Does it support after burning data verification - this is the one feature I'm not prepared to lose.
6627
Seems to work using right CTRL for menus

Could you add right CRTL for all the options - so scrolling capture would be left CRTL+SHIFT plus right CTRL to avoid clicking ?

Alternatively, how about making these keyboard shortcuts configurable?
6628
I think that would solve the XDesk problem too if you don't have to hold down keys and click.
6629
Anyone know a decent basic burning alternative, preferably with a full verify?

The main reason I use Nero is that it can systematically verify the disc contents against the source when it has finished, few other utilitities seem to have this feature.

Can someone also explain (following an earlier thread) why Music CD copies suffer degradation in copying (hence the need for specialist software to copy them) when Nero compares sector for sector in RAW mode copying?

Having installed Nero 7 I was nonplussed to find that opening a Windows Explorer window had a delay of of up to 15 seconds before it was useable.

I tracked it down to Nero Scout a new utility for indexing media files in Nero 7. Personally I really do not want this function, and nothing would induce me to use Nero Home (their incredibly clunky media playing system) so I thought I will uninstall all the bits I don't want (and there are many).

To cut a long story short there is no way to uninstall Nero Scout, even if non of the programs it is designed to support are installed. You can disable it in the options but this still doesn'f fix the file browsing delay (it also affects Directory Opus).

If you want to get rid of it I have found that deregisterring one of the DLLs kills Nero Scout without affecting other parts of the package that I use.

If you want to get rid of Nero Scout hit Start > Run and eexecute the command:

regsvr32 -u "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ahead\Lib\MediaLibraryNSE.dll"

assuming that you install to the normal standard folders. Note that the quotes "" are important.

As a bitchy follow on comment, I am really not impressed with this new version. It doesn't remember last use setting like Nero 6 did (eg. I have to manually select DVD every time I try to burn a DVD as it now defaults to CD even on DVD drives) and I am finding the new video components aren't as effective at importing DVD-VR format discs.

Add to that massive amounts of bloat and unnecessary extras (Yahoo toolbar is installed unless you are careful on the download page) and personally I wish I had stayed at version 6.

I can't find any reference in XDesk to using Ctrl+Shift+Click, in fact most of the key combinations in XDesk use the Windows key ??

Certainly exiting XDesk removes the problem, but I can't see why.
6632
By the way folks if people want to test this version and give feedback without affecting the current version you have installed do the following:

1) Download the beta version and use an archive program to unzip the installer contents to the desktop in its own folder
2) Open the folder and delete the installer
3) Exit ScreenShot Captor if it is running
4) Double click ScreenShotCaptor.exe in folder

This will use the ini file in the new folder and not affect your currently installed version.
6633
Another couple of things:

1) How do you determine window class names to use the exceptions? Are you going to provide a drag and drop tool for this?

2) Directory Opus panes don't seem to scroll consistently (but again that may be an XDesk compatability issues as it seems to work when XDesk is not running).

3) See what you mean about firefox - seriously don't try and capture a full screen scrolling window if you suffer from epilepsy !

4) Ideally the red tips should be displayed inside the RedSquare as it is not visible capturing full screen whole windows.
6634
There seems to be a problem if you have XDesk running at the same time.

As a first attempt I tried to capture just the scrolling part of the BBC.co.uk home page in Internet Explorer.

If XDesk is closed there is no problem, but if XDesk is open Ctrl+Shift+Click when the red box is active captures only the part of the page visible, then brings up an XDesk window (thumbnails of all desktops) and finally tries to complete the capture umpteen times with unpredictable results - sometimes it simply grabs the XDesk windo too (so I end up with an L shaped capture of both windows) and sometimes I end up with the following (scroll the image to the right - sorry it is so large I haven't got any resizing software installed at the moment):

Maybe a dry joint on the sound card - they can be a devil to track down.

I changed my old sound card not so long ago as I started to get intermittent stuff like this, and then it suddenly became consistent on one channel. Drivers/new installs etc. solved nothing. Plugged in a new card and all was fine.

If it is working now then wait and see but if it becomes less intermittent it may be a developing hardware fault.

Incidentally I have an odd issue like this. I have a 7.1 surround system on my Audigy card and use an old CD deck to play music through though the system by plugging the CD deck out into one of the card's breakout box sockets. I was constantly getting crackling which I thought was a dodgy lead connection between the two as fiddling with the lead seemed to cure it for a while. Turns out, having replaced the cable, that it is actually an earthing problem. Even though the computer and CD deck are connected via the same earthed mains socket (bot via a UPS circuit) there seems to be a mismatched earth causing static pops and crackles. Physically earthing both jointly but touching the earth connectors with my fingers cures this problem until the next system reboot. Strange but these things happen!

If you read the article there is a section on de-ionized water and unfortunately it tended to get ionized in use and cause electrical shorts.

I said it was damn silly

Trouble is I can't be bothered to email WebRoot with the false positive. It seems to me that the algorithms used to detect spyware are getting ever more sloppy in all products out there!

Just done a spwsweeper scan. In the current version (4.5.8 (build 683), def file v 598) it flags up the registry key HKLM/software/MM as part of "Adware: elitemediagroup-mediamotor".

Just posted this so that people are warned as MP3ext uses this reg. key (and subkeys).

SpySweeper flags up Gling.wav in the sounds folder as part of "win-spy monitor"

Damn silly I know but maybe it would be worth changing the filename for the next release to avoid people accidentally deleting the sound.

Nice - I think some one around here built his new PC just a bit too soon ...

Bit mucky though if you want to swap a PCI card, and you need a second box for your drives ...

Also if you have a basket compartment in the top you can make French Fries ...

How can you have non-organic petroleum based oil ??? Petroleum is a biological biproduct ...

General Software Discussion / Re: Assembly coding
« Last post by Carol Haynes on January 09, 2006, 04:09 PM »
I've done assembly programming since... early/mid nineties, so I know the drill. Saying that it's faster than any compiled language is nonsense, that depends on the skill of the programmer. And the kind of naïve code written by people who do full-application asm programming tends to be worse than what today's C/C++ compilers can produce. Sad but true.

It is unfair to say that sloppy asm code is no faster than compiled code. You can only compare code written by people of similar standard in their chosen skills - equally sloppy high level code (and there is plenty of that about) will be far slower than ASM code of a similar standard.

Well crafted ASM code will always beat well crafed high level code for time critical functions.

No one in their right mind writes ASM code for full applications any more, and in Windows it would be totally pointless as the Windows library code that it would have to reference almost constantly to make it compatible is written in probably some of the sloppiest and heavily (and badly) patched code ever written on the planet. There probably isn't a single kilobyte of windows code that hasn't had many multiple patches applied over the last 20 years (fixing bugs, shoring up failing security, maintaining backward compatibility with MSDOS 1, in many cases).

ASM still has it's place though in time critical routines for realtime applications.

Actually RISC based machines made ASM quite easy to write very efficient code with a fairly low learning curve.

I have a nostalia for ASM code of yesteryear as I taught assembly language coding for many years in 8 bit and 16 bit environments (but I have no desire to write any more - just a contented feeling to have been there and done that).

I do have colleagues who remember using binary code to bootstrap early computers (rows of switches to enter the startup sequence). God help you if the machine crashed ;)

Anyone out there remember OCCAM ?

Assembly language is very useful if you want to write really efficient, fast compact code. It is a lot faster to execute than any compiled language. Trouble is most of the libraries available are written in compiled languages these days!

Have you checked the Creative website for updates? There is now an automatic detect and update service on the site which works a lot better than their old download and hope approach. You may find that there is a PlayForSure firmware update there which means that it works natively within Windows XP - certainly the Zen Micro has this firmware update but they didn't ship it as standard because not all Windows versions support PlayForSure technology. Worth checking out if it is possible, and then I think you will find the shortcut method works for you.

Had a heck of a job uninstalling Agnitum Outpost (had to do it manually as the uninstaller doesn't work at all) - what a PITA.

Have installed NetVeda - not terribly impressed on first impressions. Basically when an app wants to contact the internet you have the option to Allow, Allow Once or Deny access. There is no opportunity at that point to set up any sort of rule based or port based access - you need to open the firewall configuration screen and go through numerous dialogues to write specific rules.

It is quite confusing to setup because it is possible to configure the software as a standalone firewall or as a Gateway Firewall. However, the onscreen documentation is cursory at best, and really doesn't explain a lot. The PDF manual is a bit better but still doesn't really explain how rules are configured in any detail. This is also a complaint in the forums.

Rules can be set up though it is not at all easy to see how to do this on an application basis. Rules are configured by a simple form using drop down menus for services and applications:

rules.png

However, the applications drop down is initially empty. The services dropdown is confusing terminology as it seems to refer to protocols rather than services:

services.png

All other drop downs seem to be empty or set to ALL

To add applications to the dropdown list you need to go through a lengthy process of manually adding .exe files to groups with common properties. For example I have a number of applications from TMPGEnc which will need similar internet access rules so I had to set the following list up:

appgroup.png

in order to add TMPGEnc to the applications list.

There are numerous group types:

grouptype.png

This may well be a flexible way to do this but it is extraordinarily time consuming and confusing and even then you only seem to be able to block or allow a group (and I couldn't get this to work form my TMPGEnc group - but this is probably just my misunderstanding of how it all links together). You can specify port activity and IP based network acivity via the Network and Services groups respectively, though it is not terribly obvious how you apply IP and Port based rules to applications.

All in all I am still looking for a new firewall - for me I don't think NetVeda is going to be the one as it is going to take massive amounts of work to manually configure every application the way you want. It is simply too tempting just to allow each application default "Allow" or "Block" access to all incoming and outgoing traffic.

FWIW the free and Pro versions seem to be identical. The only difference I can find is that the free version doesn't have any individual support, except via the forums. The free version has the option to enter license details - but this is not required unless you purchase a license.

Full manual for the Pro version here (PDF file) has loads of screenshots.

It is not at all clear from the website what the differences are between the free version and the Pro version. The Overviews of the two products (and version numbers) are identical as far as I can see. Maybe it is just a matter of licensing and it is the same product ??? The file sizes are almost identical (to within a few hundred bytes 6.20Mb).

There is also a Flash animation on the home page showing how the software works (though I did find it a little naff). Click on "Policy.Net Multi-layer Protection" on the home page (it is a JavaScript link).

I am going to give it a go. I am still getting odd BSODs with Outpost installed and I don't like the volume of work generated by all the windows popping up constantly (feels like 1 in 10 mouse clicks generates a need for response from Outpost ... okay an exaggeration but it is really intrusive).
