Living Room / 10th Anniversary - long time member check-in thread
« Last post by mouser on March 05, 2015, 10:49 PM »
One of the things I wish for to celebrate the 10th anniversary of DonationCoder is to hear briefly from some of our long time olden-days members who have gone awol and haven't posted in a long time.

You don't have to say much of anything if you don't want to -- a simple "hello" would do, just so we could see your avatars and smile.

Even better would be if you gave us an update on your life, your hobbies, projects, etc.  No need to explain why you have moved on from DC -- just give a little hello for those of us who remember you fondly.

I really hope to see some posts here from our lost members -- it would make me very happy.

Bounty hunters activate! Here are the top 122 lost sheep, who haven't posted in at least 300 days, and have made 100 or more posts in the past:

One thing I want as a present for the anniversary is for all of the long-time hundred+ post members, who we haven't heard from in a long time, to stop by and make a hello post.  doesn't have to be a big long post, just a simple hello would make my heart swell.

General Software Discussion / Re: metadata
« Last post by mouser on March 05, 2015, 10:55 AM »
The issue of filing electronic documents in a nice organized way and preserving extra info, and be able to search, etc.  is an important one.
There are surely some good articles about it online and some good software for it.
Do some research and let us know what you find -- it would be useful information for many.
6533
The real problem with writing reviews of software like this -- is that you really need some descent familiarity with the main alternatives -- it's simply pointless for someone who hasn't used other partition tools to review just one.  And given how rarely people use partition tools, it's not something that most people have much experience with.
6534
I'll just chime in briefly to say this kind of thing isn't unusual or spam (at least in the traditional sense) -- it's just a company that wants to have their software publicly reviewed (positively they hope), to get more exposure and publicity.
If it's not software you are interested in, just ignore it :)

[edit]
I see now you received this not as an email but as a forum message -- ok well as long as this user is only sending out one or two messages to those people on the forum who have written reviews about similar tools (which i think you qualify for), there's no harm.  If they start spamming large numbers of people on forum, then we'll step in.

General Software Discussion / Re: Avoid AdBlock Plus for Android!
« Last post by mouser on March 04, 2015, 06:20 PM »
Appears to be an issue that has been raised before:

https://adblockplus....iewtopic.php?t=11849

https://adblockplus.org/en/android-faq
Why does Adblock Plus appear to consume so much traffic?
To filter ads, all traffic has to pass through Adblock Plus. Android considers this to be the traffic caused by the app, while it is in reality the sum of all traffic.

Note that the posters on that thread still don't seem in agreement about the nature of the bandwidth.. some say adblock plus is eating bandwidth, some say its just a reporting problem..

Portable version now available.
Older versions were expiring saying Private Beta Testing period had expired.
6539
A flat source file list may be useful in some cases, but not in my case -- I need to be able to quickly choose large folders from a hierarchy for copying.

that is insane if it's real..
but i wonder if it's some kind of mistake -- like if Adblock Plus was filtering all traffic and the Data usage calculator ended up double counting all bandwidth and assigning it all to Adblock Plus?  just a thought because that number seems insane.

General Software Discussion / Re: Need SSL Certificate Recomendations
« Last post by mouser on March 04, 2015, 08:14 AM »
I can only commiserate -- the ssl certificate renewal process at StartSSL is painful and confusing and feels like it's from an alternate dystopian dimension.. It's still what I use though, because of price.
If you find something better at a reasonable price, let me know.
6543
There's ALMOST a good way to do that now.. But I will try to improve it and make it truly useful in next release, so keep an eye out in the next two weeks.

Living Room / Nice essay on the Prisoner's Dilemma Tournaments
« Last post by mouser on March 03, 2015, 08:38 PM »
I remember one of the first things that got me truly interested in artificial intelligence as a young kid was talking with my father about a Scientific American article on the "Prisoner's Dilemma" with my father.
It's a wonderfully rich and accessible mathematical/game-theory problem, made all the more exciting by the idea of having these tournaments that pit different strategies against each other.

Should we put a link to the mobile pages at the bottom of each forum page?
To elaborate on what wraith says, you can visit the main forum in mobile mode like:
6549
Wraith, excellent points.

And I think that your second part gets to a conflict of DC.  Is it a community site?  Or is it mouser's site that we contribute to?  I don't think that either is a wrong answer, but I think not having an answer to the question sort of drives the confusion.  And that can be one of the things that is firmly decided in this 10th anniversary.

I think the answer to that is part of the problem that needs to be solved.  I want this to be more of a true community website (not just a community forum).. but the site infrastructure makes it much harder than it should be for others to participate as first class participants in some areas.  While we are all pretty much on equal footing on the forum -- the software area of the site is not easily opened up to other coders without lots of manual effort (and vetting, which is a separate problem), and the infrastructure of the site makes it difficult for us to have content that gets much visibility other than in the forum, etc.

Right now we have a slightly schizophrenic situation where we have a true community forum that is fairly diverse in its interests, and an old school static website (that is much harder to update) with more narrowly focused software.
In many ways these two aspects of the site complement one another -- but in some ways they don't and create friction and confusion.
6550
I am going to try to write up a tough critique of what i see as the problems with DC as it stands.. and then try to come up with some possible directions..
It's always possible that we should essentially let DC be DC, and not try to mess with it -- despite it's flaws.  But I think it will be healthy at this time to try to lay them all out on the table.
So.. stay tuned..
