Sometimes I think it might actually be a helpful thing . in the (very?) long run - if the US & the EU went bankrupt.
on second thoughts probably not,
idea was it could cause a change to accepted way of running things. But I guess that's going to happen - or not, either way.

mightn't be that far away, even the conservative Daily Mail is writing stuff like this:
Capitalism in crisis, a warning from history: Eighty years ago, a banking collapse devastated Europe, triggering war. Today, faith in the free markets is faltering again.

The meek are welcome to wait for their inheritance of earth ... But the rest of us would like to go kicking and screaming (if nobody minds...) because the "right way" to effect change on this appears to be a dead end.

I'd say 40hz is correct in thinking that this will only strengthen their resolve. You see it all the time: fighting something so overtly only makes it defensive and strenghten it's beliefs. (Not saying we gotta accept it though!)
Didnt realise it was so extreme over there....

General Software Discussion / Re: What is Mozilla trying to do?
« Last post by tomos on August 07, 2011, 08:43 AM »
For me FF still wins because of the add-on community - but I suspect that is going to get short lived as Mozilla seem to be using radpid version numbering to destroy obvious compatibility for so many addons. Yes I know you can override the version number in the addon but most people can't/won't do that and this seems to me to be stripping FF of its edge in the choice of browsers.

ironic that their competitive paranoia is damaging their competitiveness.
Saying that, I use only a handful of addons and am happy with FF5

Heard this music a good few times before I saw the singer - she sounds a lot older than she is, or is it that she looks a lot younger than she is :)

She only has one album out (Zaz) I like it all, but it turns out my two favourite tracks are by another french singer (Raphael)

and if, like me, you aren't allowed see that last video, try this live version
ZAZ Live (Port Coton) Bikini Toulouse

and while I'm at it, here's a "busking" version of her hit "Je Veux"

Tom, do you know where the TC plug-in can be downloaded?

I've only heard tell of it - havent used it yet

I cant help you Jim, apart from pointing out that both seem to offer backup features to justify the price [and then Bucket Explorer the "Team" features] . But if you already have a programme that backs up to S3....

What I'd personally really like is a "real"(!) filemanager that can read S3 - the only one I know of off-hand is a plugin for Total Commander. Must try that out...

How are you supposed to restore with this?
They talk about a "Start CD" but it doesnt seem to be one you can make yourself - it was a bargain but without this it's pretty useless.
Have I missed out on something?

as usual, yes, I missed out on something :-[

The download you mentioned is an older version (5.5.120), I downloaded it too after buying and using the download link in the email.

Go to the O&O website and download version 5.6.18

I did this but the WinPE capability is not included in the trial, doh!

You will (apparently) also need to download WAIK (Windows Automated Installation Kit) from microsoft, which weighs in a hefty 1.7 GB iso. Getting goodish download speeds anyways...

I gotta say as well:
Best customer service in a while from O&O, very fast & helpful

But honestly, simply dismissing the sort of academic intelligence that an IQ test measures as "one of the minor and more unimportant intelligences in Real Life!" is a bit arrogant.

I dont know if I'd go that far (naming this type of intelligence as "one of the minor and more unimportant intelligences in Real Life!") but I would agree with Curt that it is overrated, to the extent that all other aspects of our selves are commonly considered unimportant, or even "primitive", with all the negative implications that the modern use of that word conveys.

oops, Curt got there ahead of me :)

edit/ changed the tone a bit

Right ... I'm using the new file monitoring and versioning ability added to Super Flexible File Synchronizer, an excellent backup/synchronization tool which has been written about before.  It seems to be working well, and is convenient since I already use SFFS for normal backing up (mirroring) other folders on my system.

I hadn't seen that before, thanks for the tip.

SFFS monitoring/versioning working very well here too

well,
the message is confusing, article a bit contradictory - says his XYZ (Android) phone is fine, so the problem is not with Android, or is it...

As often the comments are where it gets thrashed out

Interesting. I keep hearing that the Android market is not fragmented and keep reading about Android fans that bash Apple for wanting to be in control instead of being open.

However when someone (an Android fan) writes an article about troubles with an Android phone, the responses are that this is not "an Android Phone" but "Samsung's Android Phone sold by Verizon" and there is much cheering the idea that Google should exert much more control on the hardware and software configurations.

I have neither an Android nor an iPhone and do not plan to buy a new phone for the next 3 or 4 years so, as far as I'm concerned, you can flame away as much as you want but please, whatever your "side" is, try to be minimally consistent and avoid contradictions.

when the OS is open you need to expect contradictions. The OP's experience with the nexus is great, but it's not with a Sammy, Verizon, customized skin.

if google were to dictate standards,  it's not open.

holycalamity 6 hours ago in reply to Vera Comment
So "open" leads to a fragmented market where users can't expect even reasonably decent experience, where software compatibility is essentially "buyer beware" and there isn't any sort of threshold for quality of the experience. It seems to me, at least for the mass consumer market, "open" is a terrible idea.

Yep.  This is the fatal mismatch Android has with the current majority phone/tablet market which is Late Adoption: the majority are "mom" type customers not geek customers who actually like, let alone can, do hardcore hacking to get things working to a baseline level.  The majority rules because the size of the demographic and their wallets.  It's not hard to predict how this will end.

I am a "Mac/Ios" but competition is necessary.  Sadly, Android is mismatched and misfiring on absolutely all cylinders as a competitor.  Make a list of all the things you could do wrong and Android HW+SW +distributors are doing them all in exactly the worst-case way.  Very sad.  I'd love to have two (or more) vendors in the market that simply execute on the user experience as well as Apple does.  No problem at all with that.

shawnde 4 hours ago in reply to Vera Comment
I think you missed the point entirely .... the poster is pointing out the inconsistency or double-standards in the Android fan arguments ....  On one hand, they want selection and choice and variety, and on the other they want homogeneity and uniform experiences.  These two ends of the spectrum are juxtaposed and mutually exclusive; i.e. YOU CAN"T HAVE BOTH.  We didn't have it the PC world, and that is far more mature compared to smartphones.  You're never going to have it on Android .... especially when you have a third player in the game .... namely the carrier :-)

NetscapePizza 4 hours ago in reply to Vera Comment
So "open" leads to a clusterfuck where the user has to be enough of a nerd to understand what version of Android hasn't been butchered to fuck? Otherwise they risk wasting their money on trash that barely works.

Yeah "open" is great

One thing I have noticed is that at times (on different monitors) the refresh rate has been set at 59 MHz, and at other times 60 MHz. I never found out why but the monitors never appeared to display poorly so I guess the settings were OK. I guess that 1 single MHz can actually make a difference?

I just noticed that yesterday - options being 59 or 60 mhz (new machine, same monitor, cant remember what options it showed on old machine) and was wondering the same, what difference the one Mhz might make...

One of the things that really freaks me out using UAC is that the screen goes black before the dialogue box shows - the void seems to vary in length depending on the "extremity" of what you're trying to do.

If it's just a flash of a black screen it's fine - but when the screen just goes black and looks like it's going to stay that way, my blood (still) runs cold. I mean it's maybe only a second but still.... I could do with as little torture as possible at the moment, especially what with recovering from a sudden-pc-death and trying to adjust to a new OS.

SFFS is my main backup tool, I've always used versioning (not mirroring). It also has what it calls "Synthetic Backups" a combination of partial-file-updating, zipping & versioning which would be useful for large files.
