I'll probably bring it to the local shop...

Well, brought it in for a "checkup".
They couldnt find a problem :-\ and said I needed to reinstall windows. (I didnt let them test the harddrives - but I've been copying stuff off of them for the last couple of hours with one of those external drive "readers" & they seem fine.)

So, either:
  • they didnt do a decent checkup and they fobbing me off with "reinstall"
  • they did ^ and all that happened last week was, like, a dream :D

Still no updates on Lockhunter since April 2009

So... how beta/stable is LockHunter? They do at least have a x64 version I see (Yeah!).

Probably too soon for me to say (I just installed 64 bit version today on win7) - but it has already worked successfully for me anyways ;-)

You may want to check http://www.mu-43.com/ for more information regarding the Olympus and Panasonic Micro 4/3 cameras. It's a good group.

well,
I just heard some commonsense spoken in the radio news by some Europol person (European international police) saying that basically if this kind of thing was implemented the perpetrator would simply work around it....

I've finally installed Winpatrol - the plus version - this week (bought it last year sometime!).

For startup items, the plus info has been very helpful
One thing I cant find is a way to start a programme minimised. There is the workaround of adding it to the delayed startup items where you can modify parameters & set delay to zero.

How are you supposed to restore with this?
They talk about a "Start CD" but it doesnt seem to be one you can make yourself - it was a bargain but without this it's pretty useless.
Have I missed out on something?

Help file says:
Note: The Start CD, designed for running O&O DiskImage without an operating system and for restoring a system
partition, is not included in the Special Edition.

Anyone know was this a "special" edition?

Thanks....

I know, it's an old thread, but it's not worth starting a new thread for this:

Relatively fresh Win 7 Pro install (updated, including SP1):
there was no hibernate option at all from the shutdown etc menu.

Fix involved Command Prompt, opened with admin rights:
powercfg /hibernate on

and turning off the option "Hybrid sleep" in Power options

Details here:

Oh, and by the way, since 76 people were murdered in Norway 6 days ago, almost 90,000 children under 5 have starved to death. Just to put a little perspective on things...

...there's really no need to put perspective on this Renegade: it is good that you make us aware of what's going on in the world and I understand that you are upset about the media coverage imbalance and the reactions you quote.

But if you were related to any of those people, or if you were closer geographically, you wouldnt want to hear this.
Neither is on. Hunger or murder. No need to compare imo.

Can we really trust this test result:
 (see attachment in previous post)

:tellme:

Well, I think so:
http://www.av-test.o...ion_desc&lang=en

Gets 6 (out of six) for protection
MSE only gets 2.5 :(

also gets very good marks for usability & "repair"

loved the one-eyed skulls Edvard ;D

Couldnt find a decent video of Amy Winehouse (very strict copyright stuff going on here...) but heard these guys doing a couple of covers of her songs lately. Seems like a good tribute to Amy Winehouse. (They do a lot of covers I see - I've only heard a couple but like them.)

The Jolly Boys (apparently named by Errol Flynn, they used play at his partys in the late 40's early 50's :o )

Living Room / Re: Are we allowed to avoid the "My Docs" mess in Win7?
« Last post by tomos on July 25, 2011, 02:21 PM »
I don't f*ck with where Windows (and other applications) wants to put and name the "My Documents" or "Documents" folder.  I leave it right where MS wants to put it.

But.. and here's the key point.. I don't go near that directory with my own files.  I use my own custom MyDocs folder for any program data that *I* have control over.  So any program where i have a choice, and where I care about the data, I save to the MyDocs folder.

Well if I combine ^this approach with:

  • adding the new personal folders to favourites in windows explorer
  • customising the save-as dialogue and/or using a dialogue extender

I guess I'm sorted for everyday use.

If the application in question doesn't have a configurable method of getting rid of it's pesky folder I just make it a hidden folder and leave it there. Then it can be there and completely ignorable at the same time.

seems like a good solution

EDIT2: Aha! I didn't notice that there were 2 pages to this thread. That explains why I didn't see Carol's post. :-[

. . . gotta find another excuse there Deo :p - you were answering my post [ I think :-[ ] which was already on page #2 :D

Actually I was just providing the general info to Cyberdiva, who at the beginning (first page) of the thread didn't seem to understand why UAC would prompt her for admin privileges (or why it would be necessary to use the "Always run as Administrator" option) when she was already using an Administrator account.

But it looks like you also just happened to be wondering the same thing.

there I go for getting smart :D

If you have any insight into what would work, I'm all ears. I just can't see any decent default alternatives.

I think it's really up to windows to allow users to customise the save/save-as/open dialogues.
=> Problem solved.

^ "[FileHamster] is set to make revisions not more often than every 5 minutes"
I didnt know you could regulate that in FH, must check it out.

For me, FileHamster is worth using (and worth reporting bugs etc. in their forums) because I can save a comment with each file-version saved so I know what I'm restoring if it comes to that (and it has).
I have comment window set to show for each save, if that doesnt show, I know something is up. Without this setting, you wont notice if something has not backed up, which, as already said, is not on...

thanks Carol + Deo - I guess I'll stick with my admin account then, makes startup easier with just one account...

I guess you already figured this out, but I felt it could use repeating:

Just because your account is an administrator account doesn't mean every program you run is run with Administrator privileges.

For the problematic applications, you should still go into the compatibility settings and check the "Run this program as an Administrator" option. Then it will always give you a UAC prompt when it first runs, but shouldn't have any problems doing what it needs to do after that.

EDIT: I'm not sure how it took me ~15 minutes to write this tiny post, but Carol's post just above mine wasn't here before I wrote this. Naturally she said exactly what I was trying to say, but was more succinct.
my emphasis
I know what you mean (succinct I am not) but your longer version helped the implications sink in fully.

I'm not on Win7 as I write,
but I guess I could just remove and/or ignore the libraries and add my equivalent folders to favourites....

[edit] then I'm back looking for a dialogue extender for save/open. Ah well, just what I'm used to... [/edit]

this, from a Vista user:

In other words I have a lot of folders under My Documents, which I never
intend to use. So I delete these folders, but the next time I start an
application, it's folder is recreated. Currently I have modified the
permissions on My Documents, to deny:Create Folder. This works, but from
time to time some application will fail to reinstall and I have to temporary
 unprotect the folder.

Messing around with a fresh windows 7 install.

It took a little figuring but I have removed the "My ____" folders from the libraries and have created new folders (without "My"!!) on other drives that are now the default save locations (one for each heading).

I was hoping to avoid the mess made by installing programmes putting their own "My [junk]" folders in My Docs etc. But I suspect, that as the new folders are the default save locations, that windows will direct installing programmes to these new locations.*
If Windows does subject me to this, is there any other way to avoid it?

Hope I'm explaining clearly(?)

* [edit] I havent installed much yet, and nothing has used any of the folders, (default or "My___" folders) so far. So I dont know how this works with apps that do that kind of thing [/edit]

General Software Discussion / Re: How necessary is the UAC in Windows 7?
« Last post by tomos on July 23, 2011, 02:04 PM »
I've reread the thread an amn't fully clear about admin vs. user accounts.

The thing to keep in mind is that UAC 'dumbs down' your administrative account pretty much to the level of a Limited User Account - so by default, applications don't have a lot of control.

so is it okay securitywise to use UAC at highest setting with an admin account - or better to do it with a user account?

- newly installed Win7, all I need is one account, but if I make that one user, I presume I have to create an admin account as well (first).

No apologies! there was a debate but from what Cyberdiva said, I'm hopeful my older software will work okay. I guess I should just test the software at this stage and if it doesnt work, cut my losses and reinstall, but with xp first, as you suggest.

I hope to avoid having to use it at all to be honest :)

Well, it's looking good, my most important programme works fine.

:-\ I am on the default admin account though, I presume I should be using a normal account or does it matter so much in windows 7?

Re the second harddrive -
I ended up deleteing the partitions on it (3, including the 100MB system one)

But there is an extended partition left at the end of the drive(just called "Free Space")
If I try delete this I get the message:
"This is an extended partition. The partition will become inaccessible If you delete it."
-
that sounds like I'll lose all that space if I delete? (I googled that without much success)

I unable to resize it (in windows). Is there a windows solution for this - or maybe again a gparted one.

edit/ found some info about it, I dont know what I searched for first time round :-\
edit#2/ just deleted it, it was fine :)
