I wouldn't go for any other chipset than intel for intel CPUs, nvidia nforce for AMD CPUs. Things might have improved in the last a-bit-more-than-few years, but I've been burnt by both SiS and VIA chipsets.

Ooooooh, it's finally here :D

Too bad I won't have time for playing it anytime soon :(

Lashiec: double-edged sword indeed. I hate DRM with a passion, but Intel's VT stuff has really great uses as well...

I played around a bit with TC in the mid/late 90'es, and it sure wasn't free back then... it's always looked as ugly as it does now :) and had that shareware nag.

I "SPAMfighter-blocked" the spam mail (from the initial post in this thread), and then tried to send a mail from me to me. The first one was blocked by Outlook Express (OE), so I told OE to mark mails from me, and then I send off another mail from me to me. This one went all through. But I will of course have to wait and see if "he" (the guy I wanna hurt) ever sends me another mail (from "me"), before I know if the trick has worked the way I am hoping.
Ummm, so after you blocked the spam mail and sent yourself a mail, that mail was blocked?

So, with this "community based" approach, won't that mean that everybody else using spamfighter will not be able to receive mails from you, only yourself since you explicitly allowed mails from yourself?

Well, a bunch of internet protocols are extremely lame, and SMTP is one of them. "Yes, but security wasn't a concern once they were created" - sorry, no excuse.

Curt: the spam filter should be blocking mails based on the content of the mail body, not just any of the header lines (to/from/subject). I thought SPAMfighter would do that, if not - it's useless.

There's little you can do about that trick anyway, and I can't see how that SPF thing would help even the slightest; all that's being done is using a bogus "From: " field in the mail header... it doesn't involve using your domains SMTP server or whatever.

justice: dropping rights does help, but there's still local privilege elevation exploits to worry about; I wouldn't recommend anybody to run outlook express (or anything else using the IE rendering engine).

With (the freeware version of) AntiSpam Sniper for The Bat, I've had 8776 identified and 254 unidentified spam messages since March 4... that's less than 3% spam going through, pretty okay imho. With the full version, it offers access to some spam lists etc., which would probably get it close to 100% identified.

General Software Discussion / Re: Turning Windows 2003 Server into a workstation?
« Last post by f0dder on August 28, 2007, 06:07 AM »
There's two parts to the win2k3 server thing... one is in what components are installed, but you can use www.nliteos.com to fix up XP and remove stuff you don't need (does take a bit tweaking though).

The other is, and I might remember things wrongly here, is that MS uses a more recent version of their compiler for win2k3 compared to the one used for XP (interestingly enough, XP64 is closer related to 2k3 than regular XP) - I don't know how much this matters in real life, though.

I think that madis from the flat assembler community runs a tweaked win2k3, I could try asking him.

Curt, I would suggest either moving to a better email client that has proper antispam available (I personally use The Bat, but ThunderBird is closer to Outlook/OE interface, and comes with very nice anti-spam built in).

The alternative is to find a decent spam filter for Outlook/OE; the ones I've tried did cause some instability for OE every now and then, though.

But really, do consider Thunderbird - it's less likely to get exploited than OE, since it doesn't use the IE web control for HTML mail rendering, which OE does.

I'm puzzled you went with and AMD64x2 instead of core2duo, since money doesn't seem to have been your biggest concern; around here, I could have gotten a E6550 for the same price as the 6000+. But oh well, it's going to be a decent enough machine anyway.

GeForce 7600 is a pretty decent card, relatively fast but not one of the monster power consumers. I'm fond of my fanless one, and I certainly like the NV drivers a lot more than the buggy stuff from ATI :)

If i ever want to go for something better, i guess i'll get another SLI card (that explains why i went for a nVidia card).
-ak_
You do need the second card to be exactly the same as the first card, though, don't you? Might be difficult finding that once you get to the point where you need the extra performance. Of course you can always get a new (or two new ;)) cards then, but then it defeats the "economic" aspect of SLI.

I do run a SLI motherboard myself, but that's only because it was the only fanless motherboard available at the time that was also stable.

4gb shouldn't a problem under XP, not under the 32bit version either, you just won't be able to have a single app use all the memory.

--why do certain companies insist of branding their name across multiple subfolders
(ie Adobe) c:\program files\adobe\acrobat\acrobat 8.0\acrobat.exe  gimme a break

Nothing annoys me more than when I go to the start menu looking to run a game and realise that I need to know who published it just to find the shortcut.
That's a bit annoying indeed, should simply go into a "games" folder instead.

In the case of other kinds of software and their install-on-disk location, some subfolders at least for program version is good, though; sometimes you need multiple versions of something installed.

Apple should have done the right thing, and made it (to some degree) extensible and user-programmable.

Will be interesting to see how many nasty exploits will be made once this can of worm opens; I'm glad I have regular not-so-fancy cellphone :)

So, apart from the 0001-0500 time window, were there any problems? If not, I guess it's an acceptable amount of downtime for a router crash unless you're paying some seriou amount of money for the hosting :)

Also keep in mind that you will be wanting a notebook sata harddrive, not a regular 3.5" model :P

Sending portion is easy, just use MAPI.

And please get this thread renamed so it doesn't say "virus", and state your intentions a bit better, if it's just a little joke program you want to make. There's a world of difference, and a world of pain  waiting for you if you actually wanted to write a virus.

They don't, and they shouldn't - but many programmers are stupidiots.

You can use the common program files folder instead, which can be a good idea if you're using DLLs that are generic. If not (in the case of plugins), the DLLs will usually be bundled somewhere inside the application folder anyway.

Hm, around here (Denmark) you can get a Core2Duo E6550 for the same price as an AMD64x2 6000+ - I'd definitely go for the c2d model, even if the motherboard will be a bit more expensive... and they don't seem to be much more expensive actually, especially considering you'll be getting an intel chipset (<3 RAID Matrix).

I'm staying away from ATI because of their horrible drivers, and nvidia seems to be decent enough speedwise. And if you compare the DX10 series of cards, well, bye-bye ATI.

Personally, I suggest getting 3 or 4 (if possible) and make them a striped array.  This gives a small (though not insignificant) performance boost especially with photoshop, while giving you a better chance at recovery if one goes bad (if two go at the same time you are still screwed though, so never use this in place of a good backup strategy!)
-steeladept
You mean a stripe+mirror combo, not just a 4-drive stripe...

As for RAM... standard 32bit windows will only let an application use ~2GB of memory. If you add a switch to boot.ini, applications that are marked aware will be able to use up to 3GB, but not the last gig. Doesn't mean the memory is wasted though, just that a single application won't be able to use more then 2 (or 3) gigabytes.

I'd go for a nvidia card and an intel core2duo instead...

And the other thinkpad (or whatever ibm/lenovo/whatever calls them now) (that I didn't try to reinstall, after the mess with the first) after a windows update suddenly tells me that the product activation key is invalid. Great. Good thing I purchased two XP OEM copies so I can rid of that piece of shit.

If your cd/dvd burner supports packet writing, you can download directly to a cd/dvd. If it doesn't, you can't - simple as that.

I've never been much of a fan of packet writing myself, always seems to bring trouble in one way or another.
