc. I don't remember exactly what these dividers were. 1-31 (one for each potential day of the month) should be enough if you organize your chores to no larger than 1 month intervals.

Then each day you grab the cards from the current day, do the chore, and then file them back in to the next appropriate time they need to be done. It's really efficient and works well, if you keep up on it.

I've been thinking about this index card system a lot lately and I've been wanting a todo list type program that was organized this way. Then again, it's probably only really effective if you've got the physical cards to touch and feel and get out and put back in.

Crapware is in the eye of the beholder, apparently.

Seemingly respectable software now tries to bundle all sorts of crapware. Have you tried installing Flash recently? They try to sneak the Google Toolbar on you.

Anyone tried installing iTunes or Quicktime in the past decade? They bundle each other.

Anyone tried installing Java? I think it tries to bundle Yahoo! Toolbar or OpenOffice or both.

Sounds like a fantastic idea, but what the bleep do I know?

Cute story, but I doubt that's what they think, since dogs can see very well during nighttime.

I think the author of the article did more anthropomorphizing of the dog when he decided that's what the dog was thinking than when he thought the dog would have difficulty adapting.

Living Room / Re: Google Voice!
« Last post by Deozaan on July 16, 2009, 02:13 AM »
I called from my wife's phone to try out the "send to voicemail, but eavesdrop on the message" feature. It didn't work. For some reason the call hung up on me, but still allowed me to leave a message from my wife's phone, so I decided to test how well the transcription worked.

This is what I said:

"Hi. This is a test voicemail message to myself. Let's see if it can transcribe properly. Alright, goodbye."

This is what it transcribed:

"hi ryan this is a test voicemail message to my cell let's see if we can transcribe properly alright goodbye"

Okay, so it's not perfect. It somehow thought my "hi" was "hi ryan" (I guess I did draw out the word, "Hiiii") but the cool thing is that it highlighted the parts it wasn't sure about, and each transcript allows you to give feedback on whether or not the transcription was useful.

I also got a notification from the Google Voice app for my G1 that told me I had a voicemail, which allowed me to read the transcript and listen to the voicemail. Cool stuff.

I'm going to bed. I'll play with it more over the next few days.

Living Room / Google Voice!
« Last post by Deozaan on July 16, 2009, 02:05 AM »
I just received an e-mail this evening inviting me to try out Google Voice (USA Only for now). I'd never heard of it until I received the invitation and I'm not even sure how I got signed up to be invited. I wasn't invited by any specific person.

So what is Google Voice? To be honest, I'm still not entirely sure. They gave me a free local phone number that anybody can call (and it was activated immediately). I can set it up to forward to any of my "real" phone numbers. When I signed up, I started out with a voicemail in my inbox, which was automatically transcribed for me:

Welcome to Google Voice! Google Voice gives you a single phone number that rings all your phones, saves your voicemail online, and transcribes your voicemail to text. Other cool features include the ability to listen in on messages while they are being left and the ability to make low cost international calls. To start enjoying Google Voice, just give out your Google Voice number. You can record custom greetings for your favorite callers or block annoying callers by marking them as SPAM. Just click on the settings link at the top of your inbox. We hope you enjoy Google Voice.

Here are a few things I think sound cool about the service: Since I already have a Google Android phone (G1) all my contacts in my phone are in my Gmail and in my Google Voice account. Also, there's an application for the Android phones so that you can have the mobile phone use Google Voice for all calls, international calls only, or no calls. And I can put a call widget online:

Call Widgets can be put on any web page, and allow people to call from that web page. When somebody clicks on the widget, we call them and connect them to you. Your number is always kept private. You can create multiple call widgets and have different settings for each of them.

The about page says that Google Voice invitations are only being sent out to users of Google GrandCentral, but I've never heard of that until today. Maybe I was invited because I'm using a G1? Or maybe I signed up for something several months ago and simply forgot entirely about it? I don't know. But Google Voice seems interesting, so I'm going to start using it and see how it goes.

General Software Discussion / Google Chrome: Time for a Second Chance?
« Last post by Deozaan on July 14, 2009, 08:35 PM »
Back when Google Chrome launched, I downloaded the beta, played with it for a few minutes and promptly uninstalled it. Dismissing it as pointless and redundant (not to mention not nearly as good as Firefox).

Recently I found out my brother uses Chrome and I asked him why and he mentioned a couple of things that got me interested in trying it again: It launches faster than Firefox and each tab runs in its own process so if one tab crashes it doesn't bring down the entire browser.

Has anyone else been using it for a while now? What do you think about it?

I noticed it doesn't have (true) extensions and thus AdBlock, so it's annoying to have ads showing up on websites I've never seen them on before, but other than that, what's the general consensus for people who have been giving it a try?

Living Room / Re: What does this laptop key do?
« Last post by Deozaan on July 07, 2009, 03:10 PM »
hm, I turned the brightness up to max and pushed it, but it didn't change the brightness, I will see if it makes the computer go to sleep after a minute
edit: I dunno, it doesn't seem to do anything on mine

The button on my netbook actually looks different than the one in your picture. I think my wife's laptop (also from Dell) has a button like yours and it doesn't do anything either. But we've done a full wipe and reinstall on her machine since she got it.

I luv AHK & have several scripts running consistently - but it just plain sucks when it comes to programming a GUI.
-r0bertdenir0 (June 18, 2009, 06:42 AM)

I admit I don't know what it takes to make a GUI in AHK, but Skwire's Trout is a great example of the good GUI capabilities of AHK.

I didn't know AHK could do GUIs until I gave Trout a try.

I read about this game just this morning. The article was pointing out that while the game costs only $10 the game is based on micro-transactions if you want to have access to everything and the micro-transactions cost more than the game itself ($12 if you buy them all).

That's true. The first game, My Life as a King, did the same thing. It was $10 for the base game and then $1-$3 for additional content (each). Some of it (costumes) doesn't affect the game at all, but there are those things which make a big difference, such as additional races and new buildings.

I imagine there will be similar DLC in My Life as a Dark Lord.

I've got some suggestions for you, Skwire, if you want to polish it up a bit.

No new features, just polishing what you already have.

I have a feature request for the next version: Correct the spelling of corral.
