I haven't tried the Riva encoder yet... I'm hesitant to get a shareware encoder

The "30 day trial" is the Producer, NOT the Riva Encoder which is Freeware.
Get it from Download.com C/Net.

I'm using Vista 64 , that's likely to have something to do with it...

The changelog does not mention anything on 64 bit at all since the first stable SUPER from july 21, 2005 - so I guess you may be right; SUPER is perhaps not ready for 64 bit

... Unless of course there's a "Prevent Encode button from closing program" check box somewhere.

Actually I was thinking about asking this question in my previous post, but didn't do so. I should have. HOW did you try to start the encoding? All you are allowed to do, besides doing the settings, is to Drag&Drop the file to be converted, and only then hit the Encode button. This is the only way. Did it happen like this? I am asking because I use SUPER and have never experienced what you have described.

Other than that, the only complain I have about SUPER, as I already have said, is the lack of precision in the sync' between picture and sound, when converting from flash to movie.

I've downloaded a bunch of music videos in flv format that look fine as-is in VLC Player's full-screen mode. ...

Yes, they play well in both VLC and in MPC, but I want to make them be a part of the Playlists in WMP and RealPlayer 10.5 as well, and that takes first to convert them to a video format. That is why I have been trying out these alternative "converting" metodes in the first place.

Thanks for the tip on 'no overlay'.

I *imagine* the main reson for this "non-converting" metode may very well be that the (music video) flash first was recorded as .avi / .mpeg or another video MUSIC format. And that the flash converting maybe primarly changed some video settings and not so much any audio settings??? But I really am guessing; I have no idea of the true reason.

Right now, as I write, Denmark is behind 0-3 against Sweden (european championship football qualification tournament), and they have only played for half an hour (30/90)!!
This is soo sad...  :(  Heyy!!!  1-3 Now!! NOW WE ARE COMING!!!   8)
[Edit]: 2-3 (61/90)  :)  [Edit2]: 3-3 (75/90)  ;D

[Edit3]: Total chock!!  29 seconds before end of game, a spectator ran into the court and tried to attacked the referee and actually grazed him. The rest of the match was cancelled and the result came within five minutes of "thinking": Denmark has lost the match, 0-3 !!!
 :o
 :(
In 1992 the European FairPlay prize in Football was not given to a footballer, but to the Danish spectators' union...
This is just sooo sad.  :( :( :(

reminds me of this thread here..

The link's conclusion in short is to
bypass the mobo ethernet port. I ripped my linksys ethernet card out of another computer...plugged through that one, and SUCCESS!

...

I wiped the old drivers (and firewall) and instead of installing them through the disc, I let windows find the driver itself, so no extra software was added. This seems like such an easy answer, but to not access ONE site because of drivers just didn't make any sense.

This is obviously not good(TM)

In order to understand what y'all are saying, this not-an-English-man (: being me) will from time to time need to ask for explanations, please. This "TM" suffix I have made bold in iphigenie's post , what does it say? Not what they taught me in school, I guess?

It is a bit quirky to set up (to me - I dont use 10% of its features cause I haven't found them yet...) ...

I had it for free - thank you, WiredPlane! - but I am glad I didn't pay for it. It will take me quite some time to figure out how to use this little app in a more effecient way than I so far have managed. I was forced to start out with disabling almost every hotkey, as some of them collided with other apps with a lot of hotkeys, so it is kind of a little nightmare to understand which hotkeys to use or not, and to understand what program is causing what.

However, I like two of the plugins a lot: 'Taskbar extender' and 'Useless Start Button'.
Actually these two plugins are all I use for now; so far I don't use Wirekeys itself at all..

To my surprise I just found a Flash To Video (avi, wmv or mpeg) converter that will keep the sync' between picture and sound: the $100 GeoVid Flash to Video Encoder PRO.

When it was a surprise it is not only because well estimated encoders like SUPER not will do this job properly, but also because I really couldn't think very high about the GeoVid app when I saw it open. The features and options are quite poor; you will not be impressed. But the result was actual a little impressive, and that should be what it is about, shouldn't it.

But A HUNDRED dollar??!! No; I am not going to buy this one!
- maybe I should try out the kid brother; a fifty dollar bargain...

... Probably what your viewing software is doing is simply taking whatever file is handed to it, and examining the contents to decide how to handle it...

... if I take a divx myvideo.avi, rename it to myvideo.avi.mpg, and burn that onto a DVD, my player will still not be able to play it because it doesn't have a divx codec in its firmware.
-CWuestefeld (May 30, 2007, 12:23 PM)

I have of course no idea why my media players will play these renamed flashes. All I know is that some of them will never play a flash file, but if I rename the flash to .avi or .mpeg or .wma - they will play the file. WMP will start out by saying "This is not a proper mpeg file - do you really want to play it?" and I will answer Yes, and WMP will play it without any problems at all, even though it maybe (most likely) still is a flash; only a renamed one.

I have so far only tested on music video flash files.

[Edit]: You are quite sure - but did you test it?

For so many years I have done what these companies made me think was the only and right way: downloaded a program and converted my flash files. Never did anyone tell me or even imply that this is totally unnesessary. Listen folks: I have just "converted" all my flash files into various video file formats: All you have to do is to rename the flash file. Periode!

Flash to AVI ? Rename the flash: .avi. That is it!
Flash to mpeg ? Rename the flash: .mpeg. You're done!
Flash to .wmv? Rename the file:  .wmv, and WMP will play it.

They are lying to us, totally distorting LYING.
Just rename the bloody thing!

Agnitum seeking Beta testers: http://www.agnitum.c...outpost/betatest.php

Beta Version
Outpost Firewall Pro 5.0 — Windows Vista-compatible, in primary beta

Here’s the long awaited news for Outpost fans. Agnitum presents its first firewall for Vista, which has reached a battle-hardened milestone in its development strategy. We concluded long ago that our customers didn’t need an underdone Internet security product, and users expressed suspicion of a raw operation system, so we worked to deliver a well-conceived, quality solution. It’s now high time you got to examine the results.

We encourage you to let us know what you think and help us construct the brand-new Outpost! Volunteer beta testers are more than welcome to help us improve all that can be improved in the first beta. To join the tester’s army, click: http://www.agnitum.c...outpost/betatest.php.

You probably want to know what’s new in the beta 1 version of Outpost Firewall Pro 5.0:

First, we’d like to remind you that the Vista-compatible product was in fact created from scratch. Porting of XP-firewall workouts was impossible due to objective technological reasons. This means that Outpost Firewall Pro 5.0 has a completely revised user interface and a number of improvements. Some of the latter are described below:

– Windows Vista support: As we’ve already mentioned and made clear, the new firewall is compatible with Windows Vista and equally suitable for x32 and x64 versions. Starting with this beta version, Outpost Firewall Pro 5.0 will support IPv6 protocol — a criterion on which the Windows Vista internal firewall bases its security pretensions, for instance.

– Proactive protection: upgraded, customized and even more effective!

– Strengthened self-protection: The Vista-compatible Outpost Firewall gets even harder to deactivate than its XP predecessor

– ‘Surfing safety’: Agnitum’s major concern and a separate functionality in the Outpost product line; now you can filter unwanted ads on any given web pages. The new beta caters to eradication of irritating adware, Active-X and other dangerous components.

Another important note: this primary beta version doesn’t contain an antispyware module. That will be added in later builds.

Users who love all-in-one solutions might also inquire: “What about the Vista-compatible Suite? When will it become available?” We expect to let you try the primary beta of Outpost Security Suite for Windows Vista later this summer. Don’t miss the news!

Well, you still might like a way to control the volume since it will only adjust the app's volume and not mess with your regular system/wav volume levels.

Nice feature; didn't think of that. Yes, please!

Found Deals and Discounts / Toshiba $100 rebate on stand-alone HD DVD players

I was looking for something quite different, but thought someone would like to know about this offer from Toshiba:

Toshiba Offers $100 Rebate on New HD DVD Players

Tags: Hardware, High-Def Retailing (all tags)

The HD DVD Promotions Group today announced that Toshiba will be offering a month-long $100 rebate on new HD DVD players, bringing the entry-level list price for a stand-alone HD DVD player to a record-low $299.

$100.gif

Beginning this Sunday (May 20th) and continuing until June 16th, consumers buying Toshiba's HD-A2 model player will receive an an instant, in-store rebate of $100. During the final week of the promotion (from June 10th through June 16th), Toshiba will extend the $100 rebate to any Toshiba HD DVD player, and will offer an additional $100 rebate to consumers purchasing both an HD DVD player and a 42 inch (or larger) Toshiba HDTV.

The HD DVD group says the rebate will be available across a wide range of retailers, including Best Buy, Circuit City, HHGregg and Amazon.com.

Consumers taking advantage of this Father's Day-timed rebate are also eligible to choose five free HD DVD titles (from a selection of fifteen), as part of a previously-announced promotion, which ends July 31, 2007: http://www.tacp.tosh...nline_Rebate_R08.pdf

This latest rebate offer comes in a particularly frenzied season for both HD DVD and Blu-ray, as both next-gen formats have bulked up their release slates leading into the summer.

The HD DVD group, which has slipped behind Blu-ray in overall disc sales since the start of 2007, has stepped up its marketing efforts in recent weeks, launching a national marketing and retail campaign anchored by the recent release of a theatrical trailer promoting the format, which has been spotted playing before such high profile titles as 'Spider-man 3.'

Is it possible to convert .FLV to .AVI (or any other normal PC video format), without loosing the synchronization between picture and sound? I think the various formats / converters are doing a very poor job on this. As an example Lynne & Tessa have so far lost the lip synchronization when their flash movies were converted to any format I knew of, no matter what converter I used.

 :tellme:

[Edit: Because of the link I added, I have just now realized that regarding the L&T flashes it is enough to rename from *.mpeg.flv to *.mpeg.
However, it is very seldom possible to do it this easy way.]
[2'nd Edit: confusing "flv" changed to "mpeg"]

Not all are having doubts about Vista or not:

40M Vista copies sold

Microsoft has sold nearly 40 million copies of Windows Vista so far, Bill Gates told a crowd of hardware developers Tuesday.

That's more than the total install base of Windows' largest competitors, Gates quipped as he began his keynote at the Windows Hardware and Engineering Conference.

"As of last week, we've (sold) nearly 40 million copies," Gates said. "That's twice as fast as the adoption of Windows XP, the last major release we had."

It wouldn't take much to break out the MPC functionality and build a quick GUI for it (if you're interested).

Most generous offer.

I cannot remember many hotkeys, but I would VERY much like you to add the basics:
Play, Pause, Stop, Next, Previous

- but because of programs installed but seldom used, I am having a hard time trying to figure out which hotkeys are free! Can you let the choices include the numerics (with NumLock disabled), please?

No volume, as I use Volumouse.
