General Software Discussion / Re: slideshow to dvd making

You need to load "Nero Burning Rom" from the start menu - forget using Nero Quick Start (the sort of task orientated interface).

You should get something like this:

Nero1.png

Select DVD Video on the left and use the Label Tab to give the disc a short name:

Nero2.png

This brings up a template in which you can drag the VIDEO_TS to the root of this and it will add all your video files:

Nero3.png

Now drag you folder of JPEGs to the root folder and it should create a folder with all the JPEGs in it:

Nero4.png

Now burn the project and you should have a DVD-VIDEO with a folder of photos on it too. Here is the file structure of the disc I burned by this method:

Nero5.png

The DVD works fine (using Intervideo WinDVD7 on the computer, I haven't actually burned a physical disc, just an image which I mounted in Nero DriveImage), and the photos are all there (even in the folder hieracrchy) and can be viewed by 'Exploring' the DVD on the computer.

Bookmark Buddy allows you to do this with a single click per page you want to save. Not sure you can do it automatically though for all pages visited.

Have you tried "Make your own DVD" and just using the normal video file produced by PS3, without bothering to use TMPGEnc. Nero should automatically recode anything as required.

Just tried this and it works fine ... here is a sequence you can try ...

(1) Build you PS3 project and out put the slideshow as a .WMV file.
(2) In Nero go to "Make your own DVD-Video" and add the WMV file
(3) Do what is necessary to generate the DVD menus etc on the following screens.
(4) On the Burn screen select "Burn to Image Recorder" and choose ISO output when it asks for the file name to save.
(5) Use WinRAR to extract the folders from the ISO image on your hard disc or use Nero ImageDrive to mount the image and copy the folders.
(6) Add a folder with your original photos.
(7) Go into Nero Burning Rom and select the DVD Video Template. Copy the folders you have created (AUDIO_TS, VIDEO_TS and you original photos folder) to the root directory of the DVD-Video template
(8) Burn the DVD to disc

You should now have a working DVD video with the slideshows on a menu screen, and also have folders on the DVD so that the original files can be accessed on a computer (like DVD extras on commercial discs).

Let me know how it goes.

I know this may be seen as patronising but you were using the Nero DVD-Video template and putting all the files generated into the Video_TS folder ??

It seems daft to check this but I have chosen the wrong template occasionally by mistake and then things don't work.

I have just tried this with a CD-RW backup and differential backups seem to work fine. You just need to insert the last disk in the backup set before running the application, otherwise it does a full backup. I presume it would work in a similar way with DVD-RW formats.

I looked in the help file and you can also use DVD-R and CD-R formats, the only difference being that Rollback is turned off.

But in explorer you can have an icon display (which I prefer for general use - aging eyesight) which can group items alphapetically, by type, by size, by date etc. in separate sections each with a header. I find it quite a neat layout but I can't find an equivalent in DO.

I use backup to hard disk - I haven't tried with DVD. I presume if you backup to DVD a record is kept somewhere of the date/time of backup so that the diefferetial/incremental backups can be performed - but since I haven't tried it I don't know if this works.

For incremental backups you need all of the DVD prior to the backup date you wish to restore. For example, if you have the following sets of backups:

BASE

Inc1

Inc2

Inc3

The BASE backup provides a backup at the time the first backup is performed. Each increment provides later updates to that backup. If you want to retore the latest version of the backup then all 4 backups must be available. If Inc2 becomes corrupted you can only restore Inc1+BASE, if BASE becomes corrupted you won't be able to restore anything.

Having never been in this position I don't know if Genie is intelligent enough to retrieve what it can or if, like most software, it will simply say the backup is corrupt.

I have a question too ...

Windows Explorer allows you to view in groups - how can you get DO to do this (eg. all folders together, all TXT files together etc)

Unfortunaely DVD-RW discs aren't generally mutisession (like CD-RWs, CD-R). They are usally only RW in the  sense you can reformat them and use again. Some DVD-RW uses can be multisession (like DVD-VR format discs produced by DVD recorders) but I don't think Nero can write them as multisesseion for DVD-Video discs.

Sorry I was being a bit stupid wasn't I !!

To produce them on Nero you you have to recode the output using TMPGEnc and build the entire DVD in Nero, thus not using the Sonic plugin.

I haven't got PS3 or the Sonic plugin installed at the moment so I don't know if this is possible. If you can create a DVD folder (VIDEO_TS) on your harddisc in PS3 or via the Sonic plugin, or an ISO image, you could then rebuild the DVD content on your hard disc and then add the photos in Nero before buring to a disc.

Looks great - a really useful mod. Are you going to package it as a mod for SMF forums or keep it to this board?

Here is the Help File description of backup types from Genie:

Normal Backup Backup all selected files and folders every time.

Increment Includes all files that have changed since the last normal (full) or incremental backup using the files' last modified date and time stamp.

Mirror Includes all files that have changed since the last normal (full) or incremental backup using the files' last modified date and time stamp. This backup type does not support rollback, so old versions of files will be replacesd with newer ones and missing files will be deleted from the backup set.

Differential Includes all files since last normal (full) backup using the files' last modified date and time stamp.

In Genie you set up backup tasks (collections of files and folders to backup and specific task, like backup Outlook Express) and then incremental/differential will monitor for changes to files/folder contents etc. and next time you run the task only backup the changed items.

Differential backups are the more space efficient, as it only keeps the first FULL backup and then makes a single differential backup of changes which means previous differential 'lumps' can be deleted as required without affecting backup integrity -so effectively you have only two two parts to your backup. It can also automate the deletion of previous diffential 'lumps' by specifying how many backups to retain.

Incremental backups allow for easier rollback to a previous state because it always saves all changes since the last backup - so you have a FULL backup plus a number of incremental backups which can be restored independently ad files can be extracted from different dated backups. This can allow some control over version fo files to recover which can be very useful. Note that ALL increments must be retained for a successful restore.

Glad you got it working - yes I found PS3 didn't like extremely large files (I have a lot of photos taken with a Digital SLR and they can be up to 8Mb per picture - it certainly doesn't like these).

True that this results in degraded images on the disc, but TV/DVD resolution is so poor compared to the original picture that it really isn't going to be visible if the images are reduced in size/resoltion quite dramatically. If you want to store originals on the DVD why not create a top level folder on the DVD (called photos or something) and store the originals on the DVD too. Nero seems able to support this and it shouldn't affect the compatability of the resulting DVDs. I'm not sure though if this constitutes a mixed mode DVD or if you can just manually add a folder, I presume DVD players just look for VIDEO_TS and ignore other folders.

Strange but my system is totally screwed and it doesn't work for me (even though I recommended it).

I used it until a couple of years ago but having installed the latest version from the website all it will let me do is set the default screensaver - non of the other functions seem to work. Anyone else having problems?

I get the impression something got messed up on my system when I reinstalled windows recently as I had some problems installing a particular driver (Logitech) and the tool they supplied to sort it out deleted a lot of unrelated registry entries.

Looks like my New Year's resolution is going to be to reinstall again from scratch!

Try this:

Start > Run > MSCONFIG > OK

Then select Startup > Disable All

and Services > Hide All Microsoft Services > Disable ALL

Then click OK and allow your system to restart.

Now try the burn from PS 3 again.

If it works you can start selectively re-enabling stuff in MSCONFIG and restarting again to work out what is causing the problem. If it doesn't work then there is something odd going on with your windows drivers.

It could be all sorts of things causing the problem so this is the easiest way to try and track it down.

The Sonic plugin works fine for me.

If you are going the TMPGEnc + Nero Route you will need to author the DVD first, you can't just burn the MPEG files produced by TMPGEnc (though I'd guess you probably know that already).

General Software Discussion / Re: folder comments in explorer?
« Last post by Carol Haynes on January 01, 2006, 06:28 AM »
It may or may not be possible for folders, it depends how the FS stores the data.

Another way you can acheive a similar idea is to have a Desktop.ini file in each folder.

Common folders like "My Pictures" have these set up by default and is the reason such folders appear with icons. To see the Desktop.ini file you have to enable viewing hidden and system files in the Folder Options.

There are a number of commands you can include in the desktop.ini file which will allow you to add icons and also tooltips when the mouse hvers over the folder (which could effectively be a comment). Try hovering over My Documents and a comment/tool tip will pop up.

To see how it is dones have a look at some of the system desktop.ini files or check out this link for details:

PAL is used in Europe and Australasia

US uses NTSC

Most PAL players will play NTSC (provided regional encoding doesn't prevent it), but a lot of NTSC systems don't bother to support PAL.

You'd think MS would actually include a few "Easter Eggs" in windows like a Happy New Year message - they bloat it with all sorts of other stuff so why not have a bit of fun!

It's just a way to find quicker/easier ways to do it. Ctrl/Alt/Del brings up a window with all processes showing - killing some of them would have knock on effects on the entire system. Doing it on a window basis would allow just the relevant processes to be killed without the temptation to fiddle with others.

Have you checked File Properties? (Right click on a file in Explorer, click properties and click on the Summary Tab) there is a comments field you can type in - presumably this is it ???
