Level 10 looks both incredibly awesome and impossible to finish!

Of course, that's assuming I ever get there in the first place... It's been a while since I tried Twigatelle. I'll have to check out the latest updates. (c:

General Software Discussion / Re: Google Chrome + download manager?
« Last post by Deozaan on March 14, 2010, 11:42 PM »
FreeDownloadManager isn't exactly what you're asking for. It's a standalone application that can integrate with IE, Firefox, and other browsers (including Chrome).

A couple of things it can do, though I haven't used them so I'm not sure how well they suit your request are:

1) Grab a list of all links on a website which lets you select which ones to download.
2) It has a site explorer which lets you view the folders structure of a web site and easily download necessary files or folders.

EDIT: I just found this on the features page (emphasis added):

HTML Spider
You can download whole web pages or even whole web sites with HTML Spider. The tool can be adjusted to download files with specified extensions only.

Living Room / Windows doesn't recognize HDD.
« Last post by Deozaan on March 14, 2010, 11:06 PM »
Hi folks,

I recently found some old HDDs and decided to put them into my pc to see if they still worked. After all, I had them removed because I thought (but wasn't sure) that they were going bad so they were replaced with new HDDs.

Anyway, I've got one that is recognized in the BIOS but doesn't show up in Windows 7, not even in the disk management. I thought that was a little strange, so I booted into an Ubunto LiveCD and Ubuntu at least recognizes there is an HDD there. It doesn't display the contents of the drive but it tells me the label and even knows enough to say it may be failing since it has a lot of bad sectors.

So I tried booting back into Windows 7 and before it booted, it made me run scandisk/check disk on that drive, and as expected, found a bunch of bad sectors and unreadable files and stuff, but when it finally finished booting into Win7 it once again does not indicate the drive exists at all.

I figure the drive is toast, and I certainly don't care about salvaging whatever data may be on it, but I'm really interested in finding out why the drive just seems to disappear in Win7 (ultimate, 32-bit) but everything else (BIOS, Linux) recognizes the drive is there.

Anyone got any ideas?

Very interesting.

Though probably by the time these HDDs become mainstream, Windows 8 and Ubuntu 13.4 and OS XI will be out and one of them ought to be better than XP by then. :)

Are you two crazy? There's a giant hose hanging off your back for the water one. That's like having a remote controlled car with a wire from the car to the controller.

I'd rather the "real" jetpack that would let me fly the skies without so much limitation as a stupid yellow hose plugging into the water.

By the way, Zaine (and other Linux experimenters), have you tried JoliCloud?

It's a distribution based off of Ubuntu Netbook Remix and is in Pre-Beta (which is basically Alpha, right?).

Justin Pot over at MakeUseOf.com has good things to say about it:
I’ve been looking for the perfect operating system download for netbook, and along the way I’ve checked out Chrome OS and Moblin. Chrome’s Internet-only approach turned me off, and while I was quite impressed with Moblin, I concluded it’s not quite ready to be my primary netbook operating system yet.

Jolicloud, however, is the real deal. It exists in a world where desktop applications and web apps are on the same level, and it does so with style. Best of all, it’s extremely easy to use.

He then goes on to mention some of the highlights of why he really likes it, which I'll summarize:

  • Apps are tweaked by default to be optimized for netbooks. He specifically mentions how Firefox's "File/Edit/View" toolbar is hidden behind a drop-down arrow on the right side of the Awesome Bar and that the status bar is hidden until a site is loading (like the Chrome browser).
  • Application manager allows you to install or remove programs using one click (for each application). Also, "web apps" are listed as apps.
  • Web Apps: Basically a window dedicated entirely to a specific website. Get your Gmail, Facebook, Pandora, or whatever website you typically always have a tab open to in it's own window, without the toolbars getting in the way and taking up that precious vertical real estate. Basically a full screen browser window to just that site. And if you click a link in the Web App, it will open up in your default browser instead of browsing away from the web app.
  • Compatibility: If your netbook is listed on the Jolicloud compatibility page you can expect it to "just work." My MSI Wind 120 is listed and, as advertised, it installed and runs perfectly. And according to Justin Pots, even if your machine isn't listed there's still a good chance it will work.
  • Easy to try: It has an installer like Wubi, which allows you to install it from Windows which makes it show up in the Add/Remove Programs list for easy uninstallation.

I tried it out and it does work extremely well. It doesn't even have the problems that Ubuntu Netbook Remix had on this machine (such as screen flickering until it figured out whether the AC Adapter was plugged in or not).

Probably my only complaint thus far is that the application manager has very slim pickings when it comes to applications to install. It probably has enough applications for anyone who would be happy with Chrome OS, but as far as I could figure out, if it's not on the list, there's no easy way to install it, since the usual Synaptics Package Manager thingy is nowhere I could find it.

I wanted an FTP client and I couldn't figure out how to get one, and I couldn't figure out how to get FTP commands to work from the terminal (which I consider for "advanced" users, and thus not the market Jolicloud is looking for), so as far as I know, I'm out of luck for an FTP client until they decide to add one to their application manager. But maybe that's just because I don't know much about linux and the advanced techniques (or maybe something extremely simple I'm overlooking) to get other apps on there.

EDIT: I searched the forum and found that Jolicloud was briefly mentioned in this thread: Advice on Netbooks. And after reading the linked article, Jolicloud seems to have changed a lot since it was reviewed last July.

What's the Best? / Re: best virual cd/dvd maker and image mounter?
« Last post by Deozaan on March 10, 2010, 06:37 AM »
I read on the Gizmo forum that it can mount nero .nrg images but they dont work properly - I mean you cant then play the music files, you can if you mount with daemon and that is the only one that works for me so far. others also claim to handle .nrg but in practice they dont work. I have also tried power.iso and WinCDemu which claim to handle .nrg but they cant

Basically, Gizmo Drive can handle data discs in Nero Format, but not audio discs. I imagine it's the same way for the other programs you mentioned as well.

Has anyone heard of a version of Chrome OS for Netbooks with HDDs (as opposed to SSDs) yet? I'd really like to try it out, but I'm not sure that I'll be able to conjure up a 4GB USB drive.

Awesome! I didn't know about this, and it would be great for those times when I'd like a refresher on the story of a game but don't feel like spending 80 hours playing through Final Fantasy n17 again.

I like the Win7 Start menu just fine, but I'd love to get the total space/free space back in the explorer status bar, and wouldn't mind having the WinXP style copy/replace dialog back. Does this thing let me pick and choose what features I want it to install, or is it an all or nothing deal?

I doubt it's the best, but I use Gizmo Central's Gizmo Drive to mount images.

Though I can't say I've had much need to make disc images in some time, so I'm not sure how well it does at that.

As far as I know, no smartphones support Flash. My Android G1 doesn't.

If you use a lot of Google's services, the Android OS is a no-brainer.

Gmail Contacts are synchronized as your phone contacts (so if you add someone's info on your phone, it will be available in your Gmail contacts, and vice versa).

Google Maps, Gmail, Calendar, Talk, Voice, Finance, Listen (for podcasts), Places Directory (quick and easy way to find the nearest bank, fast food, auto-shop, gas station, or whatever), Google Search, and more.

Pretty much the only major Google services I can think of that are not built into the phone are Google Reader and Google Docs.

But if you don't really care about Google apps, then... I suppose I can't offer a useful suggestion.

Living Room / Re: Anyone playing Mass Effect 2 game yet?
« Last post by Deozaan on March 08, 2010, 02:28 AM »
This is somewhat off topic and more of a reply to App's IRC quote:

I've been thinking lately about an extremely easy game mode, something like "infant mode" or "automated mode," because I have lots of nieces and nephews who like to play games but since they're so young they need someone else to do most of it with them or at least have someone there telling them exactly what to do.

So lately I've been thinking of making modern games with regular difficulties with normal controls, but also special "baby" modes so that anybody can "play" the game and learn the plot and see how it ends. I think Nintendo has recently patented something similar, where you can get hints and tips and even watch videos on how to solve certain puzzles in games, and potentially even just "skip" the puzzle so you can continue on. But my idea takes it a little further, perhaps, and just assists you by basically taking control away from the player in certain circumstances and doing it for you.

Almost like a semi-autopilot. The player can press buttons and move the character around and stuff, but if the player does something dangerous like attempts to jump off the cliff into the spikes, the game will prevent that from happening. Or if the player goes into a group of enemies and isn't defending himself, the game will do the fighting for him.

Anyway, it's just something I was thinking about so that my little monkeys could "play" the same games I do, but the difficulty would be appropriate for both myself and for the little tykes.

So I just watched a movie on Blu-Ray the other day, and the image in the first post here went through my head. The thing I don't understand is, before getting to the main menu of the movie, there was an advertisement about how awesome Blu-Ray is compared to DVD... on the Blu-Ray disc!

Thankfully most of the previews were skippable, but it really is crap having to go through all that junk just to watch a movie you've already bought.

My wife currently gets the newspaper "second-hand" from our neighbor once she's finished with it. She pages through it to find coupons and hands me the comics page.

Every now and then an article will catch my eye and I'll read it, but I probably get my hair cut more often than I read the newspaper.

Developer's Corner / Re: Programmers Challenged, Gauntlet Thrown
« Last post by Deozaan on March 04, 2010, 09:42 PM »
I did something kind of like that for 30 days spanning parts of April & May back in 2004. Inspired by the now-defunct bit-101 labs, I made a Flash "program" everyday. Though often I would take a previous day's project and add to it or modify it, it was actually pretty difficult even doing that to come up with something to program every day for 30 days.

Some of the things I made don't work anymore because they relied on server side scripts or other separate files that are no longer there, but if you'd like to take a look at what I did (probably pretty boring), you can see it at my Idler Project.

Depends on what it's being used for - for nachos, I like personally like the salsa heated along with the chips & cheese :)
