I did not make it clear.. if you want your comments to be seen by people who MATTER, then please post them at the thread I linked above. They will be waking soon, and visiting that thread. If it is just me, I look like a crazy person. If there is some user support, they realize users are fed up.

I have a real fear now that users, in general, don't care (not you guys, but others.. the average user).

Side note: If you could turn the CAPTCHA level down a bit, it would be much easier to post. I had to try 3 times. :(

Oh god...

So I'm remoting to a server, and about to add in a new web site... I scan down the list of existing sites, and lo and behold... Apparently I got pretty pissed some time in the past, and added in a new site for "youdirtyassburglar.com". I must have been pretty lit as I also had a typo for the site name on the server - "yourdirtyassburglar". :P

Yeah... It can take MAJOR effort to get a false positive removed. I've done it before, but I also know other people that have major fights with the AV vendors trying to get their software delisted.

It's not just the damage, but the additional damage of also having to take out all that time and effort from real productivity and funnel it into what shouldn't be an issue in the first place.

FWIW - MS is pretty good, but they do have some false positives as well... Even with their own partners... :( But that's typical MS - the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing.

If you're an ASP member, post it there -- also -- post it in the JoS forums too.

There are more software forums like those (I've kind of stopped reading/visiting them as so many tech people there just seem to be looking for a fight) -- if anyone can remember some of those, post them as well -- it might help. I know a lot of people have been burned by false positives. Actually, thinking about it, if you've been around for long, it's almost impossible that you haven't... Just about everyone complains about it.

AMEN~!

I bought a few domain names a number of years ago because I wanted to try to draw attention to this problem, but never got around to it. (false-positive.com, scareware.net/org)

It's a tough job to detect real malware, but like you said:

Causing collateral damage to innocent businesses/families is simply unacceptable. It will sometimes accidentally occur, but clearly not enough is being done to prevent this problem, as it has only gotten worse.

I sort of see it like being hired to cut the grass in the park, but also mowing down the children. Y'know... Like who cares if a few patches of grass are red? :P

General Software Discussion / Re: Couldn't be more disappointed in Windows 8 :(

The problem with speech recognition is not that it doesn't work well enough, but that it is not appropriate as an input method in the vast majority of situations where a user needs to interact with a computer.

Thinking again, if by that you mean it's "not appropriate in public" as some sort of "manners" thing, and not the technical aspect, I still think that it will fly.

After all, what's the difference between talking ON the phone and talking TO the phone?

So, if you can get away talking on the phone, there's no difference. e.g. In some places it is against local by-laws to talk on the phone, like in some subways/metros/undergrounds.

Things will change when STT (speech recognition) becomes viable/real.

Not likely. The problem with speech recognition is not that it doesn't work well enough, but that it is not appropriate as an input method in the vast majority of situations where a user needs to interact with a computer.

Think about a room full of people talking on their cell phones and then think about a room full of people talking to their computers.

I guarantee that it will change the game. The "noisy room" or "voice in a room" problem was solved a few years ago, so now the only thing there is patent licensing, which as I alluded to above or before, is a large part of the problem. I don't have a reference though. I read about it a while back in one of the audio/DSP newsletters I subscribe to or something like that. However, for a similar technology, check out Melodyne as it has note and instrument separation.

I'll have to disagree about speech recognition at the moment: speech recognition doesn't work well enough right now, which is again part of the problem. Listen to what Adam Smith has to say on the topic in the interview I linked to above.

Yeah. Speech recognition is one hell of privacy breaker. Difference between "typing pron keyword" and shouting "pron", says it all.  ;D

Hahhahaha~! ;D

Well, if you want to surf pron in public... I suppose.

But how much quicker would it be to consume information on your phone if you could go from inside of one application to another, e.g. "quit surf the register site search apple patent lawsuit go". That's a lot faster than fumbling around like you need to now.

SR/STT will change the game when it become practical. We're a few years out at a minimum though.

Developer's Corner / TrialPay Integration with Infralution Licensing
« Last post by Renegade on September 22, 2011, 09:32 AM »
I've been working on a bunch of licensing stuff inbetween all the trillions of interruptions... i.e. Getting 1 week's work worth of done per month... Or something like that... Distractions aside...

For anyone that needs to put food on the table with software that you write, have a serious look at TrialPay (affiliate link if you feel like being kind to me -- non-affiliate link => http://www.trialpay.com/ ).

Anyways, I've been doing more integration work, and have posted some details on it with "how to" to help speed up things for anyone that's interested. So, here it is:

TrialPay Integration with IPN.NET

It should be helpful for anyone that's interested in doing licensing and maximizing revenue. (TrialPay is very good there -- I have some software that's made more through TrialPay than through regular sales. Or close enough for a foggy memory at least... :) )

The basic thing there is using the Infralution Licensing System with the Infralution IPN.NET solution and integrating TrialPay into that. My previous post was on integrating ILS and IPN.NET with DotNetNuke.

My focus in those articles is on keeping a tight licensing system with a single license repository, easy license retrieval for users, and minimal impact on systems to help make future upgrades as painless as possible.

Anyways... I hope that helps someone. :)

Sure, tablets and smart phones maybe the future, but hell no, desktops haven't sailed away and won't be for a very loooooong time.

+1

Any time I hear predictions about the demise of the desktop, I just want to strangle someone. That prediction is based on a fundamental misunderstanding of human-machine interaction where ONLY the most basic consumption is taken into account.

Form factor is the big thing. Phones, tablets and laptops simply do not offer the massive display possibilities of a full monitor, or array of monitors. Those monitors are not "portable" (yet).

Input is another big thing. Tapping a screen is NOT a replacement for a tactile keyboard. You simply CANNOT ever become as fast on a virtual keyboard as you can on a physical keyboard. e.g. How can you find F or J without the ridges or tactile sensation? A minor shift is easily corrected through touch on a normal keyboard. You cannot do that on a flat surface unless you look or start making errors as you type.

Fact is, tablet and phone input methods are still extremely primitive with almost no thought at all put into them. "Let's touch the screen" is just an overly simplictic approach to input. Contrast that with the keyboard and you have a very stark difference where the keyboard is logically thought out and incredibly well put together with actual thought put into human physiology and ergonomics.

Ok. Someone's going to call me on that... Here's why...

Get a tablet. Or get a book about the size of a tablet and pretend that it's a tablet. Hold it. Don't turn it on, or if you do, read a book on it. Sit down with it or walk around with it.

Next, notice where your hands are.

Case closed.

The Apple UI dogma is to have the "Back" button at the top left of the screen. If you didn't notice, when you were reading this was the furthest away point for you to be able to actually press it.

i.e. The optimal user input portion of a tablet is the lower-left and lower-right corner quarter-circles of the tablet with an effective radius slightly less than that of the length of your thumb. That's where your easiest input is.

Examine where the ACTUAL input interfaces are in most applications... Not there, that's for sure.

Some applications make sense to not have the inputs there, though it's a case-by-case thing.

Things will change when STT (speech recognition) becomes viable/real. Eye tracking will also change how devices work. However, we are a very far way away from that.

However, current speech recognition engine revenue models make it impractical for most software. For some really really good information on speech recognition, listen to our interview with Adam Smith on The Doc Report. I don't mean that to be self-promotional -- I mean that quite literally. We talk at length about speech recognition.

Anyways, I think I'm wandering off-topic here somewhat.

I've not tried the new Windows developer release, so I can't really comment on it other than to say... it's a developer preview, as is already noted above.

Yeah, I just REALLY stuffed up.
Normally I stick to easy stuff after a few drinks, but someone was insisting that I pay an outstanding running account. I wanted to wait until I saw them and use my card, but they insisted, so I transferred it. I put a description of 'that shut you up?' and sent.
Ummmm, accounts are managed by the head boss, who I did NOT want to annoy. Unfortunately I did. A lot. I hope this works out smoother than it was earlier. I promised him a case of beer.

Hahahahaha~! ;D

A good screw up every now and then is good to keep us humble. ;D :P

<!-- start slipsum code -->

Your bones don't break, mine do. That's clear. Your cells react to bacteria and viruses differently than mine. You don't get sick, I do. That's also clear. But for some reason, you and I react the exact same way to water. We swallow it too fast, we choke. We get some in our lungs, we drown. However unreal it may seem, we are connected, you and I. We're on the same curve, just on opposite ends.

Do you see any Teletubbies in here? Do you see a slender plastic tag clipped to my shirt with my name printed on it? Do you see a little Asian child with a blank expression on his face sitting outside on a mechanical helicopter that shakes when you put quarters in it? No? Well, that's what you see at a toy store. And you must think you're in a toy store, because you're here shopping for an infant named Jeb.

Normally, both your asses would be dead as fucking fried chicken, but you happen to pull this shit while I'm in a transitional period so I don't wanna kill you, I wanna help you. But I can't give you this case, it don't belong to me. Besides, I've already been through too much shit this morning over this case to hand it over to your dumb ass.

Second, half a bottle in the freezer... Should last long enough to drive to the store and pick up another few. :P But don't worry... I only drink beer on the way back. :P

But it looks very cool.

You think I kid... from some production code...

Code: C# [Select]
  1. try{
  2.
  3. }
  4. catch (Exception ex)
  5. {
  6.     throw ex
  7. }
  8. finally
  9. {
  10.
  11. }

You mean that literally?

But at the moment, I'm on #4, and just smoking in the zone! I'm getting a truckload of coding done! :D
