General Software Discussion / Re: Wanted ... Photo to DVD archiving tool
« Last post by Carol Haynes on November 16, 2005, 02:21 PM »
have a look at Imatch at http://www.photools.com/ if you're still in the market for some image management s/w

Hi tsaint,

I have been playing with Imatch over the last week and have given up on it.

The biggest problems I can see with the see witht he software are:

  • Not particularly intuitive interface
  • Manual isn't indexed and is massive to try and work through
  • Doesn't automatically display EXIF data for either of my digital cameras

I emailed the author who was quick to respond about the EXIF issue. He argues that Canon EXIF data isn't exif data but custom Canon data. Whilst this may be true all other packages I have tried that claim to support the camera manage to display the EXIF data as normal EXIF data. Add to that the same problem happens with the Kodak camera I have and it is not really much use to me compared to lots of other products.

He did point out that I can force the 'custom' data to be displayed, but it means editing a text file with dozens of  numbered fields manually, and I would have to do that for both cameras.

Strikes me if software claims to support a particular camera (in this case the Canon EOS Rebel/300D) then it should do the work - not expect me to do it all manually. Plus as I have two cameras I would have to set it up to display two lots of data which means the EXIF display would consist of 50% blank details which ever camera I use - a little irritating and not exactly friendly.

I have emailed back to explain why I am not going to use IMatch (at least not until some of the issues are sorted out).

Thanks for the idea though.

General Software Discussion / Re: RSS Reader?
« Last post by Carol Haynes on November 16, 2005, 02:06 PM »
Yes I got stung by this sell out. I set up the software and then a week later I when I tried to use it it wouldn't login because the authentication system had changed suring the buyout. I eventually got it working agan but I have lost confidence in it, and certainly don't want to pay a subscription for an essentially free service provided by other companies. I don't particularly like the free online service.

They do offer a plugin for Outlook and I tried it but quickly dumped it as I really don't want to be downloading and deleting hundreds of messages everyday.

I can't say I am using RSS extensively, but I find Maxthon's RSS reader facilities more than adequate and its free.

Just spotted this in the newsletter of www.experts-exchange.com:

It seems an "unofficial" Windows XP Service Pack has been made available on the Internet and anyone who installs it on their computers could be in trouble!

Here is one quote from Microsoft I have read:

"Anyone who installs this thinking they are getting SP3 (even as a preview) is being grossly mislead and is posing a significant potentially non-recoverable risk to their PC and data," wrote Mike Brannigan, an enterprise strategy and senior consultant at Microsoft.

SO BE WARNED!

...if you come across a link with a suggestion you download the software then AVOID it.

Microsoft has said that its priority is Windows Vista, the next major release of its operating system.

While the company does have plans to release XP SP3, it has not provided details on what the service pack will contain. Microsoft has issued a statement saying that the "content on the unofficial website(s) does not represent Microsoft's plans for Windows XP SP3."

Got a friend who uses Windows XP? Then why not send them a copy of this email...

Kind Regards

Living Room / WindowsSecrets : Another Good Read - and it is donation based
« Last post by Carol Haynes on November 16, 2005, 11:52 AM »
I have been meaning to mention this for a while but I subscribe to Windows Secrets, a regular newsletter by Brian Livingstone with regular contributors by people like Woody Leonard.

There is a free version of the newsletter and a subscription version (based on any donation).

the subscription version is a readlly good read. There is a really good debate in the current issue between Brian and Woody on the merits of dfragging your hard drive (Woody argues that with current drive technology defragging regularly has become unnecessary).

The current free version is available here and if you would like to make a donation and receive the subscribers version follow this link. Either way it is worth signing up for this.

OK I have been having a bit more of a look at the Windows App.

It really is just a photo album designer.

When you install it it creates a folder in My Documents called My Photo Albums. Each album you create generates a subfolder in there with formated versions of you files. The originals are not stored. You can publish these albumbs to JetPhoto web server where you set it up.

Links are stored to the original files (so you can find them easily again) but these are always stored as JPG files. My originals were BMP files so they were converted (without asking me). My original files were left in tac, but these aren't the originals according to JetPhoto - the JPG versions are, and they are stored as part of the album setup.

All this means that JetPhoto is good at what it does, but it isn't a photo management tool for Windows (to replace Picassa, ACDSee etc). It also generates lots of extra data on your disc if you generate webalbums.

Living Room / Re: Freebie quality GIF animations

Actually I think Animation factory have shot themselves in the foot a bit with this sample collection as they really aren't their best.

The website is great (if you are a member) as all the animations are rendered at different sizes, with white, black or transparent backgrounds. They even have an online tool to customize the graphic to your likeing before you download it.

Whilst they aren't pixel perfect (slightly 'cheap' point noted) they do what they aim to do well and have a HUGE library.

From my point of view one of the best things is the file size - it's all very well having beautiful pixel perfect animations but if they take 5 minutes to load on dial up ...

Here is an example of the range from their site to give an idea. The first picture is part of the download page for one graphic, the second is a sample from the online editing/customisation utility, and then the last two are the extremes of the downloads available (both on transparent backgrounds):

Hey you're right it looks great ....

I think I'll install the server software to have a play ... I'll give you the link when it is setup and you can drop by to have a look ...

actually you don't have to wait for me they have a demo site ... http://www.jetphotos...eb/default/index.php

Looks really slick if you want an easy to use photo gallery on your website.

OK I have had a bash ...

Here is a simple website - created entirely with JetPhoto ...

http://www.lairdswoo...eb/default/index.php

(the birdies are in my garden)

The windows app creates albums by dropping photo files on to the window but doesn't include the original files (at least not by default).

I haven't played with it long enough to see what it is capable of but I get the impression its primary purpose is to create nice looking websites with slide shows. To that end it succeeds very well and is really simple to use and configure.

To set up the server side stuff I simply uploaded the files to the server and pojnted my brower at the folder ... it then siad 'configured'. That was it!!!

The Windows software installed simply, and it is dead simple to build albums. Enter your ftp loging details and sync your albums with the website (single mouse click) and you have a photogallery ...

Can't see how it could possibly be simpler.

Presumably it isn't that easy to set this up as a multi user system? You could give other people an FTP account to upload photos but I suspect everytime someone syncs it will sync with their machine - they could however email their albums to you for inclusion.

A big difference here is that a single donation of any amount covers not just one, but several programs, AND from time to time gets you discounts on shareware.  If any of the software included is even modestly appealing, $20 or even more starts to look like a good deal.

I agree absolutely - but I was thinking back to the first time I visited the site (based on Fred Langa recommending Fin&Run).

The trouble with the internet is that you become suspicious of practically every site you visit - and most people's motivation.

Glad to say DC is a site the restores a bit of faith in the www 'community' - and individual motivations.

Animation Factory make really great animations (I have about 20 CDs of them).

To promote themselves they have teamed up with ULEAD to offer a free download of 300 animations.

See http://www.ulead.com...ctory/anifactory.htm to download them.

The main website is worth a visit too www.animationfactory.com

If you buy their CDs or register for their webservice their animations are Royalty free and you can use them on websites (so long as you don't host download pages of them).

Have fun ...

Latest update ... http://www.desktoppipeline.com/173602402

By the way the news today had Sony in trouble in the UK again (not sure about the rest of the world).

Apparently they are being taken to court by a group of UK Internet retailers because they now have a policy of charging internet retailers more for their goods than high street sellers to try and combat the lower web based prices. Web retailers are retaliating by taking charging them with unfair trading practices.

I think the "Boycott Sony" campaign has a lot of life in it - and Sony have really lost credibility big time !!!

General Software Discussion / Re: Free download - Rootkit analyzer
« Last post by Carol Haynes on November 15, 2005, 05:56 AM »
OK. I took the first entry in the output abouv and exported the whole key:

Here is the log entry:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{0461F6B6-066E-9BE4-35A30E37E302FE67}\{60F18D06-2547-D7B5-3F6FEAC167531534}\{03821BF4-A5A3-BF72-1BF7DBE36D239A74}*:
Description: Key name contains embedded nulls (*)
   Date:        01/11/2005 10:02
   Size:        0 bytes

and here is the exported key HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{0461F6B6-066E-9BE4-35A30E37E302FE67}:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{0461F6B6-066E-9BE4-35A30E37E302FE67}]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{0461F6B6-066E-9BE4-35A30E37E302FE67}\{60F18D06-2547-D7B5-3F6FEAC167531534}]

It is somewhat odd that the last leaf "{03821BF4-A5A3-BF72-1BF7DBE36D239A74}" doesn't appear in the exported RegFile at all!! Although it does appear in the registry editor. I have checked the permissions set on the key and they seem to be set to allow everyone on the system full control. It does however appear in red (in Resplendent Registry Manager) which means:

Why some registry keys in my registry appear in red ?
These are system critical keys which are normally only accessible from the System account.

Even more oddly the 'last leaf' appears twice (!!!) in Windows RegEdit ???? (see second graphic) and exports as:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{0461F6B6-066E-9BE4-35A30E37E302FE67}]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{0461F6B6-066E-9BE4-35A30E37E302FE67}\{60F18D06-2547-D7B5-3F6FEAC167531534}]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{0461F6B6-066E-9BE4-35A30E37E302FE67}\{60F18D06-2547-D7B5-3F6FEAC167531534}\{03821BF4-A5A3-BF72-1BF7DBE36D239A74}]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{0461F6B6-066E-9BE4-35A30E37E302FE67}\{60F18D06-2547-D7B5-3F6FEAC167531534}\{03821BF4-A5A3-BF72-1BF7DBE36D239A74}]

Just to check further I did a hex dump of the exported files (see graphics - sdump from Registrar RM, sdump3 from RegEdit).

The values following {03821BF4-A5A3-BF72-1BF7DBE36D239A74} seem to be ] and alternation OA OD which are just line feed, carriage return characters - but that may just be function of exporting to a reg file.

Is there any way to see a hex dump of a section of the registry?

the moment we have a nag that cannot be removed until you dontate, or limit features, then the program ceases to be freeware.

You could of course argue that the software on this sit is not freeware - it is donationware. I doubt there are very few people who are actually unable to donate 50 cents and you have made it clear that people who can't can have a free perpetual license if they email you. On that basis I see nothing wrong with an occasional nag screen at start up (say a couple of times a month). How about makiing a nag screen that is 'community related'? The site uses a cookie to maintain logged in status, how about lookng at the cookie to see the time of last visit and only make a popup if someone hasn't popped in to say hello in the last couple of weeks?

As a personal comment: I think the problem with donationware is knowing how much to give. If I give a couple of dallars I feel rather stingy, but if I start giving $15-20 I start thinking 'do I really need this program?' and as a newcomer to the site I also wondered 'is there a cheap commercial version' or a 'free' version with no expectation of a donation? Don't misunderstand I think donationwar is a great idea but it takes some adjustment in the mindset.

The other issue of course is that there is a lot of free software on the internet, and increasingly authors are beginning to ask for donations to cover their costs. Quite a few of these programs have been mentioned on this site, and I am sure a lot of us use them. However, it is difficult to give a donation to everybody as it all starts to mount up.

I'm a bit curious which components or whatever those null-char-embdeed CLSIDs are referring to, even if they probably aren't malicious or anything

Yes - trouble is how do you find out? If I use a registry editor they don't seem to show up (presumably there is an end of string marker at the end of the visible section)

Finished Programs / Re: Program closer

If they are specific processes you know are running it should be easy to write an AutoHotKey script to shut them down. Something like this should work for Outlook.exe

Process, wait, Outlook.exe, 1    ; Wait 1 second to see if Outlook.exe exists in the running processes list
NewPID = %ErrorLevel%           ; Save the value immediately since ErrorLevel is often changed.
if NewPID = 0
{
  MsgBox Outlook Wasn't running anyway
  exit
}

; Otherwise close all running instances of Outlook.exe
MsgBox All instances of Outlook will now be closed
Process, waitclose, Outlook.exe, 5   ; Allow Outlook 5 seconds to close
NewPID = %ErrorLevel%
if NewPID <> 0
MsgBox One or more instances of Outlook could not be closed
exit

I haven't actually tried this but it is a slightly modified example script from the AHK Help file

Quite correct ... the trouble I have with the sysinternals program is that the output seems almost inpenertable if you aren't an expert in the registry.

On my system it reports a couple of files are different, but I have no way of knowing what made them different or if they actually need to be different versions. They could for example have been updated by Microsoft Update since the last SysInternals update.

Yes, I have tried the sysinternals one, but I think the results are easier to interpret in this one.

How about some apps that are only available for download to members. Not the current ones, but perhaps as new ones come online they could be restricted (but heavily advertised) for a period of time.

Everyone can still get them for free if they can't afford it (just email Mouser and ask) but they are freely available to honorary and charter members ??

General Software Discussion / Free download - Rootkit analyzer

I'm just downloading this freebie. It will becaome part of a commercial release later on but is free at the moment.

Resplendence write some good stuff - I can really recommend their Registry Manager as a replacement to Regedit. It has excellent fast seach functions and registry bookmarking. It can also defrag your registry and backup/restore your entire registry amongsth lots of other features (like remote editing ...). There is also a free lit version to download.

Here is a screenshot of the RootKit Analyzer. It detects where NTKernal hooks havebeen intercepted and displays these 'hooks' with where they are linked to and the name of the software/program producer. Its a useful display, and far easier to interpret than other rootkit detectors I have seen. Definitely worth a look.
