Living Room / Re: New Consumer Protection for Broadband Customers (FUNNY!)
« Last post by Renegade on November 16, 2011, 07:14 AM »
The worst part is, you just know that the way they are going to choose which 10% get the advertised maximum speed is by determining which users never actually use their internet connection more than once a month...

And I thought I was cynical~! ;D

But you're probably right.

It would nice to see "expected speed with variance in standard deviations" advertised.

Living Room / New Consumer Protection for Broadband Customers (FUNNY!)
« Last post by Renegade on November 16, 2011, 05:04 AM »
This is just hilarious... Consumer protection at its finest~! :P

http://www.bbc.co.uk.../technology-15742055

Critics say consumers are being misled by internet service providers who continue to advertise their maximum broadband speeds, even though many users do not get them.

New rules from the Committee of Advertising Practice (CAP) say that from April next year providers will no longer be able to advertise maximum speeds for net packages unless 10% of customers receive them.

Hahahahaha~! ;D

That was a good laugh. For me at least.

Care to set the bar just a bit lower? That might be a bit difficult to achieve... Hahahahaha~! ;D :P

Yes, Scoopertino is a fun one (I liked the Apple kool-aid...).
And they were quite classy about the whole business after Jobs passed.
http://scoopertino.c...traced-to-steve-jobs

Apple Kool-Aid was quickly rejected by the FDA, which normally frowns upon products that toy with our brains. However, they reversed their ruling just as quickly after drinking the juice themselves.

hahahaaha~! Excellent! ;D

Before I embark, please throw light to me to see another free one which does all these and may be more, and I will embrace it.

Hehehe! A very wise question! I don't use them, so I can't make a recommendation for you, but I can certainly appreciate the predicament! :D

Hahahahaha~! ;D

And found the original source for it:

Ack! Forgot to mention SoC. Ath is right there. But seriously, you can't mess with SoC.

Have a look here:

http://en.wikipedia....iki/System_on_a_chip

Can we say, not fun?

The equipment you'd need would cost you a LOT more than a new phone.

You're right. I was looking at the top and missed the right side there.

While the physical part of changing the memory chip shouldn't be that hard (depending of ones soldering skills and equipment availability). I think the main question should be, Will the phones system architecture allow it to access/utilize the extra memory if it is added? Because if the answer to that question is no...there ain't much point in cracking the thing open.

Stoic is right. No. You can't. (Usually.)

First, the kind of chips you need aren't generally available. The kind of memory you need to look at is measured in Mb or Gb, and not in MB or GB. We're talking about individual chips and not banks of them.

But if you do have them, then you into different problems.

Parts of the firmware are compiled for specific memory.

Remember, different memory uses different voltages, with newer memory using less and less. So you'd also have power issues to worry about. You don't want to put 1.8 V through memory that needs 1.35 V.

However, it's a case-by-case basis and depends on your specific device. In general, no you can't.

However, if your phone has something like eMMC in it, then you can relatively easily. eMMC has a single point for the interface and insulates application designers from the specific memory type. This is the wave of the future for mobile memory and you'll see more and more of it. moviMMC and other stuff is coming as well, which will allow the same kinds of things.

In short, if you need to ask the question, don't even think about trying. Unless you have a phone to burn and don't care if you destroy it, then by all means, have some fun and experiment! :D

Utter... complete... incompetence...  :-\

Steam are so utterly and completely incompetent... It astounds me.

I've ranted before about their incompetence before, but this takes the cake...

And yes - I got a "Your password was changed" email from them. I don't use anything from Steam, well, because they're incompetent and I can't. I've tried. Multiple times.

I suppose I should be thankful for that.

I wasn't impressed at having to create a support account to have my Steam account password reset. Sheesh. Wonder how long it is before their support servers get hacked...  :-\

I don't mind walking the plank - my martyrdom would be secured. All hail the Spaghetti Monster - tomato ketchup or not, leave him unsullied. A little olive oil would do (extra virgin of course).

We'll take that praise of his noodlie goodness as repentance for your sins~! ;D

But, like, next time, could you remember that he, like, also flies? We don't want people to think that his noodlieness is confined to earth as we mere mortals are. :P

And they all said, macaroni is truly holy~!

So, has the update insanity settled down enough for someone that always waits because he doesn't like farting around with software updates that break things?

-- Haven't updated to iOS 5 for that exact reason -- stuff breaks.

Is it safe enough now?

Steam themselves shouldn't be storing credit card numbers, encrypted or otherwise

They're an online store, and lots of online stores remember payment details to make it easier for you to buy stuff from them.

Lots of people smoke crack. Doesn't mean it's a good idea. :P ;D

So, I click through the link...

Skim through the article. Interesting points. I can understand some of them. Interaction with physical objects and feedback. Got it. Like it.

I get to the video. Hmmm... But that's kind of cool. I'd like that. Seems like he's complaining about a paradigm shift and being more or less of a Luddite.

Then...

Cue ominous music... Drums... Thunder & lightning...

MICROSOFT! WTF? They did something cool? WTF? That can't be from MS! MS couldn't have produced a video THAT cool! No way!

I'm still rooting for surface. If they're going to kill the Courier, at least they can give us one of the cool things they have in the pipes...

My problem is the opposite, really — this vision, from an interaction perspective, is not visionary. It's a timid increment from the status quo, and the status quo, from an interaction perspective, is actually rather terrible.

This matters, because visions matter. Visions give people a direction and inspire people to act, and a group of inspired people is the most powerful force in the world. If you're a young person setting off to realize a vision, or an old person setting off to fund one, I really want it to be something worthwhile. Something that genuinely improves how we interact.

Well, you need to start somewhere. It's a step. There will be more along the way.

What do you expect though? Teleporters, tractor beams, and "Computer, hot apple pie with a slice of bohemian goat's milk cheddar aged medium with jack fruit and vanilla ice cream on a silver platter with oak wood chopsticks and a side of hot twins in bikinis"?

Here's my vision. I imagine things and they happen.

Oh, here's my other vision that I stole:

Apparently I'm not alone in stealing that vision:

If I only could,
I'd make a deal with God,
And I'd get him to swap our places,
Be running up that road,
Be running up that hill,
With no problems...

Dunno... His complaints seem to be a bit picky. Microsoft is about practicality. They're not a "vision" company. The drive possibilities forward. They do not drive imagination forward.

Developer's Corner / Re: HTML line break spacing
« Last post by Renegade on November 09, 2011, 03:18 AM »
It would be wrong to fix that with CSS. Line breaks serve 2 purposes: 1) Content, 2) Code Formatting. So, there's no way to determine whether the line break is one or the other there. As such, it's interpreted as a space in those cases.

e.g.

Code: HTML [Select]
  1. <p> This is
  2. a paragraph. And it has
  3. 2 sentences.
  4. </p>
  5. <pre>But this is preformatted
  6. text
  7. and
  8. displays
  9. as
  10. you see it here.</pre>

I'm not sure if my spaces at the ends of the lines will be rendered here. (Most lines have no spaces.)

Try using a text editor that doesn't automatically break lines. That should solve the problem.

But unfortunately some do, just as some Christians pervert the bible (and I'm assuming that the same goes on in other religions, i.e. humans are humans and religion is a powerful tool).

Hopefully, we can leave us Pastafarians out of all that!

Well... I suppose it's possible that some perversions go on... Though I've never heard of anyone putting ketchup on spaghetti... That truly is perverse!

This incident turned out not to be blasphemy.

Well, and then there are those luke-warm pastafarians that don't wear full pirate regalia... I'm guilty... :(

Yeah... I guess we pastafarians are debased humans too. :(

Are you looking to tie into one of the existing pet adoption systems (like PetFinders.com) to leverage an existing backend database. I mention because they have an existing API/SDK for tieing into their db, and the local HS uses them.

That solves 99% of the problem right there! :)
