But the author of the site doesn't visit the official Facebook page :-/

And he doesn't really need to. If you can't bring mouser to Facebook, then bring Facebook to mouser.  ;)

The purpose of the Facebook page is more for us to use it to introduce others to the site, rather than for us to use it to keep up with what is going on here.

I have done what I can to make our Facebook page something worth sharing with your Facebook friends.

In addition to the Timeline posts, which mirror the forum threads that get pushed to our blog, there is a software page that I update annually, with almost 40 applications, perfect for sharing through a direct link:

https://www.facebook.../app_221460014534454

The live chat page will dump your friends directly into our IRC channel, where they can meet the bunch of us that hang out there, and MouserBot can do his magic, spitting forum links at them until they feel compelled to click & join.  :D

https://www.facebook.../app_205521576149308

So, take a look around and if you have any suggestions on what would make our Facebook page more useful and sharable, to help you introduce others to our little community here, please let me know.

With having shared the page with all of my Facebook friends, myself, I am proud to say that I have 50 Facebook friends that have liked the page. That's 50 people that have the potential to see something that catches their eye and could lead them to become members, here (since most aren't). I encourage anyone that enjoys what we have here to share it with everyone, either through direct links to content on our site, through sharing the page and our posts on Facebook, or following and retweeting us on Twitter.

When trying to connect to a PC on a network in Mac OS X Leopard (10.5) or later, the PC's icons are displayed as beige VGA monitors showing a Windows 3.1/9x Blue Screen of Death. The fact that they Apple chose to represent PCs such an outdated style of monitor and blue screen might have been part of the insult in itself.

TakeThat-Real Life - Television Tropes & Idioms

The equivalent on the Windows side, would have been to represent a Mac as this classic icon, in childish toy colors, like bubble gum pink.

Neopets is still online?!

I believe Viacom owns it, now.

The only thing missing is each post with a marquee having a different background colour or gradient. I miss Geocities  ;)

There is always Neopets. I think the kids there are still playing with HTML in their shops and CSS on their profiles...and they LOVE using animated gifs for page backgrounds and auto-playing midi files.  :P

Hmm, I need to take speed reading for that vid.  (Except for the Weeeee part.  I got that.)  :)

No, you just have to keep playing it over & over till you get it all.  :P

By then, the catchiest parts of it will be stuck in your head on an endless loop.  :D

General Software Discussion / Re: Wordpress and Hackers

While this is 110% solid advice, it's really hard for most people to do this. Very few people, and even few programmers, are qualified to actually determine security vulnerabilities. It's not easy.

You would not believe how many plugins have known security vulnerabilities, unpatched by their developer, and reported on the plugin's pages on wordpress.org. A little time researching the plugins you are using and any you are thinking of adding, can go far, even if you don't know any PHP.

I have uncovered a ton of them while auditing the security of other people's websites and looking for replacements for those vulnerable plugins.

For example, stay away from SMTP plugins, unless you want your email address and its password displayed in the generated HTML code of your site, in plain text, or stored in plain text in your database. They are all vulnerable. I have not found a single SMTP plugin yet, that isn't.

Do yourself a favor and either handle the sending of mail through your web host, or if that is disabled by your host, change hosting companies. If you are running your own server, don't be lazy. Set it up right, instead of funneling the mail sent from your site through your personal email account with a vulnerable plugin. And if you don't know how to set it up right, pay for hosting and save yourself the headaches.

And yes, I have reported them all to wordpress.org, and nothing has been done about them. They are all still available and still vulnerable.

Didn't know about this, very cool app  :)

Thank you.  :)

It was a spinoff from an idea that mouser had, that didn't quite get off the ground, where I was going to team up with another DC member, to offer managed hosting of secured Wordpress sites. They would have handled all the server/hosting related stuff and I would have handled all the Wordpress setup and maintenance stuff, among other things.

Since it didn't pan out as expected, I decided to take my part of it and offer it to the public, without the hosting portion. I kind of put it all on the back burner shortly after setting up that site, when I landed a fantastic long term freelance job that takes up a large chunk of my free time. (so don't promote it too heavily, please)

Unfortunately, in an era of HR departments and 'pre-screening' forms with checkboxes, if you don't have enough exact hits on a laundry list, you'll often never make it to that F2F interview where you can (hopefully) shine.

I believe it was a single keyword search (Zendesk) on oDesk which got me invited to interview with Sitepoint/Learnable, and it was everything I have ever done, which got me hired, much of which was not in any of my employment history. All that extra stuff I did for fun, while unemployed, made me a perfect fit for the job, more perfect than someone else with a lot more job experience. I didn't just shine in the interview, I glowed and showered sparks. I believe I may have been the first and last person interviewed for the position.

I got really lucky when a job, that seemed like it was made just for me, accidentally landed in my lap (I didn't apply for the job, they contacted me, first). Results like this would be hard to duplicate, either by myself or by any company with a position to fill, especially if they use a short checklist of keywords for their pre-screening.

...Maybe even add an automated redirector that sent anyone with more than 10 failed login attempts in a minute to the FBI's home page...

Are you kidding? I don't allow any more than 2 failed attempts in an hour before I block the IP.

By the way, anyone wanting their Wordpress site secured the right way and don't really have a clue how to do it, contact me to discuss it.

It will take me about 3-5 hours of work, total time.  I'll give you more and charge you less than anyone else on the internet.

My website isn't quite finished (still needs FAQ & About page), but I have hung up my shingle for it, complete with testimonials from some familiar faces.  :)

Personally, every Resume/CV I send out is tailored to that industry, which means I can also make sure that I only include jobs relevant to that sector on it.

Sometimes unrelated jobs in a different sector can demonstrate skills that would be valued in the sector you are applying for a job in.

For example, I was once a courier dispatcher (transportation industry). That doesn't seem all that related, if I were applying for a job in the banking industry, until you see the skills listed beneath it and see that I was required to demonstrate a fair amount of accounting skills.

So, my advice isn't to alter your employment history, but to list the skills beneath each job, that are relevant to the job to which you are applying.

If I were applying for an accounts receivable/payable job, they probably wouldn't care about my map reading skills from that courier job, but they would be interested in the daily AR/AP duties that job required. So, I would leave out the maps and list AR/AP.

And if I were applying for a job where I would be required to manage people, I would list how I supervised a team of about 150 drivers.

Every job requires a variety of skills, and it's those individual skills that are important (not the job title or sector), and nearly every job has at least 1 skill that will be relevant to whatever you are applying for. Sometimes it just requires a bit of thinking to see it, so you can list it.

and...if we are completely honest....that whole scenario sounds like a joke anyway...so it fits right in here haha!

Our high school is sooo secure, that a teacher can't even use the bathroom without it becoming international public knowledge.

Yup, that fits right in here.  :D
721
Oh yes...I can see the logic there.....

There is no logic in this security system. It was a knee jerk reaction and a chance for some profitable corruption, on the part of the local school board (a school board member has a relative that works for the company that was paid to set this whole thing up).

But enough about this basement worthy topic. Back to the jokes!
722
When her co-workers retrieved their phones to try to call her, they found that she had been frantically trying to call and text people to come help her.

Um... Why not call someone outside of the school to come help? :-\

This is the first school in the US with a security system like this.

Calling someone outside the school would be like calling someone in another country. What could they possibly do to help you?

Because getting into that school is like trying to break into the Pentagon, and getting out is like trying to escape from a maximum security prison, if you are not a student or employee with a key card. And even then, it's tough, as you can see from this incident.

Not even a parent can get in there. The school is on constant high security lock down.

I would hate to think what it would be like if they switched it to maximum security lock down (which is supposed to be done if there is a shooter in the school, which could only be an employee or student, with the way it's all set up), where they deactivate all cards so nobody can move from room to room, and nobody gets in or out, even if they have a card.

723
So, my town installed a really expensive, high tech security system in our local high school, with plans on expanding this to eventually include all the schools in the district. This was their knee jerk response to the Sandy Hook school shooting incident.

And in addition to the school district now being too broke to afford things like books for the kids, there have been some issues with the security system...like a teacher being trapped, locked in the bathroom for hours, and nobody knowing where she was.

locked-out-of-house[1].jpg

We’ve received reports that yesterday, a Belleville school teacher was locked in a bathroom at the High School due to the RFID system malfunctioning. Since school policy is to not allow the use of cell phones, no one knew where she was, or what happened to her until they went looking for her. Luckily, the teacher was carrying her purse, with her phone inside. When her co-workers retrieved their phones to try to call her, they found that she had been frantically trying to call and text people to come help her.

By the way, this is the same RFID system that the Board of Education pushed through as part of their controversial surveillance system, installed and managed by Clarity Technologies Group, at a cost of $2 million.

Even worse, when they actually discovered that she was locked in the bathroom, they could not open the door by swiping with their own RFID cards because the system had malfunctioned. Apparently someone had to come and pry open the door to finally get her out."

Yes, I feel bad for the teacher that was trapped, but this is still funny, in a sad sort of way.

Have you considered the idea that they don't want to attack you? And that they don't have any idea that they are doing it? That they could be the victim of malware?
725

  • 7-8 times more likely to be abused
  • more likely to end up homeless with nearly half becoming homeless at the age of 18
  • 3 times more likely to be put on psychotropic drugs
  • 7 times more likely to develop an eating disorder
  • more likely to have PTSD than veterans of war and less likely to recover from that PTSD
  • more likely to become pregnant as a teenager
  • 20% more likely to be arrested
  • 6 times more likely to die

It may be anecdotal, but I'll vouch for the truthfulness in this.  :(

But getting back to what qualifies parents to raise their kids, I have to ask what qualifies dogs to care for their own puppies and cats to care for their own kittens, for that matter?
