Living Room / Re: Building a Quiet PC

there's a small piece of hardware available that reduces the fanspeed based on the temperature of the passing airflow
not a good idea, since I've got a passively cooled GPU - I need the airflow :)
My GPU and GFX-card are passively cooled too - no problem :)

I don't have time right now to read the complete article, but it surely is amazing what you can do to silence your PC! I now virtually have to stop breathing to hear mine and I can only recommend to invest in silence than always in the fastest, newest PC.

I think the noisiest part of my case are the two 120mm casefans - but that's a steady, low-pitch hum, so it doesn't annoy me
Here's what you can do:
- there's a small piece of hardware available that reduces the fanspeed based on the temperature of the passing airflow
- there are special silent fans available where you only hear the airflow, not the actual fan
 :-*

The harddrive-rotation-induced resonance is the most annoying part, since it's a "cyclic" sound.
I highly suggest some decoupling device (and of course the quiet Samsung HDs), I rarely hear my HDs anymore.

I considered these devices for a while (didn't buy any).
Thanks, I'll check out the details and compare it with others.

It's beyond my understanding though why they sell it for $299.95 and only offer 32MB capacity!

Living Room / dictaphone needed - any suggestions?
« Last post by brotherS on November 13, 2006, 01:20 PM »
Hi,

I'm planning on doing interviews for a project and need some kind of dictaphone for that task. I saw some for about 20 bucks at ebay, but doubt that that would be a good buy.

Do you have any experience with such hardware? What would you recommend? The interviews will be person-to-person, inside of rooms, so I don't think I need external microphones and stuff - the smaller the better. I think something that will let me record directly to mp3 files would be best.

Oh, and it shouldn't look extremely cheap if possible :)

I'm still having this strange problem - DimSaver dims for a split-second, then undims, and only after some more time THEN really dims.

Also, when I'm having Faststone Image Viewer display an image when DimSaver kicks in, the cursor will be moved to the 0,0 position on the screen

I'd be extremely delighted if this could be fixed - or if someone would send me an older version of DimSaver to test this behavior, since I'm pretty sure older versions didn't have this problem.

I also vaguely remember a similar thread, like "what are the best programs you use?" - I can't find it, maybe someone could post the URL to it here?

@jgpaiva: the program names you listed look very miscroscopic in that font in my IE :)

I get lots of e-mails and most of them are not junk anymore (good anti-spam filters). However, many of them are duplicates
I'm afraid this task is far too much for a coding snack. I suggest Google Mail: when I get duplicate emails, Google Mail groups them together as one, hinting with "(n)" (where n is the number of duplicates) how many duplicates were grouped.

Living Room / Productivity killer: Line Rider (Flash game)
« Last post by brotherS on October 27, 2006, 11:39 AM »
What crude line-art flash game is getting more search hits on Google than Kim Jong Il? It's called Line Rider

Part Jackass stunt, part physics lesson, Line Rider encourages users to "draw" their own ramps, hills, and slopes with a pencil tool, then sends a virtual sledder (wearing a red scarf) along the route until he swoops, swerves and crashes. Build an elaborate enough course and you'll feel like a little kid playing in the snow again, zooming downhill, popping up in the air, wiping out on a ramp jump a la Evel Knievel.

It's fun!

Living Room / Want to save gasoline? Lose some weight.
« Last post by brotherS on October 26, 2006, 04:10 PM »
Want to spend less at the pump? Lose some weight. That's the implication of a new study that says Americans are burning nearly 1 billion more gallons of gasoline each year than they did in 1960 because of their expanding waistlines. Simply put, more weight in the car means lower gas mileage.

Using recent gas prices of $2.20 a gallon, that translates to about $2.2 billion more spent on gas each year.

True! Spam is probably my #1 irritant with computers today. Not that I have to deal with a ton of it necessarily as I have decent spam filters, but I do have to review their work, and my customers complain about it a fair bit.
Google Mail has optimized its filters pretty good, hardly anything is labeled wrong. I now only check the spam folder every 10 days or so, the amount of false positives is pretty damn low!

It's very frustrating having to say you can't really do something about it.
You just need email addresses like [email protected] ;)

Most sites I stumbled upon didn't even offer something to sell. If they should add 'paid for' sites and mark them as such, I'd have no problem with that.

General Software Discussion / Re: Living without AutoHotkey - possible?
« Last post by brotherS on October 24, 2006, 07:39 AM »
I recently visited some guy and by connecting my USB stick to his notebook, I showed him the power of AutoHotkey (and other stuff, including this site, which I of course opened with an AHK string :D).

He was quite surprised what's possible since he never heard of AHK before. I bet many more users would use it if they knew how it could alleviate their pain...

Great article, great site! Since it's a long article, I used Zap Reader (https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=4869.0).

Btw, I subscribe to the FastCompany (paper) magazine, I like the content and the style!
