Living Room / Re: How to think, act and live better - great books!
« Last post by brotherS on January 05, 2007, 08:52 AM »
books that changed my life:

A Brief History of Time by S.W. Hawking http://www.amazon.co...?ie=UTF8&s=books
I thought about reading it a few times, maybe I will some day.

i pretty much hated the idea of reading books because of what i was forced to read at school.
Crappy teacher(s) :( Luckily I started to enjoy reading books before I had to read them in school, some of what we had to read wasn't that good...

i then picked this up in my early twenties and realised i was a complete moron and that there were people out there that knew things i couldn't even imagine.
Be thankful you got 'the wake-up call' early in life. Too many never get it.  8)

The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins http://www.amazon.co...?ie=UTF8&s=books
after being introduced to the marvelous world of popular science by mr. hawking i then read dozens more by popular science authors. reading the selfish gene was not unlike being woken from a dream - or to be more dramatic - like the scene in 'the matrix' when neo discovers things aren't quite what he thought they were.
Ha! Thanks, I forgot about this one, someone else recommended it to me once. I ordered it now (one minute ago)!

Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell http://www.amazon.co...?ie=UTF8&s=books
i don't read many novels but this is one i read at school. i think it fair to say it shaped my view on the world from that point on.
Yes, I bet that's awesome, I only saw the (really good) movie.

I'm directly looking at >4000 unread book pages piled up next to me (I wonder why Amazon doesn't yet send me xmas presents  ;)).

Along those lines I also recommend you buy the book Radical Honesty. Not an easy read but well worth the time invested!

brotherS, any chance you could tell us something about the book?
Sure, let me just quote Beth Hartford's excellent review:

Whenever I pick this book up off the bookshelf I am reminded of the Jack Nicholsons character in A Few Good Men where he says "The Truth? You cant handle the truth!". This is an in your face book that will make some people terribly uncomfortable. People who are afraid of honesty. I believe that while many people will say they want the truth that when they hear it they are livid. Truth hurts. And I admit that I have a double standard with myself when it comes to truth. Most of the time I speak my mind and say what I believe. But I also admit that I also deflect questions from some people whom experience has shown me cannot handle the truth, simply because I don't need the nonsense in my life.
And I admit that I winced when I first saw the books title and then became intrigued when I heard him speak on a variety of radio and television shows. So I bought the book and am glad. And yes it is heavily politically incorrect in an era where pushing and enabling the whole woe is me victim mode is so popular.

One of my favorite parts of this book and advise that I believe more people need to take is where the author writes on page 179" Many of the people who go to therapists or physicians seeking relief are tired. They are tired from having worked out their lives in such a way that they get worn out instead of recharged by living. When someone like this takes responsibility for exercise, nutrition, and rest, a number of their "psychological" problems disappear. The human body has a wonderful capacity to restore itself it is given a break from abuse and a chance to rest. Wellness is a natural state of being for people who have learned how to get out of their own way. "

On page 185 the author notes wisely that "What happens when therapy works and keeps on working is that people want to learn about how to stay well. They become interested in living in the world by constantly renewing their leases on life rather than by being lost in their minds. They can do that best within the context of a sustaining community of other people in the same boat--people who have created wellness and are committed to maintaining wellness."

On page 187 he shares that most people don't take care of themselves out of knowing they should. That there was a man who was told by his physician to lose 15 lbs but didn't and in fact gained 10 more pounds and was told at his next doctors visit by the doctor "If you aren't willing to take care of yourself, why in the hell should I?". That it took having a heart attack that could have been prevented for the man to change. Dr Blanton then wisely notes that "learning to take care of ourselves creatively rather than resentfully is a big step in growing up".

On page 212 Dr Blanton notes "Responsibility means that whatever you are doing, you are willing to experience yourself as the cause. You are the source of your troubles as well as your successes." "As long as you are blaming, explaining, apologizing, trying, resolving to be good, hoping or feeling guilty, you are not being responsible." On page 215 "To get back in touch with who you are when you have been lost in your mind is to get back to your source. This is hard to do. You have to die to live."

I originally replied in https://www.donation...index.php?topic=6146 and then split the topic. If you read a book that changed your life in the best meaning of the phrase, please share what you know!

Please don't just post the book name, post the Amazon link (like I did below for Radical Honesty), so that we can check its ratings and reviews easily. Thanks!

Hi,

I just accidently discovered a new (at least to me) SC feature: when you press ESC it's minimized to the tray. That's nice, but not that helpful if you are renaming a file and just want to abort the renaming - by pressing ESC.
:)

Could SC maybe detect if you are renaming files and then don't minimize? Or something else?

Several months ago I tried out a site like this. I can't remember if it was RtM or not, but I never got the scheduled e-mail and my Spam box has been filling up rather fast since around then.
Then it wasn't RTM :)

I prefer to get my RTM reminders as IM messages - one digest in the morning, then individual messages over the day.

Nice article! I also like the beginning:
THE NEXT GENERATION disk format has been settled once and for all. Thanks to the due diligence, hard work and unprecedented cooperation between the media companies, the hardware vendors and the OS vendor, we finally have a solution. It is quite easy, Piracy, the better choice(TM).

Despite the flaws of the system it mostly does work. I agree with the ratings or at least the tendency* of the ratings of all the programs I know and checked at their site.

*sometimes programs get a less good rating than they deserve, but I never saw a really bad rating for a great program - same is true vice versa.

No need to code something new, just install Startup Delayer!

That will give you a very good idea how far up Windows is *and* optimize it at the same time.

Is there anything that can be done with Autohotkey that could help with my situation?
It's AutoHotkey: of course! :)

I imagine something like "check if PROGRAM's window is active" (If WinActive, check out http://www.autohotke...om/docs/commands.htm) - if it hasn't been active for x minutes -> close PROGRAM.

Some of the more experienced AutoHotkey users here can probably help you with more details.

This might be what I've been looking for.  I'll look at it and see if it will work for my situation.
Yep, my script at the end of that thread should do exactly what you want. If you can't get it to work for your program(s), please reply there.

I don't mind the sound of fans spinning. I can't sleep unless I hear it. I have been around the constant sound of fans running for over 20 yrs...

It has become a sort of soothing white noise for me.
Ok, your brain has obviously been rewired over the years, I'll exclude you from my "Everyone should get a quiet PC!" mantra.
;D

Air cleaners
evaporative humidifiers
window fans
air conditioners
Not one of those around me thankfully - the only place I really like A/C is in my car :)

silence doesn't matter much to me.
Studies have shown that silent PCs increase productivity because you feel better - and I can second that from my own experience. It's SO wonderful to work with a PC that's humming away as 'loud' as the sound of a soft summer breeze!

But since you smoke you might not really care about how healthy a quiet PC is ;)

One of the nifty features of my Plextor DVD burner is the option to slow the drive's opening mechanism to one of a small number of preset speeds, to silence it even more for "when silence is golden" or something.  I say, let that drive open at full speed, because it's not that loud to begin with.  However, for those looking for silence in components like a DVD burner, I'd have to suggest looking at the Plextor line-up of drives.  Mine's a bit old (it's a PX-716A), but it acts just like new.
You can set the speed of the opening mechanism?! :o Sounds a bit over the top to me 8) I like DVD burners that burn and read DVDs at a low volume, I'd like to know if the new LG burners *are* quiet.

Hi,

I'm looking for an alternative/addition to the big players Google/Yahoo/MSN, that allows me to forward emails to one of my other accounts. The site should already be around some time and somewhat reliable.

Any candidates?

General Software Discussion / Re: Living without AutoHotkey - possible?
« Last post by brotherS on December 05, 2006, 02:14 PM »
I've decided that I would like to start using AutoHotKey for tasks at work but the internet restrictions block the AHK website (because it's a forum--Good thing they don't know about DC yet!). I managed to find a version of AHK (104407) at Download.com, but the included .chm help file gives me the IE "Internet Explorer was unable to link to the Web page you requested. The page might be temporarily unavailable." for every article, so I can't learn how to use its syntax here.
You can download it at home and install it on an USB drive or burn the installation onto a CD.

Well with out reading the posts (well skimming thru it..) but reading the title... yes I think it's quite possible to live with out AutoHotKey, I'm sure the people who have never heard of it or ever used it live.. therefore making living possible..

 ;D
I can't second that: to me, really living is also a way of life, more than just avoiding the death of all of your body cells. But that would be a completely different discussion... ;-)

In the last few days AutoHotkey helped me to avoid manually pressing several keys about 9200 times and going insane in the process.

If you want another IRC channel to idle in and have a nice discussion every now and then, /join #autohotkey @ irc.freenode.net - there are only a few users in there until now, but as we all now, quality beats quantity. ;)

Post New Requests Here / IDEA: change monitor brightness with keyboard
« Last post by brotherS on December 02, 2006, 02:32 PM »
'Smart' cars use less intensive interior lights in the night, why isn't there some automatic like that for monitors?

Since there isn't, I wonder if there's some easy way to change the monitor brightness with the keyboard? Maybe change some other settings too - my monitor has the user-defined 'profile', and profiles for Text (the white has a kinda yellow touch there), Internet (brighter) and Entertainment (even brighter than 'Internet').

Living Room / Re: Building a Quiet PC
« Last post by brotherS on November 30, 2006, 05:44 AM »
My new 'Cool & Quiet' system sounds like an aircraft waiting to take off ....

25cm case fan (on the side)
2 x 12cm in the back
1 x 12cm fan in the top
1 x 12cm intake fan in the front
not to mention PSU fan, CPU heatsink fan, 2 GPU fans and 3 hard discs whirring.

9 fans!? :o :o :o :o :o

Your PC is suffering from the 'way too many fans' syndrome!

My P-IV 2.4 GHz (I heard new duo-core Pentiums don't get as hot) tower has a temp-controlled CPU fan, the power supply has a temp-controlled fan and there's a huge (and therefor slow/quiet) additional temp-controlled fan, covering the back blowhole to suck the air out/through the case. That's all!

* Before *
You see the RAID HDs in light-silencing, vibration-reducing containers and the power-supply in its original position; the holes in the back aren't closed yet:
http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/4102/hpim0678before2ml9.jpg

* After *
You see the power-supply now in a horizontal position, making place for the huge blowhole and silent-controlled fan; the HDs are now directly in the airflow, *perfect* for cooling:
http://img179.imageshack.us/img179/1327/hpim0945silentcasemodio5.jpg

You see how it looks from the back; note the special fan mounting to avoid vibrations:
