So far I'm finding my wife's iPad quite nice, though I've not done anything other than play games...

I was shocked a bit when my Mac wouldn't recognize it, but my Windows box would. That was bizarre.

IMO, there really isn't much difference between this and the fact that you can usually easily recover "deleted" files from a hard drive, the Windows Recycle Bin, etc.

However... That is ONLY true when you don't want to recover the files. If you want them... well... that's quite a different story... :P ;D

Find And Run Robot / Re: how do I search imdb? using the built in alias
« Last post by Renegade on September 08, 2011, 06:27 AM »
The format is:

http://www.imdb.com/...ll&q=dirty+dozen

www.imdb.com/find?s=all&q=dirty+dozen

find?s=all&q=dirty+dozen

So, you type in:

find?s=all&q=<your+search+terms+separated+by+plus+signs>

Jaysus guys, calm down with the conspiracy theories

I'm not going on about any conspiracy. It's simple logic. (Like I said, don't infer anything about my belief or disbelief in global warming -- I'm not touching that one way or another as it's off-topic and heated.)

Security is inherently a messy issue as a large part of the problem is to stop slippery slopes, which admittedly, do tend to look like conspiracy theories.

So, good security prevents access to those paths that could, potentially, just maybe, lead to very dark places. Better safe than sorry?

Thanks for posting that. It's out for me though. GPL. :(

If anyone has a non-GPL suggestion, I'm all ears. I'm fine with LGPL, BSD, or pretty much anything else. Just not with viral licenses like the GPL. (Not that I'm against it -- it's just not for me.)

Governments and the corporations that fund them are doing everything they can to erase anonymity on the net. Not merely for the purpose of computer forensics and prosecution, but to sell you more stuff.

Both of those are VERY SCARY propositions.

For the first, you're basically 1 step away from prison as with the number of laws now, everyone is a "criminal", or can be turned into one with a few twisted words.

The second is just as sinister; how can regular people possibly hope to compete with extremely well funded think-tanks and propaganda machines that work day-in and day-out to shape people's thoughts? I don't people can. There's simply no way to resist when large companies/governments/organizations are doing research into exactly what makes people tick, and then turning it against them for their own benefit. These people market specifically to children with tactics like "the nag factor".

"Oh, people are free to choose..." BS. That's a black lie. People are NOT free to choose. That's an illusion.

Let me give a nice little and VERY controversial example...

Do you believe in global warming?

If you do, the chances are you've been bamboozled. Why? Because it's unlikely that you're an expert on the subject and unlikely that you have enough information to make an informed choice on whether to believe or not. Rather, you've been tricked into believing it through various means. Does this mean that you or me are idiots? No. It just means that we're human and are wired in certain ways that people are exploiting for their own means.

NOTE: I did NOT say anything about the truth or falsity of global warming. So please don't put any words in my mouth. What I AM saying is that the tactics used to convince you and me are not valid arguments in the logical sense. I am speaking purely about the tactics used, and not the subject matter -- the controversial nature of the content merely serves to illustrate the point better.

The same tactics are used in numerous different areas. Propaganda is a very well refined science, and it's only becoming more and more sophisticated.

I just found this:

http://pixelpipe.com/

It's not exactly what you're looking for, but it's perhaps better than nothing, and could work. They say they're not accepting new developers at the moment, but it can't hurt to try...

I really dont want to write a dozen different uploader wrappers for different services just for SC.  I'd much rather find a stanalone queing uploader that SC can hand off to.

Yeah... I kind of figured that. Sorry, but I don't know of any 1-stop image uploader. :(

The ones I mentioned above are wrappers, and don't require a lot of work, though they're still not trivial to get working.

I'd also be interested, so I'll be watching this thread.

Again, not free, but I've tried out Privacy.io, and it's pretty good. They don't keep logs and they allow port 25.

I don't know of any aggregated uploader components or SNS aggregation components, but if you want to look at the Flickr API, there are components for it that are very good.

I've used Flickr.NET and it's good:

http://flickrnet.codeplex.com/

I'm sure there are others. Flickr is nice to work with. They've got their s**t together from what I've seen.

The TwitPic API has components for it that can help as well. Some Twitter components are TweetSharp, Twitterizer, and TwitterVB. There are others as well. Again, from what I've seen, the Twitter-side of things have their s**t together. Very nice to work with.

If you want to upload to Facebook, beware. The Facebook API documentation is nothing short of

NFSW because I have nothing good to say about it
complete and total fucking horseshit with abso-fucking-lutely zero low level documentation and only some shitty fucking JavaScript API crappy examples. It just goes to show how entirely dis-fucking-organized...

Sigh... I need to stop there. You get the idea.

The Facebook API also tends to have breakage in places with little in the way of communication with developers to let them know about fixes or anything. Can we say, "let's be secretive like Apple?"

However, it's still worth looking at because if you find a decent component for the Facebook API, then uploading is pretty simple. (Logging out is the problem...)

For FTP, have you looked at INDY?

Many of the image upload sites have APIs, but I've not tried a lot of them and can't speak as to their sanity levels.

I know that doesn't really address what you're looking for, but perhaps it might help a little bit.

Kill me now. I'm surprised Steve Jobs hasn't filed copyright suits against these folks.
I really like those haircuts.

Makes for nice, clear, "bullet goes here" markings.

Bwahahaha~! ;D

(and I tried so hard not to say that) It would qualify as a retroactive sterilization.

Hahahaha~! ;D

What a load of wimps. If they really loved Apple so much they'd do the right thing and have the logo tattooed on their foreheads. Which would then work as a perfect sign meaning "do not waste time talking to me, I have nothing of value to say".

(As I type all this out on my iPad.)

Oh god... I'm going to pee my pants laughing~! ;D

As for renegade, i think we need to save him from the wrath of satan jobs. I knew he was talking in ren's ears about mac for quite some time. Let's pray for him  :D

Our Father, which art in in the kernel,
Hallowed be thy OS.
Thy browser come.
Thy will be done in office suites,
As it is in development toolchains.
Give us this RAM our daily memory.
And restore us our crashed disks,
As we AV cure them that try to infect us.
And lead us not into iTunes,
But deliver us from DRM.
For thine is the browser,
The OS, and the cloud,

For ever and ever.

Amen.

I bought my wife an iPad for her birthday in July. I looked into all the tablets and the iPad is simply that far out in front of the pack IMO. Also, I wanted Wifi only and I was NOT going to buy from a wireless company with a data plan.   8)

Jim

Pretty much the same situation here. :)

The iPad was for her birthday present, and she didn't want a 3G plan. (Why? Isn't that what the phone is for?)

Funny thing... I plug it into my Mac, and iTunes pukes an error and the thing won't connect at all.

I plug it into my Windows box, and BAM! Works perfectly...

That's messed up.

My wife wanted an iPad 2... So we got one... Should I get a divorce? :P

Just kidding! I love my wife more than I could ever say.  :-*

Anyways, the tablet market here in Australia is, well, poor in the sense that you can't get a Samsung Galaxy like she first wanted. So, the next best thing looked like an iPad. Seems like Apple has locked Samsung out of most markets for that now.

Naturally it doesn't work out of the box. You have to link it to iTunes first. Ahem... *cough* So, if you previously had a nice clean machine, you'd better infect it if you want to use iPad. (I already have a dedicated virus machine Mac, so it's ok for me. :P )

It is a very nice looking device.

We'll see if it can network better than my virus box Mac.

I think she'll be happy with it though. I have a feeling that it will be mostly used for BeJeweled Blitz and Strategery. :P ;D

I'm so happy that I use the secure Windows instead of the exploitable Linux stuff.  :P

Hahahah~! YEAH~! You go~! :) Spill that blood baby~! :P Give 'er~!

(Hey -- I like Windows servers!)

I don't think we're in any danger of a flame war here. (One of the nice things about DC -- our "flame wars" are more like "waving lighters in the air".) :P ;D

I hear you.

I've had problems with the Facebook API as they've had things broken and probably some of the worst documentation ever semi-written.

As for closing... yeah... They hype this stuff up, get everyone to invest in their platform, then drop it. It's maddening.

If at all possible, I try to keep away from anything that can screw me like that. It's not always possible though.
